You can also reach out to your local stockyard and auction house to see when and if they have Goat days. You may need a premise ID, scrapie ear tags and a Vet bill of sale depending on laws in your area. Some people also directly with customers or slaughter facilities, but I do not. How viable are goats as a staple homestead animal to provide meat and milk to a family of 4 with very low input costs?I have 8 acres of brush. Will I be able to have red meat, milk, and cheese year round without providing food? We live in florida so there is vegetation year round

>>3967722Why do they smell so bad tho?
>>3968204the 25 goat herd budget I posted earlier here >>3965378 is actually for Florida. With 5/8 acres in use and a little cross fencing you could rotate quite a few goats easily, and still have land over for a garden/ orchard spot. It would provide you with meat/milk and supplemental income. That being said if you are if you are keeping the goats in milk you will want to supplement their diet with either a little alfalfa hay or some Perrinial peanut hay for calcium. My ranch is in north west Florida and I have to give hay from the end of December through the beginning of March. I would keep some anyway just to be safe.
Are (milk)goats suitable for mild tropics/sub-tropical climate? Not extremely hot but not lower than 10 Celcius in winter + a lot of rain (about 4 meters annually)Also, can goats eat fern?
>>3968582Bracken Fern is toxic to goats it will eventually make them ill and will probably give them diarrhea after a while. As far topical/subtropical it should be fine but you will have to watch for barber pole worms and hoof health a little more.

I actually went to a rancher class today that ended with a trip up to a goat ranch. Was interesting to see what that takes, and approximately how much cost they require, things like that. These were dairy goats too, seems that there is increasing demand in my area for meat goats. Still sort of puzzling things out as I look to buy land. Goats have become more attractive as a possibility though based on this visit and some reading.
>>3965365Don't be sour, udder you waiting for? This goat thread is GOAT (goat of animal thread). So hop on over because I'm extremely sleep deprived.
Goats are friends, not food
are llamas cool?
>>3968977If you are limited on land and trying to make money off of livestock I think goats are a solid choice with the way prices of wethers are trending at market. You can still keep a Nubian/lamancha or two in the herd for milking/ homesteading. That being said I know a lady who makes decent money from her dairy goats, but she has less land than I do and works much harder. Because she makes soaps, and other products and sells them at a store she owns/ farmer markets. >>3969060Not BAAAAd but you should have said, “Sleep Tight Kid” in the last thread and you wouldn’t be so tired.>>3969495https://www.thecoldwire.com/most-consumed-meats-in-the-world/>Goat is the most extensively consumed red meat on the planetI am sorry Anon…>>3970183https://www.shepherdsongfarm.com/llama-guardians-dogs-protectors/Tacticool attack Llamas are allowed into the herd.

>>3970203Yeah, part of the class was just discussing different markets and they really emphasized that where we live there's pretty high demand and low supply of goats. So that was interesting.I'm going to get 5-10 acres, reasonably far out. I know I'm going to have chickens, and otherwise have been reading about easier animals for a beginner. No grand ideas now, just looking to learn what I can and slowly build things up and figure out my interests while I'm still young. Goats have become increasingly of interest though as I've read more and more of them. Either for dairy or meat, they seem significantly less difficult than cows for dairy or meat. I'm still deep in the reading phase though. I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, and if I do start getting livestock I need to treat that as a serious commitment. Good stewardship is important.
I love goats. I love them as animals, I would love goats as pets, and I love hunting/eating goats. Except if they make a sad sound when I shoot them then it just makes me feel really bad :( Theyre so cute. I feel less bad shooting deer. I managed to shoot a couple of feral goats in the New Zealand woods, this week. Pic related. Got lots of very nice meat now.

GOATS ARE NOT STINKY I'm tired of hearing how goats smell, how sheep are better, and other such slander against them. Maybe if you looked further into it, you could see we're better than sheep at all aspects AND SMELL TOO, because only male (and horny male) goats could have even the remotely similar thing of "stinky" and female goats smell like THE ROSES THAT FLOW OFF AN ANGEL'S HAIR. If you petted goats you'd know
>>3975692Definitely don’t go over three unless you want to be deworming frequently. Goats need to be able to browse at roughly shoulder height to avoid worms, and that requires about an acre for every 2-3 goats. Seconding the other anon’s suggestion of La Mancha if you are going for milk. They are possibly the most relaxed goat breed, and they should be better suited for cold weather than a Nubian. I grew up on a goat farm in TN, and I miss every day. Always cool to see them discussed on /an/.

