I know it's normal for cats to want to eat more as it gets colder, but this year all three of ours have been kind of insane about it. This tux-wearing idiot was abandoned and nearly starved to death, so he's always been food-insecure, but even our other two are just eating ABSURD amounts of food lately. Hopefully this is just overcompensation and they'll stop being so hungry once they adapt.

What kind of water fountains do you guys recommend? I was looking more at the stainless steel models, because ceramic might not be ideal after a certain while, and I’m trying to find a model whose pumps won’t break after a month or so.

Currently, our two boys drink filtered water in two large plastic bowls from Walmart.

Also, have you guys have any experience making your own cat trees, or should I just fork up the cash to buy a heavy duty cat tree? Our current is wobbly, and I’m waiting for a heavy duty tree on Chewy to go on sale.

/kot/, I have a dilemma. I want to get another cat, but my baby at home has feline herpes. Even with supplements she's still extremely sneezy. If I bring another cat home, an adult who's vaccinated, would she catch it as well? Would it be bound to happen from direct and indirect contact, or would the likelihood of her catching it be lessened as she'd an adult with a fully developed immune system?

Have any of you brought another cat home when you have a cat with herpes already? How did it go?

Do cats get more or less tame as they age? Or is it sort of dependent?

You can try feeding them once more per day, but cut the portions a little bit. Even if the total amount of food is the same, they may not get as hungry between feedings and the whole gorging cycle might become a little more sane.

Also, check the fat content of the food you are feeding them. If you're concerned about them overeating, look for the lowest fat content food they will tolerate. It won't stop the problem, but could be one part of keeping it under control. Maybe look at some of the "senior" food available and see if they'll eat it, even temporarily, just to get through the seasonal hump. They'll have to decide if they're hungry enough to eat something that isn't a favorite just for the satisfaction of eating.

If they're putting on more weight than you think is healthy, do your best to engage in more active play time to help them burn off the extra food ... but also, make sure they're not just eating due to boredom. Keep their environment stimulating, change things around & look for new experiences (sight, sound, smell, physical interaction). Cats need that anyway, so be as creative as you can as much as possible.
>>
>>4668774
>safe for a senior cat to eat kitten food?
It's not great, but shouldn't be too horrible. Kitten food is pretty rich and higher fat content. Maybe you can put his dish down with more appropriate food so he can eat with the other cats, but eat less kitten food ..?

I've had to introduce younger cats to older cats several times, once a 7 month old kitten to a six year old cat. Since I usually have two cats in my house (sometimes three), it's been fairly easy for me to put food down for them in separate dishes and then monitor them and make sure they don't steal (very much) from each other. Usually it's the younger cat I have to keep out of the older cat's food. I gently push them away and explain to them "No. That is not yours." Sometimes I have to pick them up and cuddle them for a bit while the older cat eats in peace. I don't remember it working the other way around, so that's something new.

Keep in mind, if a cat prefers a certain food (like your older cat preferring kitten food), there's the possibility his body is telling him that he needs something from a particular food. Pay attention to that and see if his diet might be a bit out of balance. If he really is senior, like over 13 or 15, there might be some other health issue in play here. Maybe, maybe not. You'll need to up your observational skills and consult a vet if you think you see something really out of balance.

Anyway, if his weight seems stable and he's playing with the younger cats, it's probably not a great concern and is also probably temporary. Until you graduate the kittens to regular food. My last old girl (now gone) used to like kitten food occasionally as something different, even when she was 19 & 20, right up until about six months before she passed. Maybe one small can over two days, and then no kitten food for a week to ten days or more.
>>
>>4668538
What kind of food do they eat? Check out the ingredients, cut down the carbs if necessary, they cause addiction.

>>4668691
I don't use a water fountain, but when I was looking into it I remember that there's the maintenance aspect that can be tricky. Choose one with good and hygienic materials (yes, steel is okay) and easy to clean.
As for the cat tree I bought one years ago made in Germany on a site that wasn't Amazon. My own cats don't use it very often, but I had rescue cats who loved playing on it, it is a bit wobbly only when they run and jump.

>>4668720
Try to hear the opinion of multiple vets about it.
I personally don't have experience with that.

>>4668817
They become more tame generally.
I've taught one of my cats certain words that he associates with food and toys, but not actual commands.

How do I trim my cat's nails? No matter how I approach it she just ends up swiping at me with her sharp as shit claws and my hands end up looking like a Junji Ito monster.
>>
>>4668934
You don't. Buy or make a scratching post instead.
>>
>>4668934
I think you want to try and get your cat used to having her paws touched first before you get all invasive with a nail clipper. Like whenever you're holding or petting your cat you should just try prodding or gently grabbing her paws to see how she reacts until she gets used to it. I think the biggest problem with cats not liking their claws trimmed is that having their paws touched like that is weird for them.

If you think she's calm enough about having her paws touched to try clipping her claws, then it's also fine to just do like one claw at a time and then let her go for a bit if she immediately starts fighting to get away from you, I think the cat will get used to it better if you just let her get away when she doesn't want it than to force her to sit still for the entire session.

That's basically how I went about getting my cat to let me trim his claws, although with him it's not so much that he's feisty as much as he's really squirmy and doesn't like being held even though he's calm otherwise, so I don't know how well it'll work for other cats.

Also I don't even bother with the back claws, that's a two-person job no matter how you go about it.
>>
>>4668934
try only attempting to trim them when she's comfortable, preferably sleepy, and letting you hold and mess with her paws without pulling them away
if she's already associated the nail trimmer with bad things or never lets you touch her paws, give up and try again next time you get a kitten
>>
A random cat off the street is less fearful of my dog than my cat who's been around my dog since 8 weeks. She still goes out of her way to attack him. Why does she have to be so high strung? Why can't she be more chill?

why do cats have their junk so close to their buttholes compared to dogs?
>>
>>4669040
Its genetics. Outdoor cat FAGGOTRY has essentially disrupted and delayed the domestication process of cats so they run the gamut between dingos and huskies. Less domestic just means more fearful to the point they are unable to learn new things.

What everyone else is saying: you need to acclimate her to letting you (and other people) gently play with & manipulate her paws. Cats generally hate that. I started my cats (when possible) when they were young kittens, and certainly the first day they move in with me. During play I always touch & manipulate their paws. I teach them how to use their pads & toes instead of their claws, especially for play. As they get comfortable with it, I gently massage their paws & entire lower legs.

Emphasis on gently; any manipulation of their tendons & musculature for their feet is really weird for them and takes enormous amounts of trust. I also very gently squeeze their paws a small amount to force them to extend their claws, sometimes I hook the tip of my finger beneath one claw at a time and tug on it a bit to stretch it & the tendons that operate them. I also hook my finger under their toes & stretch them out a little ... this teaches them the difference between using their toes and their claws. It can be a fun little game where I try to keep my finger tip under their toe/claw, and they try to get "untangled" from my finger.

