I got a shy cat a month ago and she's finally starting to warm up to me. Sits on the couch a few feet away from me at night, will eat treats from my hand, and even comes out of hiding during the day sometimes. But I've started hearing her nails clicking on the floor so she needs her nails trimmed, but cats hate it and I don't want to lose all that progress and she'll be scared of me again. What's the best way to do it?

I was thinking of getting a cat muzzle (shelter manager said it helps keep them calm during) and maybe wrapping her in a blanket. Just don't know how I'll even capture her, since if I do anything but try to pet her or feed her while she's lying calm on the couch she gets spooked.

The last cat I had I raised from a kitten so even if she didn't like getting her nails clipped, she was easy to capture to clip her nails since she would even let me cradle her in my arms on her back like a baby.

An anon said cats will pull them/chew them out when they get too long but she hasn't done that yet after a week more, and the scratching posts and pads don't trim them that much.

My cat isn't shy, but my family will just put her on her back in our laps, and trim her nails with a small nail clipper, the kind you'd use on your fingers. Maybe try to associate nail trimming with food or something she likes?

These two little cute astray siblings (white is m, dark is f) were rescued by my mom about a month ago. They could barely walk, they were practically newborn it seems. We've taken them to the vet and he says they are completely fine, gave em some antiparasitic shot but other than that they look pretty healthy. I'm going to take them again in a month for some extra routine checkups and whatnot. Moms been feeding them some specialized milk in a baby bottle.

They can't stay with her because she already has 3 dogs, which don't trust to socialize with them, so they are going to stay with me at my place, and I've never had cats. I know the basics about scratchers, toys, food, litter boxes... But what tips would you tell a total cat newbie?

I'm gonna call them coffee and milk.

Simple names, but very cute.
Put them inside one room that they won't leave until they have settled into the house and gotten used to the noises and to human presence; the room has to have their food and water bowls, a litter box (you can use a cardboard with low sides for now), and an access to an area where they can hide (like the space between the wall and a bookcase, or an out of sight corner), because trust me they ARE going to hide all day for the first few days, no reason to be worried about that, it's normal. Oh, the litter box has to be placed far from the bowls.
Let them explore one room at a time when they are ready. Don't leave potentially dangerous small objects around they could chew and swallow.
If they don't feel like peeing and pooping for the first couple days it may be due to anxiety, it is important that they stay hydrated.
This site lists pretty much all the advices I usually give to new cat owners so please check it out: https://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/bringing-your-new-cat-home

Get down from there Cricket!

My dad feeds Cricket whenever she meows, and now she meows constantly for food, which irritates my dad who then yells at her and chases her with a spray bottle. And then he goes and fills up her food dish. I've tried to tell my parents that they need to only put food in the dish once in the morning and once in the evening, but then my dad complains that the cat keeps complaining. It upsets me that they are on their fourth cat and make no effort to learn what not to do with a cat.
Mojave and Oreo were let outside, without a collar whenever they wanted and both were killed by coyotes.
Mocha was throwing up for half a year before my mom took her to the vet and they discovered a stomach tumor.
Now Cricket is being taught bad feeding habits.

What is the optimal cat skull shape? I have 2 cats that are siblings. One has what I would describe as a slight underbite appearance, even though his teeth align well and not in an actual underbite. I guess his chin is big or something. But from a profile view it looks like how an underbite looks on a human. His brother does not have that, and his face is much softer. The former cat has a slightly wider and higher face and a flatter top of the head/forehead. The latter cat has a "cuter" appearance."

When you want to change your cat's diet and eating schedule you do it gradually, not overnight.

I saw online that you should feed ~60cal for each lb of kitten body weight but ~250 and ~360 calories seems like a LOT.

360 calories is like almost 4 small cans of wet food a day. I guess I could do 1/2 cup of dry food and 2 small 3oz cans? Still seems like a lot jesus. How can a kitten need 360 when humans can do alright on 1200??

Literally all they do in the street is get run over, piss in bushes and become a bigger cats bitch.

You have a walled in garden, it can get fresh air, dig in dirt, roll around in the grass, the cat will be plenty content with that.

Is fancy feast really that bad? catfooddb.com gives it's 6/10 which is pretty average and does not seem bad at all. the first few ingredients are meat which is good, but i know that it also involves "meat byproduct" but I eat bologna myself I don't get why it's really bad. also purina does a lot of research on their products, more so than other companies.

