Can someone give me a quick rundown on Rei?
I tried drawing Rei
>>3696061Have you seen the anime?>>3696684That is a good drawing.
>>3681313I had this pic as my winamp skin for like 10 years.
>>3696061>Can someone give me a quick rundown on Rei?There was an alien that landed on earth, but there was already another alien so the first alien sort of killed them. The first alien propagated herself as humans, but her children were sad because they were divided from each other, so to return to an undivided state they used bits of the aliens to try starting an "Impact" which is like a mix of a holocaust and sex orgy. This guy put his wife in the alien but the alien absorbed her. In trying to get his wife out Rei came out instead and they gave up, because Rei was best girl. Rei spends the entire series being best girl, then she ends the world. The guy wanted to end the world his way so he could see his wife again, but Rei ends it the way the guy's son wanted which was pretty dumb in hindsight.Rei enjoys reading, leaving trash around her apartment, making miso soup, and fishing. Rei's favorite food is garlic pork ramen without the the pork.Later Rei learns to teleport, regrow limbs, and travel through time. Despite having these abilities Rei barely uses them, choosing instead the cold embrace of death.
>>3697263Based except Rei didn't end the world
>>3697469>Rei didn't end the worldbut she should have.
>>3697469Ending the world makes her even more based
>>3698627But she didn't

How are you feeling about the final Rebuild and more Rei angst?
>>3702032There's nothing more to be said, is there?Rebuild isn't Evangelion any more, and whatever "Rei" it decides to attempt to pass off as Rei, simply isn't.Anno is passing off his morbid Rei-hate fantasies off as Evangelion, and it's not worth taking seriously beyond that.
>>3702046Rei in 2.0 was great though; she was basically manga Rei. Perhaps you would rather have the Rei from the originals, whose character development basically ended after episode 5 and who Anno said about:>The truth is, I have no emotional attachment to Rei at all. >In the midst of making Eva, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten her. Her very existence. For example, in episode seven, I remembered and added one shot with Rei. I had no attachment to her at all. I think that was okay, because in episode eight, she didn't appear. Not even in a single shot.
>>3702063Manga Rei is shit, much thanks to the scene you posted.Rebuild Rei is also shit. Both suffer from the same problem:The great setup like Rei had in NGE, but without making use of it and eventually scrapping the character.>anno quoteYes, we know Anno hates Rei and likes to take stabs at the character. Don't you have a thread on /cm/ to frequent, or maybe an Asuka thread to go to?
>>3702068So you hate the fact that she has more interaction with other characters and more obviously grapples with her nature. Rei should remain inscrutable and alien so that Asuka can get all the attention instead.
>>37020630/10 troll, begone.
>>3702074This has to be reverse trolling. Do you even understand that what you're suggesting is inane? Not to mention wrong?
>>3702074Rei has more meaningful interaction in NGE, and she is also, simply put, more respectfully treated and better off in it. Obviously we'll stick with that over some toned-down fake Rei in some spinoff - even if Sadamoto penned at the very least the first half of it.
>>3702079That's what happened in the original series. Asuka basically took all of Rei's screen time and 1-on-1 interactions with Shinji once she debuted. Fucking hated it too, because dub Asuka (I was 14 when I first watched Eva, cut me some slack) was not only a bitch but sounded annoying and histrionic as fuck as well.
>>3702063The only good Rei was the original Rei. All others have been absolutely terrible characters because the authors missed the point of Rei (see below).>>3702074She's not fucking human. She's like an alien god. Humanizing Rei misses the point of Rei. If there are any human traits, it should be in a sea of alieness. So no, Rei should not grapple with her nature because her mind operates on such a completely separate level from us that it wouldn't even come up for her. It's like a jellyfish contemplating Shakespeare, it just wouldn't happen. Rei has no real sense of self. What she does have is a sense of "humanity," more so than anyone else in Eva. Look at her comments about how Eva connects her to everything. She can see the wholeness of humanity in a way nobody else can, because she exists outside of it. She can see the interplay of their AT fields and how they are a single soul and a single angel that is separate from her AT field. She's not awkward because of mental trauma or bad parenting, but because of her innate nature allowing her to perceive the world differently from the rest of us. She'd basically be the same even without Gendo doing his damndest to turn her into his puppet. Basically, her inhumanity makes her interesting. Making her another traumatized, empty moe girl that finds contentment and fulfillment by learning what it means to be human just absolutely butchers her as a character.