The bottom line is, before attempting to invasively clip their claws, I've already spent months and years building trust during playtime (and comfy petting sessions) that I will manipulate their paws, and that it actually feels good. Also, make sure you understand how to trim a cat's claws. Be certain you're not clipping too aggressively and causing them pain. You're going to need to google that up and find instructions & videos because trying to explain all of it here would take several posts. Since your cat has & uses several scratching posts, you can get away with the bare minimum for any trimming. Normal scratching behavior will take care of the rest, so don't feel you have to "correct" everything in one aggressive go at it. You can do it several times, and you can use sandpaper or an emory board to file/sand small corrections.

>she's a stray i adopted a couple months ago
Good on you, lad. You've chosen a difficult task and relationship. There will be disappointments along the way, but it's amazing she found herself a forever home. This is a process, not an instantaneous achievement unlocked. Slow and steady over the years. The fact that she's willing & ready to be petted is such a huge first step.

I've had a couple strays that were similar. I would pick them up when they came to me for attention, but carefully place my right hand under their chest and then scoop under their feet with my left hand & arm ... BEFORE lifting. If you lift first with one hand under their chest/belly, it's uncomfortable for them. This way they end up resting on my left arm with my right arm forming a secure barrier so they can't fall, and my right hand petting & scritching their chin r ears or whatever they like.

I do not attempt to keep them in my arms. They can jump down at any moment without any attempt by me to stop them. I also encourage them to climb my arm up onto my shoulder. They remain in control, which builds trust. They jump down immediately and get pets & scritches from there. After a few times they take longer to jump down as they realize it's a good thing, and they get an interesting, elevated perspective on the world. For ferals I took care of, this happened a lot as I showed up with food ... so the whole relaxed feeding time and their comfort with me being there every day for months & years was certainly a big factor. So maybe try just before feeding time and the food acts as a reward for a few moments of intimacy, and the behavior ritual then later translates to non-food times.

Slow & steady process. Months & years of patience.

Hey so my outdoor cat has had a couple run ins with another cat over the last few days. He was nowhere to be found for like 16 hours and just came around, but he’s very tense. I can pet him and pick him up, but he won’t look at me, doesn’t pur, won’t even sniff meat, tail is flying all over the place and he’s paranoid. Is there anything I can do to calm him down, and what do I do about the other cat?

My cat is currently 15.6 lbs. We’ve been trying to get both our cats to lose weight, pic related has been eating a 1/2 cup of Hill’s Prescription Diet Urinary Care dry food since May, and has not lost any weight. The vet’s called him a little chubby, but I do want him to lose a few pounds. He has anxiety-related FLUTD at 2 years old, and I feel like the weight loss will improve his quality of life.
>>
>>4669913
I believe wet food is the key to weight loss for kitties. I have mine on Royal Canin Urinary SO one 5 oz can a day and sometimes a few treats. Yours doesn't look nearly as fat as most cats I meet, like you said just a bit chubby. I know so many people who's cats are just straight up round. Cats should be slinky, squishy, and floppy not dense and round like a furry orange with legs. It seems like most male cats have to be on the urinary diet after getting fat because it messes with their health so badly.

My cat is still sperging out over this outdoor cat that keeps visiting, and it's to the point where he tore a hole in the kitchen window's screen trying to get out and after him when he saw him the other day, so now we can't leave windows open for him.

I still opened one a crack today just to get some fresh air and he stretched up to the window to wedge his face into the hole to try and sniff outside, this dude is obsessed.
>>
>>4670033
The carb content of dry food is still gonna make your cat fat. I've done the dry food + water thing and even on very little food he didn't lose weight. Wet food is better for cat's health in general.
>>
>>4670018
He’s about 22 inches long from head to rear end, not including tail. It might be unusual but he absolutely hates wet food, he prefers dry food. I’ve tried giving him Fancy Feast seafood wet food, and the vet gave him the wet food version of that prescription diet, but at most, he would eat half of the 2.5 oz can. Should I just starve him out like you would a kid who’s picky?

Our other cat would adapt to a wet food diet without issue, he’s a black void when it comes to food, he’s eating the dry food of Hill’s Science Diet, Perfect Weight. They used to eat Purina One Indoor Advantage, for reference.

why is this cat seething in every single video? is the owner abusive or something?

Because it's a caracal. It's a cat in the same way a mountain lion or a cougar is. Not sure why it's always pissed, but I imagine a wild animal in your home isn't gonna be the friendliest. Regular housecats get pretty savage but are tiny enough to not be much harm. These kinds of "cats" are even more wild.

You should start calculating its food and stop free-feeding it, as after the neutering the metabolism slows down a bit.

I’ve got my own apartment now and I want to get a cat. If I get a cat that’s a couple of years old what training will I need to do with it? And how often do they scratch you
>>
>>4670423
What do you mean training? Cats naturally use a litter box. If it misbehaves by scratching stuff or getting onto places you don't want then you have to train it not to do that. If you mean tricks then it's mostly the same as behaviour, positive reinforcement works best. As for you getting scratched, if you don't annoy or upset it on purpose then it should never happen.
>>
>>4670443
Ok that’s good they naturally use the litter box. If it scratches my couch instead of the scratching post how do I get it to stop? Give treats if it uses the post? What do cats usually not like
>>
>>4670448
They're almost always prefer the scratching post if available. If not, try a bit of catnip around the post

And you can also get bitter spray for the side of your couch if needed
>>
>>4670456
What else do I need to know? I’ve never had a cat before or even interacted with one. I just want one to keep me company and it won’t be sad being alone for 8 hours a day
>>
>>4670448
You could move the post next to the couch or make the couch unappealing with bitter spray as other anon said, or aluminum foil which cats sometimes don't like. Treats when using post is also good, though you basically have to do it right away or cats won't make the association.

As for what cats don't like, lots of stuff kek but it should be mostly common sense. Loud noises, sudden/aggressive movement, being touched too aggressively or in spots they don't like (paws, legs, tail, stomach). The only times I get scratched is when I willingly annoy him or pet his tummy (I can't help it), or trying to trim his claws.

Over the last few days, she's stopped eating and is avoiding my attention more and more, showing no interest in playing. Is this a delayed form of moving stress? Is it separation anxiety from me being gone at work all day? Is it as simple as she doesn't like her food?

My eccentric asshole uncle bought a serval. He paid some absurd amount like $10k, plus the cost of its all meat diet. But that was nothing compared to the legal fees. The province told him he couldn't keep what they considered a wild animal as a pet, so he fought them in court. The problem ended up solving itself because it choked to death after just a few years. Which was putting it out of its misery, since it was declawed, confined in a house and totally feral.

So yeah, exotic pet owners are all compensating for something and/or seeking attention with no concern for animal welfare.

There are a plethora of videos showing a variety of cats, from pumas to tigers, not acting even remotely close to this being handled by people.
This is NOT normal "tamed" caracol behavior.
You have to have fucked up real bad for a hand-raised wild feline to constantly act this way towards you all the fucking time.

