The blue armbands you see the members of the WILLE wearing in 3.0 and Thrice were the denoting markers when the signal was called to rebel against NERV of who was friend and foe. After the split in the chaos they seized the WILLE and founded some form of HQ which we see appendages of in Thrice when Asuka talks about all the time she spent living with Kensuke when the ship was getting refueled.

I think either her or someone else follows up that question with "Why blue?" and a different member in the background responds "We wish to return the sea to it's original blue hue, so blue was chosen".I know people have their gripes with the rebuilds but I like how they offer a different perspective to the series as well as serve as a sort of sequel to NGE while at the same time being something new.

It's a scenario that you dont hear much about.Ah I see what you're talking about now, yeah I hadnt considered that by the time of 2.0 they basically know what Gendo and SEELE were up to so Kaji piecing it together is sorta null at that point.It would be neat to see some more of that clandestine / espionage sorta stuff in the series given how shady of an organization NERV is. iirc the only thing that sorta fits with what you're talking about that exists atm was this game exclusively made for Japan where you're contracted as some sort of PI for NERV to figure out where the leaks are coming from, and at the end it's revealed that the player character is a friend of Kaji's, and the final mission of the game is you actually going out to plug him as is seen in the original series and the manga.

However since I dont really consider the Rebuilds to be standalone media (if you hadn't watched the original series +EoE half of the finer details in the first two films would be incomprehensible aside from "depressed boy pilots robot, robot girl gains feelings & tsundere gets jealous") I dont see this as too much of a gripe since it's assuming that you're watching the films because you saw the original series & ending movie at some point. And given how Asuka is basically the primary focus relative to all the other supporting characters in the original series, with her presence basically being essential to EoE's plot; (1/2)

Given how Misato & Asuka's character is given a full arc and conclusion in the TV show and movie while Rei and Kaworu basically stay diagetically nebulous even towards the end I can appreciate that they were brave enough to de-emphasize two fan favourites in service of what they thought would be a compelling to the greater lore of the series. That being said sure they arent perfect films ofc, you can especially feel the disjointedness between 2.0 & 3.0 with some of the settings; but overall I like that we essentially have complete stories and motivations for all of the main 3 + Misato; rather than had they just gone beat for beat and remade the original story to the T and leaving the plot threads with Kaworu and Rei untreaded.

The better aspects of the rebuilds are almost entirely on them and Shinji. My gripes with how they handled Asuka and especially Misato after 2.0. With Asuka, right off the bat you see her being subject to a fair bit of flanderization but that's not exactly unexpected when you move the focus away from a character as you suggested, but then in 3.0 it downright comical with how she acts like a teenage angst fueled toddler while supposedly being a combat veteran of 14 years. It's very jarring to go from Soryu to what she was in 3.0 imho. Then Misato goes from perfectly fine in 2.0 to an absolute mess in 3.0, with her characterization and motives being so poorly written at times that things start to break down if you think about them too much. It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but the further away the movies got from the Wunder and WILLE, the better things were. I will say, most of my gripes are with 3.0. 1.0 and 2.0 had some issues but overall were fun watches. 3.0 just got stupid at times.

They even have a moment of reconciliation after she gets shot by Toji's sister. For me at least, the characters motives being vague and contradictory kinda works in 3.0 if you look at it from the same lens as say the last stretch of episodes in the original series, especially after Kaji dies, and when Rei II dies Misato quite literally offers to fuck a 14 year old to rid him of his pain over the death of his friend, among other behavioral oddities (arguably the worst is the EoE kiss which also makes no sense)

Given how 3I in the original show was basically caused because no one wanted to actually sit down and tell Shinji what he needed to hear, same happens here with 4I in 3.0 except it's a bit more condensed and ofc suffers a bit since there's way less room for adequate pacing in a 1.5 hr film

It'd be like the part of the series where Asuka becomes comatose but you'd have a wider range of kids losing their shit and putting stress on the logistical staff like the bridge trio and Ritsuko. I can already imagine scenarios where a pilot has a mental breakdown in the field mid angel battle and ends up getting eaten or absorbed into an angel like we see in 2.0 with Rei II, and the kids now have to fight a creature that beams telepathic messages into their mind about how they should feel guilty for letting their friend die while taking the form of said friend.

