I'm debating if I wanna go or not. I had a pretty okay time last year all things considered but it cost a lot to get there and have a room and I don't know if I have that financial freedom this year.
>>

>>
First anime con for my friends and I. Any tips that we should know?
Likely going to be cosplaying as well. Buddy and I will likely be doing our Overhaul and Chronostasis that I put together, then my gf will be going as Mai Valentine (after I finish building her duel disk). Hoping it'll be a good time for everyone.
>>
>>10079820
It's kinda crowded, understand rain can fuck you at any point if walking, book yesterday because hotels are probably mostly booked by now, lots of people will be drunk/high, meh vendor hall, akward cosplay shoots because of weather
>>
>>10079839
Hotels at the con rate aren't even available yet for reasons unknown.
>>
>>10079839
Meh, doesn't sound too awful. We've been to other cons before, and I imagine the crowds are comparable to PAX so that shouldn't be an issue. Already got a place to stay as well, so that's not an issue either. I imagine the worst aspect to brace for will be the truly awkward folks, but that's expected with an anime con. Good or not, I'm sure the whole thing will be memorable.

Is there a date they usually have the schedule up by?
>>
Just how many conventions are there?
I know there's anime expo, comiket, vocaloid convention, and this thread's one.
>>
>>10080457
The last couple of years they really dropped the ball on the schedule. Last year it didn't go out until the week of the con.

Beats me. Ask around, there's sometimes threads specifically for talking about what cons are good or not. If you have the time and money to spare, just go to something nearby and get a feel for it yourself.
>>
>>10081343
The PNW cons tend to be kinda lame, outside Sakuracon. Which has plenty of issues of its own.
>>
>>10081343
>how do I know which ones are good
Only way is to go and find out however my advice is
>take anything about how it's the greatest or worst with a grain of salt
>read the facebook for past con topics and posts
>look on youtube for con videos
>read the guest list from prior years and upcoming year
>avoid cons that are ultra small or super big, I personally try to aim for the 6-13k range. generally has enough people to find your niche to common interests without being stupidly crowded or a ghost town
>any california con expect usually excess drama and weird/odd staff choices no clue why but it's always california
>>
Seriously though, we are almost under 3 months away and there are still no hotel blocks. Starting to thing I should spring on a regular hotel room.
>>
>>10081804
Hotels are starting to fill up through regular booking too. I know they usually set a certain number aside but they're going to get snatched up so fast
>>
>>10081804
I’m thinking the same thing. It’s my first SAK so the lack of hotel block is concerning. Maybe wait another week to see then go ahead if there’s been no announcement. Can always cancel the booking afterward, right? What are the usual hotels people go for?
>>
Anyone got any leads as to if there will be good fashion guests this year?
>>
>>10081343
go to animecons.com, see which one are happening, compare guest list from previous years and google reviews.

There are over 50 anime cons in the US yearly, I usually get to the larger ones as the events and guests are better. But it depends on your interests.

Like cosplay? Katsucon, AX , fanime

Games? PAX east and west

English VA? Texas con and mid size cons (30k)

Japanese guests? AX, AnimeNYC, Crunchyroll expo

Music? Midwest and Texas cons

Japanese music? AX, AWA

A little of everything?
Fanime, anime Boston,Acen
>>
Everyone worrying about the hotels needs to chill. IIRC last year they didn't open up until the end of January so there's still time and I had no issues getting a room then. If it's not open by mid-February it's time to panic. There will still be rooms available directly through the hotel.

>>10079159
I can all but guarantee you wouldn't be the only one.

>>10082005
>What are the usual hotels people go for?
All the relatively close ones are listed on the 2018 hotel registration page. I've stayed at Motif the last two years and it's pretty swell. The pub it sits on top of is good both in terms of beer and food and it's only a couple blocks away. Only complaints are the water pressure on the top 5 floors or so is mediocre and the parking garage *sucks*. It's tiny and expensive and I've had to park alone the wall both times, rather than in an actual space. If you're not driving then this obviously isn't an issue.
This time around I'll be booking the Sheraton which is one block up from Motif. I believe it's a bit cheaper but the parking is valet so it about evens out.
The Grand Hyatt is right across from the con center but the rates are triple those of all the surrounding hotels and they don't play ball with the con so no special deals. The one upside is their garage is massive, reasonably priced, and open to the public. I may just unload my stuff at my hotel and park my car in there this year because it'll shave almost $100 off my weekend.

Also, I'm glad the 18 thread didn't meme it's way to a year long thread, fuck you memers.