ESL here, sorry for any grammatical errors: I have two questions:
1. Two weeks ago my 4-year-old cat almost died from poisoning or something he ate and the vet saved him. Two days later he had the same symptoms again (rapid breathing and looked really sad, not eating anything) and I saved him again with a couple of injections. Since then he has been sleepy all the time and sleeps much more than before, in addition to drinking a lot of water (although he had been doing this for about a month). What's going on? Is it a consequence of the medications? The cat doesn't look sad but a kind of drowsy.
>>
>>4671016
2. How can I catch a kitten of approximately 1 month old that lives on the street? He screams all the time and I have fed him but he hides in a building that is inaccessible to me, there is a lot of wood and a thousand places where he can hide. I don't want to hurt him and I need an easy trap to build. I probably won't be able to thank you for the next few days, but I'll be back. Thank you
>>
>>4671016
Not sure what could be, if a consequence of the poisoning or if the poison still not completely removed from inside his body.
I'd take him to the vet one more time.

>>4671017
If you cannot buy an actual cat trap use a cat carrier with wet food inside to attract him, with kittens it's much easier and faster to gain their trust. Make a trail with the food from his nest to the cage. When he's fully inside you slam the door shut.
If possible, take 1 - 2 days to only feed him and get him used to the cat carrier. The more comfortable he is inside the cage the better. You never know with cats, they will run outside in a millisecond for the faintest weird noise.
>>
>>4670821
Yeah it could be delayed stress. Have you ruled out medical conditions? Was she visited by a vet before/after you adopted her?

Eternal vigilance. You need to intervene as soon as the cat starts. Don't be all drama and screaming about it, the cat won't get it. Be firm, talk to him like a person, gently place his paws on an appropriate scratching surface. There are several actions you can take, use every tool in your kit. Reward with attention & treats when they are doing it right.

Keep a spray bottle & water gun handy, loaded with a VERY WEAK vinegar solution. Something like half a teaspoon in a pint (or even a quart) of water. Even if it doesn't smell powerful to you, it does to cats. Do NOT spray the cat with this solution! That's just cruelty. Don't. Keep separate water spray devices loaded with pure water when you think you need to shoot the cat directly.

When a cat is scratching, they are leaving scent marks from glands in their paws. When you notice a place they are scratching, spray the vinegar solution over top (until liberally damp) of the area they are scratching. The vinegar covers their own scent and makes the spot much, much less attractive. If they attempt to scratch it, they get vinegar on their paws & it's VERY annoying. Works best if you interrupt them when they are doing it so they observe the whole process, but the effect lingers long enough that a treated spot lasts at least a day or two if not a week. They rarely come back and, even then, it'll usually be only 2 or 3 times at most until they get the message. Your solution should be so weak that you can't smell it 15 or 30 minutes later, but the cat will.

Put several different types of scratching pads & posts around the place. Observe which ones he uses & likes, make sure there are always a few choices in different places. A vertical post should be about three feet high and firmly in place so a cat can really stretch out and reach for the top. I've used sections of tree trunks before, which can look really cool as decorations.

For the first ~2 years just feed normally. Observe how much he eats in one sitting when he is actually hungry (not bored), which often means a cat will eat, walk away for 10-15 minutes, then come back & eat some more. Total amount eaten in that time is "one meal." Two meals like that per day, with small treats occasionally (not daily) in between. As the kitten grows, it will eat larger meals, so recalibrate every month until about 14-16 months old.

If you don't let the cat decide to come back for "seconds" & you take the extra food away, you will teach the cat he has food insecurity and he will get in the habit of overeating. Give him a full half hour to eat as much as he wants in one session before taking the food away. You can still keep a small dish of dry food out to snack on (like, 1/4 cup to get to the next feeding time).

Keep the cat active as much as possible for the first 2 to 3 years. If he starts to become overweight you can dial back the portions a little bit at a time, but most cats will find their natural weight in this time and stick near it unless some other stress factor or boredom makes them overeat. An active cat can eat a healthy amount of food daily until they are about 5 or a bit older.

Pay attention to your cat's activity & always look for methods to keep it at high levels. All of my cats have made it to about 13-15 years & can still leap up above my waist height, usually to kitchen countertop height, if they are motivated by toys or food. About that age it becomes too difficult, and it's too dangerous for them to land from that height due to injuries they can get from old bones & tendons (especially if they're overweight). But, you can use that as one measure of their activity capacity. If your cat is too fat & lazy to leap that high, time to investigate and take action to correct it. Increased activity is preferred over starvation, and you can look for healthy, low calorie foods so he can still eat enough to feel satisfied.

If anything, the picture just shows how much the cat loves him. Cats almost never let humans touch their bellies unless they really trust them. This picture is really cute honestly. I don't get why you're so upset
>>
I just rescued two cats that were badly neglected. Their previous owner kept them locked away in crates at all times and they basically lived in their own filth. She'd squeeze their paws to upset them and make them meow. It was pretty bad.

Miraculously they are healthy and I've bathed them so they are clean. I have a litterbox and food and water bowls set up for them to use.

The only thing is they have been hiding from me. One just stays under my couch and the other hides in my cabinet. They are using the litter box and eating but I barely see them. Can I do anything to help them trust me? I'm trying to give them space and just keep filling their bowl when I see it's empty.

>Can I do anything to help them trust me?
Lots of love. And, lots of time. They basically have PTSD from what you describe. Not even being superlative about it: they really have real PTSD from that sort of treatment. They will never be "right" in the head. But, eventually, they will adjust to the fact that the world isn't an actual living Hell. All the time.

Do your best to try and get them to play. It's going to be tough, because it sounds like they never have. The concept of play may not even be part of their vocabulary, so you are going to have to teach them. When petting/touching/brushing/any direct interaction with them, you will have to learn to disengage and give them space at the slightest hint that they can't take your affection at any given moment. Anything you do to try and force a situation ... even when it's necessary to do so ... is going to undermine any trust that you are building with them.

I rescued a feral kitten with a broken leg once. For five years he was terrified of absolutely everyone & everything. One day he just seemed to break from exhaustion and fell asleep next to me. He was so out I gently picked him up and placed him in my lap, talking & stroking him gently. When he woke, still in my lap a couple of hours later, something seemed to have healed a little bit and he became my cat, almost exclusively. One of the most loving cats I've ever known, absolutely as vulnerable & fragile as a kitten until he passed at the age of 20. But he hid from just about everyone & everything all his life, other than me. Whenever he slept, he passed out from exhaustion from being terrified of everything all the time.

Jesus fucking Christ ... I can't even begin to describe what I would do to that festering cunt. Hopefully she just dies painfully for several years from anal cancer, or we get lucky and she gets something even worse. What you describe is sociopathic "abuse," not "neglect."

Do your best, anon. You are their only hope.
>>
>>4672296
You've got a real family problem there. I would deal with it (in my own family) by kidnapping all the cats and saving them. Whatever I needed to do to get them all healthy & fixed, then adopted out if I couldn't keep them.

That will not stop them from starting over with new cats. The base problem here is that they refuse to spay & neuter. And, frankly, I consider that a red flag to ban anyone from having any acts. Unfortunately, we live in a society where animal cruelty is encouraged through our laws (and mostly the lack thereof).

Contact shelters & feline rescue organizations. Describe the situation and discuss what you might be able to do. Maybe there are local ordinances that can be used to prevent these people from owning pets anymore. If you can't afford to spay & neuter, you can't afford to be a responsible pet owner i any other capacity.

