Are ember tetras a good fit with endler livebearers? I want something small but capable of controlling their numbers in a 20 gal

Here.
>>
I have a 5 gallon filled with like. 10 amanos, holy shit this was a mistake, it's my absolute most boring tank. I hope they'll be less shy as they get bigger so I can actually see them do shit.
My neocardenia mix tank is way more active and interesting.
Someone suggested tossing like, 2 scarlet badis in, I suppose that's an option but keeping fish in a 5 feels dirty.
>>
>>4670450
badis are absolutely fine in a 5. other options include a single betta or male endlers, lot of tiny rasboras. 5 gallons is fine as a nanotank especially in freshwater. people run reefs in tanks that small.
>>
>>4670450
Take the soft water shrimp pill anon, 5 gal wouldnt cost much to fill/maintain at a good local fish shop. You can carry 5gal of water effortlessly, right anon?
>>
>>4670451
Alrighty got myself a 10 gallon for endlers and a betta. But Badis are my top option currently for it. The tank has more than enough snails, and i've got vinegar eels, so live food wise they should be content hopefully.
>>
>>4670460
Man, I'd like to but until I get a current living situation issue sorted, i cant buy anymore tanks, and I aint getting rid of my Amanos cause I do legit like them.

If youre curious or want to make some suggestions though, heres my current set up:
20 gallon long with hillstreams, corydoras, odessa barbs, and some danios that I dont know why i still got em. Since its overstocked its got a cannister and sump, but the sump is an interesting DIY set up i made using old betta tanks i found, so its got neos and assassins hanging in it.

A 10 gallon UNS shallow with a cow pasture theme for my neos

a 10 gallon standard with endlers and a betta and some trooper ghosts who refused to die.

the above mentioned 5 gallon, its primarily purpose was a bonsai tree emersed growth experiment (ficus)

a 40 gallon with 3 Apistos (1 male 2 female) 12 blu eye spotted rainbows, and whenever the endlers overpopulate the 10 gallon, the excess gets moved into the 40.
>>
>>4670441
No personal experience but sounds solid. They're both too nimble to nip each other, and nipping doesn't really happen in big enough groups anyway.

Like 12-15 of each is perfectly fine in a 20, you could even get some kuhlis or cories to keep the bottom occupied.

Thanks anon. I don't use C02. There's no need for the plants I'm using. Post pictures of your tank? It probably looks way better than you think.
>>
How "mature" does a tank need to be for bamboo, or even vampire shrimp?
LFS has some and I really want to get one for my community tank, but it's only three months old. It's fairly heavily planted, but I'd probably need more hardscape for it to get comfy in, plus I'm not sure if "mature" just means the plants are shedding and regrowing.
>>
>>4670498
for these shrimp tank maturity doesn't matter that much imo. what you need is

1. flow
2. particulate dense water and/or spot feeding like you'd do for a coral

Hardscape doesn't matter that much nor do biofilms, mature plants are a plus but not necessary, the main things you want is a perch in a high flow area though my vampire shrimp would always make heavy use of caves.
I've been able to keep bamboo shrimp to about the 1.5-2 year lifespan doing this though I have never had a vampire shrimp last more than that and apparently they can live ~2x as long.

I recommend bamboo shrimp over vampire shrimp if you've never kept filter shrimp. especially if its a high-moderate light tank. My vampire shrimp would only ever come out when the lights were on if I let duckweed 100% take over the top.
>>
>>4670505
oh I also forgot to specify for feeding, something real fine, 0.5mm pellets or smaller. I would usually spotfeed him when I fed the tank, if he was at the top I would just kind of feed so that the flow would carry food to him, if he was sitting lower i'd put the food in some tweezers to get it down closer to him. I use a lot of nano-xtreme and aquarium coop fry food for full grown nanofish anyways though, the smaller pellets help distribute the same mass of food more evenly imo.
>>
>>4670176
>I'd be more into Innovative Marine if they didn't stick their ugly-ass logo on the glass of all their tanks
They don't do that anymore. Mine certainly doesn't have one, regardless of what the pictures look like on their site (some of their pictures don't seem to be updated) The only way to tell it's an IM system is a small sticker on the side, which I can obviously remove.