Got another wild goat today. Wild harvested goat, not farming but this is a goat thread so I will blogpost about hunting goat. The goats in this area I went to were very quiet, cunning, and VERY quick to run away if they sensed me. Was a good challenge. The goat I got was a young female, guessing young because of short horns. May not have been experienced enough to see me before I saw her. Will slow roast with bacon maybe. Picture is a bit morbid but wanted to show the eyes. Bright blue. Not sure if it is a mutt sort of goat or if it is a particular breed. Feral in New Zealand.
>>3987724My buck is a New Zealand Kiko and he has blue eyes like that. I grew up white tail deer hunting in Alabama so I can’t imagine it being too much different. Please share any good goat recipes you have come up with over the years. Pic rel when he was 9 months old
>>3987825The hunting style in New Zealand public land is usually bush stalking, which I think in American equates to still hunting. https://www.themeateater.com/hunt/big-game/still-hunting-techniquesA lot of sneaking around as quietly as possible until you find animals. Usually the animals sense me first and the only thing I hear is an animal crashing away in the distant trees lol. But today after 6 hours of climbing around I finally encountered a goat that didn’t sense me first so I got her. She was quiet as a ghost and I wouldn’t have known she was around if I wasn’t paying attention. Had to quarter her in the field and carry her out up a steep hill. It was a good workout, frustrating, but felt really good. We have whitetail in a couple of isolated places in New Zealand , but our most widespread species is red deer which are very large animals. Kinda intimidating. As for goat recipes, Indian or southeast Asian curries usually deliver. I also love goat rendang, goat burger, sup kambing (usually with mutton but traditionally with goat https://youtu.be/THWj1sezDAw) , standard western stews, made into sausages, or just roasted. I like goats. I would pay to go to a park or farm just to play with goats. I want a goat pack animal friend to go with me on hikes. Would love to farm goats if I ever get the chance. Some of the goat milk farms here look really modern. Don’t think I will ever be able to afford machines like that though. https://youtu.be/koByJEzOefA

>>3987935Goat milk is really expensive here, two or three times or so the price of those fancy plant milks. Even moreso if powdered into milk powder or baby formula. China seems to be a big buyer of goat milk, and recently sheeps milk. Not sure if goat meat is in high demand in New Zealand. Apparently we have a shitty supply chain issue for goat. Maybe demand will increase and supply chains will strengthen when we take in more muslim immigrants kek. I only recently saw a new brand of sausages appear in our stores which uses goat. Pic related looks pretty good. There needs to be more propaganda around on how great goat meat is. Also only just recently found out that 'goatober' is a thing, which seems to be about spreading the word on goat meat.

>>4022627I don’t know anything about goat breeds and farming, why are boers frustrating?
>>4022628They have benefits which is why people raise them. The problems are: >they have low instincts and bad mothers >don’t handle barber pole worms as well as Spanish and Kiko goats so they don’t do as well in the Deep South>Since their horns grow backwards instead of out full grown goats can get their head stuck into fences>larger breed needs more feed (sneed)The benefits:>Larger breed and being the premier meat goat gets you a better price per head>breed that can get you two kiddings in a year if nutrition goals are metIf I lived out west or up ((north)) or had less goats I would be interested in going to boer goats because the profit per goat can be better. You just have to worm them more often, and are more likely stuck with a bottle baby or two if you get a bunch of triplets.
>>4022628>>4022644In my experience, all the things that that poster said but also, they tend to be more aggressive. Especially the bucks. Not in the "they are always aggressive" sense but more that they will be super chill but if you turn your back on them or are bringing out a scoop of feed you can not let your guard down around them. Come feeding time theres a 50/50 chance that Im going to need to wrestle with one of them. My spanish goats though, absolute pleasure. The thing about it is that spanish goats are flighty, very paranoid. So, you can get them to trust you but they still respect and show caution to you. I have never had a spanish goats horns touch me unless I initiated it. Boers act super friendly but they also do not respect you. And with spanish goats if you interact with them from birth they arent flighty my two youngest are like puppies. Another thing ive noticed is boers get a real dopey look in their eyes once they mature, spanish do not. Also, when in rut boers get extremely rutty. Complete fucking slobs. Spanish bucks are more refined in that sense. The one drawback for spanish is they mature slowly. A spanish buckling will take at least a year before hes actually ready to breed. Even if kept in with does he probably wont even try until hes ready, they have a much longer puberty stage. Same with the does. And, they grow nice and good til 6 months but slow down a bunch from there. A 2 year old doe is like half the size of a mature doe. So from a production standpoint theres zero point in waiting more than 6 months to slaughter.