>>3702088Yeah, none of that happened. It's mere Asukafag and Kaworufag fanwank.Reminder that Kaworu had one episode out of 26, and was promptly forgotten. Another reminder that Asuka was an unimportant doll while Rei and Shinji are together the key to saving mankind, the two whose only arcs actually settle the matter on the question of human existence as far as Eva is concerned.None of your shitty delusions will change that as far as the original is concerned, and the objectively inferior anti-Rei spinoffs are just that, objectively inferior anti-Rei spinoffs.
>>3702088What happened in the original series, was that Rei was present from episode one, and in every single episode except one.In those episodes, she played a pivotal role in not just the story's themes, but also in establishing and resolving it's plot through the enactment and fulfillment of her character's arc.I don't know what the actual fuck you're on about, but it's literally insane, and pretty much like being "mad" at the first six episodes because Asuka isn't in them at all, or being upset as a Kaworu fan at the rest of the show because Kaworu is only in one episode. It's stupid.Rei has the luxury of being in nearly every single episode, being important as FUCK, and not just that, being the objectively BEST girl Evangelion has put forth even 20 years later - having the combination of being well-written, cute, powerful, smart, important and immensively interesting to contemplate. A heroine-type character who actually has depth and strengths beyond being a "heroine".Rei is the actual, true best girl of Evangelion and has been, and always will be. Whatever else those "Rebuilds" or "spinoffs" try to push are at best pale imitations of what made Rei great, and sold to an unwitting or willingly ignorant audience of retarded asucucks and kaworucucks - and probably ? Sadly a few stupid Reifags who only care about moe-points.
>>3702088>>3702074>>3702063>>3702032We see you.
>>3702107Excellent take. The original Rei is the best because she just transcends all boundaries as to become ineffable. Like I can't even say she's my waifu or think of her in a sexual manner because that would be to undersell what she is, even if I think her design is extremely cute.
>>3702107I'd say Rei is human in every way that matters, but she's more than human. The idea that Rei shouldn't grapple with her nature, when she patently does so in the show is also laughable. But I completely agree with the last sentence, Rei is most definitely NOT reaching for that - she's reaching for herself, and successfully manages to do so.
Wait, what? We hate 2.0 now too? I didn't mind it.
how do you feel about long hair?>>3702542And the manga apparently too.
>>3702831>how do you feel about long hair?stop that
>>3702831So wrong, yet so right.
Here's an article that came out shortly after the NHK poll, theorizing why Asuka is more popular than Rei now when it used to be the other way around:https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/497adced033e28621d7eb2b7acc8f147165855d3
>>3702982Thanks for posting this I guess, but regardless of what the article says, the answer is obvious.Asuka has been strengthened in the story, Rei has been weakened.
need more long-haired rei brothers
>>3703757I'll give you the rest of what I have.
>>3703626>Asuka has been strengthened in the story, Rei has been weakened.Yes, that's what the article says. I was wondering whether I should translate it, but I don't think it'd garner much interest here.
>>3705531Ok, I'll just roughly translate the relevant parts:>The results of the Evangelion poll aired on NHK, May 16th. Asuka Langely Shikinami took 1st place and Rei Ayanami took 3rd. Over the course of over 25 years since the Anime first aired, these two have been portrayed as "double heroines" for the series, but Rei Ayanami was always consistently regarded as the top girl in various Anime magazines/books that came out up until the mid 2000s. Anything about Eva was more often than not advertised with Rei on the front cover. So longtime fans of the series saw these poll results as surprising, "Ayanami and Asuka have suddenly switched places in popularity!" In this article, we analyzed and speculated why and how this change in popularity took place.>The popularization of the "expressionless girl" archetype>Many believe Ayanami was consistently at the top of popularity because she established the "expressionless girl" archetype. A girl who shows more and more emotion as the show goes on, she was an entirely new character that was never seen in Anime before. However since the original airing of Eva, more and more characters following this archetype, such as in Nadesico and Haruhi, etc. have been made. The archetype came to be established as a facet of "moe", and Rei was no longer considered a new and unique character in the Anime industry.>The portrayal of Asuka Shikinami as a "good person">Many changes were made to the portrayal of Asuka's character in the new movies. She has a fierce attitude on the outside, but subtly sweet on the inside. A cute "tsundere" character that is quite different from Soryu in the original series. She no longer has attachment to Misato's ex-boyfriend Kaji, and elects pity from the audience when corrupted in Unit 03. She tries to get along with Shinji and Rei, and sacrifices herself so they can both have dinner with Gendo. She is thoroughly portrayed as a "good person". >These two elements may explain the shift in popularity.