I always wondered why all the times angels have tried fusing with it like Bardiel or Armisael it didnt just start the impact right there given that the angels are the spawn of Adam and Unit 01 is literally half of Lilith playdoh molded into a mech. The Rebuilds sorta answered that question with Shinji's sperg out over Rei II in 2.22 that awakens Unit 01 and starts 3I early, but since Kaworu stopped it before it got too bad with the SpoC we didnt really get to see the full ramifications of it

Corrupted Evas are definitely something that should be explored more in the series when it returns from it's hibernation because it's such a perfect blend of body horror and hard sci-fi fuckery. The reason Bardiel and Armisael stand out the most aside from Leilel and Ramiel is because Bardiel leaves so much of the terror and visuals to the imagination, wondering if Toji is getting vore'd by the blue cum or conversely if he's getting stuffed with it like a twinkie. With Armisael it during the fight when it corrupts unit 00 it literally bloats and deforms the Eva into an almost Carpenter-esque blob and then starts slowly seeping into Rei.The body horror scenarios in Eva were vastly underused for a series about self perception and pain. An angel that say causes hallucinations in the pilots to hallucinate (1/2)

We see NERV Nevada get consumed by one during the S2 engine experiments and presumably there's now some massive circle of black void in the American southwest where the facility used to be.Leilel in theory could've been an angel that Shinji believed he defeated but over time as SEELE is trying to implement the S2s into the soon to be MPEs perhaps gains it's attention once again, or perhaps the Dirac Sea encounter was so vivid for Shinji that he actually becomes the comatose pilot instead of Asuka, leaving her, Rei and perhaps Toji or Kensuke at the mercy of whatever angels come next, and with no plot armour (shinji/unit 01) around they're genuinely vulnerable and the series becomes akin to a horror series ala "what happens next, what do we do now?" Maybe we even get a reversal of the hospital scene with Asuka yelling at Baka Shinji to wake up because she's scared and wants him to hold her.

Or perhaps he actually kisses Shinji like in the manga in some sort of "this is it..." way again calling back to the Judas imagery. If Toji's mauling / death is where descent into madness starts, it's Kaji's death that basically assures the third impact. Even her death in 3.0 + 1.0 where she basically just tells Shinji she liked him before she goes tang mode was sad. Her relationship to him is such a strange balance between like, shy moe girl who secretly likes the protag, and like a sister character. He mentions he's just like Rei, but Rei wasn't exaclty a clone of Yui per se, since Rei was born from what popped out of Eva-01 during the contact experiment, only the later versions are clones, and that'st just a clone of herself. This brings into question how Kaworu would exist if not for the contact experiment.

Did they have some real strange restructuring ala Fallout's alternate US / China cold war? Nerv is said to have branches in China, the US & Germany. As well as it's explicitly stated that it's under the control of the UN. Ive always thought the three angles that assaulted the pilot's minds (Leliel, Arael and armisael) to be the most interesting and harrowing angels seen due to their role in shattering the character's mental states, so I think it would make sense for these three to have their roles expanded upon and placed as the biggest foes for the pilots to face after theve been put through hell and back like the above posts described.

The original storyboards for 2.0 actually had a way more gruesome depiction where Asuka gets impaled by a bunch of spikes and then gets her face ripped off and used by Bardiel to talk back at her and taunt her. And in the final product she just gets cummed on and then it goes in her eye for 14 years until the events of 3.0 & Thrice.iirc some or all of the rebuild angels are a combo of two of the angels seen in the show, with Bardiel sharing traits with Arael (the one that made Asuka hallucinate seeing her worst flaws) so its possible that the face thing was a hallucination too. Though in the manga we do get a glimpse of what OG Bardiel did to Toji, and that he seems to have some kind of thing spread throughout his skin and body like a kind of body horror esque manner. We only see the beginning and the very end, but it looks like it spread everywhere, and the look in his eyes almost seems to imply that he was either being controlled or killed from when it started. In the first or second draft storyboard for Eva 3.0 this was actually going to be something they did with Misato & Kaji. Misato was going to get infected by some prototype virus of the failures of infinity and she would attempt to seduce Kaji to spread it to him to his dismay at the thought of having to harm the woman he loves the most. You can see a remnant of this in the after credits preview for 3.0 where there's a quick shot of Kaji pointing a USP with a laser and having an expression of distress. Honestly the original draft for 3.0 sounded really cool and I wish Anno had followed thru.
