My cat outsmarted me, he just never gets tired of meowing until I run behind him.

How do I make him stop this, I'm too busy, he thinks it's funny, I thought he would get tired after a few times, but he literally just plays with my nerves until he goes to sleep.

i just got an 8 week old american bob tail for free from some amish, shes the runt but very spunky, shes currently sleeping on my shoulder, any tips for a first time kitten owner? ive had cats but they were rescues and never this small
>>
>>3861852
How old? He must be quite young. This is typical kitten behavior. He'll calm down when he's a bit older.
Don't ignore him. Dedicate a small portion if your time every day to play with him. If he doesn't run out of energy so easily, a cat tree will stimulate him to continue playing alone (a cat tree is still not a substitute to a playmate, don't get the wrong idea).
>>
>>3862566
I guess she already eats solid food. Get specific kitten food. Kittens are constantly hungry because they grow up fast, so guarantee her frequent meals every time she wants to eat (it's when they adult and fixed that you schedule their meals).
Have you seen a vet yet? First visit is mandatory. She needs to be vaccinated and probably dewormed and treated with anti-fleas assuming she hasn't been already treated by you or the previous owner.
Can she use the litter box? It won't be hard to learn for a kitten.
Get her some toys and play with her every day.
>>
>>3862596
we go to the vet in 6 days moneys tight or id of done it when i got her, the amsih gave me food to give her but it looks like generic meow mix, shes just been eating that and the wet food, shes already plumping up in the few days ive had her i dont think they took good care of her she was under their house when i got her they had to go look for her, i dont see any fleas
yes she uses the litter box i was surprised, my other animals are adjusting to her, especially my other cat, but shes been great

this little lady here is kot Misha

i think she's become antisocial towards anyone but me
she gets really afraid of/aggresive towards strangers unless they carry food, she even hissed at my parents even though they've visited multiple times in the course of 2 years

im a single man living alone and i was wondering if that was part of the "problem"? would her behaviour still continue if i move in with someone else in the future?

How do I know what my kitten's personality will be like as he ages? If I found him stray at 7 weeks, can I be sure the gains I've made in acclimating him to human contact will persist?
>>
>>3862566
feed wetfood. Save yourself the vetbills and heartache, feed wet food. Play with her using toys now. Cats lose interest in them if they didnt really play with stuff as a kitten. Itll make it harder to entertain her when she's older if you dont. Get two litter boxes are one very large box eventually. Im talking like 3 feet long

I cant remember if bobtails have balancing issues but i'd be careful about open top aquariums and high places she can fall from

Update on the pregnant cat from last thread, the one that was coughing after giving birth
>Stopped coughing about 4 days ago
>Found her kittens this morning, they were literally 25 feet from my window in a hidden spot in my neighbor's yard
>Got the mom into a cage with some food, put all of the kittens into a separate cage
>Got them in my car and drove them down to the head of the local animal rescue's house which is right down the road from me
>She's now there in a nice cage with food, a litterbox, and some platforms, along with all of her babies
Pic related is her with her kittens, she had 5 total! Even in a strange environment she was extremely well-behaved and didn't hiss or anything like that, just walked over to her babies and laid down. I'm so relieved that she's in good hands and will be spayed/vaccinated now along with her kittens. Guaranteed to find good homes. I got the good ending guys, fuck yes I'm so fucking happy.

It's impossible to tell what he'll be like when he's a full adult cat. Your kitty is very young though, his personality is shaping. Of course the environment he grows up in and every interaction with you and other people will contribute to it to some extent.

I have an indoor cat who is about 14. For many years, every time he's managed to slip outside he immediately began eating grass only to come back inside and throw it up later. He's also tried eating fake house plants before. All we feed him is dry pellets, is there something I could give him to curb his appetite for grass? I dont want to deprive him of somethint he thinks he needs.

