What >>3865720 says. Everyone assumes you can lock a rabbit away in a cage 20 hours a day and not have it be psychologically damaged the same way as a human
Nothing makes you realize how smart and loving rabbits are like getting them a pen instead of a cage or hutch. I'd recommend it more if you have a big house/apartment you can set a pen up in so they don't get merc'ed by hawks or 'yotes

Sup /bun/ just moved recently and am now taking care of my families bun for the foreseeable future, absolutely adore having her around but I think she's been getting into a rebellious streak with me.
Before the move she had a nice cage along with some fencing so she had some good room to run around, and she always did her business in the cage.
After the move I let her free roam around the living room since I only had a cage for her and didn't want her cooped up all the time.
Earlier this week I got the fencing for her again and she is not having it.
I think I spoiled her with all that free space to run around with before, any way to get her more acclimated to her pen again?

>>
>>3871643
Forgot to mention that she has been actively pissing and shitting outside of her cage, and only in her pen. No other bun bowel movements anywhere else in the living room.
Few nights ago while I had dinner she laid a large pile in her pen closest to me, when I noticed and looked at her she instantly thumped and grunted at me.

They're often more chill than smaller breeds. I wish I had a large breed but my GF really wanted a dwarf rabbits, and they are technically hers.
>>
>>3873273
Did you run away while he was doing it or something? Sounds like your entire family is fucking retarded. I'd wager the rabbit got a broken spine in the first place due to some idiocy by a family member. I have absolutely zero compassion for you.
>>
>>3873579
Rabbit got attacked by a stray dog while he was in our garden supervised, dog ripped the skin off his back and his scapula was fully visible. Spine was damaged and rabbit lost all control of his body. I did take him to the vet and took care of him via syringe feeding and regular cleaning for two weeks.

I just couldn’t bear to see it, raised that rabbit since he was a kit. I’m not asking for compassion just wanted to vent.

Do not feed them too many treats, even if they beg you. I just lost my rabbit today. The best thing you can do as a rabbit parent is to know when to say no. They're cute, too cute for their own good.

Once she got hurt from GI stasis it was all downhill from there. 2 months of slow agony and burnout till she died in my arms. As a first time rabbit owner it was heartbreaking. Whatever you do, stick to hay and organic greens. Treats only once a month, and only a tiny spoonful or less. Your rabbit may seem upset about it, but better to have a disappointed rabbit than a dead rabbit.

>only want the best for my lil bun.

>cry and bury her.
13 years later and I think I killed her bros...

Rabbits are truly fragile creatures. You have to be especially careful with what to feed them. Because anything slightly awry can lead to big vet bills, horrible pain, and death for your rabbit.

Losing her today was one of the hardest, most heartwrenching moments of my whole life. And if I could turn back time, I would do things right, and care for her like a good rabbit owner is supposed to. No treats, just proper dietary care.

I hope to get another rabbit sometime, and when I do, I'll devote every precious moment to making that rabbits life better than the one who came before. She may be gone, but her sacrifice will not be in vain. It's a hard sobering lesson on what can happen if you're complacent. A mistake I will never repeat.

>has pet rabbit as a kid
>rabbit hops around in his room
>he is playing around
>he gets excited and is running around not looking around
>accidentally steps on bunni
>bunni dead
he is really messed up and has no personality, he is very hard to get along with and he is mostly nice but always turns into a jerk.
I think he got serious trauma from that and he sounds so depressed and he plays games to win.

I feel so bad for him and I feel so bad for that bunni. It was no one's fault, everyone has be very careful around tiny animals and tell your friends and kids to be careful as well!

So my dad brought in a wild baby bunny about a month ago because apparently a cat was about to attack him. I told him it's dumb and illegal and he needs to let it go but he didn't listen to me (he said he was going to let him go this weekend though). Anyway he's been keeping him in a cage and when he's gone I let him out and let him run around in my room for a while because I don't like him sitting in a cage all day.