Seeing how last year went with scheduling, guests, and etc. I'm ready for this to be another train wreck... Seeing how long it's taking to post the hotel info, we're off to a swell start.
>>
>>10088419
The way I see it, everybody else is holding their breath as well waiting for hotel reg to open. If we make it to valentine's day with no word then panic and book directly through the hotel. Rooms aren't going to be filling up steadily before then because it's fucking easter. There's nothing worth booking a hotel for except the con.

>>10088366
It can't be too big, though because I'm only getting a single. I'll cram people in for a regular party but when the orgy starts we'll have to narrow it down to like 7 or 8.

Some of my friends were trying to just book a room, and the Sheraton was out of double bed rooms. Which means either people went hog wild for the rooms, or there's a large number reserved for the hotel block. All the other major hotels in the area appeared to have unsurprisingly inflated prices for rooms that weekend. I guess we'll see what happens.

>>10090671
I have a shitload of comedies so we'll be covered on that front.

Hotels are finally open
>>
This is gonna be my second Sakura-Con. Last year seemed pretty cool, but I don't know how it stacked up to previous years.
All my friends flaked on me so I'm probably just gonna be going with some of my normie co-workers because I can't stand to be alone at a con.
>>
>>10092209
I already booked the Sheraton through Marriott's thing (I like to maximize my reward points), but I took a look at the offerings anyway... It looks like only 4 hotels are being offered this year?
>>
>>10092285
I suspect someone on here will organize a meetup of some sort (not the "orgy" I half-jokingly suggested above).
>>

The discord we set up last year is still alive so you'll be in touch with at least a handful of us and I'll be looking for people to drink and hang out with as soon as I get checked in and get my badge Thursday night. This is pretty much the only time of year I get to be social so I make the most of it.

>>10092300
>>10092304
The hotel I stayed at the last two years isn't up yet but I was planning on doing the Sheraton this year anyway so it worked out. The price is exactly the same as last year so even if more don't open up its no real loss to me.
>>
>>10092304

I made it to Sakura in 2016 and had a blast. The general sense of enthusiasm and wide variety of interests (and thus cosplay) blew me away in comparison to the sole con in my state. Now I’m making enough to afford attending a second time.

Really ought to take a couple days off to work on cosplay this month, though. Getting my props engineered to fit onto a flight has been more challenging than I hoped.

Is there anywhere good to look in advance for specific meetups or plans? I’m not the most effective socializer, but I’d like to cut down on exclusively loitering with my travel crew and try some board games, mild partying, or general friendmaking this year.
>>
>>10094758
>Is there anywhere good to look in advance for specific meetups or plans
The con's facebook page if you're looking for something like show/game/character-specific meets. For general friend-making it really comes down to your own social skills. To the best of my knowledge there is no forum for simply hanging out. Ironically the Sakuracon website used to have a forum to handle all of this along with other things like room sharing and feedback but they ditched it like 5 or 6 years ago for whatever reason.

If you want to hang out with people who are somewhat familiar, we made a small discord server last year and everybody in it is down for pretty much anything: https://discord.gg/2cmHMX
Don't worry about lacking social skills. None of us have any, either.
>>
>>10094781
>Ironically the Sakuracon website used to have a forum to handle all of this along with other things like room sharing and feedback but they ditched it like 5 or 6 years ago for whatever reason.

They were afraid of lawsuits, and I think they even said as much. It's a pretty common trend among cons run by poorly educated and reactionary types to be constantly afraid of 1) Lawsuits and 2) Negative public opinion due to more risque elements of anime. You can't reason with these types of people- believe me, I tried when I was an executive at my local con. They rode me out of town for calling a known predator a "douchebag" on a private group chat.
>>
>>10094758
>Getting my props engineered to fit onto a flight has been more challenging than I hoped.

I feel your pain, I gotta do the same thing.
TSA got really weird about one of my props last year and I'm not looking forward to going through it again.
>standing in TSA inspection line
>carrying a guitar case on my back with helmets/masks and prop trident
>TSA agent singles me out
>"What do you have in the case apart from the guitar, anon?"
>Me thinking there's not gonna be any problem because it's all plastic and rubber crap but still kinda awkward about it because TSA
>"No guitar sir, just a couple helmets and a trident."
>Visibly confused TSA agent: "What's a trident?"
>"It's like a uhh... big fork?"
>TSA agent gives me the thousand yard stare.
>"Step out of line please, anon."
>ohfuckohfuck.gif
>Spend the next ten minutes feverishly outing myself as weeb trash to the TSA and explaining that it's all cosplay stuff.
>>
>>10094781
Pls giv new 1
>>
>>10094758
>>10095844
You guys, too? First "cosplay" I did was just carrying around a bunch of masks to show off. TSA got a kick out of it, and one guy actually recognized them and lost his shit. They still had to pull them all out to make sure nothing was suspect, though I can't blame them when the x-ray shows a jumbled, unidentifiable mess.

