Play fight edition.
Post, talk, and discuss play fighting.

Our bouts in the truck with my gloves have evolved into sparing matches outside on the grass. She gets me sometimes, normally going for the gloves or the sleeves of my jacket, barking at me to tell me to play fight with her It doesn't hurt a lot, I give her pushes, redirects and toss her a foot away and she comes back for more.

Is what I'm doing wrong?

My ban is up lol...

I got a "happy" hoodie for this dude. I don't think he is happy when wearing it, but it does seem to make him more chill when drying him off. I also don't need to be hyper vigilant with the dryer. His head is at least 70% fur and ears.

>>4463822
Same. Is there a good brush? The slicker seems to be okay, but one of those saw blade ones looks like it may be better.

Yeah they are nicely made. I think I'm going to get the Xlarge for Leo. The large is a little tight on him. There is a marked improvement in his demeanor when I'm using the HVD on him.

Ill just say I was being "rude" on ck...

Another one of him in the hoodie. You can see just how fluffy he is.

Our scent work has been going great also. I can bury the scent tin underground and he will find it. I've started tethering him, walking maybe 100 feet away to hide it and he will run over following the scent trail I leave.

Sometimes I will walk in zigzags or circle around to him to make things more challenging and he is almost always successful without any guidance from me. I'll try to get a vid up later today.

I highly recommend teaching your dog nosework it is really really fun.

Deer are my friends. Things that kill deer are not.
>>
>>4464363
I think the local yotes stole my favorite ball on string. :(
>>
>>4464365
Deer are food. Lowly automatons. Grass to meat machines. Uncaring, unthinking, unfeeling. Filthy and diseased. A release from their existence as pathetic, mindless vermin is a mercy.
>>
>>4464368
That's very cool and you're welcome to that opinion, outside of my property.
>>
>>4464371
If the coyotes are bothering the deer, I will set up a salt lick outside of your property and make sure they are never bothered again. Then, finally, the coyotes can live without worrying about being murdered by some psycho retard who thinks forest rats are his personal livestock, and there will be a major dip in the tick population. Then I'd feed the dead deer to the yotes over time to get them on my side. Win/win.
>>
>>4464380
What if the yotes are killing your personal livestock tho?

The interesting and somewhat philosophical answer I believe is that rather than killing the yotes you should build taller fences to keep them out. From what I have heard female coyotes will go into heat when one of their pack dies, so killing them, fighting nature, actually worsens the problem.

Don't bother with the slicker brush or shedding blade, you want an undercoat rake, the other two won't hardly touch the undercoat and you'll be brushing all day. Hit the undercoat first then touch up with a shedding blade after.

What do I even do? It's been months now
>>
>>4464521
I'm assuming taking the dog back in isn't an option here, so
Go pick up the dog and drop it at a shelter
If you don't trust any shelters then either find a new owner or don't do anything
And if you can't even find the dog in the first place it's not really worth torturing yourself over

I think having more than one dog helps when one dies, it sucks losing a dog, it will take a while before you can fully let those thoughts and feelings of sadness go but having more than one dog will help to mitigate those feelings

I think if I had just one dog whom I spend a good chunk of my life with die I wouldn't be able to recover. But when you have other dogs to rely on it makes it easier. I don't know, just a thought I had

When wolves were re-introduced in America up in the northwest a biologist was hired to study how to prevent wolves from killing livestock, he figured out by tracking wolf patterns that you shouldn’t kill the wolfs because if you hit the matriarch or pack leader or whatever wolves do, it would splinter the pack leading to having two packs in two ranches killing twice as much instead of one pack over a large territory. So the answer was state-funded livestock replacement and wolf deterrents like livestock guardian dogs or other stuff. He was black-balled shortly after by the ranchers who funded his study :)

Not sure how cayotes work

>Will you be getting him boots?
I don't think so. It's just short cold spell, the slush is almost gone now. Getting him used to boots would probably take longer than the cold will last.

Also holy shit, looking through these pics made me realize how much he's grown already. I've had him for just 2 weeks today. I love it
>>
>>4464383
In addition put one livestock guardian dog out there and the packs won’t get a chance

If you have chickens you should be protecting them from local dogs anyway. As for me I had a bad coyotes problem in the countryside I grew up in, lost my yorkie to them. Now that I’m older I’ve got big dogs on the property just for coyotes, and airtight fences for the little dogs, idk how my cats survived 10 years I think she sticks to the dogs or certain areas. But leave the slaughtering of coyotes to animal control if needed, and set up deterrents. We’re in a dog thread go get a big ole dog, they’ll learn your house and stay away.