I've been around long enough that I don't tolerate this sort of shit from anyone in my family. Nobody. My own parents know that I'd lose my shit on them for behaving like this, and boy fucking would I. How you deal with your own family is your problem, but his is trailer park trash tier behavior. You might have to grow a pair and tell them all off, hard. At this point, they are just choosing to be cruel and stupid. Decide how much of that you can take from them.

/kot/ I need help.

I adopted a kitten 2 months ago and she's been living with me since them. What I didn't notice until yesterday is that she had fleas, I think she always had them and I never noticed since my apartment should be free of those as I have no other pets and the cat doesn't really go out.

I will take the kitty to the vet, but how do I take care of the house? Vacuum cleaners are not common and extremely expensive in the shithole where I live, and every internet article just mentions those when talking about cleaning the house. Any help is appreciated, as these these pests trigger my OCD and I can't even sleep anymore.
>>
>>4672198
god bless you anon ;_;
>>
>>4672359
First off: wash everything and use anti flea products on the cat.

Wash your cat's bedding, your own bedding, and any other linens your cat frequently comes into contact with. Use hot water and a strong detergent to kill fleas and their eggs.

You can comb your cat regularly every day with a fine-toothed flea comb. It'll help to remove adult fleas and their eggs from your cat's fur.

There are also repellents and DIY flea traps; I don't know if they work but here's what I found:
>place a dish of soapy water under a nightlight. Fleas are attracted to the light and will jump into the soapy water, drowning them.

If you think your house might be infested, call a professional.

>>4672346
Just wash the plate once she's done eating? Is it that hard? I too don't like the smell of leftovers, I keep the bowls clean and wash them like twice a day.
>>
>>4668523
you misspelt "based" retard
>>
>>4672359
I mean a vacuum is going to be pretty important ESPECIALLY if you have carpet.
But fleas are a real nightmare to get rid of once you're place is infested. They'll jump off into the carpet, furniture, bedding, etc and lay eggs. So even if you got rid of all the living ones, there's a generation ready to go next.
I know I had the problem once and the way we got rid of it was using special flea powder for your carpet and uphostry, and dusting the house and vacuuming it multiple times a week for a month.
Wash everything cloth you have in hot water and dry on high heat, and keep cycling everything through until the problem is handled.
Big bombs don't always work because they only affect things on the surface, and doesn't get into carpet and upholstry.
I'd suggest getting your cat on some flea medication, getting the greasy shit you apply to the back of their neck, and maybe even a flea collar.
Basically you've got a long uphill fight against an enemy that can bounce back quickly from being 99% wiped out.
Sorry anon, it sucks. See if you can't get an exterminator out there.
You could also try putting some borax powder out, its a common thing added to detergents and cleaning powders, but it also prevents insects from creating chitin.

picked up a stray kitten off the street that was meowing over and over just over a week ago. it was meowing incessantly when I was headed into a store so I told myself if it was still crying when I was finished shopping I would investigate. it was, so I searched for the sound's source and this kitty was hiding inside of a hedge with no sign of any other cat. it came right up to me and seemed desperate, let me pick it up and carry it across a crosswalk back to my place. it's been weirdly friendly since all things considered. took it to a vet, got it checked out. now a 16 week old kitten, unfixed male. every time I go back to the place where I found him I see no evidence of any other cat. half of his whiskers look like they got chopped off halfway down. the thing is that he doesn't act feral and barely even a stray, he's so friendly. yet, he was obviously very, very hungry when I found him.
he seems to recognize the scent of pizza and toast and appears to want to eat those things (other household member's diet choices) but I don't allow him any bad foods. I've been feeding him organic chicken, one organic chicken liver, salmon, tuna, sardines, organic beef, Reveal brand chicken and chicken-duck cat food, organic human baby turkey food (it is Thanksgiving after all), and I've been mixing in organic plain pumpkin puree into his meat/fish after looking up online that pumpkin can help with watery stools. that has, and his stools keep improving. he eats up his food without issue.
I've had cats before (though they were more my family's) but I've never raised a kitten or fully taken care of a cat before. my family did not take very good care of their animals, and fed them garbage tier "food."

the vet asked me what I've been feeding him, listened to my answer then the vet told me I should be feeding him kitten food, and handed me a list of brands. I looked through all the brands' websites, their ingredients lists and they were all kitten goyslop.
continuing in next post.
>>
>>4672516
it was mostly dry kibble style foods, with less than stellar ingredients: "flavor," s.0.y., gluten, corn, gumming agents, not much actual animal proteins or fats. why did the vet recommend non-nourishing food and why recommend dry food when I have learned online that cats do much better with wet or bloody foods? what the fuck? besides the kitten oriented supplements/minerals/vitamins they add inside I don't understand.
I ordered pic related for my little friend since I figured he could use the additional vitamins/minerals/supplements but I had to really seek out canned kitten food without stupid fillers or additives.
>ingredients: chicken, salmon, chicken liver, whole sardine, chicken bone broth, fish bone broth, chicken heart, egg, tuna oil, taurine, salt, vitamins [vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate, niacin, vitamin A supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex], minerals [potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, zinc amino acid chelate, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, manganese amino acid chelate, sodium selenite, potassium iodide], choline chloride.

>ORIJEN® Chicken & Salmon Entrée in Bone Broth Kitten Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for growth.
I'm planning on feeding him tins of this kitten food mixed with more organic pumpkin puree and crunchy freeze dried animal organs such as chicken heart bits and venison lung bits. is this decent?

what does everyone here feed their cats? why are modern doctors for both humans and animals fucking retarded when it comes to diet? why should an obligate carnivore eat carbohydrate?

From my own experience, vets do not have a deep knowledge on cat food, or they do but suggest you easily available brands for practical reason. Be it because brands pay them to promote their food, be it because they have to pander to pet owners that don't want to waste time searching/cooking the perfect food nutrients-wise and want easy and quick solutions.
For that you should hear an animal nutritionist. I was thinking on asking one for a consultation for a problem with my cat's sensitive digestive system after an infection, but they are all overpriced faggots.
However yes, however garbage commercial cat food is, it also comes with the complete set of additional nutrients a cat need that a homemade diet cannot guarantee, unless you decide to also spend on supplements and whatnot.
Have you ever heard of BARF? It is mostly used for dogs, but it's a feeding method can be applied on cats too.

>>4672860
That's more or less the same situation I have with my cat. I have finally found two brands of food he doesn't reject, but he's not enthusiastic. Also the new kibbles I'm alternating the wet food with (he's fussy with soft food too) were well received in the first few days, he now ignores them to eat the other cat's dry food which is less tasty.
What helps me in the hard times is freeze-dried chicken by Cosma, a snack that you can crush into powder mixing it to soft/wet food and with my cats it works. It's tiring but it's a trick I use when my patience is at its limit.
>>
>>4673043
that is flipping brilliant then. ridiculous. diet is the foundation of health (besides genetics). I've been noticing my little friend doesn't even go for water despite me setting out water and changing it out for fresh water each day. he eats the wet foods I give him and is urinating I think a good amount. since cats don't bother lapping at outright water unless they're stuck on kibble that means the more wet/bloody their food is the better - so vets recommending dry kibble with tons of filler is insanity.
I did come across the BARF diet as I have been researching how to take care of this kitten. at minimum I will apply a fraction of that - I want to test out giving him freeze dried chicken hearts and things such as that. if cats enjoy crunch in their food he can get that from dried organs, not kibble.