One of my cats turns into an aggressive dipshit every other day for no goddamn reason. She also keeps escaping despite my fruitless attempts to make her indoor only. What do I do? does she even like me? She was originally a street cat. Will she always love the hood more than her warm home with food, toys and love? It doesn't make any sense. I feel like I've been wasting so much time, energy and money on this fucking cunt.
>>
>>3864354
also, she just escaped and it's 59º degrees outside. I've chased her around like an idiot and she won't come in

spay her. Territoriality stops without a uterus to fill

also note there's nothing more enriching than the world. You're going to have to make home more interesting if you want her to stop trying to escape

1. Leave her alone when shes aggressive. She doesnt want to be fucked with, respect that and shell like you more.
2.stop letting her escape. Each time she gets out is one more note in her brain that its possible to leave. Stop letting that happen
3. Enrich her environment. Cat trees, multiple hiding spots. puzzle toys with treats inside, play with her with a feather toy if thats her thing. Dont make her only entertainment be you. She was a street cat, shes used to not needing a human around to entertain herself
4. Cat Vices. Get some cat grass to grow in the windowsill. Put some mice/quail in a sealed aquarium for a makeshift cat TV. Catnip and silvervine on occasion. Make it worthwhile to sit in your house all day
>>
>>3864360

Do you think there is a certain effect on a kitten's personality when they are born in the wild vs in captivity? If you take 100 kittens from the wild and raise them to be housecats, do you think you would notice a trend from the ones born inside?

I only had 2 cats, the one I loved was born in captivity but she passed away. Our other cat I'm not sure of, but I don't like her as much. She is affectionate but far more high-strung. I want another cat but I don't want a high-strung cat.
>>
>>3865311
Cats that aren't socialised early are INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT. They are far more independent and wild, cats have different personalities anyway but this is a marked difference. Cats that reach adulthood unsocialised will never reach the level of affection and interaction, and honestly will be basically a wild animal.

Also when do they finally chill the fuck out? I saw a cat at a store 7 months of age and she was so mellow and lounging around.

They'll chill out when they choose. My Bombay didn't chill until a few years old and he can still be insane but less of the time. As for size depends on breed and her parents, though often a general size idea can be gained by how big their paws are. Not a rule because this one is tiny and her paws are massive.

Why does my cat like ice cream so much?
I'm not an ice cream guy but I saw some on sale and decided "what the hell I'll get some" yesterday. Well I'm eating some right now and he is obsessing over it. He's in my face and I just put him down on the ground and he jumps right back up to try and get a lick in. He's acting like it's fresh meat and he's starving to death. Well not that bad, I'm glad he isn't one of those deviant sneaky cats - he's pretty well behaved and knows when food is mine vs his. He does like to come and try to sniff and eat some of my food but he usually cautiously approaches unless I intervene.
Anyway, my point is he's obsessing over this ice cream more than he does with regular food I eat. Why does he even care about ice cream at all? He's a carnivore. Would it even provide any nutritional value to him? He's like 13 months old.
>>
>>3866220
What was it? I've had to give my cat pills and liquids in syringes but he never stayed mad afterwards, maybe pouted an hour or something, although now I've gotten the hang of pills where I can just sneak him one into the mouth in 5 seconds tops so he has no time to get mad. My nemesis is trying to do anything with his paws, be it cleaning or trimming his claws, he will not have any of it and will attack me over it.

>>3866288
It doesn't but cats still like dairy for some reason. Mine will come to me any time I open a pack of cheese, never tried giving ice cream though. A tiny bit is fine but not too much or too often because cats are actually lactose intolerant.

Could it be that it associated those things with being fed? I used to feed my cat as I ate dinner and my cat came to associate microwave sounds with food. Also could just be gluttonous, try not to overfeed it. Unless it's a kitten then you can't really overfeed it.