When you catch her make her face the object and repeat "no" and then brush her teeth as punishment.
When she comes back in, inspect her mouth and smell it. If it smells bad make a sound she won't forget then brush her teeth as punishment.

It’s okay shit happens, if it makes you feel any better my first dog was re-homed to somebody who abandoned him at my couch and we’ve been 10 years strong. You’re dog could be found by someone somewhere and be cares for
>>
>>4465210
Yeah, at first I had one dog but then in 2011 we got another dog so it's 2, then years later I get another dog so it's 3 then the first one passed so it's back at 2, then years later I get another dog, it's back at 3, now it's back at 2 because the oldest one passed.

It's a pretty interesting pattern but it's not one done on purpose, the dogs just land on us, we adopted one and the other two were given to us by other people.
>>
>>4465177
I love this dog
>>
>>4465089
So bro, I’ve had some chewers there’s a couple things

A: pick up shit off the ground and buy a shit ton of toys and place them throughout your house as puppies, strategically place some by cords and wires so they’ll see that first. They’ll just get accustomed to those things instead from the start.

As a puppy when they grab stuff they shouldn’t hold them in front of its face and say no and give them a new toy, when they chew that make them feel like the best girl in the world. People usually stop here and don’t get why it doesn’t work but this is just setup for the final stage, your dog doesn’t even understand yet it’s just being ingrained that some things good, some bad.

After a bit find a suitable punishment that doesn’t involve beating the shit out of your dog and start doing that when they do something wrong, depending on age redirect them towards chew toys but don’t give them treats. Treats give a sense of reward and doesn’t Chew toys are a bit more like “oh cool something to chew I wanted to chew” What you’ve done is establish “when I’m chewing this he’s mad, but he gives me something else and he isn’t, and lately when I chew something he’s mad and something unpleasant happens but these bones and ropes he isn’t”

People stop at the reward stage or start with punishment. Teach it to what no means, eventually your dog should get to the point that when it sees you pick up a sneaky shoe it slipped off with it’ll have its tail down, that’s when it’s time to just punish it if it’s chewing something bad because it knows. Your goal is to redirect it and then slowly incorporate punishment/reward making sure it understands before you escalate, gradually you pull back any rewards so eventually it’s just “I chew this he doesn’t say no or he unpleasant but if I chew that he’ll get mad even if he’s not looking” a lot of people just stop at the “give them a different toy” part.
>>
>>4465089
Oh last thing your dog might have a desire to rip and tear, provide a variety of toys, sometimes they wanna chew a bone, sometimes they want to rip something apart. In my experience dogs like fetching but since those durable chew toys don’t break they don’t chew them much. I hate stuffed toys bc of the cleaning but dogs love em bc they can rip em up and tear them out
>>
>>4465237
Why do you shitpost with this ugly huskoid

Her owner had her spayed a whole year ago
>>
Took my dogs in today bc they were behind on their seasonal heart worms, the vet decided to give my oldest a good look for good measure and said “yep she’s old, you notice that? Thought so.” Ole girls got another 3-5 in her but she’s crossing over to retirement this year, the energy comes in burst.

Anyway my other dog taught my puppy how to open the front screen door while I was showering (my foundation shifted and sometimes the main door doesn’t shut right). Thanks for being a good role model and I’m really happy I introduced the puppy to most of my neighbors who got her back to me.

Lil jojo is pretty much potty trained except cold rainy weather though we’re working on it, I’ve seen her pee in excitement once. My gsp had a horrible problem with it where I had to remain very neutral with her everytime I came home. Funny enough jojo was getting my attention and I jumped up and said “Who wants to play” when she started peeing, to which I yelled no, then I thought I had got her excited and then realized I left the fucking doggy door closed. Gently let her come to me and I pet her and took her outside and gave her more praisin’. Not all accidents need negative reinforcement, and most accidents should end with you in the backyard letting your dog know they’re amazing for peeing in some grass.

Funny enough my gsp and her mom pee in excitement, fear, submission towards other dogs. Literally seen them roll their belly to each other and pee. She was potty trained with the most neutrality I’ve pottied a dog

Her first birthday is coming up at the end of the month, any birthday ideas for a dog? Thinking of just taking the day off and going on adventures together.

Yeah, he's EXHAUSTED. My siblings were visiting this weekend, with their own dogs. A 4 year old Miniature Pinscher and an 11 year old Pomeranian.
The pomeranian turned into a puppy himself, and they wouldn't stop playing. All 3 were exhausted today. They played nicely though.
Balder is the first puppy either of them have met, so i'm impressed by how patient they were, especially the pomeranian. Look at this
>https://streamable.com/5h8zsu
They were like this the whole time, but neither of them made a sound.