If I'm lucky, I get to trim 1-2 nail a week because the timing and circumstances have to be perfect. Towel wrap trick is a no go. A restraint bag or whatever wouldn't work either. I'm thinking cat melatonin treats or something edible to make her sedated a bit. Even if I could trim 3 nails in a session, I'd call that a major success, so I don't need her to be passed out or anything.

Carefully. Their bones are fragile and it's easy to break things if they are struggling. You need zero or no nearly no soap on their faces, don't get it in their eyes. Teach them they WILL get their ears cleaned with Q-tips ... VERY gently. Handle with extreme care, you are far stronger than you imagine. Talk to them, calmly and constantly. Let them know this is entirely normal, explain what you are doing and why, nothing to be afraid of, and maybe even something that can be enjoyable. Training a kitten to enjoy bathtime pays huge dividends later on. When they are a cat it helps immensely if they have trust in humans to handle them intimately for all sorts of maintenance and emergencies.

ausfags, what wet and dry food do you use? I am going to switch to adult food and have been using Felix for wet food but apparently its not very good. I looked at the OP and other brand recommendations but they are all really expensive or hard to get.

cats are autistic, they can only handle new things if you do them very gradually, and they have sensitive paws so they dont really like getting fucked with there in general. with that in mind, fuck with her paws a little bit when you're giving her attention, and then give her treats. Every time you do it fuck with her paws a little more, and then eventually she'll be fine with it.
>>
>>4674173
Will they share the same spaces? Introduce them gradually. Your cat isn't going to be happy to see its territory being invaded by another cat. Collaborate with the owner if possible.

Does anyone else's kot growl at everything? I adopted mine from a shelter a bit over a year ago and he's very affectionate but I've noticed he growls a lot, if I pick him up after 2-3 seconds he starts to growl but he takes a really long time before he lets me know he actually wants down (sometimes I'll like try to put him down and he'll actually cling to me while still growling) and if he puts his claws out or anything like that I immediately set him down, same thing at night, I'll pick him up and put him under a blanket and he'll growl at me then after a few minutes he'll just get on top of the blanket and be purring, he also growls at people out the window and when someone knocks on the door, it seems to just be something he does so I'm not worried about it at all since he's never scratched or bit me more just wondering if it's some sort of specific breed thing or if he's just a weirdo from being raised in a shelter

Look at me cat bros, witness her
She passed away yesterday, ~12 years old, fuck knows what happened, a few days and she's done, no good vet clinic here to diagnose or treat, local vet assumed pancreatitis
My family had two siamese cats since 2000 who after 10 years made her, and then 6 years ago she made a lil guy who didn't live past 1.5 years
Hoped she'd live at least three years more

Cat vocalizations vary a lot by individual. He may have just learned to use his growl the way other cats use meows.

Well we both have 10 acre plots but cats get around. I assume it will be an outdoor cat like mine, just found out about it from a facebook post. It seems like everything I can find online is “huh, why would they be dangerous??”. I know scuffles will happen and they behave like normal cats, but is that his thing going to be roaming around and killing every cat and dog in the neighborhood when it grows up?

Do some cats shed worse than others? Prospective first time owner here, have been looking into getting a ragdoll but have seen people complain that they shed profusely. From limited research I’d thought their lack of an undercoat would mean less shedding, but some people I’ve seen have anecdotally said their ragdoll sheds much more than previous cats of theirs. Would getting a domestic shorthair mean less shedding? I know that shedding comes with getting a cat of course and I’m prepared for it, but I’m wondering if any anons have any advice as to what to expect with shorthair vs. longhair breeds and just experiences with shedding in general. Anyone in here having experience with a ragdoll vs domestic shorthairs would be much appreciated as well.

hey /kot/
I got a bonded pair of kots recently (6 month old sisters, "bonded pair" according to shelter) and I wanted to muse.

So I got cat 1 nov. 4th, and cat 2 I got friday after her Ringworm treatment ended. Cat 1 was very very shy and scared, but not mean. She would go limp and run, but never hiss and bite. I could pick her up if she was trapped if need be, but tried to avoid that and respect her space till she opened up naturally. With care she's become very playful and comfortable being relagated to me and my partner's bedroom (we're keeping them both in here until they're both bonded with us to the point they approach for pets without jumping when we reach out etc.)

cat 1 does jump on bed and cuddle at night when partner is asleep and im chillin, on her own which is mad cute (pic rel :3c)

anyway, her sis (cat 2) was much quicker to warm up, but her behavior is different. She isn't as comfy with us I assume, but doesnt hide, and already plays with toys unlike her sis. they seem pretty close in comfort. already, with idiosyncracies. she does get in spats with sis tho, and i just split it up and play with them both to get zoomies out. I assume that's good. She does already use the same litterbox as sis so I also assume that's a sign she's comfy with and remembers sis despite their time apart while cat 2 was on treatment and couldnt come home.

the one curious behavior is when I pet her sis in the cat tree hammock/basket:
>its super tall and goes to ceiling, cat 1 sleeps cozily at very top and likes being aoproached for pets when shes up there above me.
>I approach and give her pets and skriches for while, she purs abd geta cozy
>sis notices this and gets orneary
>hops on lower rung and looks up at me, does a hiss like vocalization, but it doesn't seem mean (I can tell, Ive had cats, and had a cat before who only hissed due to messed up meowbox, reminds me of that but im unsure)
>she paces too, I assume its out of concern for sis, but she seems nice- curious

cont.
>cat 2 DOES meow, as friday when we got her, she was meowing and wandering in confusion in her new environment trying to get out/understand it
>has since stopped and gotten comfy, but I havent heard much meowing more
worried she's sick since she's doing this hoarse his thing while looking up at me and meowing less, but she doesnt seem it at all. Also thinking maybe she's been fighting with sis when im out to dinner or sleeping deeply and cant notice, but doesnt seem likely? idk
just weird she's not meowing but it's not aggro + the behavior its in response to from me. wonder if anyone has insight. worried she dmged herself or something and a bit paranoid.
also got schizo thinking its the litter idk or a bone she ate in food.

we've been giving them low ingredient raw stuff for wet food (reveal) and merrick's kibble
the cat food's been real good, but I did see a descecated fishbone in the "ocean fish" mackeral and tuna can, in cat 2's bowl she avoided eating. worried she ate a smaller one or something. might avoid those cans in future bc the others are good.

lastly I have a question about litterboxes
i got the petsafe self cleaning box and they both use it, but idk how I feel about crystal litter. any reccomendations? i like the cleaning and they both use the box. would sand be good? clay work with it?

lmk what you niggas think on this and thanks

Not domestic shorthair, but I owned an oriental shorthair and he always shed like motherfucker. Get a hairless breed (Peterbald, sphynx, donskoy) if you're that worried about shedding and keeping up with brushing/de-shedding/vacuuming.