Noice, if you're used to cats and you have the time and money, go for it. Have a watch of Jackson Galaxy's vids, he's got some pretty good starter vids for new owners, I've had a cat in the past but there were a few good pointers I found useful when I got my kitter recently. Also leash training. Even if you decide to let them be an outdoor cat, it's still great for them to be able to come for walks with you. You can go camping and backpacking with them and all sorts

Need some more advice on my shy cat >>3919402, bros

She fell asleep for a little bit on the couch right next to me last night, so she's getting used to me. But she only mostly comes out at night and hides the rest of the day under my covers. And even when she comes out at night, she gets spooked by me unless I'm sitting down on the couch. If I'm standing or walking she darts away from me. And if she's sitting on the couch and I get up to go get something, she runs away when I sit back down.

How do I get her to come out more during the day and how do I get her to not be so scared of me when I'm standing/walking?

She's aa cute black lady, and I'm sure she's happy to be with you. May I ask you what prompted you to get a cat if you are still studying?
The problem is that I'm fostering 2 kittens; today a 22 yo unistud contacted me, they are interested in one of them and are coming tomorrow to see him.
Maybe I'm excessively worried but unistuds are so young, they don't have their future figured out yet. Also if they live far from their hometown, they decide to get a pet to feel less lonely or as a status symbol of self-sufficiency. Can they take proper care of a pet? Will they get tired overtime?
A person from a non-profit organization that helped me in the past told me that more often than not they refuse to give cats away to uni students because in their experience they faced many problems afterwards (there are exceptions of course).
I'm conflicted because these 2 lil fuckers are a big commitment for me, but I don't want to give them to the first applicant that shows up.

A short answer to all of that is: wait and let her be confortable enough to do it all by herself.
You can continue to be friendly while respecting her spaces, in the hope she loosens up. Play with her, even if she's scared by close contact, use strings or cat dancers which you can use from a distance.
It takes more time to soften up adult cats, don't expect to achieve all your goals.
I wouldn't try to get her nails clipped now, it would stress her and invalidate the attempts to win her trust. As anons said, she can do it herself, also scratching posts (and patience) will do.
>>
>>3921639
Some cats actually prefer hard surfaces to lay in. I had a cat that would never sleep in the cat beds but if I gave him a plain wicker basket he'd crawl right in it and fall asleep. If you have one it's worth a try.

Sorry for late-ish reply.

I understand your worry. They are living creatures and need to be taken care of properly. I might not have every step of my life figured out yet but I have enough money in the bank to sustain me (and my cat) for at least a year if anything were to happen. She's heavily insured too, so unexpected medical costs are no worry of mine.

I also have a very nice neighbour who's always willing to look after her if I need to be away for longer than usual. I don't know how uni works in your country, but for me it's pretty chill. 90% of the lectures are digital (they were digital even before the pandemic) so most of the time I'm studying from home. I've been to uni maybe two days a week on average the last three years, and only for like 4-5 hours those days.

Hopefully the students that are interested in your kitten are mature enough to understand what it takes.

One thing I'd check though is how they live. If they live at a dorm or something like that it might not be big enough for a cat. I have my own apartment so that's not an issue for me.
>>
>>3919402
I don't think I can give GOOD advice, but maybe someone can verify or vilify what I say. When I was a kid we had a cat who was very difficult when it came to trimming nails. I found a solution the cat was fine with.

First, take cat nail scissors. When you see your sleeping cats exposed paws, gently press that first knuckle to expose the nail, and trim it. When you're starting to do this, just dull the nail. The closer you get to the cuticle the more the cat will notice. I have completely trimmed all my cats nails, even moving the paws around, without my cat ever noticing. Sometimes he slept very deeply.

Ideally, you trim all of them, but here's the kicker. If you touch a cats dew claw they are going to notice. Leave them for last and do it fast, but close to the tip.

It was pretty common for me to get the fingers but not the thumb as it were. I was trimming his claws to minimize damage to furniture and also himself, as he would get his claws snagged on things and sometimes hurt himself. But damn, accidental dew claw damage gave my dad a scar he has to this day.

Anyway, he never threw a fit if I stopped when we woke up. If we tried when we was awake he'd act like we were kidnapping him.

Maybe they didn't explain it well to you, or you got confused.
Two color cats can be either boys or girls. Cats with a tri-colored coat (calicos) are almost exclusively females. Tortoiseshell cats are an exceptions, they are cats with two colors but are rarely males.

Sounds like yours was an ideal premise to get a cat and offer her a great life.
Maturity and awareness are what a lot of students still lack when it comes to adopting pets, they don't imagine what it entails, which is why these organizations prefer families or even a single adult who has a stable job and a secure income, over uni or college students that often are just fulfilling a whim. Sure, their lifestyle and financial resources are an important thing to check as well. I would never ever give a cat to someone at a dorm.

