why does this keep happening? she struggles so hard against getting the eyedrops that it's nearly impossible to get even 1 in, let alone 2. Is it because she's less than a year old and has never been around in springtime?

No idea honestly.
For how many more days does she need to take the drops?
Don't give up, you can do it. Be obstinate and patient.
>>
>>4161839
"until it gets better+3 days" but that was only when 1 eye had the issue. While it has definitely gotten better, the other eye getting issues concerns me greatly.
>>
>>4161780
Try laying her belly up and just pet her face a lot. sneak in the drops between petting. Mine didn't even notice.
>>
>>4161848
The second she sees the eyedropper she squirms like mad. I'm going to try wrapping her up in a towel later.
>>
>>4161799
That's the time of the day when crepuscular animals are the most active. Plus, he's very young.
Try to tire him out with more playing after dinner/before you go to bed, or during the day when you have free time.

>>4161811
>>4161816
They have intense eyes.
>>
>>4161851
If you can get help from someone else, the easiest way for me is to wrap in towel and have someone petting while I do the medicine. Usually I'm along though so I just do towel and get a bit forceful to hold the cat in place, and give treats afterwards. Giving mine medicine twice a day and he doesn't hate me yet.

Holy shit I have claws
>>
>>4161903
Consider a laser pointer since it's pretty easy to get them to shoot across a whole room. Cats aren't distance or endurance runners, so if you can keep them running until they're breathing heavy they get pretty tuckered out.
I know with my cat he also likes plastic lids, you know like on a cup of yogurt, or a cup of wonton soup from chinese takeout? They're really good frisbees, and I've never met a cat that wont chase them across the room or try to swat them out of the air.
Alternatively, if he's got a little ball or cat toy you can try throwing that and letting him chase it. My cat has a couple of balls that he'll drop in my lap and get impatient if I don't throw it, at which point he'll chase it across the house, playing cat soccer, until he eventually brings it back for me to throw again.
My old place used to have this one long hallways that had wood floors, and I'd flick cat treats, or piece of food down the hallway and he'd have fun going after it.
>>
>>4161903
Every cat is different, you could try changing his habits a bit and see if there are any differences in the behavior in the morning.
>been trying to get a good 30 minutes of playing
You're already doing better than most people. More play is always welcome though, especially for a cat that isn't an adult yet.
Have you thought of interactive toys? To not make him feel lonely and bored when nobody's home. https://youtu.be/2ScMKqZVTJk
>>4161921
>laser pointer
nottodisushittoagen.jpeg
It overstimulates cats and stresses them out since they can't physically touch and catch it. If you really want to use it, end the game session by replacing the dot with a kibble the cat can actually catch, or with a toy.

if i have to give eyedrops to this cat for much longer i'm going to lose my fucking mind.
"wrap her up in a towel" the vet says. What he doesn't mention is that she'll wiggle around and be nearly impossible to hold still inside it.
"pinch the back of her neck" people tell me. She still moves around and hates it a shitload.
It shouldn't be a 3 person job to drop meds into a cat's fucking eyes. I love how i hadn't even had the cat a month and this bullshit starts, all but guaranteeing she'll hate being held forever and probably hate everybody forever.

>>4162523

>>
>>4162160
She won't hate you, eventually she'll forget. It's not like you are physically hurting her, or leaving her injured. After you have applied eyedrops and let her go she realizes that you didn't do anything to her.
Of course no cat wants to be held/trapped, that is the problem. She is gonna fight you every time. Deal with it and do not give up.
In the past I had to administer eye drops to a stray cat I temporarily brought home so I understand what a crazy journey it can be. I ended up not following the schedule precisely (had to give him the drops 2-3 times a day) but the cat was fine and his eyes healed anyway.
If you can't find a way out, try asking your vet if they know of a different therapy.

If you want a higher bird population and have a backyard just make sure they have enough hides (thorny dense shrubs), safe breeding places (corvid woodpecker and marten safe nestboxes or bigger thorny shrubs) and food (lots of weeds and insects, birdbath, feeder). Fenced shrubs are also great. You can have a neighbourhood full of hunting outdoor cats, some birds of prey and also a shitload of songbirds at the same time with an environment that supports high bird breeding as long as you live somewhere with natural cat like predators.
If you're not, even a collar won't help.
>>
>>4161799
If your cat has too much energy, you need to play with it more. Especially kittens. You can't just drug him up like an ADHD kid.