On a side note...
Is webm capped at 17-18 seconds? I will have 2 files same size one is 12 seconds the other is 20 and it decides to cut the longer one down to like 13 seconds, while leaving the 12 second one unaltered.

there is no time cap, but if it can't maintain a decent resolution it will have to trim the video to reduce filesize. for longer videos, manually reduce the resolution before uploading.
webm related was originally ~30s, but to fit it in 3MB it had to be trimmed to 22s, after I reduced the resolution to 720p. 2-pass encoding will allow for longer/higher quality webms, but that will take twice as long to process, making timeouts more common, meaning i need to implement a proper queue/reload to download the file. might do that next weekend if im bored.
>>
>>4466951
seems like i need to look into the resolution thing, resolution should've stayed at 720p, not increased like it was.
also, i think global attachment size limit was bumped up, should be safe to allow 4MB webm generation. might do that after work today, should be quick

>>
>>4466957
just took a look at the stuff you uploaded, looks like you managed to finally get him to sit? so cute
>>
>>4466957
oh and try reducing the amount of movement in the videos. stabilize the camera(if you can do it on a tripod, that's ideal), and keep it more focused. all the running around is going to balloon the file size very quickly. more change between frames = bigger files
>>
>>4466963
Yes! Very satisfying to see him figure it out. It's kind of funny because I can tell he has no idea why he needs to sit but just does it because I give him his reward after he sits.

Having the scent tin buried underground and having him find it is really cool to see also. Pretty sure that is how certain master level trials are done in competition.

Next step is teaching him the 3 other scents used in akc nosework trials. Clove, fennel, and cypress
>>

never had a dog and the ones i find the cutest are shibas, akitas or the german shepherd, all of them described as not beginner friendly. should i just give up on the thought of having a dog? it would be unfair to the dog to get a breed i don't really want to get just to prepare myself for one i actually want, right?

There are an enormous amount of dog breeds out there, look harder for something you want and that won't eat the mailman, the neighbors cats or kids.

>>4467049
Depends on the lineage, show line dogs are pretty mellow but have more health problems, working line dogs have high drive and can get aggressive and neurotic if you don't give them enough stuff to do. And they are pretty aloof in general, best described as a "one man dog". I am not getting another male german shepherd after this one, I think. I miss having a chill super friendly dog that got along with everyone and everything.
>>
>>4467043
Yes it was a lot faster than usual. The quality is good enough to see what's going on, so I'm happy.

>>4467048
I wouldn't say my showline gsd was a bad choice as a first dog, but I got him from a world class breeder. BYB GSD sounds like a possibility for temperment issues thom

He is a pain in the ass sometimes, but he has never shown real aggression, and is very easy to train in most things. He needs his daily 1.5-2 hours of mentally stimulating activity and exercise and he is usually pretty well behaved after dinner.

I would say the main thing is figuring out how much time you will be willing to spend training and letting your dog exercise/mental stimulation if you want a higher energy breed.
>>

>>
>all greyhounds come from shelters
>all shelters mandate spay/neuter before you pick one up
>"it's healthy!! you need to spay or neuter them or they'll have health risks and die!!!"
>all racing dogs are specifically never spayed or neutered when racing exactly because not doing so keeps them in better health
I really love greyhounds and I'd love to adopt one but this shit makes me livid
>>
>>4467122
What do you mean by "freaky"? It's just how nature designed them! Besides, it's not like humans don't have long tongues. You just don't see it because they're tucked away in our mouths. But yeah, it's kinda cool how dogs can use their tongues to do things, like lick people's parts. ;)
>>
>>4467128
I don't think human tongues are anywhere near as long
>>
>>4467127

Faggot, just leads to humping and aggressive behavior. Neuter your males
>>
>>4467554
>aggressive behavior.
it literally does the opposite, kind of
neutering makes dogs less anxious. most fights happen because dogs are scared/uncomfortable around each other,s o more anxiety is bad.
sometimes the dog is just being an asshole though, and in that case them being more bold makes them more aggressive.

Good strategy but eventually all of them will die and it will hurt even more.

All 3 of my dogs died like few years apart. Their death was natural after 15 years but I feel like a complete failure of a dog owner. I never got them trained to their full potential because I was a dumb high schooler. It's been like 7 years for me since the last one died and the loss was too much for me I can't own another pet so I come here to enjoy others with their pets