Thankfully it all went well, after talking with them I'm convinced that they are a responsible person. We talked a lot, I asked all sorts of questions. They agreed to send me updates and pics of the kitten in the coming months.
I'll try to have some faith and be less biased against certain categories.

So I just adopted two 5-month old baby boys, they are brothers. they got neutered at the shelter two days ago, and then i picked them up and brought them home.

i have never had kittens of my own before, and so i'm admittedly a little nervous. Kot1 is very outgoing and rambunctious; it feels like he has infinite energy to play. Kot2 is more shy and reserved but very sweet.

I'm a little worried about Kot2 though, because he seems VERY lazy. he eats, drinks, poops and pees with no problem. but he spends most of his time either sleeping or just sitting there as a cat loaf. with a lot of coaxing i can get him to play a bit, but most of the time he would rather watch Kot1 chase the toys. my girlfriend has had many kittens in her life and she says he just seems chill to her, but i'm paranoid that he might be unwell. should i be worried?

Are they not showing signs of stress for being transferred to a new place? Most cats do.
Maybe kot2is just a bit dazed from the recent neutering and the new house, and prefers to be cautious before joining his brother. I assume other than the neutering, the vets did a check up? You shouldn't worry. Give him some time.

Don't know what to do with my cat bros. I recently had to go back to work in the office after working from home for 18 months. My cat is almost 18 years old, and he has serious separation anxiety now. Almost every time I come home he has shit in the house, he meows constantly, sometimes all night so I can't sleep well. He was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last year and we treated him with medicine for about 6 months, but the vet told us it wasn't making any difference so we stopped. Don't know what to do, he seems really stressed all the time, and it's becoming a strain on me too. Any suggestions?

Well, when my first cat got to be 18~, she had issues with going a bit senile and pissing just outside of the catbox. It's unfortunate, but that's a pretty long time for a cat to live. There's not too much you can do besides making the best of the time you have left.

There haven't been so many husky-eats-baby cases in the past decade even though they've gotten more popular. Are people starting to catch on to the "intelligent, energetic animals need more attention" thing or are they just keeping them separate now? The last case I heard of, the woman kept all her dogs in crates most of the time and rotated them out in pairs so they could sit in her window and bark.

Since the last post, the cat has eaten more spring rolls.
It has also eating unthawed, frozen meatballs.
The cat did not want to eat 2 fresh dead pigeons. I killed the pigeons because they had adult feathers but could not fly. It is odd that the cat would rather eat kibble, because birds are a normal prey animal for cats.

I once read that slowly blinking to cats it's like telling them you love them, I think mine does it (either that or just can't help herself from falling asleep slowly) but every time I do it she ignores me or looks away, did they just make that shit up or what?
>>

>>
Okay, so, my cat just ate a 2cm of chicken bone with cartilage included before I could pull the full bome out. So far he's acting fine. Didn't choke or anything. As active as usual. But from what I've read online, I'm freaking out. Should I be worried? I already called vet, but they told me I shouldn't bring my cat to clinic and instead should pay for vet to come home and check on him. What do I do? Wait until he goes to poop? Call the vet? Go to the clinic?
>>
>>3925121
It is said that looking a cat in the eyes for a long time (even if you blink) is considered a form of menace. Look at them, blink and break eye contact. Repeat.
Ultimately it's cats that decide when it's time to blink back to return their love, deal with it.

>>3925171

You have been lucky. He could have parasites, treat them.

>>3925272
How many hours have passed since when he ate the bone? Was it sharp? In the worst case scenario it could block or even pierce his intestine. This is no joke, better safe than sorry so bring him to a vet.
>Wait until he goes to poop?
Technically yes but it might be too late and bones are dangerous. Go to the clinic.
>>
>>3925314
Went to vet. She said he seemed good, but told me to monitor his condition closely and that he might experience blood in feces, but also told me to not worry too much because only in rarest cases cats tear their stomach with bone. Also, don't think it was too sharp. Still worried though, but a bit relieved after listening to professional

I can't say I've seen anything else online saying not to let your cat even drink after spaying/neutering, though it would probably be best to not give him too much, as the cat's stomach may be upset. Also, you should probably let him rest on a bed low to the ground, preferably on the floor so he doesn't get injured trying to move around. might be a decent idea to not use regular litter for a bit to reduce the chances of anything getting in the incision site.
>>
>>3925895
Yes, it is normal. However my cat didn't have to stay that many hours without food and water post-surgery; vet told me to give him food and water when I would have woken up the next day (the neutering was in the afternoon, and when I went to the clinic to pick him up it was like 7 PM). I remember I woke up earlier (around 5:30) to refill his bowls, and everything went right. So in the end his post-suegery with no water and food lasted for ~12 hours.
>>
>>3923733

>he also threw up earlier
What's wrong with him? Anything I can do for him until I can get him to a vet?
>>
>>3926331
Did you not notice anything weird in his behavior before you found the liquid?
He might have eaten something bad or toxic for cats that's giving him this reaction.
Best is to not stress him too much. Leave him alone and go to the vet asap. Post updates.