My cat (11 years old, male, neutered) has always been shy and scared of strangers that came over, he'd hide under the blankets until the person hasn't left. At the sound of the doorbell he understands that someone is coming so he goes to hide. Other than that he's normal and physically healthy.
Things seem to have worsened lately. He's become hesitant when playing or eating, also for instance when I come home and don't take my jacket off right away he looks at me from a distance meowing, sometimes hides too.
Should I take him to the vet for a blood test? Is a slight but visible change in behavior a red flag for a disease?

>>
>>4163802

>>
>>4163802
Nothing to be worried about unless they all start falling out.
Its just like a hair, each follicle has a cycle where it will grow for a while, pause, sort of die and pinch off the hair from the root, and then start growing a new hair from the root that pushes the old one out. Sometimes you'll fine one just laying around. Once in a while it might fall out when you're stroking his face.
I always poke my cat in the face with it when he's sleeping so he can see how it feels to get woken up like that.

it triggers me also. it's like when people eat loudly.
>>
>>4163873
not true my cat likes the smell of my sandals
>>
>>4163879
Its like driving by a dead skunk on the road, you always take a whiff because a smell that bad needs to be appreciated for the fine bouquet of terrible it is.
Cats also have an additional gland in the roof of their mouth that's really sensitive to trace chemicals. Same organ snakes have. Its why they do that weird face sometimes when they're sniffing stinky things.
They are conceptualizing the aroma in a dimension we can't imagine.
And if its your sandals, you were probably wearing them outside where the cat doesn't go, and its rich with all kinds of weird odors that tickle it on an instinctual level.
>>
>>4163873
I have to say my cat always sleeps in my clothes when I leave them somewhere. I'd assume it's because they atleast associate something good with your odor.

Anons who managed to pet feral/stray cats, how long did it take you to achieve it?

There's a colony of semiferal cats that some people feed regularly, albeit in fire-and-forget manner. They don't want to be pet in general. One cat however is not as fearful and is most attracted to food. He eats snacks from the ground at 1ft from me crouching. But even though he made physical contact like pouncing my hand with snacks on it, he jumped back when I tried to pet him. I wonder how much time would I need to get him to accept petting.

Some cats will never want to be pet no matter how many weeks, months or years you spend bonding with them.
It's almost impossible to become friends with adult semiferals or ferals that grew up without a direct contact with humans.
A cute feral female cat I have been feeding for about 5 years will run away if I don't respect her self-imposed social distancing rule of 3 meters. Whenever particularly hungry she herself breaks that rule, but she never allowed me to reach out and pet her.
It was different with the daughter of this cat, since she saw me since when she was a kitten; she lets me stay around her, occasionally petting her.

This is something everyone looking to adopt a kitten should consider imo. While taking care of two kittens/cats can seem daunting, one positive is that they don't constantly seek the human for attention, and can keep each other's company.

Ours are almost inseparable; they trot around the house as a duo and often sleep alongside eachother.

wow 24? Im jealous

I had to put my Siamese cat Mimzy down on April 25 due to kidney disease, she was 15.5 years old.

I feel like a bad owner for her not living to at least 18 or something :(

She was a pure breed and they tend to live a little shorter, as well as being a female.

What did you feed your cat? Thats a very impressive lifespan - you should be proud, Reese had a wonderful life
>>
>>4165064
my cat had heart failure at 14 years and had double the breath at resting rate. i feel like he should have had at least 3 more years. miss him
>>
>>4165091
I feel your pain, my Mimzy had a very quick heart rate, at 220 bpms at rest and I believe it was due to her hyperthyroidism which was a separate issue.

I fed her whiskas dry food for 12 years regretfully :( and then once I had earned more money and got a decent job I started her on Canned salmon/beef cat foods - needless to say she had some weight issues from boredom eating and I believe that contributed to her lower lifespan than people who fed their cats blended chicken hearts/liver and so forth since they were young

You live and you learn, at least we can appreciate the time we did have with them and can be proud that we made their lives as comfortable and loving as possible - much more than nature would have provided

it's weird how i feel so down over a cat. but he's been in my life for 14 years. knowing his last moments were scary and stressful at an animal hospital make me sad. not being able to stroke his fur again also makes me sad. but he was in pain and it had to be done
>>
>>4165195
Nothing weird about it at all. They're part of your life and a thing you cared for that gave companionship in the weird way cats tend to do.
The part that always makes me feel weird is I'm generally a pretty stoic person, even at my cousin's funeral, who was like an older brother to me, I only got a little misty in my eyes, and throat got a little tight, but otherwise I held my shit together.
But the two times I've had to put my cat to sleep I sobbed like a bitch the minute I got alone.
I think maybe its because at a funeral you have to try and be strong for everyone's sake, and you collectively mourn.
With a pet, there's not as many people who can share that burden, and its just you.
Nothing else to do but take the time to process and heal.
Just remember that there are a lot of other cats out in the world who are desperate for a loving home. It isn't replacing your pet, because nothing could, but you're giving another little guy a chance.