>>4670204
>what can I still manage good quality upkeep on if I'm sick, stressed out, have to move, things are going all wrong in my life?
Great rule and very true for aquariums as well.
>>

>>
>>4670326
Yeah jungle Val does that. It seems to grow wider after I trim it too.
>>
Do you guys unplug your heater when you work in the tank? I just had the idea to do it and realized I had never thought to do it ever before.
>>
>>4670514
to be fair if you're keeping simple community aquariums maintenance doesn't increase that much beyond the first tank. I have 8 tanks and 3 terrariums under my care and the daily work is less than 5 minutes. I only have one tank that needs a regular water change and I have slowly increased the plant mass enough that it's finally getting pushed out, sub 10ppm nitrate lasts for ~6 weeks now when it used to be 3. And if you have AWC plumbed you can end up with legitimate near 0 maintenance systems.

Terrariums are a little harder but imo it's a similar principle. Balance what you can and automate what you can't balance. I make sure my shit needs as little attention from me as possible explicitly because I don't want to have to feel trapped by it. I can go on vacation for a week without worrying about anything. Shit I had a power outage once while I was away for 72hours, no filters, no flow, no feeding, no light and I didn't lose anything.
>>
Do any US sites/brands sell a 15 or 20 gal long rimless that isnt like 150 dollars
>>

Not really. One of the reasons why it's always pricier is because it tends to be made of low iron glass, whereas Aqueon glass is super green but at that thickness it's somewhat okay.

If price is really that big a deal, you could always get glass panes, cut and silicone it together yourself (some places will cut it for you).

My planted tank has it on a smart plug which I just switch off if I really need to, however it is laying horizontal in the back of the tank behind rockwork so it is completely unseen and submerged unless I am doing a 100% water change.

For my reef tank it's in my sump connected to a controller so it's really rare that it would be exposed to air, and if I do plan on sump maintenance to that level I would just turn off the controller or set it to never turn on the heater.

>>4670204
No its not anything like reptiles. Aquariums basically are little to no maintenence once they are seasoned. All you have to do is feed, and sometimes water change (need for water changes is wildly dependent on a myriad of factors, too many to list off in one post) but basically if you have a well planted tank, that you don't overfeed like crazy and don't overstock like crazy, water changes are more of a every month or two thing (to keep ph from sinking too much over time and to replenish minerals and stuff in the water)

Well, considering you have a topfin tank, I wouldn't spend too much money on it. $15 for the hinged glass lid. Light depends on whether you eventually plan on getting a new tank but of similar dimensions. E.g. a low iron rimless tank, in which case you would reuse the light so you'd want it to be pretty good.

I kinda just did this tank to get back into the hobby. I am trying to figure out how to get a big piece of furniture I recovered from the roadside into my house which will act as a stand for a 20 long

I really want to do a better substrate this time. What's the preferred substrate for doing soil under, these days? people used the fluval stratum a lot back in the day but I think I surmised it was too expensive and you could use cheaper products to achieve the same means.

just use airline tubing or something and get it out with suction, simple as
worst that happens is a large ammonia spike and your betta, being a virgin smellcuck, goes to investigate and take a huge whiff which overwhelms its senses and dies from trying to imagine the smell.
>>
>>4671083
>>4671106
do you have a turkey baster?
you can just use the turkey baster to suck it up
if it's inaccessible / you can't reach it with the turkey baster, then suck in water to the turkey baster and use it to blast the plant / shrimp repeatedly to dislodge it so that it falls into your substrate
>>
>>4671111
>>4671122
I have a siphon but it’s not strong enough + won’t reach. When I say it’s in the worst possible spot I mean this shrimp must’ve crawled all the way in the back against the glass and some stem plants I have planted in the back and died. Whatever, fuck it I’m just leaving it and will do daily water changes or something I’m not fucking up my entire tank over this little faggot shrimp
>>
>>4671125
wat?
get a step stool and blast it with a turkey baster
you can be creating flow in the tank with the turkey baster / blasting it from a foot away
I don't see how how you can't reach it - it's not like you have to touch it, you just need to be able to hit it with water
if you do decide to leave it, test for ammonia and nitrite everyday, and maybe even get prime on hand just in case
how long has your tank been established? if for more than 6 months, the bacteria should be able to process a single shrimp

Do you have plants in your aquarium? If you have duckweed, it will definitely handle the ammonia spike. I'd just leave it in there instead of messing with the scape.
I've had plenty of inverts kick the bucket (ghost shrimp are treated as feeder shrimp, they're kept in horrible conditions, that's why they're so cheap) and they ended up food for the snails, which in turn resulted in food for the duckweed.

