Moral of the story: Never hold any of the chain's token on the same wallet we have a fuckton in shitcoins. If we want to interact with it, send that chain's token and then work with it. Also set up notifications so we immediately know when someone puts tokens in our account.
Never holding ETH again gg
>>
Guys what if I just use a normal usb drive to store my crypto on?
>>
How to avoid this:
>Buy 2 ledgers from official leger website

>Other one you use to interact with dAPPS and trade with
Or just use metamask as your hot wallet

>>
>>40843191

He most likely "stole" it himself for tax purposes.
Either that or he kept his seed phrase in an email or something.

>obviously you cannot buy hardware wallets because they might contain malware
Kill yourself retard

>>
>>40843371
You stupid fuck brainlet. Your computer literally never sees your private key at any time. That is the ENTIRE FUCKING POINT of the Ledger.

>>40843075
complete retard babbling nonsense

anyways the #1 cause of lost funds is user error; not recording seed phrase, losing it, not storing it properly, forgetting the 25th word secret pass phrase, etc. The next most common is phishing, which is really easy to avoid on a hardware wallet by double checking transactions and never inputting your seed phrase on your computer
>>
>>40843310
Yeah you should be good. Same thing with me.

As long as the seed phrase card is blank and a seed phrase was given to you when you initialized your ledger then there's no way anyone can get that phrase unless you give it to them.. or back up the phrase in a .txt doc on your desktop like an idiot.

Looks like this guy input his seed phrase on some phishing site according to his other comments.

>>
>>40843310
dumb nigger, buy a brand new phone right now, make sure it's updated.

There's another exploit that retards are falling for and losing their funds. The whole point of separating your funds between a cold and hot wallet is to remove the possibility for a mistake.
This one literally ask users to transfer their funds and they do it. It's not as straight forward as that, but it's the same idea. Just use different wallets

>>
>>40843613
No, if it's encrypted it doesn't really matter. Obviously a hardware wallet where you never enter it into a computer is most ideal, but as long as it's strong encryption and your computer isn't compromised, it doesn't really matter. Honestly even just sitting in a fucking regular txt file would be fine in like 99.9% of cases kek, but obviously you should prob not do that

Like 99% of these "hacked" wallets are people who fall for phishing scams.

>>
>>40843595
>How would one even respond to this?
You would not. They do not know how much money you own, only that you have bought a ledger. This is likely a mass email sent to ledger purchasers who had their data leaked. Which is the reason they are asking for 500$, ignore it and they'd likely send another message before not bothering to try contacting you again. Think about it, if you really held 200k+, or even just 50 -100k, would anyone who is a real threat contact you ahead of time threatening to kill you, unless you gave them 500$? They pick that number because it is 'a lot' for a lot of people, the minute you send them that much they'd also be made aware of your wallet address and could begin to target you more specifically and change their mind about their tactics, they'd actually have a reason to find you with both these sets of information if you held enough and gave both of the two away, without it its not worth the hassle or even that feasible.

>>
>>40843695

>>
>>40843595
Don't respond at all. It's most likely just a boilerplate email sent out to everyone whose addresses got released as part of the Ledger hack from way back when. It's one thing to try to threaten someone into giving you some money. It's another entirely to actually physically go to them and take what they have physically by force. Additionally, if you're actually going to break into someone's home to rob them, do you really want to give them a heads up that you're coming? Fuck no. If it were me, as someone who's actually willing to go to your place with a gun and beat the shit out of you until you give me what I want, you're not going to have a clue I'm coming until I'm there. You won't know anyone's gunning for you until I wake you up at 3am with a gun in your face.

This is fake news. if you could pass Ledger attestation, you're not fucking burning this exploit on some retards via an Amazon supply chain attack expecting to hit high value targets.

You're either attacking a single high value target via Evil Maid, or you're selling the exploit for a gorillion bucks. You're not gonna catch much on Amazon (and yes, when you can fake attestation, 250k times a few people and other people's pocket change IS nothing).

The ETH sweep part also makes no sense.