what I've been doing to get my kitties more comfortable is keep them in my room. I've used plushies and other shit to Block off no-go zones like under the bed or corners they'd stick to, and keep closets closed. Mame it so that they can't hide, but provide them a "room" or personal zone (more on that later) I have everything in here, food, water, box, cat bed and toys, treats etc.

also, just for added personal space and comfort, I bought the pen partially pictured here in top left >>4675535
This I got so they have a pseudo personal space if they need it. 30 bucks for a decent size on amazon. First cat needed it more bc she was super shy, and I adopted this strategy to help her. Still working on it, but she's pretty damn cozy now it's night and day. Her sis has had it easier. It will take time, patience, play, respect, and treats, but she will get better and more used to you in time I believe.
good luck anon

Does she look too skinny? I'm taking her to the vet in a couple of days for a general checkup.
>>
>>4675804
Looks like a healthy weight.
The trick to knowing if a cat is the right weight is to make sure they have hips (the body puckers in slightly after the rib cage). If its flat, or curving outwards your cat is too chubby.
Also feel the ribs, they should feel similar to the back of your hand with how much meat should be over the ribs. If its like feeling your knuckles the cat is too skinny, if you can't feel the ribs your cat is officially a fatass.
>>
>>4675683
That's weird, typically animals hate the smell of coffee to the point that an easy way to keep them out of your garden is to spread used coffee grounds around the area.
Either way caffeine is pretty toxic to cats.

I can feel the ribs, but i do feel a layer of skin/fat on top. Definetely doesn't feel like hard bone or my knuckles.
>>
>>4675825
Looks fine to me.
Funny enough my last cat ended up getting really fat, mostly because he was on special food that made him retain a lot of water, but he was also a big fatboi.
My current cat I wanted to be very conscious of his weight because its really hard to get it off a cat (they're not great at the kind of exercise that burns a lot of fat, and its really hard on their kidneys and liver because cats exist to survive on a pure protein diet and they rarely have the luxury of a calorie surplus).
So I try really hard to feed him the proper amounts, and he's the skinniest cat I've ever had, but he's also fucking huge.
When I took him to the vet for his first checkup since he was a kitten even the vet said holy shit when she put him on the scale and he's 16lbs.
He has really short fur so he doesn't look big, but he's fucking huge. He likes to lay between my legs when I laying down and I realized his body is about as long as me leg, and I'm over 6ft tall.
When he stands up against the cabinets in the kitchen he can peek over the counter so the usual portion to weight ratio doesn't apply to him.
>>
>>4675822
I'm aware. I try to keep him out and I'm always sure to clean up coffee spills and grounds. He just seems to gravitate towards it a lot and I thought that he would love to have a coffee treat that he can eat.

No clue what was wrong with her. I've gone into a different room and shut the door to give her some space, but this was really weird behaviour for her. I had the tap running hot filling the sink while I was dishing up her food, I wonder if she burned herself accidentally while I wasn't looking?

Continue to do so. If possible let them visit those off limits areas once under your supervision to satisfy their curiosity.
Do they have toys and a cat tree to entertain themselves with?
Pick an area of the house to use for your playing session with them, they will grow up knowing that said part of the house is for partying.

I need some advice guys, so I live in a one bedroom with two cats. There's a couple of street that's whose owner passed away I heard a few years ago, that I feed and they have seemed to have gotten used to street life. They use my patio/property as a save space. Lately they have been sleeping in front of my door/porch. I'm unsure how to proceed. If I didn't have two cats I'd have baited them in already.
>>
>>4676923
You need help. Four cats in one bedroom is cruelty. You need friends to help you find people to network & find a home. Do everything you can to handle & care for them, make certain they need & trust human interaction. It's their only serious chance of a new home. Their personalities & ages will be very important, and try to keep them together. Sounds like they might be siblings or a mother-child, so don't split them up so long as they are happy with each other. Even if you can find someone who will host them for a few weeks or a month or two, every little bit helps.

Search for feline rescue organizations near you. Tell them you have two abandoned housecats who need a home. Describe your situation, offer to help as much as you can. There may be several rescue and no-kill organizations around you, for cats and for all abandoned animals. Each one you contact, ask them for help contacting others ... the community tends to network as best they can depending on the local area.

These cats you're describing have a solid chance right now of being highly adoptable because they are already well adjusted to human contact. The longer they're out of a house, the more their behavior can change into something that's troublesome. If they get along with your cats, BTW, that can be a huge socialization bonus that will help them find a forever home. Carefully check into that and see if your cats & these guys can all tolerate each other & get along.

Okay wait hold up toovclarify. It's not just one room. But also I haven't brought them inside. That was my concern so I've kept them separated from my cats . I just feed them and have like a small outdoor shelter with warming pads for them. I may go talk to some cat rescue groups near me now see if they know how to safely catch them and keep them together.

what am i missing here? arent cats usually very actively sniffing a hand in front of them? if he liked me he would bunt me or rub against me, but he doesnt. what gives? is it just his personality? is he just a laid back cat that doesnt want trouble and maybe just looking to be fed

Ever since getting a roommate my cat keeps shitting and peeing in my room and he doesn't go downstairs to eat unless I am there with him, what do?
I bought a waterproof bedsheet that I put under my acual bedding so that the pee doesn't go into my mattress, but that's just a placeholder until the issue gets sorted. Do I just lock him in the downstairs area until he realises he won't die if someone else (except me) is there?
He is scared of men due to past trauma (picked him up from the streets and the vet said he had healed blunt force trauma signs on his legs and he runs away from men, so that's my theory) but having to clean up after him multiple times a week is getting ridiculous.
I tried being nice and calming him down after he did it and hid, that didn't work. Now I've just started thowing him out in the garden for a couple of hours but it's not going through. When I do see him use the litterbox I use positive reinforcement but it doesn't look like it's working.

>Ever since getting a roommate my cat keeps shitting and peeing in my room and he doesn't go downstairs to eat unless I am there with him, what do?
Sounds like your cat has had some experiences with your roommate. Watch very, very carefully for that. I had a roommate once who would use his feet to kick my cat out of the way, and he was a whole lot of not gentle about it. Fortunately, I was the leaseholder for the place and he was a sublet through me (by arrangement with the property owner, I was effectively a live-in property manager). I was coming home from work one night and caught him shouting at my cat and trying to kick it him because it was Summer and I saw the whole shitshow go down through the kitchen window. I walked into the house, picked up the phone and called 911, then served him an immediate eviction notice when the cops arrived. He was escorted off the property, and you bet your ass I was in the courtroom and provided testimony to the judge, and received a permanent trespass order against the guy, forfeiture of his security deposit, plus an order to pay 60 days' rent and utilities for violating the conditions of his lease. Later I waived the 60 days' rent, but the guy did move to another state quite soon after that.

Now, all that said, it COULD be just speculation and does not apply to your situation. But, keep it in mind. Even if your roommate "only" just shouts & yells at your cat, it's still abuse, especially given your cat's background. IF that is happening, stop it immediately or your cat will never have a chance at a normal life again.