I'm gonna be getting Mr.Autism a new, bigger tank now that his fins are mostly healed.
I have a few questions before I select a tank. I'm gonna do another community tank for him but not in a tall. I want Khuli Loaches, I have more than enough Medaka to act as a dither fish, and after watching Fishtory's video on it, a female Betta. Plus an unknown amount of yellow neocard shrimp.

So with that in mind, will a 20 long work or would a 29 standard be a better choice?
>>
>>4671166
I get those time to time, pretty sure they're aphids. Touch them, if they don't jump, they're not springtails.

You can add a lady bug to the top of your aquarium, or some fish will get up there for them. I had a betta that would hang out on the leaves and munch them, I think she actually ate herself to death doing it.

Alternatively, shake the floaters off under the water and they all become fish food at once.

Weird corner of the store where fish go to die on neon colored rocks. The red/purple bettas are ugly and they definitely remind me of horrific pet shops like that
>>
>>4671257
It used to upset me so much because in all the times I went I never saw another person buy one....I bought one there myself because I felt sorry for it looking like it was dying and it lived for about 14 days in my care. taking care of bettas is harder than you get told at first, I couldn't save it and felt bad, didn't have another fish for years. thinking back, the water was literally cloudy in his cup with a bunch of dissolved food pellets in teh bottom

I'm a bit concerned about how reclusive my shrimp are. I put about 8 in the tank a week ago. Now it's rare to see even one out and about during the day time. Sometimes I can see that a few more are lurking inside the LOG, and there's plenty of other cover afforded by the moss and plants - is it really possible they're all just hiding? They could be dead and I'd have no idea, the water parameters are fine except from some cloudiness.
There was at least one female carrying a ton of eggs, do they hide away until the eggs are hatched?

What's the rough ratio of fish sold to dead fish on your stock? Does it vary widely across species, or pretty uniform?

Do you actually quarantine, or do you just toss the fish into a tank "alone" but part of a larger water system like they use at petco/petsmart?

What's the intake routine like for shipments? Do you medicate and or just remove the floaters and put them on the shelves?

Some sensitive fish die en masse like cardinals and angles where as African cichlids rarely ever pass, but for the most part I would say that the ratio is 75% alive to 25% dead.

Sadly our QT is poor, we just dose the systems with methylene blue as needed. And we have auto water change racks that are 10~ joined 50gs.

The shipments are the most fun! we just acclimate the fish in the bags for an hour or so then strain them in a barrel then dump them in. Nothing crazy and I'm sure that's why we have a higher morality rate.

I hope this was informative :)

>>4671432
Yes, but know that your tank will turn into /d/ because clam shrimp are famous for having absurdly gigantic sperm. Like, some sperm are longer than the animal's body and visible by eye, they have to coil inside the testes just to fit inside the male. The collective volume is so great that the female will inflate like a balloon after taking them.

Also, they showed up in Berserk back during the Sea God arc!

yeah? i mean i know you're trolling but anabantoids tend to not like the kind of tank you have provided. No line of sight breaks, no cover (hence "ITS HIDING IN THE JAVA FERN :(" because that's the only place it has). The tank is full of things the betta perceives as a threat, many bettas will shut down and hide in those circumstances. If it was a tank with lower stocking the same fish might be aggressive towards them. You can keep the fish alive in there but you aren't going to see the same kind of behavior out of a betta kept like that that you'd get from one kept in a decent tank. Similar to putting it in a sterile bowl it will just sit there 99% of the time.

its okay though you know everything and are really smart about fish because you kept a bunch of platys alive in toilet water.

Camera phones are not bad at all, but compared to real cameras they are far inferior. This fact does not really matter too much because most people care more about content than image quality. Showing off your fish to your fishy friends is a little different, but phones are definitely adequate.