A lot of cats that go missing remain very close to house, under cars or in the tall grass for example.
First off put her litter box(es) outside of your house, she'll follow the smell and will come back by herself if you're lucky.
Go out and search her even at sunset/night, with wet food pouches, and call her, make sure she hears the familiar voice.
Don't worry if you still haven't found her after a week or more: keep searching also in weird/unusual spots. A cat I was fostering got lost for almost 6 days and when I was starting to give up I found her hiding near a car. She was fine if not for some shitty ticks attached to her.

she ran over to me and the dog and walked back home with us, you were right she reacted well to the familiar voice and the litter box and she was only two houses away
i fed her as soon as she came back in, in the hopes it helps her remember where to go for resources in case this happens again
shes sat on my lap being a fat cunt now after her impromtu feeding
overall she was out for only an hour or so, not weeks, but thanks a lot

Wow, she's a beauty. Why don't you train her to walk on a leash? It probably won't require much time and effort for an ex outdoor cat. This way she can go outside supervised by you.
>>
>>3866765
I'm in the process of turning a large part of my back garden into a huge fenced cage (basically putting netting very high above us) so we can sit outside and let her run around. It's a sizeable area so she'll have lots to sniff and explore, and it will be a more permanent solution to leash walking

If it's a kitten that you plan to keep indoor, it needs at least one after is is weaned plus the booster dose the month later, which I believe is a trivalent vaccine. Annual vaccinations are not mandatory, as there are little to no risks for a *HEALTHY* cat that exclusively lives inside the house.
Outdoor cats are exposed to all kind of infections, they could interact with wild animals and so on. It's more complicated, follow a vet's instructions.
I don't know about cats that are already adults and were never vaccinated before.

I started feeding my cat wet food instead of dry somewhat recently. I feed him twice a day, in the morning and evening and leave it out for an hour every time. According to the can's nutrition and his weight I should feed him 1.75 can per day, but I'm trying to make him lose a bit of weight so I'm feeding him 1.33 can since that would be the how much he should eat at his ideal weight. However when I feed him he never eats all of it, he barely eats a single can in a day. Is this fine? He doesn't seem to be hungry the rest of the day, except maybe an hour before meal time.
>>
>>3867188
I should add he's 12 and not very active. He also eats slowly because he licks the food forever instead of biting into it and he'll usually eat a little then leave and come back every half hour to eat a little more. Sometimes I have to go up to him with the food but it's not a guarantee he'll eat more.

You leaving some dry available so he has choice? It can be hard to change them over instantly, plus I find cats enjoy variation in their diet. Monitor his weight, check he doesn't keep eating less and less. Different cats have different metabolic rates also.

My understanding is they get that stuff from the organs which are usually removed on cuts sold for human consumption. Most homemade cat food recipes seem to require you to add in organ meat too and then it's ok.

feed her. Gain her trust that way. Start feeding her in a large carrier/cage. dont close the door right away so she goes in and out of it comfortably. When she's unaware, latch the door and take her to get spayed

If you're lucky, she'll lead her kittens in with her. There's usually a vet around that'll spay ferals for free

I can only find her consistently in the dead of night though when vets are closed and I don't even have a car. It's an apartment complex and people seem to know she's there because they leave plastic plates of food. It feels screwed up because I can't cooperate with these people because I don't know who they are, I would have to watch outside for 24 hours to (maybe) find out. Maybe they would get mad at me for trying to trap her.

I used to feed her and the kittens at night last year. They used to hang out near a dumpster of glass, garages with cars. It's suffering to worry about them. Eventually these 2 surviving kittens were taken, not sure by who but I hope they are in a good place. I hate that feral and stray cats exist.

I'm kinda sad I wasn't there when it happened as she felt most comfortable in a confined space (she was rather anti social)

I am however happy that her golden years was some of her best years, with the introduction of some other young kittens in the house in the last few years she became more energetic and seemed to garner much more attention from her humans. She started to want love from everybody and she got it.

This is an older photo back when she was rather witchy still and not very photogenic, but we tried to love her all the same

Weird, I have never heard this mentioned or come across it. The only thing that changes this behaviour in my knowledge is when they first interact with humans. There could be the return of wild genes due to breeding with wild species or in cats that have been feral without interaction for many generations I guess, but this sort of change doesn't happen quickly. I'm filing it in doubtful, awaiting further evidence.
>>
>>3868188
Not him but in my experience it took like 3 generations to have a truly non-feral littler. Even if you interacted with them they would tolerate you but slowly get more distrustful.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if being wild had a genetic component that made cats have a hard disposition to not trust humans even when raising from birth.

