>>
>>4187926

Alpines are very smart goats. They can be quite sassy. Young goats learn tricks incredibly quickly. I reccomend teaching them some. It's pretty fun.
>>
MAAAH!
>>
>>4187970
can you make them sit or do a flip?
>>
>>4189668
Sitting sounds more advanced, but possible . I taught one of mine to spin in a circle pretty quickly as well as going on their hind legs to touch their nose to my hand.
>>
>>4189776
That's fun. What do you do to train them?
>>
>>4189866
First. Get some goat treats they love.

Then it's a matter of showing them that following vocal commands means treat.

The easiest way to do this is teaching the "come" or "here" trick. Say here, touch their nose and give them treat. Continue repeating and increasing the challenge until they will walk to you to tap their nose on your hand or go on their hind legs.

You can also use a training ball, which is a soft red ball on a long stick.

Goats are curious, so they will go to sniff or nibble on the ball and that's when you give them the treat.

Usually it only takes a few minutes for them to get it. Younger goats are way easier than old ones who will just get pissed off at you lol.

The enthusiasm of young goats to do tricks for you is really adorable.

Had an interesting experience a couple hours ago.
>biking home after a day of garage saling
>pass a paddock with a couple goats
>goats bleat at me
>say "hello goats" back and continue on my merry way
>goats follow bleating down the length of the fence
>some ways down the road I realize I can not only still hear the goats but they seem much louder
>look behind me
>one of the goats has phased through a six strand electric fence and is chasing after me
down the side of the road

Had to wheel around and walk after the goat back to the house across the road from the paddock to let them know they had an escapee. A lady soldier driving by stopped to ask If I needed help but I figured I could manage. (as long as someone was home)
Couple big dogs in the yard put a wrinkle in going up to the house but their barking brought a girl from out back and she came over to get it back in. Or tried. She got the gate open and attempted to get Goat1 back in while keeping goat2 from getting out but goat1 wasn't cooperating. She finally had to lead it all the way around the paddock to the stalls, during which time made my getaway once I was sure it wasn't going to resume pursuit.

Fellow goat bros, do you dehorn or not? If so what method? Do you do it yourself or have the vet do it?

I personally dehorn all the goats born on the farm with the hot iron method after I learned to do it from the vet. We have like 40+ kids a year so it would cost too much for the vet to come out and do it which means no painkiller. Its pretty awful while you're doing it and no doubt it causes intense pain. However, they seem to recover pretty quick and are back running around within 5-10 mins of it being done. I do it so when they fight its less traumatic, so they don't get caught in the fence and ripped off as the goat panics causing them to bleed out, and to be honest pure cosmetics/customer choice cause most people that buy goats from me want them that way. I feel really bad about doing it but I kind of see it as a necessary evil and 60 seconds of intense pain that is over forever once its done. I also give them their shots and castrate the males at the same time so all the bad stuff is over with at once.

Pic related, this is a little guy a couple days after the horn burning and he seems fine.

Hope I didn't kick off a shit storm, been farming for 8 years and have a degree in Animal and Poultry Science from a well known ag college but its my first time really posting on /an/.

>ywn have that primal dopamine and oxytocin dump a less sentient and more instinctual animal feels completing its purpose in life and continuing the species and specific gene line.

In the sun, two healthy babies nursing, everybody well fed, never been really hungry your entire life, out of clean water, or faced a true fight or flight level danger, healthy, lots of herdmates to socialize with, tons of space to roam, things built specifically to climb and play on, and with a barn to sleep in at night. Twice a year the humans jab you with a needle that feels like a bee sting that you don't understand but they give you treats afterwards so its worth it. No lions or Africans trying to eat you. The absolute dream goat life.

Today I learned you don't sneak up on a kid resting in the designated napping bucket without warning them or they get scared when they first wake up.

That's the method my mother has used for years. They recently got back into goating and the wether they had hung itself on their bucks horns, so now the goats are collarless until they can sell that buck. It's awful but I think the alternatives can be worse.