My old lady cat did that as well as the male we had with her. She about a month ago, out of all the animals of my childhood she was the last one standing. She always slept right next to my head. I miss her a lot.

He didn't seem to be acting off at all. He was trying to rub his face against my legs when I noticed the stuff hanging off his butt and then he began acting really energetic and maybe a little panicky after it was cleaned off and he was also a bit warm as if he had a fever. He seems to be doing a lot better now - his butt's not bleeding everywhere, he's not freaking out, he doesn't feel as feverish as he did, and he hasn't thrown up again.
I wouldn't be surprised if he ate something he shouldn't have, but it's also worth noting the problematic area seemed to be to the side of the rectum, moreso on his inner thigh than his asshole. I did notice some stuff sticking to his butt a few days ago, but it didn't look bloody like it did yesterday.
Hopefully I'll be able to get him to the vet today.

Hi anons, I take care of a litter of strays in my area (3 kittens and their mom, it used to be 4 kittens but one of them disappeared).

They're all used to me and play with me often but this black kitten is the most friendly and follows me everywhere even after he's eaten. I was intending to adopt him but he disappeared this Monday and hasn't come back since. I'm starting to get worried he's not coming back ever since he's a stray and a little sad I might not see him again. Should I try looking for him or just leave it and hope he just became independent?

>Old cat is losing weight
>Find tapeworms in stool, treat for tapeworms
>Cat gets better, then decides to stop eating one day
>Runs out the door and goes to hide, can't find cat
>Search everywhere, can't find him
>He shows back up the next day, just laying in the middle of the yard
>Still won't eat
>Take him to the vet, fully expecting he was developing liver failure or something fatal, terrified I'll have to put him down
>Wait for hours expecting the worse

>Get told after a blood test that he's negative for lukemia and FIV, liver is doing ok, kidneys are ok, they sent off another sample to a bigger vet with better equipment
>They guess it's a bloodbourne parasite, but that was deconfirmed after the other blood test comes back
>Only indication of something is an elevated cell count that points to a long term infection, which is a treatable condition
>Leave the office giddy as can be since my cat will likely be alive for quite a while, so long as I can get him to eat again

I'm having to force feed him with a syringe and give him pills twice daily, but he's doing well with both. Has anyone here had to force feed a cat before? I've only done it once a few years back and that cat started eating on her own again very quickly, but it seems like this guy might take a little longer.

He keeps looking at his food, maybe licks the gravy off of it or licks up some chicken broth but won't eat anything solid (Except for the occasional cat treat, I guess he still can't resist one or two of those no matter how bad he feels). I was hoping someone could give me an ancedote of how long it took for their cat to start eating on their own again, I only have the other cat to go by and she was only around 6 years old while this one is almost 12.

Even though no one knows what's wrong with him, I'm just happy the major bad things that are untreatable seem to be off the table.

Unfortunately no, it won't grow back into a clean edge. Most of my cats
I've only had barn cats
wound up with some minimal damage to their ears. One of my current cats has a 1/4" slit on her ear from a fight with a neighbor cat, but it doesn't bother them one bit. I wouldn't feel too bad but just be more careful in the future.
>>
>>3928104
I have the opposite problem, my kot is obsessed with food. No idea which is better in the long run, if a cat that eats too much or a cat that doesn't want to eat. (Inb4 take your cat to a vet - he was tested by 3 vets who all agreed it's psychological).
Anyway I'm glad your cat is fine. It's a big accomplishment to be able to help your cat with the appropriate therapy. There are conditions that remain a mystery and can't be properly treated, therefore they naturally worsen.
I can't give you useful advices but I wanted to say that, also props to you for the commitment.

I started giving my cats those squeeze packets of chicken puree and they love them more than any other treat I've ever given them.

I was wondering, because these things are so expensive, could I just get cheaper jars of baby food that have way more puree in them and give them that instead? It has to be pretty much the same stuff, right?

All my cats are old too, it's hard when you have spend most of your life with these animals and suddenly they're gone, especially when you go to bed and they're no longer sitting next to you...

RIP to your friend.

