Platypuses are the only animal that you could make a complete omelette with, they produce eggs and secrete milk.

Australia is unbelievably based when it comes to conservation, you would be better off murdering someone that to harm a hair on a protected animal like a Platy or Quokka.

Plats have UV sensitive plates on their bills, it allows them to "see" prey above or below them while underwater.

They love fish food and will waddle from creeks across lawns to koi ponds.

The first evidence of the platypus in the fossil record is from China.

Platypuses have no stomach, they have a muscular tube similar to those found in reptiles. This allows them to digest hard shelled animals like crayfish.

Their primary predator are owls.

The population of platypuses have increased since the colonization of Australia, they were teetering on the verge of extinction due to hunting and the use of bushfires to drive wild animals into traps.

You can help the Platypus right now by joining a river walking society and picking up dangerous items like torn fishing nets, hooks and plastic rubbish.

Do you have a link to more info on this?
I knew their bills were sensitive to touch and electrical currents but the uv is news to me.
Surely if they're just UV sensitive plates then they wouldnt be able to do more than detect light/dark - you need a lens or at least a pigmented cup to have any sort of directionality.

Male platypuses love to play tug like dogs do. David Fleay used to play with his during showings with a dish mop. He would clamp on to it so hard he could be pulled out of the water with it. That being said lay a platy in a dry soft towel and it seems to be just about guaranteed nap time.

Absolutely not. My end goal is a parcel of land in platypus territory with water access and enough room to put in a farm pond and create some wetland. I will build them a paradise and protect them and then hopefully get to befriend them. Then help them have a place to multiply and be prosperous. A place with lots of naturally occurring food and protected shelter.

This is your daily reminder to want a platypus.
>>
>>4494773
This is a noble goal dear Platy-Anon, Wetlands seem like they are permeant fixtures, but they require constant tending, either a delicate dance between animal and plant life, usually with people maintaining the balance.

I know in the Northern territories, you can get some tax goodies and grants for maintaining land inhabited flora or fauna doing poorly on a national level. For example someone I know gets a few quid a month for allowing a corner pasture to go fallow because a threatened saxifrage like plant grows in abundance there.

Perhaps if one bought land, formally zoned as agricultural use, bordering a waterway of known platypodal providence and reformed the property with native plants and allowed the creek to return to it's natural course. Perhaps you might even earn some financial support? I mean they pay someone to not mow a lichen every month, it's worth looking into?

I looked into what a platy-habitat would entail and to make a long story short; platyanon's apporach would be best.

Duck-Puppies are protected on a Federal level and on a State/county level, but as long as you were passively observing them or benignly allowing them to paddle around you and do platy things, your only obligation would be to cause them no harm and to contact the suitable authorities if you find a wounded plat.

Normally dislike my Government, but regarding endangered animals the laws on the books are comprehensive and make me all binky blue.

>Can a platypus survive in a lake in Georgia?
Most likely yes. The main concern is unnatural predators and hazards like crawfish traps a dangerous trash in the water like discarded fishing line and other things they can become entangled by.
>If so what's the best way to obtain a bunch platypussies?
Legally there are very few options currently. They have been loaned to certain agencies for research purposes and the San Diego safari park actually has a breading pair on loan from the Sidney zoo. Of less officially sanctioned means. Juvenile platypus often get washed out to sea during the onset of monsoon season. If you are willing to post up in a platypus carrying river tributary during monsoon season with a net and a thermal camera you might be able to scoop one in open water. As they are still listed as fur baring animals internationally they actually qualify for maritime salvation. It's very speculative, but that's my backup plan if the farm in Tanzania thing doesn't work out.
>Also, what is the plural form of platypus
According to David fleay and Attenborough the plural is platypuses although my understanding is that the Latin pluralization is actually platypodes.
And I'm sure you are curious, but embarrassed to ask. Yes it's true. Unlike echidnas platypuses have a completely normal bifurcated penis just like the rest of us.

I hope that answers your questions.

what sound do platypuses make
>>
>>4506699

Their vocalizations are quite low and limited to raspy purrs and soft growls.

They smell a bit musky like a fox but don't seem to have a particularly distinctive smell.

Their fluff is very soft and very fine and their little bills and feet are soft and squishy.

Their favorite things are towels, koi-fish food, crayfish and clean creeks.

Their least favorite things are owls, river-rats and creeks littered with human detritus.

I think it's reasonable to to say so anon.

Regular platy is like that delightfully autistic boy or girl in your year, the one who touches their face a lot when they talked ,only ate peanut butter sandwiches and called the headmistress "mum" at the school assembly.

Those two ancient platys are the "sitting in the corner of the resource room making dinosaur noises" kind of autistic.

A new challenger appears. Ancient platypuses are just absurd. This is
Steropodon galmani. Pity there aren't any better pictures from tens of millions of years ago.

>Hairy potato body, with a chaffinch beak, fingerless gloves and the tail of a Labrador puppy.

This was an early, concept model, never intended for mass production.

IDK I probably wouldn't mind a goofy little platy potato. Although I think I prefer a platypus with a proper "duck bill". I guess we will never know if they are as naturally delightful as their modern counterparts.

They made the wise choice of delivering her from the clinic in a pillow case and not a towel. If they used a towel they would have to leave it behind, hence breaking the laws regarding littering.

The bag helps keep the animal calm. Like putting a joey or a koala in its pouch. They don't leave anything behind when they release an animal.