That polarizing filter I mentioned may be very useful for fish photography because it can reduce reflections significantly. Might be able to get one for phone also.

how are they doing that? by tossing him around? he investigated the territory and found a place to hide because that's what he likes to do.

seems to me that you're just looking for an opportunity to sperg out and now that i've (sort of) addressed the overstocking issue you're turning your attention to some imaginary bogey man that you've invented.

betta fish like to hide. that's why betta caves exist. but my betta won't use the cave that i've provided for him and instead hides somewhere else. at least i can still see him where he hides now and that's my main priority. to have my fish on display for all to see.
he had a tank all to himself, but he was still hiding because that's what he does. i read other anons telling stories about their bettas being autistic and causing trouble in their tanks. one guy even calls his fish "mister autismo". bettas have varying personalities and while some bettas cause trouble mine is docile and pleasant. maybe that's because he has a loving environment or maybe it's genetic. either way i have a beautiful fish that likes to hide and you will never, ever have sex. stay mad as hell at your imaginary bogey man.

I know goldfish need "more" filtration but it seems like no one can quantify what the fuck that means. I just want a 60 gal tank with 3 fish. Has anyone ever utilized freshwater sponges in their tank? They look cool and it seems like it could be incredibly based.
>>
>>4672085
I've heard that you should get a filter with a GPH rating of at least 10 times the size of your tank. I use an Aquaclear 70 (rated for 300 GPH max) on my 29 gallon tank, plus a big double sponge filter, and I never have problems with too many nitrates or unclear water.
>>
>>4672094
I'm sure people have done it but IIRC they're filter feeders so you probably have to treat them somewhat like a coral and have particulate rich water or spot feed. Anything you get will probably be wild collected, probably an undescribed or unidentifiable species and care will be experimental. People do pick them up as hitchhikers when collecting stuff out of ponds somtimes. Bryozoans too which are even weirder.

>>4672085
the whole goldfish need more filtration thing is FUD from goldfish karens. They're just a larger fish. filter for it like you'd filter for any fish of an equivalent size. I have 1 in a 40 gallon community with 420gph total flow running through an undergravel with 4'' of gravel. I'd feel comfortable running a trio in there if I didn't have a community and a scape that would limit the swimming space too much for my tastes with that many large fish.

The aquaclear or a small canister would probably be adequate. But yeah never believe anything you read online about goldfish, bettas or axolotls. I think because they're all entry level and easy to care for everyone has an opinion and most of them are worthless. With goldfish, a lot of people have been gaslit away from even keeping them.
>>
>>4672094
I did some that I found in a lake up at camp. They were awesome but died eventually, probably because I hade pozzed copper and algecide laced city water. Might try them again next time I go up there. They are green and grow on the sunken sticks and shit
>>
>>4672104
I forgot to mention I would try them again because now I have an RODI setup
>>
After 44 days, I removed my hang on back so that my canister could take over. But now I’m testing nitrite and actually seeing, not fully 0.25 ppm but not quite 0 ppm either. By this point, I think my hang on back has been too dry. Should I just say fuck it we ball and hope for the best? I thought for sure over 40 days would be enough to cycle the new filter.
>>
>>4672103
>With goldfish, a lot of people have been gaslit away from even keeping them.
Yeah, I bet all the bullshit online has been responsible for many people just flushing them down the toilet or dumping them in local bodies of water, which are both way more harmful than people keeping them in smaller tanks. But oh no, whether or not they grow "to their full potential" is apparently far more important.
>>
>>4672126
Just keep it as is. So what I'm assuming happened was half your media was in your HOB and the other half in the canister. Both were populated by nitrifying bacteria. You got rid of the HOB and its media and decreased the overall nitrifying capacity by 50%. This is why you're seeing a spike.

It'll build up to carrying capacity very quickly though so I wouldn't worry about it.

If on the other hand you moved all your HOB media to your canister (thereby keeping all media) and you're still seeing a spike, then I would be concerned that there is something amiss with the canister. Perhaps the flow is not quite right.

>>4672104
It must be fun to try and figure out care for cool things like a sponge. There would be benefit to the tank if you got it thriving, right?
>>
>>4672085
Goldfish are notoriously dirty but 2 aquaclear 110s for a 60 (i assume that’s 48 x 13) is fine. Easier to maintain than a canister. Don’t neglect water changes
>>
>>4672086
It looks like that kit works on exactly the same principle as the reagent tests, just has a spectrophotometer to measure the colour changes more accurately
>>
>>4672086
You should read about each test. Some are good for both fresh and salt. Some have specific versions for fresh vs. salt.

