I dont really get why they want ETFs. Why dont people just buy the coins themselves and self-custody rather than relying on some firm which could potentially go bust at any time to hold them for you?

Most people just set and forget their 401ks, which works in the stock market's favor and props up a lot of the market. If people had to invest individually via phone call or something the stock markets would be a tiny fraction of what they are now, but that's essentially how people have to buy crypto now. That's also the reason they are so heavily regulated and the SEC keeps rejecting them. It's a definining line between being a collectible and a retirement asset.