This year's going to be a bit more difficult. Still engineering the basic look of my prop, but making it sturdy and collapseable will be a fun challenge.

I'm working on the opening stages of my second cosplay involving a six foot sword of some kind. My dumb fantasy preferences are warring with the inevitable need for practicality and it's really testing my will to adapt.

>>10095869
Any suggestions for a first-time mask maker with glasses?
>>
>>10096113
Hmm, wearing glasses? Can't say I've had to work around that before (to be fair, I'm far from an expert but I'm working to improve my mask and prop making). I guess a few questions first, are you planning to make the mask out of EVA foam, or something else like paper mache, card stock, etc? Either way, you'll likely want to design it so that the mask isn't pushing into your face and glasses. Might want to either use extra bits of EVA foam or another thick padding along the inside so that it pushes out from your forehead or another spot where it will be secure, lifted, and not uncomfortable.
Let me know if you've got any other questions or concerns, I'd be happy to help as best as I can.
>>
>>10096199
I’ve been cutting angles and rough curves/angles into paper templates all day, with the intent to trace them onto EVA foam, assemble, and (once I get the actual shape right) coat with Worbla for a rigid final structure.

I’ve never actually used Worbla before, but without a thermoplastic coating there’s no way this design would survive interstate traveling.

The padding is a good suggestion, and reminds me that there’s going to be some contact cement work to plan for in the spring as well.

It is a free college con, so there's a fair share of XD random! tweens but they're just loud and harmless. Go check out the lip-sync contest if you want a good laugh though! There's an 18+ one this year which should be interesting.

>>
>>10116600
God damn staff? need to fuck off
This con used to be so good, Sad
>>
>>10116600
Holy shit, I just checked it a few days ago. From the situation the last time I saw:
>Sak says that photographers aren't allowed to solicit because Sak is run by a nonprofit group, so photogs are restricted from posting rates (though allowed to DM cosplayers or invite people to contact them privately)
but now it looks like
>FB organizer is pressured into calling the group "unofficial" to distance it from Sak's nonprofit status?

Not sure what else is going on here.
>>
>>10116604
My impression is that most people were okay or neutral with photogs limited to advertising but not posting rates and inviting people to privately message them for paid shoots, but some vocal people railed about the need to protect innocent people from shady/creepy photogs and scammers and PMs were totally not possible and all communication needed to be public. Then you have the side branch of people who are quite against paid photogs advertising/posting at all in the group and saying they should make their own completely non-associated group.
Wtf sak-con, thought you'd be more sane than this. I thought just allowing photogs say "pm me for details on non-free shoots" would be good enough. Or even scratch that, anyone with some common sense should know that they should expect a rate if they see a photographer's work and like it and want to book a shoot without being prompted.

Sakura-Con staff have never been known for their judgement. It actually seems to be a trend with a lot of anime cons- staff seem to be utterly afraid of everything.

I think anon means Seattle and they're right, but the whole of WA is just sadness and isolation. We're too lethargic to get excited over anything.
>>
>>10138031
True, but I don't think I ever hear anything much from Kumoricon either. I wanna say a few years ago Sakcon had a couple threads up before the con even started. This year, we're 3 weeks away and still on the same thread with less than 200 replies. At least the schedule is up early, that might liven things up a bit.

>>10138016
It is interesting. Maybe it's about accessibility. Maybe out east, cons are one of the few opportunities fans get to nerd out, while Seattle/PNW is pretty nerd friendly in general. It's like you can be a nerd and still find things to do in Seattle throughout the year instead of just waiting for the con to come around.

I'll be sure to hang out near them and blow regular tobacco smoke at them as much as possible. Why not the one in International District? Sure, it's probably 1/4 the size of Tukwila, but it might be more accessible for someone traveling into town. Just take the lightrail, 3 stops away, 6 minutes tops.