A friend of mine is asking me to catsit his two cats for a month while he's on vacation. One of them just turned one and my friend has warned me about his behavioural issues. He basically destroys a ton of furniture and has a habit of biting guests. He got a second cat because he figured it might help with the situation, but all that has really changed is that now the second cat is added to the list of things to attack. Are there any tips as to how to reverse this behaviour? I want to try and help in the one month I'm there, but I'm not sure how much help I can really be.

I originally was working up the courage to stop lurking for the past 2 threads and flaunt a kitten I started fostering 4-5 weeks ago.

This is Jilly, a 10 week old kitten. I was supposed to un-feral her, but she got so attached to me that I had planned on adopting her.
The other mourning she gave me a distress cry before having a seizure. The vet suspected she had rabies, and the shelter deemed it too expensive with too little a chance. She was put down. 10 weeks old.
I'm sorry for blogposting /an/, but it still does not feel real and I've become an emotional wreck at this point. Will post more of her if anyone wants.
>>
>>3868452
>behavioural issues
>one year cat
The cat is young and probably has pent up energy that isn't properly released. That plus a natural energetic personality.
An enriched environment with furniture for cats (A cat tree, cat shelves...) together with daily playtime with his owner will fix the unwanted behavior.
Has the second cat arrived recently? If so give them time to "know" each other better and to set boundaries.

>>3868273

The second cat has been there for 2.5 weeks. I don't know if this is important, but the second cat is a couple years older than the first one and pretty much never swipes back when there's a fight. My friend has been separating them in different parts of the house, but there have been fights whenever he allows them to roam the same space to see if they've gotten used to each other yet.

>>
>>3868736
Oh, now I get the big picture. It can take some weeks, if not months, for strangers cats to learn to tolerate each other. Age is not important in the hierarchy.
Hissing/fighting/growling are ways to establish dominance over a territory, the first cat is jealous of the spaces that have always been his since now. I assume both of them are neutered; if not, tell your friend to do it asap, not only for health reasons but to reduce territorial behaviors. You should start being concerned if months later the cats (or only one of them) still fight and wounds are visible.
If you and your friend believe that it's too early for the cats to meet, go step by step. Get some toys and distract them through play in the same room, preferably with two people, one per cat. Generally you read that it is recommended to make two or more cats eat their meals in different areas if possible, far from one another, however in order to form a positive association, make them share their meal time.
Remember each cat must have its own personal items: food bowl, water bowl, litter box. The more choice they are given, the less fighting to claim the items will occur.

>>3868582
oh man anon I am so sorry. Sucks that it happened to one of your first, it's one of those things that can happen when fostering. Some fosters through my shelter had congenital defects that caused two of them to suffer spontaneous collapsed lungs. This shit happens and it tends to happen more with the kinds of kittens who end up in shelters (be they from inbreeding or toxic situations like hoarding cases or feral colonies in dangerous areas), That doesn't make it any easier
>Rabies
did she have any siblings? this might be a bigger problem than one cat. Rabies in cats is rare (at least where I live), but not impossible. Whatever it is it could impact her siblings or other cats from the same source
>>
>>3868792
whether or not a cat is feral is basically determined by behavior. If they can survive on their own outside and totally reject human interaction they are feral. That behavior is caused by not being socialized by humans. Now you can socialize older cats but it's waaay harder and takes much longer (and is much more dangerous) than kittens (and why would you? they already have their life they don't need you). The typical advice is that cats not socialized by the age of 12 weeks are past that crucial point where socializing is pretty easy (like a few days at most) but it differs from cat to cat.
My boy was feral, he came into the shelter with his sister (so same age) and she had a way better disposition to being socialized. They were both older than 12 weeks but she was able to be socialized while at the shelter but her brother was not, which is why I fostered him in my home. It took weeks actually, but with the help of friendlier foster siblings, a quiet environment, and special attention and understanding he is now domesticated and even harness trained. He's still super scared of other people but he's on the other side of that threshold and learning to relax a little more each day with each new lesson. Had a pretty good first vet appointment. He can be handled, and he's even afraid to be outside without me
>>
>>3868818
>>3868825
it's actually around 12 weeks but that's just a general guideline not a hard rule, cats vary a lot just like people
>>
>>3869124
the milk added is just a marketing gimmick. I've never actually checked but they ought to be removing the lactose from it. It just adds fat and calories which is good for a nursing mother and her babies. If they were in the wild they'd be eating rats n shit anyway and weaning would be the kittens eating more and more of what mom catches and eats and less and less breast milk until mom gets tired and stops them from doing that
>>
>>3869295
go outside and find out, where are they coming from? don't forget to look up
>>
>>3869722
I was told she had a brother hiding in a nearby shed after she was rescued from an attacking dog, but only she was brought to the shelter near me. I have no other information on that. I should probably talk about that with others as a precaution. Also, the vet only said it is "likely" rabies based on symptoms, but the testing will happen within the week to find out if it was really the case.