I have to care for a newborn kitten for about 24 hours, he's 4 days old today. Have been at it for around 5-ish hours and he fed thrice in that period. He's in a box full of socks and wooly stuff, and I've put a bottle of warm water beside the box. I think he pissed at some point but I removed the wetted sock.
I'm kinda stressed and hope he won't die on me. Right now he's probably sleeping. Any tips ?
If he's not crying, does that mean that everything is okay ?
>>
https://youtu.be/G_IgFwA5GH4 what did that cat mean by this
>>
>>4165698
You have to stimulate genitals and anus to make him pee and poop, use a warm wet rag or toilet paper.
And yes keep him warm all the time, kittens can't thermoregulate their body for 1 month or so.
>>
>>4165726
Yeah, I've stimulated him, he pissed but didn't shit. Just fed him once more too and putting his box under a heat lamp for a few minutes, then I'll put the box into a bigger one with warmed bottles beside it.
I just hope I'm doing everything alright

Depends on the cat. They all have distinct personalities and will reflect your own back at you.
Good companionship, and not many things are as good at destressing you than a warm purring cat lying on you.

I know not to move them but is there anything I should be doing for them aside from making sure there's clean water and food? So ive got a cut feline 10 years old.
Shes an outdoor cat, and we live in a country where house cats and domestic dogs are apex predators. In her older days she has become more chatty, and way more demanding than before. When i wake up, make my morning tea, sit down, she give me this intense look, then proceed to jump down from the coach, walk to the door and demand that i open door to the big outside. I take on drink of my tea, Suddently cat is in front of me and begin meowing. i walk her over to the door go back to drink tea, and shes there meowing. and she wont stop until i take a walk all the way around with her, while she goes from door to door to greet my neighbors, sometimes she will go in and sleep in their furniture. And it just shook me, my cat knows more people in my neighborhood than i do.

>>4166606
You put them on the floor when you see them, and shout "No!". The tone of voice is important, they have to pick up on your bad mood when you use that voice.
Water and other deterrents are most times useless, cats don't learn through those and they can become scared of water.
>>4166616
Cats being weirdos is a common trait of every cat.
>>4166627
If you want two, always get them when they're kittens and adopt them together. Don't adopt two adults that haven't had interactions with other cats before.
Do you live with someone else? Cats are fine with being alone for some hours, as long as their human that doesn't neglect them when at home.

She has access to multiple bowls filled with catfood and water as well. She rarely eats, only if its rainy outside and she cant go hunt for insects, mice or birds. It is only if the hunt didnt go she eats her fill in dry food. Once a week i feed her raw food, and also spoil her with lots of snacks, like beef jerky but for cats. When we sleep inside she enjoy to wrap belly around my face so i get to feel that smooth soft belly fur and reassuring loud purring. Cats give is good to have in your house, because they give you calmness and a healthy blood flow.

That's mine. My sister named her Dart. I didn't like it at first but it's grown on me. How did you know she was female?
>>
Is my cat retarded? I get that they like playing but attacking the chair he's sitting on is something else. It's not even one of those things with reflective surfaces. I got him a bunch of toys which he likes, but he's just as likely to go crazy for a piece of crunchy plastic as he is for his little mouse-on-a-ball.

He's just acting like cats act.
My cats' favorite "toys" aren't even actual toys, but a bunch of DIY balls, strings, pieces of cardboards, old plushes etc.

I moved to my uncle's anbondoned house. I found a dead cat with his head entirely eaten. Cat poop everywhere including inside the bed frame. Rat poop in the kitchen and dead cockroaches. Pigeon feathers covering the shit-filled floor. Thank god I didn't bring my cat with me

There are a lot of things that can get a cat out in the wild.
That being said its not uncommon for an outdoor cat to fuck off for a while, they can have a surprisingly large area they patrol and is likely being fed by multiple people.
If you're going to let your cat outside make sure it has a collar with contact info as well as a chip.
And while I'm not as sensitive about it as some people here are, but an outdoor cat has a dramatically shorter lifespan on average, like by half thanks to accident, disease, and predation.

The retard was stuck in a tree
We got her down this morning thanks to some Mexican day labors who were doing my neighbors roof and they lended us a extended ladder.