As for the multiparameter kit, it's kind of garbage. They advertise that it's a great deal because you get nine checkers in one, but it's not.
1) You're not saving money because of those nine checkers, you're only going to be using a few of them. Nitrite? Really? Who the fuck cares about getting 0.01 ppm accuracy on Nitrite and who the fuck is testing it so often you'd need a photometer for it?
2) Each test is exactly the same as the individual checkers, which means if you're doing Phosphate, you're not doing anything else for several minutes while it counts down. If you had individual test kits, you could bang out one or two other tests while you wait for Phosphate or Nitrate to finish.

The multiparameter tester is updatable so it's best to send an email to see which freshwater tests have been programmed into it. It's just a photometer so there's little reason that it couldn't be programmed for every one of Hanna's freshwater tests. The reagents it uses are the same as the individual checkers, so it's really just a firmware thing.

You could have just done a eurobrace on top. It's harder now that the tank is filled. In retrospect tearing off the trim is really something you should have done well before you filled the tank.

See pic, the brace is made of four straight pieces, very easy to cut yourself. You could also do cross-member braces but in your case I would advise eurobracing.

even beyond the tank size and anti-stunting garbage (I personally don't/wouldn't keep stunted goldfish but there is not much good evidence that it's bad for them) just the sheer number of contradictory recommendations I see amazes me. Like, people, they live in toilet water from 33-100 degrees. They are not hard to keep properly. Yeah a bowl is a fucking bad idea, no shit, but a 20 high with a reasonable filter is fine for a single non-stunted fish, a 29 for a pair. You do not need a 100 gallon tank for 3 goldfish and goldfish do not get to a foot long (body+tail maybe but the tail doesnt contribute anything to its metabolic activity), nor do they need a chiller which i have also seen recommended.

>>4672140
just doubling up on this. Nitrites below 1ppm IMO are not a 911 scenario, unless they are very high or the tank is heavily stocked/low oxygenation to start with they will take awhile to start causing damage. If you're persistently reading nitrites after a week or so there's something you need to fix in there.

I have never used them for freshwater, so cannot attest to their accuracy for freshwater, but I can say
>do NOT buy the master test kit - you 1) don't save any money by doing so and 2) more importantly, you get forced to do each test 1 by 1, instead of doing them simultaneously
for example, nitrate and phosphate test, for the marine test, you need to shake the vials for both of these tests for 2 minutes, nitrate needs to wait 7 minutes, phosphate needs to wait 3 minutes before second reading. With the master tester, that would mean shaking the nitrate vial for 2 mins, waiting 7 mins, shaking phosphate 2 minutes, waiting 3 minutes, 14 minute total process
compared to if you have two separate testers, a phosphate checker and a nitrate checker, you are done in 7 minutes, are able to shake them at the same time, put them in the checkers and hit the button that puts the 7 minute timer countdown and 3 minute countdown timer
They are extremely accurate in marine, and I cannot imagine testing any other way. They make testing very easy, very fast, very accurate - no guess work, no looking at shades of color under different light / sunlight trying to differentiate between small shade differences - you get an exact number reading
I do not see why they wouldn't work for freshwater even more accurately, as marine has more "shit" in the water for it to muddy up the results
I highly, highly recommend them
Doing a little digging here - I don't think Hanna makes a nitrate checker for freshwater that's the same little 'egg' design - as far as I know - HI96786 NITRATE CHECKER PHOTOMETER is the only freshwater nitrate one from Hanna, which is $345 (compared to the 'egg' costing $55 --- this is wayyyyyy too much for a nitrate checker lmao - so probably best to just stick with the API color test

Ah, that makes sense. I was going to move the media into the canister filter, but I hadn’t considered this so didn’t (and it’s pretty full right now as is).

Unrelated, but the only open space is currently the shipped-with charcoal bags, but I was intending to replace that with phosphate remover bags because I am having a small Cyanobacteria issue and I wanted to test if it would help.

>>4672168
I’ll keep an eye on it, then. Thanks, guys.
>>
>>4672172
I see reviews on the Amazon page of the high range nitrate egg shaped one ($64 and prime) that says it works fine for freshwater and people have even tested against specific nitrate solutions.