>>40842135

I can believe losing an ERC20 token because you didn't bother to read the contract data and confirm it, but you cannot do this with pure ETH because it would show up directly on every confirmation separately since it's not a contract and is the base token.

Also, he lost the ETH first, and then didn't notice, and used the same scam contract AGAIN twenty minutes later after seeing his Ledger ETH account balance vanish?

This entire thing just isn't adding up. This dude is lying or just lost his fucking passphrase somehow, and whoever got it forgot to leave ETH for the LINK sweep so came back.

That's all.

Lucky for him at least it's only like 200k so it's basically nothing, he can get back to it easily even working from India

Looking at your net worth on world level is peak poorfag behavior. You do realize like 75% of the world are living in mud huts and make like $2 a day? Being top 10% in the world doesn't mean shit

I keep hundreds of thousands of dollars on a 10 year old Samsung phone that doesn't charge properly. I removed the bluetooth chip, microphone, cameras and the entire simcard assembly, but I'm worried about fucking something up replacing the daughter board so it charges properly, so I've just been using it as little as possible the last 6 months, it's on 20% battery right now...

I don't understand how people just get "hacked" though, I'm almost willing to bet he put his seedphrase in willingly somewhere malicious, or interacted with some random contract that gives full access to his wallet away
>>

I used to download apks of paid apps and games. I have since deleted all of them. Is there a risk of malware after I uninstalled them?
>>
>>40847840
super unlikely.

Just factory reset then update your phone again if it's really bugging you. transfer your shit to an exchange beforehand, of course.

The ledger box comes sealed with plastic and gives you a list of items that should be in the box. If any of those things are missing then don't use it.
>>
>>40844429
Yeah most people are completely oblivious as to how much work it takes to write malcode that doesn’t get flagged by windefender or just writing modern windows malware in general. this is of course on top of having to get on the machine in the first place. it’s just a bunch of little things that add up to an ass load of work

What's that worth, $4k? You could exchange that for 2 gold coins and hide it a lot easier.
A Ledger for crypto is even easier to hide.

Yes, the legder program checks the hardware for tampering.

This is why it wasn't an approval scam, malicious transaction, or "eth glitch" or w/e. Whoever hacked him had his key and could initiate transactions not just get him to sign a malicious one. Because they had to send eth back then steal the link and then the eth again.

So the retard either used a ledger that was set up already (like a retard) or entered his seed on the computer (like a retard) into some malware or something. But either way he is a retard.
>>
100% had a malicious extension running in his browser or entered his seed into some scamsite to try to get an airdrop.

For the record why do people use hardware wallets again? You have to trust ledgers system to be functional, why not just work with a paper wallet or just remember your seed? Maybe write it down in X different parts jumbled in an order that makes sense to you but not to anyone else directly?
>>
>>40852722
This.
He let his sneed phrase out somewhere.
>>
>>40841976
I feel bad for the guy.
>>
>>40853092
>For the record why do people use hardware wallets again?

Because if you aren't a retard, you can use safety use your paper wallet / recovery phrase, even if your computer is infected with malware. But it only allows you to DETECT you are getting scammed, because if you just sign every transaction without looking you can still get scammed.

But its clear that this guy's seed was compromised because the hacker did multiple transactions. Unless this dude was so retarded he just kept confirming random transactions for 2 minutes...

But you're right if you're not using your wallet, if its just cold storage, then a hardware wallet isn't any safer. But its great for defi because if you just simply verify transactions then its impossible to get your funds hacked even if you get malware.

>>
>>40843910
Highly doubt they'd make a new wallet for each personalized ransom email. It'd be the only way to discern whose wallet is whose without them confirm its their wallet.
>>
>>40844420
The government can't do shit about a contract that's already posted on the blockchain. Not even the creator can "change it" (I'm skipping a lot of intricacies in how they upgrade projects, but the point still stands).

The beauty of a decentralized world.
>>
>>40851733
If you had to generate a seed phrase and you weren't given a seed phrase you'll be fine.