I can not go into my goat paddock without keeping a keen eye on the boers. The moment Im walking forward without my eye on any of them behind me I will get horns in the back. So far Ive lucked out and its never been enough to hurt me but still it was enough for me to learn my lesson. Boers were the first goats that I got, I really enjoyed them until one day they became a problem. They are destined for the freezer now. Too much of a risk. And like I said, my spanish goats are nothing like that at all. Theyve never once done anything even remotely risky. Boers pack on a little more meat, and they are easier to do maintenance on, thats the only benefits that they have. But the meat difference isnt enough to get excited about and while maintenance is easier on boer, spanish goats really dont need any maintenance. Trimming their hooves is a nightmare, but it also does not need to be done, they probably wouldnt do too well in a confined pen but given a decent sized paddock they can be entirely left alone aside from giving feed if they eat all the plants. The only actual drawback to spanish goats is if they develop a mineral deficiency they will absolutely not touch any minerals offered, have to sneak it into their pellet trough and they will eat around most of it so gotta mix it up real good.
I have an okay-sized suburban yard and would like to have a goat. Yes, it sounds cruel, but I remember being on ranches with smaller pens than my yard and the goats seemed fine (they were pygmies of course). Obviously this would be illegal but no one would ever find out. I'm planning on building a nice, comfy barn and I'm going to move into it with my goat. I will abandon electricity and use a pump for watering me and my goat. We will snuggle up in the cold and cool off in the shade during summers and frolick the limited space all day. This is the only way I imagine a goat can be socially satisfied without getting a companion. I must... become the goat. I am autistic and money is not an issue, bills are paid automatically, and the feed and sneed is plentiful and cheap where I live. I have a book, Storey's guide to dairy goats, and after a cursory browsing, it seems doable.Questions to anons: what breed? Can I get away with a full-size breed like a Nubian (they remind me of Natalie Portman)? Their milk would be plentiful. I'd pay a local farmer to stuff her womb and when the kid is weaned sell it on the black market. If I must have a pygmy considering my yard size, I understand. Also, what kind of human-goat diseases are transmissible (not sexually you freaks)? I don't mind getting a cough, but I wouldn't to spread something weird to the goat. Also, I don't want worms. I would not necessarily drink from her trough and I don't think I could survive off of hay.
>>4027170There has got to be a better use for your time surely?
>>4027615Well I also play the clarinet, and there's a lot of clay in the ground where I live so I could spend time making pots, and it would take some time storing milk safely and making cheese. So I wouldn't spend 100% of the time with the goat, but more like 90-95. Can goats learn tricks? I'd like to teach it to dance when I play the clarinet. I might make money at farmer's markets with a dancing goat show.

>>4017056>>4018123Sharing these with the thread. Thanks for posting >>4028648having animals around makes life more interesting
>>4028656Okay, I think a dancing goat isn't impossible then. I foresee it being more of a "prance" than a dance, though.>>4028648I recommend reading Storey's guide to dairy goats. It has very in depth info.https://b-ok.cc/book/2225165/ee2cceIf I remember correctly, there is no one best breed. I think it has something to do with how some breeds lactate more in one session than others but have shorter producing windows. There is also the factor to consider of how often they can get pregnant as well as weaning the kid. Nubians seemed like ideal and balanced breeds but the dwarf and pygmy goats are much better for small dwellings.Oh, don't forget that dairy goats don't produce very good mohair, and if you want to homestead, you need a source of self-reliant clothing, which a lot of people overlook. If you live by a river, you can build a water wheel that powers a mill for flour or a loom for spinning. I'd specialize in one or the other and live near another homesteader who you can barter and trade with. You don't have to but it would be easier. Look into sheep as well, especially those falkland ones, meroe or merool or whatever.I'm no expert, just trying to remember exactly what I read without checking. Just download the book and read it, it's not that long and has lots of cool drawings.
>>4027170>>4027652I laughed way too hard at this Natalie Portman pic you sperg

>>4032970Those are curious horns, btw
>>4033000>>4033001Yea it’s awesome. I was gonna open a restaurant but went this direction instead. He is my buck for the herd so he will have larger horns and he is still growing

My neighbors have a shitload of goats making a bunch of shit. Should I be concerned about goat shit getting in the water?
>>4036499No goat poop makes great fertilizer you should ask them for some.
>>4036475Is that goat injured? Legs+hips seem wonky
>>4037118She is fine, she was scratching herself and then she heard something, so she was standing in this dorky stance and I had to take a photo. I snapped this photo this morning of her. legs and hips are fine, but as you can tell by her face she is incapable of taking a serious photo.
Is it hard to get to ever have a comfortable life with goats if you don't have any kind of inheritance that includes goats and big earth extensions?
>>4038036No it’s very easy(assuming you are good with your money and don’t mind taking on the work and responsibilities), most goat ranches in America are 5 acres and under, generate income and are considered “part time” with the owners still working elsewhere. If working with goats is what you want to do then make the life changes to get to there.
>>4038659Please don’t be this way anon
Goats are thankful for the Florida browse

Is it feasible to have a ranch consisting solely of female goats for milking? I don't really like the whole "male goats pissing on themselves" thing, and I also heard milk goats are also good for meat
>>4045966Yes and no, Nubian and other large milking breeds will be fine for meat. You are going to want one buck to breed your females to keep them in milk. Also the young males you sell at 6 months old and 50lbs banded into wethers and they won’t be pissing on themselves like that
