that's why mutt, and mongrel are insults. the well groomed and trained dogs of nobility are excluded from such terms - they are bred with care and dogs that tend even slightly to being pitbullish are culled immediately. but among the peasants, such dogs are bred, prolifically, often by accident, and the peasants actually think they might be useful (they aren't but if the peasants were smart they wouldn't be peasants). back then a well bred dog wasn't necessarily super inbred to dog show standards, dog shows are actually recent, all dogs would have been mutts by their standards until the past few hundred years, but they were purposefully bred and bad dogs were kept out of the gene pool.