I've decided that I'm gonna get a cat again, my older cat a few years ago died and for some time I didn't want a new one but now I'm utterly bored of being alone. Maybe it's because of covid-19 or something but when I was at the store I looked at cat/dog section, there was tons of food and toys and I really missed having a cat in general. Having a cat sleep on your bed, the meows, playing around, giving it food and stuff. Gonna ask around with friends and family if anyone is looking to get rid of any cute cats, you never know. I also have a huge box I was thinking of getting rid of it but if I put some soft stuff in it could work as a cat bed, cats love boxes after all. I could place it in the kitchen so it can have some privacy/quiet time if I'm watching a movie or whatever

What to do about a very lethargic cat? I have a cat who became overweight and we have been reducing food to help her lose weight. It's helped a little but she is still overweight.
The problem is that she is lazy as fuck and will spend almost the whole day in one spot, in the same pose, not even lifting up her head. Just completely relaxed and sprawled out. I don't think she is ill because she has no issue kicking into action when she wants to. Doesn't seem motivated by toys, and will move for food for a little while but eventually loses interest. Never wants to play with other pets when they approach her. She is 8.
We have 3 other cats (NOT my choice, parents impulsively adopted new ones without telling me), who are all way more active. Two of them are younger but one is 7 and he's still way more energetic than her and enjoys playing. Other cats are also slimmer.
How do I get her to be more active?

Your cat just doesn't like you

This happens with some of the smarter dog breeds as well. People get huskies, border collies, german shepherds, etc and think their dog doesn't love them and just begrudgingly respects them and submits to them. And it's true, their dog doesn't really like them, they're just extorting food and fearing pnishment.
>>
>>3870333

>>3870366
My cat likes me, she's clingy as fuck, but when I'm sad, unlike my dog that I had to put sleep yesterday, he would accompany all day and cheer me up and play with me 'till I wasnt sad anymore.

My cat hangs around me, from time to time plays with me, even jumps on my belly when I'm laying down, but when I'm sad and require some company she's not intrested. Not like I force her anyways, I let her do her thing, but am still disappointed.
I should have not expect a cat to beahve the same way as a dog I guess.
>>
>>3870373
Your cat hates you and is just doing it for food. Also, you probably acquired some dog scent from dog cuddles. The bacteria that live in their fur can colonize your body if you cuddle them after a shower.

>>3870376
Would they rather sleep with a family member? Then yes

She quite literally doesnt, otherwise she wouldnt have adopted me when I rescued her from a street situation. She came to me, I gave her food, vet care and a home.
Sometimes when I'm sleeping she jumps over me and starts liking my forehead or playfully bite my noise, kinda hurts but I let it happen.

What makes you think that? Also no
>>
Is there something wrong with my cat? I've always felt like she looks off.

It seems a bit older than 10 weeks to me, looking at the body size and face/eyes. Kittens can still get along with mommy for some time after she's compleated the weaning.

>>3870385
It's time for a blood test: she's an elderly cat, so consider giving her a full health check.
Vets recommend to do it every year or every 6 months depending on the cat, but if she's fine just continue to provide her a healthy lifestyle.
>>
>>3870385
Just keep up the vet visits every year or so to make sure everything is still in order, it helps detects things early if she starts developing some issue. Aside from that just the usual, feed her well but not too much and keep taking care of her.