She was really far out in the woods and wayyy up in the tree so I'm pretty amazed I was able to find her

Having your cat live until 24 AND die in its sleep means that you did everything right Anon. I'm sorry for your loss but you really did get the best possible outcome. 24 is a really old age for a kitty.

Any tips for cutting my cat got a big matted patch on her back?

I've taken her to the groomer in the past to have her shaved but she fucking hates it and is always terrified over there... I've cut them with scissors in the past but I always worry I will screw up and cut her skin, so I cut very slowly with a flea comb in between but the process is slow and usually I can't cut much before her patience runs out and she gets squirmy. I tried using a hair clipper that I use for my own hair but it just bounced right off that fuckin' thing and didn't put a dent in it. If I buy a hair clipper designed for cats will it do better or is it hopeless when it gets so thick and won't work regardless?

So, my cat was diagnosed with IBD in February. He is a european 11 years old, he had gut problems the last year that we thought it was just a gastritis, I went to vet and treated with anti-inflamatory drugs. This February we put him in a special diet for IBD cats which seems to works since the last time he did steroid was over two months ago. This happened because he lost a bit of weight (now it's normal) and puked 2-3 times in a day. He eats and he plays with the other cats.

Although, sometimes, he pukes (~1 times every 1-2 weeks) and a bit of diarrhea (like cottage cheese) every 3-4 poop. Is it normal? My vet is telling me he doesn't have inflammation anymore, though the IBD can't be cured at all. I will bring my cat to my vet May 20th for the monthly IBD check, the last month it went good without giving him any steroid shot, antibiotics and such.

My cat is always in the back of my mind when I impulse buy random shit online. I brought him just about everything I might want were I in his shoes. I brought him a hundred dollar bed that seemed like the last thing he wanted to be on. I brought him an automated toy laser thingie that he stopped caring for after 30 minutes, I brought him a usb powered dome that had fake rats poking in and out, I even got him a chink ipad with a scratch proof touch screen so he can play fruit ninja. At the end of the day, his favorite thing in the whole world is a piece of red ribbon that I tied to the side of my table.

You could try applying olive oil on the matted fur, apparently it softens the mats and the fur falls off on its own in a few days. Want to try this experiment?
I have no experience with hair clippers for pets, but what I would recommend is practicing on a wig or a stuffed animal before using it on your cat.

A bit of diarrhea, as well as puke, is normal even in cats with no health problems so it's hard to say.
Good thing you take him to the vet monthly, hopefully the vet can clear up your doubts.

Dirty as fuck litterbox? Clean it and see if he stops doing it.
If the box is fine, it could be a health related problem. Vet.

Any tips on integrating new cats in the household?
We've taken in two cats (1-2 years old) last weekend, however our old cat (18 years old) is very displeased with that.
The new ones act interested and friendly, but the old one just growls and hisses at them.
Is there any way to make them like each other?

Me again. He's now about a week old and seems to be doing fine. Will have to take care of him again on monday, and fed him from time to time on the last few days. His eyes have fully opened the same day as I posted the other posts, so quite early.
Eats readily, crawls alright and starts walking a little wobbly. Currently sleeping, he was purring a little before.
My friend told me that she didn't see him shit recently, and I tried to stimulate him and he only pissed (piss is clear). Sometimes he pisses inbetween feedings because I guess all the clothes in his cage might feel like a tongue to him, but it's hard to tell if he shat too as the amount would be so little it'd get lost in the amount of socks and stuff.
He otherwise doesn't seem bloated (his belly is soft), and does everything else alright. Just that I don't know if he shat in these last 24 hours. Am I being paranoid ?

I just accidentally ripped out a whisker while grooming my cats neck hair :((((((

Forcing a senior cat to share the house with not one, but TWO new cats is an asshole move. A cat so old will hardly adapt to new situations like this. You should have let it live the last years of its life in quietness and peace.
If it ever starts tolerating the new cats, don't expect them to necessarily get along.
Consider rehoming the cats if things don't go as planned.

Add another 12 hours to the 24 and if he still hasn't pooped ask for help
>>
>>4161799
Put toys out that he can play with alone. Like one of those balls at the end of a long spring connected to a firm base -- pic rel
>>
>>4161799

>>
>>4169331
Might be too late for that but introduce them progressively to each other (smelling thru door, each having their own space, etc). Old cat is sure to be displeased either way because he's old and it's his territory but he might tolerate them in a couple weeks.

>>4170429
My cat literally doesn't care for those. Random pieces of trash are great toys however.