The multiple litterbox idea >>4677381 >>4677385 is obvious and should definitely be tried. I've always used the largest, uncovered litterboxes I can find, even improvised them out of large, flat storage containers (for like $5 at Walmart). Every morning and every night I clean them, sometimes once or twice extra a day if I walk by and they've been used. You're teaching your cat to be hygienic.
>>
>>4677208
>maybe just looking to be fed
Unless you want to adopt him, don't. He looks pretty well-fed and seems clean enough, so he's got a home or some arrangement going on. Try to locate his real home and have a friendly chat with the people there. I've always treated my house like an open door cat house. Any cat that wants to visit is quite welcome, so long as they behave and get along with any other cats (including mine) that are hanging around.

At one point I lived in a McNeighborhood with one cat, but there were about 5 or 7 that were always circulating around. Some would come inside, come wouldn't. Mostly I checked them for health and cleanliness, made sure they just wanted to hang out socially and no fighting was tolerated, and measured their friendliness by petting, playing, and brushing them all, especially when there were several all together. Turned into a really fun mini-circus for several years, and I met some great neighbors. We all more or less treated all the cats as part of our community and they would all visit all of our houses at different times. Two of them would sometimes come in at night and sleep with me and my cat. I'd send an email to their people and let them know their cats were safe & fed and that I'd be kicking them out in the morning when I went to work. It was pretty wonderful, especially when grilling out in the Summer for friends and all the cats would show up to meet & play with everyone. I really miss that.

Thanks for the thorough reply, you sound like a great owner!
My roommate tends to avoid the cat completely from what I've seen, but I will keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Good on you for protecting your cat though, your ex-roommate got what was coming for him.
I clean the litterbox 3-4 times a day (depending on activity) since I have 2 cats, but I will try to see if there's anything else I can do to make going downstairs more appealing.
For now I will create a makeshift litterbox and put it in my room to see if that helps, but ideally I only plan on using it until the anxiety situation gets resolved.

Hey, /an/. I live alone in an apartment and I've been thinking of adopting a cat, but the thing is, I usually go to work everyday, so the cat will end up alone for 6+ hours during some days.
Is it a good idea to get one or will the potential loneliness end up being bad for it?

I've lost all passion for keeping this cat after rescuing it off the street ever since it aimed straight for my eye and nearly partially blinded me with its claw. I was not even doing anything to it, just lying down on the floor next to it. the local pound won't take cats, apparently. I'm willing to continue to get the cat medical care and also get it fixed but I don't want it anymore.

Cats have a big blind spot right under their nose, so when the food is in the corner of the bowl they have a hard time finding it, most cats also don't like their whiskers to his the side of the bowl. If you have a cat that acts like that picture, just move the food back into the middle of the bowl, or consider switching to a saucer thats a little wider with a shallow slope towards the middle.

Okay so it's been about a week and I thought I'd update everyone. Things could not be better! They both came around completely and are behaving how I'd expect healthy cats to behave. The cat in the photo follows me everywhere and paws at my feet. The other is less likes her space but she purrs when held and likes to play sometimes. They cry whenever I leave the room or close a door it's so cute.

Fantastic news, anon. Treasure them. Sounds like they understand their situation has vastly improved. This one in your picrel makes them look pretty young, so hopefully they will bounce back faster and more completely than their treatment suggested. Just keep a careful eye out for "a while." If they show signs of stress or regression, just be sensitive and attentive. You seem to have built up a strong trust relationship quickly, so keep doing whatever it is you're doing to keep reinforcing that.

Thanks for stepping up, anon. Anyone can "adopt" a young kitten, but it takes bravery to give a home and love to abused animals.

The fact that they will be alone most of the day makes it important for their socialization that they have each other for comfort and entertainment. A little bit of extra work, but the reward will be far more than just "double."

Leave lots of toys around. Wine & champagne corks, ping pong balls, strips of T-shirt about 18" long by 2" wide or so will curl up into a soft "ropesnake." Of course you can buy fancier stuff, but I've made it a mission in life to find cheap and free toys, and with unusual textures, shapes, behaviors, and smells. Bringing new things home is great stimulation just for the experiences. The (mostly clean) top of a pizza box is a couple days worth of entertainment just for the texture & smell, and it can be swapped out after a few days for something new.

Good luck!

Kitty tummy trap questions:

Hello, I've been watching someone's cat for 5 months and I have some questions. I've never owned a cat and this is the longest I've ever shared my space with one. I think the cat likes me... we have long petting sessions where he wants me to rub him all over and he smooshes himself all over every available inch of me.

One thing I haven't gotten the hang of yet though is - during these petting sessions - he'll flop over on his back like pic related and close his eyes at me in what I believe is a kitty blink. I *REALLY REALLY* want to rub his belly when he does this. I'll inch my hand close to him verrryyyy slowly.... and when I get close he'll put his claws out and grab my hand. He's never scratched me, ever, and he doesn't scratch me... he gently rests his claws on my incoming hand as if to tell me "that's close enough pal!".. and then he kitty blinks at me.

He does this all the time. I really want to rub his inviting little cat belly because he's a big fucking cutie pie... but I also don't want him to scratch the shit out of me. If he hurts me I'll get mad. Is he going to scratch me if I inch closer?

He's really gentle with me... he open his mouth and puts his teeth on me but never, ever bites me. I really want to rub his belly.
>>
>>4679202
That cat is wearing a bikini lmao. Just go for it.
>>
>>4679202
kek same as other anon, if I went slow I think my cat would just get more suspicious of me, I normally just go for it. He doesn't mind the upper chest as much as the fatty pouch (as he should) though so I can get a couple scratches in there. If he's sleepy and comfy or if I pet him on the head at the same time he'll let me get away with plenty of petting too. My favourite is stuffing my entire face in there, so soft.

/kot/ I'd like some advice, I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with my cat. TLDR at the end.

Adopted a Kitty in early October, she was in a shelter and I went there to adopt a cat so I could have a buddy, I was going to adopt an older cat since I heard they were easier to deal with, but after seeing the kitty that has been rejected by other cats and her cat mom had died, I couldn't help but adopt her.
The problem I've been facing is - Kitty behavior problems, with the main one being biting really hard a lot. The bitings are really out of hand and hurting me a lot, and I end up scaring the cat out back because I end up angry, screaming, and a few other things because it's the only way she will let it go. If she is calm or sleepy she will try to lick my hand first and then bite, lightly. But if she is on zoomies or more active mode she will aim and try to bite it all the time, she will also try to bite my arms and sometimes my legs. I've tried many things, toys, playing, and as much as my sanity allows, being patient - such methods as trying to get her attention elsewhere don't work, she will either focus on biting me or look at it for a second and then start biting again, while also instigating it whenever she can. And I'm starting to lose my cool, and getting angry a lot, and I don't want that - especially for the cat's health behavior.
So, how can I do better? I'm a little desperate. I don't plan on giving her away, but if I see I'm causing more harm than good, I'll do it. I feel like I'm going in that direction with how things are going. Any help is appreciated, I love the cat and I want the relationship to be nice and friendly.