About half an hour ago he was running under my bed when all of a sudden I hear some noises, I see he's on his side just flopping around, unable to use his legs. I tried standing him up and he just falls over. There's no ledges or anything under my bed that he could have fell from so what the fuck did he do to hurt himself?

I put him on my bed and he's just been laying like this for the past half hour. Idk what to do besides just giving him some comfort.

When I was really young my family owned a British Giant Rabbit (descendent of Flemish giants) and he was really chill and well behaved. We would let him run freely around our yard for hours unsupervised as he was too large to fit through any gaps in the fence and wouldn't get harassed by any cats or anything due to his size. Thing was a beast, he once scared away an escaped dog that came into our yard.

Rabbits are by far one of the best pets to have but one of the most misunderstood. People treat them like big hamsters and complain that they’re a pain or don’t do much.

>They use litter boxes that are easier to clean than cat boxes
>Their waste can be used as fertilizer straight from the source
>They’re equivalent to small dogs if trained properly
>They have tons of personality
>House trained rabbits are basically dogs/cats that don’t need to be crated and don’t scratch and don’t have huge vet bills
>very clean animals

My dwarf rabbit went insane last night.
I let him free roam and I also have a dog.
At 3 or 4 am they decided it was for some reason time to fucking party.

The rabit jumps on me and runs over me while im sleeping and starts zooming around the house. This triggers my dog into play mode this rabbit proceeds to JUMP to bite the wall and they start chasing each other around. My dog starts flying at me with toys and jumping over he rabbit who proceeds to run around even more.

the rabbit then runs to try and chew on some dog food then runs to try and knock down the garbage. Any hope of sleep is ruined. He proceed to take a monster shit while chattering his teeth in the litter box. The rabbit only calms down when i take him too the couch and start petting him and he starts doing his rabbit purr.

He has slept for like 2 or 3 hoyurs max and he is already up running to me to lick me and tearing up his little bed.

He also freaking REFUSES to play with toys not made out of willow sticks on and only chews on large pieces of cardboard too small and he ignores it.

I was told rabbits were shy but this dude just had a real crazy part last night.

Does he not often get to free roam? They usually do that when they’re excited and happy. Try to let your bun roam more.

Tourist here. I found what looks to be a dwarf rabbit by the side of the road, probably bolted from some neighbor's home because I've never seen one of these guys just out and about.
My question is: how do I take care of this guy properly until I find the cunt it belongs to? I bought some rabbit food at the store but I guess I could just feed him some grass or lettuce or whatever if he prefers that. I really have no idea
>>
>>3903597
Some rabbit food and some green veggies per day is good. Rabbits usually get hay too, but that's not necessary if you'll only have it for a couple of days

I still feel guilt over the bunnies I had when I was younger, i was a shit owner who had my dad take care of them.
I fed them things I probably shouldn't have and they even birthed baby buns
half of the litter died, and we gave away the remaining buns (including the parents) to some dude that takes care of rabbits
I haven't owned any pets at all since then, and I just wanted to ask if it'd be a good idea to start over with buns now that I'm older and live independently.

Plenty of Timothy hay, available at pet stores
Plenty of Water in a bowl.
Handful of spring mix greens in morning and evening.
Food pellets in morning and evening.
Litter box if you can.
Give it room to hop around, eve if it's only for part of the day.

My bin refuses to eat anything that isn't alfalfa hay, I tried to fill his litterbox with a small bit of alfalfa then a good amount of timothy hay and when I came back out s bit later his litterbox was completely pull out of the corner and the timothy hay was buried or tossed out of the box
>>
>>3908067
does he eat veggies?
>>
>>3908079
Yeah, he's eating his greens, but he just won't eat different hay
>>
>>3908067
I also bought some orchard grass hay and he won't touch that either, I've tried all 3 cuts of timothy and still he only fucking eats alfalfa, what should I do
>>
>>3909062

I'd say that's a you question my dude.
Start with a deep dive into rabbit care. There were undoubtedly a bunch of things that you as a kid never observed or understood about the process.
You can only make an educated decision when you are educated.

