Anyone here keep ducks?
I heard drakes can be massive assholes for no reason and will fight anyone including you, fight roosters, and kill ducks and hens

I always wanted to keep ducks but I might settle for another chicken coop if they can't live in peace

>keep ducks?
yes
>drakes can be massive assholes
they fight sometimes, the females fight sometimes. they are fighting mainly when some different ducks are introduced.
>fight anyone including you
how is a duck gonna fight you they have round beaks? id think a chicken could do more damage
>drakes rape ducks
yes sometimes it seems like the female doesnt want but she can fight him off or just submit.
>kill ducks and hens
idk about mixing drakes with chickens. the thing is the drakes have an actual dick that they stick in, whereas chickens are designed for some weird lesbian sex with a rooster. idk
ducks are pretty cool, mine are nervous of me because i never handle them. they are easy to control because they are magnetized together rather than scatter like chickens.

>duck gonna fight you they have round beaks
are you thinking of geese? they are much more agressive. they will bite you and try to defend their flock.
but still they have round beaks and can only nip it doesnt hurt.

Can I get a few Muscovies to be sitters? Apparently they're very broody.

So a few Muscovy ducks thay will live a while (no drakes), with Peking drakes and ducks for breeding, eggs, and meat.

I’ve owned like every breed of domestic duck and also some exotic ones like mandarins and wood ducks. Never had an issue with aggression. In domestic ducks drakes will only pick on other birds because they’re trying to rape them. They’re certainly a lot more docile to each other than chickens.

They have random personalities and males will fight like roosters will.
We have a male that was raised with chickens and he fucking despises our chickens and will chase them. Another male call duck is tiny as hell but will try and nip at your ankles. The rest are pretty chill.
Depending on the drake you will need 2-4 hens for him. Otherwise they will literally breed the poor females to death. Although sometimes you can get away with one to one ratios.
Call ducks especially pair off well, but don't like swimming like other ducks and prefer just to splash in shallow puddles and dishes.
Our one bossy female call duck is pretty funny since she will quack very loudly if her flock gets more than a few feet from her. They will then circle back to her.
Also if they aren't making a nest ducks will lay eggs wherever they fucking want. So keep that in mind.
>>
>>4403365
Ours did pretty well nesting, but we never let them hatch since we had enough birds at the time. Only thing to keep in mind is to make sure their area is fairly good size.
When the ground is wet and muddy ducks will bury their beaks in them and look for bugs. Problem is that this will add up and soon their pen will be full of small holes everywhere. Because they are some of the largest ducks if they step in one of those holes they can hurt their legs. Ducks have very fragile legs and larger ones especially.
We have an old drake that hurt his leg and doesn't move much. Honestly surprising he has made it this long.

I've had drakes that were dicks and drakes that were whimpy cowards. It depends on the duck. My current one likes to follow the chickens around, once they get big enough there isn't much infighting between chickens and roosters although you definitely do not want to brood them together.

Okay boys, I need your help with this one. These ducks just showed up on my property. I walked past them with my dog on the opposite side of the ditch creek, maybe 20 feet away and they didn't flinch.

Is this a lost flock of domesticated duckies? I might kidnap them if they are. They are quite beautiful, and I quite enjoy duck eggs.

Back in 2008, I was out for a walk along the local canal near where it passes through a nice country park, and I was waiting for the people I was with to catch up as they'd gone back a bit for some reason, so I was alone next to the canal. I was looking at the ducks swimmng past when an old fella came along and greeted me and he said ""see that duck there? that's a very rare duck, it's called a mandarin duck". I hadn't really clocked it but among the normal mallards was a duck covered in all these nice colours. And that's the story of how I learned about these ducks. I've since seen a family of them while kayaking along the river Dee in Wales. Good taste in ducks, anon.

I was kayaking along a narrow river and ended up approaching a swimming mother duck with several babbys from behind (not the mandarins from my last post). Although I had no intention of disturbing them, I was obviously seen as a threat and it was interesting to see the mother duck send the babbys to swim into a channel formed beneath the long grass that was hanging over into the river, meanwhile, the mother duck moved out into the middle of the river directly ahead of me and started to thrash the water around and bring as much attention to itself as it could while swimming away. Those babbys were in good hands (or wings). Hope they all managed to find each other afterwards.

No, it's impossible. Ducks have small dicks, so they can't survive something that's 6in long and 3in girth. That's why the only aquatic bird zoophiles have sex with trumpeter swans, because they are large enough they won't get injured.

Mandarin ducks are beautiful. An ex of mine kept a few and the female would hop on my shoulder whenever I entered the aviary.

There are a fair few of them in East Sussex. Saw a few around the rivers/ponds, there. The males are stunning. It's cool that they make their beaks bright red to impress the female

Drakes are assholes, yes. They're loud, they like to command the ducks around, they're rapists and they brawl with each other over who gets to rape who. But they're not very dangerous. They might drown a duckling, but they can't exactly massacre anyone with those beaks. Even if a predator invades the coop, there's little a drake can do.
Anyway, you'll have the least problems if you either just get one drake or if you get several but from the same nest. But there should be at least one, otherwise you get rowdy lesbian ducks.

I've had eggs from Indian runners and another, fatter breed (might've been a Rouen, I'm not sure) and couldn't really tell a difference in taste, only in size.