TLDR: Adopted kitty was rejected by other cats and momcat died. I'm retarded but doing my best to learn and provide a safe environment for the kitty to grow and live. Kitty has behavior problems and I'm not answering well and not knowing how to answer better. Biting me really hard and not obeying orders as stubbornness on purpose.

This is one of the consequences of cats growing up without a mom, or not spending enough time with her. A mom teaches her kittens not only the basics such as cleaning themselves and eating solid food, but also to hunt and to play, to control the bite.
If the mom isn't there to teach them "how to cat" you'll have to do it.
Continue to get her attention elsewhere; kittens are curious so bring her new toys, and say a loud "NO" when she bites too hard.
Remember she's young, it's normal to not have a full control of her actions. She will eventually learn to moderate the strenght when playing with you as she grows up and learns from your reactions.

My boy, Mr.Midnight, his jaw has swollen up quite a bit in the past few days. I don’t know what’s wrong with him, but he doesn’t seem to be eating very much and is laying around a lot. He seems to be in a lot of pain. Vets are closed and I’m poor as fuck, what should I do? How do I make my boy well again?

Should also note that he’s a hunter, and has lost some teeth over the years. I know it’s probably a bad gum/tooth infection, but I’m really worried about him eating without pain, and how long he’ll go without food.
>>
>>4680130
Well a vet is your best bet for him honestly. Especially for an infection. But until then the best you can do is offer softer food. Like the can stuff so they don't need to chew so much.

Frog here, why do americans seems terrified by the idea of letting cats go outside compared to the rest of the world (or at least Europe) ?

also here's my fatty.
>>
>>4680235
Because the american and australian environment aren't used to domestic cats, american birds are retarded and don't know how to dodge them so they'll kill thousands of birds and other small animals. Cats have been in Europe in huge populations for millenia so the environment is completely used to them. On top of that, in America there are predators such as coyotes, bobcats and other animals that will gladly kill a cat, and also more cars, which means being outside is dangerous for a cat.
Of course, in typical fashion, americans think the whole world is like USA and will get mad at you if you're from Europe and you let your cat outside.
>>
>Walk into room
>Cat runs up and lies down in front of me and acts like he was there for hours

>>
>>4680235
It's more that we're angry that some fucking retard thinks an animal that is 1/4 as smart as a chihuahua "appreciates the freedom" if intruding on my property to FUCKING SHIT AND PISS ON MY. FUCKING. PROPERTY.

So I shoot them and say "raccoons". Or I leave out poison and say "raccoons". Or I get a cheap shitbull, leave it in my backyard for a night, and say "was concerned about burglars and raccoons". And then, they get the message, that cats do not belong outside, because if they let them outside, I will gladly kill their worthless fucking vermin animal

>catfags:
>CATS ARE THE SMARTEST
>AND THE WISEST
>THEY ARE APEX PREDATORS
>NOTHING SHOULD FUCK WITH THEM
>IF IT DOES ITS BROKEN
>Coyotes, wolves, eagles, jackals, foxes, pumas, owls, dogs, raccoons, and radiator leaks: Are you stupid?
All wrong. Keep your retarded mesopredator vermin off my fucking property so I can stop leaving antifreeze out. The retards with the alley dog figured this out after dog 1 died. Why can't catfags accept YOUR STUPID FUCKING VERMIN ANIMAL DOES NOT APPRECIATE FREEDOM, IT IS NOT A PERSON, IT IS A DUMB SOULLESS AUTOMATON FOLLOWING ITS INSTINCTS THAT YOU COULD KEEP SATED WITH A BALL OF STRING FFS

AMMO AND ANTIFREEZE IS EXPENSIVE AND I AM TIRED OF WASTING IT.

Pet cats are causing extinctions in europe too including killing off the real cats by spreading genetic retardation. You also do such insane things as put dogs down for hunting cats while the same cats would not be hunted if they were not uncontrolled enough to be able to harm the environment, by doing the same thing to the queen’s animals.

>>
>>4680510
Well there's not much you can do, vet is the only way to kno what he has.
The picture isn't clear, I can't udnerstand what's going on. If it's like a flesh wound you could apply an ointment not toxic for cat or aloe vera.
>>
>>4680693
I know you're in good faith but feeding stray cats doesn't mean taking care of them. The more you feed them the more cats will arrive until the situation gets out of control.
Get the kittens and mom spayed. Call shelters and rescues.
>>
>>4680731
the cats are already spayed. There aren't any more stray cats around where i live only the ones i feed i've seen around also there aren't any no kill shelters near me that i know of so putting them in a shelter is something i can't do that been feeding them for almost half a year now and these 2 fights happened within the last week so idk why they're fighting now
>>
>>4670097
I have never seen a cat that did not go for a length of kitchen twine. You can twitch it and jerk it and slide it across the floor away from him. They hate to let it disappear around a corner, if you want to get a cat good:
>Walk around a corner trailing the string behind you
>Stop, letting about an inch or two of string rest on the cat's side of the corner
>Wait a beat
>Slowly creep it back around the corner
Never fails. Same thing works on bass, lol.
>>
>>4670459
They do get sad being alone for 8 hours a day, you should get two cats if you don't have family.
>>
>>4670967
You'll be fine. I was allergic to the stuff they used before animax, THATs what you gotta look out for.
>>
So I've been feeding this stray cat. She sleeps outside my door now. Let's me pet her but is still hesitant doesn't do anything mean tho, talks to me alot. I wanna see if I can bring her inside but I own two cats what's the best approach so a fight doesn't start between them? My female cat gets territorial
>>
>>4680813
How big is the area? They are probably competing for the territory. If you can divide the place in two areas, one for the new cats and one for the mom + kittens. Put the kittens up for adoption when they're weaned.
>>
>>4681020
Slow interaction. Let your cats smell your hands when you come home after having spent time with the stray cat.
When you finally take the new cat inside you let her stay inside a room all for her for the first few days/one-two weeks, during that time you gradually make them interact. To avoid the resident cats getting jealous, increase the number of litter boxes (one per cat) and food/water bowls.
>>
>>4680729
It was the nail that has grown so much that perfored the flesh and came out on the other side making a full circle.
I was afraid of sedating the cat since he's 21 and hes not manageable (aggressive when scared), in the end all went well at the vet, just a little expensive.

Isn't the EU trying to make it literally illegal to let your cat out of the house?
You're also getting a cross section of the most vocal retards.
Statistically speaking though letting your cat roam outside halves the lifespan, which is reason enough for me to keep mine indoors.
They also have an undeniable negative effect on local animal populations that are having a hard enough time as it it.
An outdoor cat also has a surprisingly large territory, they don't just stay in the back yard, and will wind up being over fed by a half dozen people along its route.

Hey guys. got my first kitten Benihana about a month and a half ago (he was four weeks old). he's very friendly and has a lot of energy but if he's not sleeping he is literally biting and playing. i can't "pet" him because he just tries biting my hand.
I play with him at least 30m-1hr a day and he has many toys and even another cat in the house (that doesn't like being around him since he's always in play mode)
is this something that lightens up over time or do i just have a spaz cat? was he taken from his litter to soon?
everyone i've talked to in person says it's just the kitten phase but my other cat is so chill and loves pets and then Beni is just the opposite.