Why does Sam immediately tell everyone to euthanize their cats?

Meet my new cat Mathilda!
She's 1 years old and she's mostly been an indoors cat. Right now she's hiding under the bed? Should I leave her alone?

The guy who owns this cat:

Your cat is like the fifth or sixth this month he's suggest to be put to sleep for absolutely no/trivial reasons.
>>
>>3870572
If she's hiding under the bed, she probably wants some alone time in a safe area. When she's ready to come out, she will, don't force it on her.
>>
>>3870585
Yeah that's what I was thinking. I remember my cat when he first entered my apartment he went full hunter mode and explored everything, this cat? Not so much. Don't want to rush things I guess
>>
>>3870569
>>3870582
I kind of get the feeling that, as much as he prattles on and on about her, he's going to euthanize her the second there's any real problem. It's weird how quick he is to jump to that.

Now she's hiding under the bookshelf, it's closer to the kitchen where the cat food and water is

Any recs for wet food? She's been to the vet recently and he didn't say anything about arthritis (said she is very good besides the weight)
>>

just wondering. I have a kitten that needs a home soon is all

as long as its not something super cheap like 9 lives/twinpet/grocerystorebrand. First three ingredient should be meat. Ideally you want

Ingredients: Meat, Meat Broth, other Meat, meat liver, oil or fiber matter, vitamins, minerals

This varies greatly and i encourage you to research for yourself because it ultimately depends on how much you're willing to pay. I feed my 4 cats Nulo right now and spend roughly $160 a month to feed them all with 12.5 oz cans. If you're willing to pay that much, it's not a bad brand

Dave's Petfood is a bit cheaper. If all else is too much, Fancy Feast is the bottom of the top. If you DO have the money and dont mind spending, I recommend Tiki Cat Luau and Tiki Cat After Dark
>>
>>3870855
and by Fancy Feast, I mean Fancy Feast Classic since it doesnt have fillers

for what it's worth, the company they're making fun of also makes cat food
>>
>>3870860
a blue buffalo parody based on the logo. I have nothing against their recipe but they have a shitton of recalls
>>

was not aware of this. good to know
>>
>>3870893
to be fair, it seems they havent had a recall since they got bought out by General Mills in 2018. Unless this website isnt up to date. Still something to keep an eye on though

I've started my cats on raw a lot of the time, little miss fluff loves it, my Bombay eats it if I mix it with generic wet food in gravy (he picks out the gravy covered raw leaving the generic food).

This little fluff has spent the past four days eating and sleeping on my room floor, like it's all she does. She's perfectly fine and happy and enjoys lots of fuss, but all she has done is lay on my carpet.
>>
how do I teach an outdoor cat to use a litter box indoors? She had some kittens so I brought her indoors but she's still used to taking a shit outdoors so she claws at the door till someone opens the door. this is difficult because there's no one home during the day to let her out.
>>
>>3870909
When she wants to shit, take her to the litter box and put her in it. You can take their front legs and show digging in litter. It will be trial and error and a lot of cleaning up mess. Put down old newspaper and stuff holmes.

I have a powerful desire to get a cat, but I have so much working against me, but I regularly am unable to come home for a full 30-40 hours once a week and I live alone. I know cats are fairly independent and it wouldn't die provided I left sufficient food and water for it, but it would kill me on the inside to know the little bugger is alone for that long.

Feels bad man.
>>
>>3871225
get two cats
>>
>>3871230
I'm not sure why my retarded primate brain didn't think of that, but that's actually not a terrible idea. If I grab up two kittens I wouldn't have to worry about them not getting along. Naturally I'd adopt them since breeders are cancer.
>>
>>3871225
Do you have a yard they can play in
>>
>>3871202
That sucks. Have you considered euthanising your brother? Also do not leave him in charge of your kot.
>>
>>3871261
Based
>>
>>3871225
Well, staying away >24 hours without anyone coming to clean the litter boxes, refill water/food bowls, and playing with the cat is not good, if it's part of your regular lifestyle and not an occasional circumstance.
You seem a responsible person and I hope you can find a way to get a kot someday.