>>3705703Thanks. You arent a Kaworuanon are you?Missing the part about Rei being degraded too.
I'm sorry but I dislike interpretation of Rei that states: She is an alien Goddess and has no connection to her human part. That is the kind of thing an asukafag or any other type of idiot would say. C'mon, can we all just accept that Rei is an entity that shuts her emotions due to the sheer responsibility of her being.
>>3705735Im with you.
>>3705728What do you mean?
Long haired Rei is a treasure. I don't have any though.
>>3705896Translators around these parts are rare.Haven't met any Rei-fans that can translate moon before. Do you consider yourself a reifag? At any rate, thanks for the translation!
Not having Rei brings me so much pain
>>3706415No sympathy for those who do not fight for Rei.
Why does so much art depict Rei having her left eye bandaged over? In the show her right eye was always the more prominent wound
>>3708346Good Q. Perhaps similar to how Misato always lacks her scar.
>>3710052ooh I love this one
Reminder that there is hope for Rei, and that hope is in YOU as a fan.If you don't know how, sound out.
How do we stop him?
>>3710211Mass-redpilling the Eva fanbase on Anno's anti-Rei nonsense.
>>3710809Is that a mirror or a camera she's holding?
>>3711303It's a phone with pic related photo.Aoba says 「樂しすうで何よりたけどさぁ…いい加減、自分でアイロンがけしなさいよ…」 "looks fun more than anything, but... laziness, do your own ironing..."But Rei is like 「やだ〜みて〜みて〜」 "noooo, look, look!"So Aoba gets more mad 「ヤダもーじゃないの!」 "ugh, it's not 'no'!"
>>3710213I've tried but it's useless, Asukafags took over /a/
>>3711839Thanks for the translation. Are you a Reifag?>>3711938They've amassed just about anywhere and will continue to do so. You'll have to find other Rei fans to make a difference. This thread is a good start, there's a discord even if you're into that. No in fact the discord is essential...search "Rei Defense Force" on google, should be the first hitlots of actual Rei fans there
>>3705735Preach Reibro. Her journey of discovery of her own humanity, regardless of her origins, is the most touching part of her character. Impossible not to love Rei.>>3711991Not same anon, but as a translator I'm always willing to help translate any Rei material. For Rei, anything. I'd defend her with my life.
>>3711991>Thanks for the translation. Are you a Reifag? No probs, and of course.>>3711938There was a comfy Rei thread on /a/ recently (>>>/a/205106305), enemies only noticed it at +150 posts.
>>3712468!Really? If you're a Reifag, who knows Japanese.... you've got value beyond measure. There's so many things that slip past us due to the language barrier. If you stick around; give the discord server mentioned earlier a go.search "Rei Defense Force" on google, should be the first hit
>>3711839>"ugh, it's not 'no'!"I'm not sure I get this part. Rei's trying to distract Aoba with the photo, so he gets angry for her trying to change the subject?
>>3712518Literally speaking Aoba quotes Rei's yada, huffs, then uses negative inflection. What's being communicated is "don't just say 'no' (and help me out with the ironing)" but it's expressed in a shorthand form. I'm not sure how to convey that in English.>>3712480People get doxed just by using Discord because it's an insecure program. I would be doxed and banned instantly, then lose my job. Also, I wouldn't want to become part of a clique or take activity away from these threads. Apologies, but I'll stay here.
>>3712537>Literally speaking Aoba quotes Rei's yada, huffs, then uses negative inflection. What's being communicated is "don't just say 'no' (and help me out with the ironing)"I see. I'm probably trying to make too much sense of a joke drawing, considering the whole "Shinji in a dress" part. Also, image limit.

Also, I wouldn't want to become part of a clique or take activity away from these threads. Apologies, but I'll stay here.I get your concerns. Most of us here are already on the discord though, and that's where we put most of the text instead of "spamming" this thread. Is there any other platform you'd use though? I don't really believe you'd stand any chance of getting doxed there, but there's other alternatives for chat.
