I was moments away from embarrassing myself and making another thread without seeing this one
I did not expect to be reminded of Mawaru Penguindrum of all things today...
Why are mentally unstable girls in fiction always so cute?
>>4091896I heard an interesting theory that because humans subconsciously assume mental disease as contagious, they keep emotional distance from people with it. If that weren't in place, we'd be far more sympathetic to them. That's why mentally unstable characters are more endearing, because we logically understand we can't catch it through the screen, so we are far more emotionally open to them.
>>4092167I think it has much more to do with portrayal, 'crazy' girls are usually either manic (she's free-spirited!) or OCD (she's quirky!) and even depressed girls get to be snarky. Writers don't want to be mean to people with mental illness so they won't show the uglier sides of it.