>>10148092
I know, it's absolutely dead around here. Even fb group doesn't have too much activity but it hardly ever does. I'm starting to think it has something to do with all the 'seeking volunteers!!' posts. Maybe they don't have as many people helping out this year and thus the reach is smaller than it usually is. Someone stepped up to do that pre-con list thing, but think about how late they rolled everything out. Sakcon is usually pretty okay with getting announcements up at a reasonable time; this year seems off. Not sure what's going on, but that can affect attendee interest.

I guess I can't complain. At least they don't change their dates mid-year like some cons *cough*Akon*cough*.
>>
>>10148092
I think most people see the downward spiral Sakura is going in and are avoiding it. I don't even see most of the usual people that show up in here anymore.

>>10148458
>>10148092
Maybe it's only poorfags and local kids left going to the con. I saw PSA posts like reminder about Seattle soda/sales/everything tax go by on fb and people actually sharing tips on how to save that $0.15-$2 on soda. If $2 makes or breaks your con weekend budget…

>>
The line wasn't that bad actually. Got my registration done in a hour. What are the best ways to meet people at the con?
>>
>>10151811
Not nearly as bad as you have it, but I'm kinda off to a shite start too senpai.
Bad accident on the freeway plus TSA getting weird about some of my stuff made me miss my flight.

>>10151815
First, find someone at the con that's cosplaying something you like and that you're familiar with. Keep it simple, talk about that stuff as you already have that in common.
Second, always remain a little self aware. Talking to random people at cons is awkward and people are weird. Make sure you give that person an out so you don't look desperate and they don't have to feel bad for making up an excuse to get away from you if you're coming off strong. Say things like "I don't want to hold you up" or "you probably have stuff to do" etcetera... giving people an out is probably the most important part. If they leave nobody feels weird, and if they stay then congratulations! You're on your way to making a con buddy! Everything else after that is in Kami-sama's hands.
>>
>>10151811

>>10151937

The now unofficial FB page used to handle it, but since Sak got angry with them and distanced themselves from them. They won't be added to guidebook.
I had to enter the photoshoots I wanted to see manually.

Join the discord, I will pick people up usually if they don't have friends and want to hang out and roam to panels. Most likely will plan to meet up in sat if enough people are up for it. Invite link to the discord vSEX42

How strict is the no outside food policy? I wanna bring some apple slices and a cliff bar so i dont pass out. Im sure its fine but there is nothing more infuriating than getting my food confiscated.

No costumes this year, I lost my cosplay duo ;-;
That said, I'll be a photographer and taking pics of the cool stuff I see. I'm also taking hour/half-hour slots of free shoots for any cosplayers that want to have clean photos from an amateur photographer. Ranges from 3-10 photos depending on time and the weather this year, lmao (Photo related, shot of a friend I did)
You can find me in the discord >>10152151
as dewbutt or email me at bluedewphoto@gmail.com

Drunk Call of Cthulhu to kick off the con with the bros and chicks is great.

>tfw no gf but lots of cosplay compliments
I can live with this.
The real test comes when I try to participate in night life somehow

Can anyone explain to me why they are wasting my time collecting my address and email?
Why do they need this?
It would be so much faster if they didn't add in this useless information. Why does sakuracon need my home address? What for exactly?
I even asked if they needed my email address and they said "no." So they're just wasting my time then? Ok
>>
so when's the meetup?
>>
just got back home. Man, the photoshoots were kind of a mess. Everyone at the Undertale photoshoot was stuck out in the rain since the person running it was late, and then they all had to be herded back indoors for an impromptu shoot. I'm not even sure what happened to the Berserk shoot.
>>
>>10152802
I tried to go a photoshoot but it got cancelled. It's annoying you have to check facebook constantly.
>>
Any good stories so far?

Also any if you going to the dance?
>>
>>10152700
They never asked me anything then my name. You might have a stalker on your hand gl.
>>
>>10152738
Meet up already happen but they are doing less con and more drunk and food type stuff etc.
>>
>>10152700
What context was this? Was this at registration? They literally only asked me for my ID, phone number & email. Granted, addresses are on IDs, so there's that.

We'll do con stuff if anybody wants to but there's not a lot of interesting con stuff to do this year.
>>
>>10153049
They type in the address from your license. But literally why?
>>
>live in Seattle
>see lots of cosplayers
>realize it's Sakuracon
Seeing lots of people with similar interests as me but being unable to swooce into the crowd really imparts a special kind of sadness. This happens every time I see something going on around here. I always wanted to cosplay but don't think I could make it work.

I don't even come to cgl usually but wanted to say I hope you all enjoy yourselves while you're here and mind the homeless.