Made me so damn happy when the woman who owns those bunnies was (rightly) harassed off the rabbits sub'rabbit'. She keeps them in a shitty pen with no entertainment, soaked pisspads, claims they "didn't play with toys so they don't need any", but will spend six hours forcing them into cute outfits for instagram clout.

Adorable fuckin' bunnies, but shit person. Social media is cancer.

Just got this little one a week ago but he's still afraid of us and runs away as soon as he thinks we're onto him (he's 2 months old now).

Any advice on building trust with the little bun ?

That's not a bun. That's a marshmallow.
>>
>>3914175
Spend a lot of time near his cage/pen and talk to him. Read him books if you have to, just make sure he's hearing your voice a lot so he gets used to it and by extension you.

Love bunnies , back yard buns always scattee when I cross the back yard.
No need to be scared lil guys.
Start walking wide around them, and making sure not to spook them. Over time they learn me. Now they only split if I get within 20 feet of them. Can go work in the back yard and be surrounded by cute little buns. Its nice.
>>
My bun here is paralysed, is it ok to clean his butt everyday? I know rabbits can die if bathed but it should be ok if it’s just the butt right? Don’t want him to develop a rash or mites from excrement.

yes, can he move at all?

He struggles, can’t move his legs at all and anytime he tries to raise himself immediately collapses. Also if he’s not supervised will flip himself like this.

>>
>>3928343
Poor dude is stationary the majority of the day, and willl only force himself to move to eat. He has to be taken care of like a baby, can do nothing by himself and will not eat or drink without everything being laid out infront. Like here >>3926608 I dug a bit and laid in the water bowl so he dose not need to raise his head to drink.

Is he able to have any sort of simulation throughout the day? Even if it's just music or TV? Idk what you could do to make him less bored other than walking him around and cuddling
>>
>>3873641
if you wanted a mercy kill, there at the vet is the time. when ours broke its back after it got caught in the cage door bars and panicked the vet even recommended it, said there was basically no way to rehabilitate and we'd just be putting the poor thing through more suffering trying.

it wouldn't eat or drink at all. it knew its time had come.

and yeah, absolutely heartbreaking. took us quite a while to get over. but eventually we missed

>>3875051
on third rabbit now, second lived 10 years third has lived 7 and still feisty, treats we've found works pretty good is a flake of unsweetened bran cereal, a thumbnail sized piece of cracker, or certain kinds of kitchen scraps like say a finger-length of apple peeling, the little base of a banana that nobody eats, or lettuce stems. We know this because my dad sneaks them to the rabbit basically every time he eats himself, like sneaking candy to grandchildren.

timothy hay and fresh grass should be main food.
alfalfa and clover hay are sometimes foods, too high in protein for regular diet.

they like clippings from fruit trees. we had decorative plums in our front yard and they love those, but i'd bet they'd like apple even more.

Looking into it here, it seems like GI stasis happens mainly from not enough fiber, not enough water, stress, or a foreign object in the gut. Knowing rabbits, that last one can be a pain to prevent. Lost several pairs of earbuds, very lucky the rubber or copper never was an issue. Seems like just about anything flimsy plastic they'll chew on, toys, plastic bags. Even after threat of squirt bottle, after they try to pretend like they weren't up to anything you'll see them inch their way back and start "just sniffing" and test nibbling to see how much they can get away with and restart the moment you look away.

>>3880607
oh yeah, bugs bunny is a sweettooth, carrots like fruit, is a treat food. high in sugar, high in starch, it's a treat food. they'll get diarrhea if they have too much.
>>
>>3929944
*missed having one around more than the pain of losing one.
>>
>>3929286
Considering it if nothing else works, I hope once he grows older and medicine the doctor gave me he'll be healthy. I was told to keep movig each limb 10 min a day for 2 weeks in the off chance he might regain his movement.
>>3929588
He still likes to chew on stuff I give him and gets plenty of head rubs. Also shower him with treats as well might as well give him my best if he might not make it.