Fuck cancer too. I lost one cat to breast cancer 2 years ago, extremely rare in a spayed cat but she still managed to get it somehow. Knew as soon as I felt the lump on her stomach what it was...

The other cat got advanced liver cancer and she declined so fucking fast, and just stopped eating food entirely and that's when I knew it was time to let her go.

I'm an eastern yuro living in a commie block jungle. Nobody has outdoor cats here. We don't live in houses in suburbs you see in the US for example. I was actually trying to be funny, but in reality there was a storm and the cat was meowing cuddled up in the corner. Went to check on it and it didn't want to leave me, so I just snagged it. You guys should know cats are based and clean animals. It was scruffy when I got it, but after one week of feeding it did it's own thing and is now silky smooth. Didn't wash her or anything.

Cats cost money.

It's responsible to not have more then you can care for.

I believe at least 2 is humane bc people have jobs and cats are home alone all day, but damn some people just cannot afford a second, much more even care for 2.

Hitlerina is 4 years old and shows no signs of slowing down. Still asks me to play catch up and hide and seek. It doesn't work most of the times anymore because she hides at a place I can't get her and stays there until I leave and then appears inviting me to do the same thing again. Need advice on my cat as I'm a first time cat owner. My cat has been throwing up her food lately I think I'm over feeding her. But she's not really.. Fat? She's just a lil chunky. But recently I cut back on her food and she lost a ton of weight. Nothing unhealthy she still has the conk but she's just way lighter than I remembered.. Question is do you guys have like a strict diet for your cats and if so how is it? I literally just dump more food when her food is gone.
>>
>>3929344
I can't really help you. I'm a first time cat owner myself and she is only 6 months old.
I just really like fat cats, i just want to hug them lol

Anyway, i feed her breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same hours as i eat. She then has a bowl filled with dry food that she snack in between meals, and during the night.
Then it depends, on some days she might eat a lot, but then int he following days she will eat much less, and then eat normal again for soem days.
After she eats, if she is still hungry, she wil climb to the table and try to eat some of my or other people's food, if she's not hungry, she will leave the kitchen and lie down on the couch.
>>
>>3929309
Fucking gayass flower. Good thing I'm not a fag and never have flowers at home. If my cat died to a flower I'd kill myself.
>>
I have always loved cats until we got a new kitten. I despise him but everyone in my house loves him. I want to get rid of him so bad. He pees all over my room (but nowhere else in the house), destroys all paper he sees (things I have on my bulletin board and homework have all been completely destroyed), he eats plants and constantly needs to be sprayed and yelled at, he's constantly going where's he's not supposed to be like on tables and on the stove top, and he's super aggressive. He'll jump and attack your leg when you walk past him through the hallway and all night he'll run and jump all over my dad's bedroom and scratch him during the night. He's not allowed in my room because I'm sick and tired of him. We have two other cats, an 11-year-old cat who's extremely well behaved and a 1-year-old cat who was a stray up until 5 or 6 months ago who is way better behaved. The problem cat is 5 or 6 months old and is the son to the stray cat. What do I do about him? I despise him and desperately want to get rid of him.
>>
>>3929298
Can a cat die from just sniffing a toxic flower? All you can do is to keep an eye on him for the next hours, don't make other plans for the day.

>>3929344
Initially I used to refill the bowls when I saw them empty, I believe this made them addicted to food now that they are old kots.
I learned to schedule-feed them with a chart to set the correct daily dose based on the weight. Quality of food is also important, try not to use cheap commercial brands and don't vary once you've found what is suited for her.

>>3929371
First off you put the important stuff you don't want him to destroy in a drawer or a cabinet.
Second: buy a specific enzyme cleaner to remove the piss odor/stains. Even if you don't smell it anymore, the uric acid lasts for a long time and the kitten can detect it. It's the only way if you want him to stop peeing in your room. Simultaneously, tell your family to teach him how to use the litter in a correct way.
Third, be patient. Some young cats are mcat that was a little ore energetic than others.
My current cat is a former little devil, my mother even went as far as suggesting to put him up for adoption but I insisted on waiting; one year later he did a 180 - he's not so cuddly, but he's a chill and quiet cat that hurts no one.
>>
>>3929580
>Some young cats are mcat that was a little ore energetic than others.
whoops
Some young cats are more energetic than others*
>>
>>3929580
Thanks for the enzyme stuff, I'll get that. We have a ridiculous amount of plants though, no matter how high we put them he finds a way to parkour his way up to eat them. He's not neutered yet if that makes a difference.
>>
>>3929598
Oh yeah definitely, neuter him. He's around 6 months old, right? Time to get him neutered. It'll sensibly reduce the territorial behavior.