I honestly didn’t know these existed. I think I’ll invest, the color tests fucking suck.

I was planning on doing this but couldn't find glass for it so didn't. In the meantime I tested it a bunch of times and found a calulator thing that let me have a rough idea of if this would hold and the glass is thick enough. When it's fully filled there is a slight bow in the glass but comparatively with other stuff ive seen it doesnt look too bad. I'd say the bowing on the front facing glass is about 1mm at most. Usually I am more confident in my DIY capabilities but I have never worked with glass before and had a rough time getting the bracing off. I think it COULD BE fine without bracing but i'm very into this now and it would kill me if this broke so I am going to order some glass to brace it with

>it seems that you can assume that the correct level is always 2-3ppm lower than the test results
>my interpretation of salifert reading was pretty much spot-on 5ppm; perhaps a touch higher.
>then used the checker and got 5.5 ppm.
>I bought a Hanna Nitrate checker this week. I tested my tank water with the Hanna, Salifert and APi test and the results are very similar.
Hmmmm!
Maybe it does work
there are some people responding to Q&A on Amazon saying it doesn't work, but I think those saying "No!" are just assuming since it says marine
Anyone who has tried it themselves says that it works fine - that it may be off by 2-3ppm [which you can factor in] but even so, it is still much more accurate than any of the color tests
>pic related
They are 100% worth it, make testing a breeze
Only downside is buying the reagents - probably costs you around $0.50 per test
BTW - Hanna instruments very often will run a 15% off sale on bulkreefsupply, usually around this time / black friday, so if you are planning on getting the checkers, I would check out BRS and see if they run the discount - if you're buying $300+ worth, could save you $45+

Purple Spotted Gudgeon btw. One of my if not my favorite fish. Hope they show up at the lfs so I can get some more of them. Extremely beautiful, personable, pettable, friendly fish. Only downside is they are very predatory and have big mouths. I've had many of them in the past, and they are really ambitious when it comes to filling their gullets. Elotridids in general are amazing aquarium fish.

hello, update on my 1st tank. figured out why my dwarf water lettuce was rotting. the guppies ate all the roots off them so they just fell apart on their own, got a cover for the window upstairs so the tank isn't being blasted with sunlight every day now. everything seems to be balancing out now.

There is absolutely nothing better than fish that like or are at least cool with touching. My ropefish have taken to handfeeding incredibly quickly. I think they'd freak if I pulled them out of the water like that still (even though they enjoy being out of it) but hopefully they'll be so trusting in time.

There are cories in there with him and he doesn't go after them. Also it willl never be an issue unless the gudgeon is full size and you have a smaller than normal cory. Cories are just pretty unappealing to predators in my experience, because of their awkward shape, armor, and spines.

which is exactly why they like to hide in a community tank.

i had a really good chat with one of the guys at my local fish shop and we walked around the huge store looking at a few of the established community tanks that had male bettas in them and they all like to hide. my male betta is displaying normal behaviour for a male betta in a community tank.
it's females that are more adventurous.

>the problem is that you think bettas are like people
not true. i know they're just fish. it's the karens in this thread who unironically believe that their fish are their friends because they have no human friends. i know they're just fish and my fish aren't my friends.

I'm not keeping up with this but if I am correct your betta is being hidey or withdrawn, flanders? Bettas that kept with a lot of tough fish that rival it in size in an open tank tend to get a little intimidated. They are shy fish that are used to thick vegetation and plentiful cover. If you added some floating cover, like leaves and free floating plants like water sprite, moss and hornwort, he would become much more confident. I keep a lot of different anabantids so I personally know that heavy cover is important to them, especially when there are other fish in the tank.
Also your livebearers will love grazing on the extra surface area

correct. he has selected an area behind the heater to be his territory and he rarely ventures out from there. i've provided a "betta cave" for him but he won't use it and i think that's because he prefers to be near the surface.
i'm reluctant to add floating plants because i don't want to obstruct the light, and from what i've read some floating plants are a pest.
the anubius that i have in the tank is still young so hopefully as it grows it provides more shelter so he's more comfortable but i do want him on display because he's a beautiful animal. i don't really want him hiding all day.
