Do you guys ever dream about your cats? My cats fight all the time and I always dream that they stop fighting and become friends but it never happens in real life
>>

I rarely remember what I dream of.
If your cats fight all the time, there's a problem. And they are probably stressed out.
>>
>>3742422
Have you tried reintroduction or other methods of helping them get along? They may never work it out on their own.

Is it okay to neuter a cat? We found this kitten a while ago and now he's bigger and peeing around. Wife wants to get him neutered but I'm not sure about it. Every article I read says it is but fuck normie shit
>>
>>3743078
This place is quite normie
>>
>>3743078
It's very okay to neuter your cat and getting them neutered as early as possible is the best time to do it. If anyone tells you that you shouldn't neuter/spay your pets, it's only because they're fucking retarded.

>vet tells me to give cat 0.5tsp psyllium husk every day
>cat seems to still be constipated (poops every day but seems to strain, or poops every couple of days (but sometimes goes multiple times into litterbox and produces nothing))
>makes hard nuggets or clay feeling logs
>adding water to his food, has water in bowls available, etc., put psyllium husk in food

>want to take him to other local vet, parents don't want me to
>parents don't even want me to give him psyllium husk

i started a new job, and i'm hoping to take him to the vet when I get some money. Is there anything I can do to help him out in the meantime?
>>

Cats yes dogs no.
We have way too many cats.
>>
>>3743078
There are no health benefits to leaving cats and small dogs intact. Large dogs, especially cancer-prone breeds, yes, leave them alone. Vasectomies and ovary sparing spays could add a couple years to their life if coupled with proper preventative care for the treatable, but more common problems of intact dogs in that case. But those aren't cats, now are they?

Wet food. We were feeding him both (wet at set meal times, a small amount of dry food in a bowl he could free feed from), but the last time we went to our main vet in september she said he was too heavy so we cut out the dry food. He get s1 3oz can in the morning, followed by 2 of pic related (one for lunch and one for dinner), along a handful of chicken at about 8 P.M.

So is kitty having diarrhea or is he constipated? Psyllium husk is for fiber, which helps drop diarrhea. If his poops are super hard, he might be getting too much.

No idea, but they require a regular maintenance. You have to change the filters once or twice a year or get specific refills (to be honest I'm not entirely sure if you can use whatever you want or you have to stick to its specific kind of litter). I think that for people who own one cat it's a waste of money.
>>
>>3743266
My cat wakes me up all through the night if he's free to wander. And if I close my bedroom door he randomly meows and scratches at the door throughout the night too. I ended up giving him his own bedroom (after ignoring him scratching at my door for months, he never stopped) and I close the door on him when I put him to bed. He doesn't seem to care at all and I get a good night's sleep.

kek, no I swear I'm not making it up. Truly, the amount of amazing pics I DIDN'T take would be in the 100s. Those kittens were fucking Magical, And having come back to this thread and rereading some of my other posts on this and others, I think you'd be surprised to meet me IRL. I'm not some feminine "fur-daddy"--I'm a builder. But something about having 8 kittens sleep all curled up on and around you, little motors redlining and watching them grow up and their personalities all develop...I'd never trade that experience for ANYTHING. All 11, (yes, 11 accidental kittens, all spayed and adopted now,) and their 2 moms, abandoned sisters who I took in just a month before,(kittens themselves,) were fully litterbox trained, and EVERY ONE could climb to the top of the walnut tree next to the garage I'd just built, and back down it; before they were finally next in line for adoptions.
It was an amazing experience.

There's a stray cat that's been coming by my house for about a month, I've been feeding it. It's shy but extremely friendly, never hissed or swatted at me even when I first met it. Definitely a stray and not feral, it meows loudly whenever it sees me and will happily walk right up to me, no signs of aggression or wild behavior. I'd take it in but I'm currently shacked up with someone who has an irrational hatred of cats and gets pissed at me that it's even around the house.

In any case, despite feeding it for over a month it's still oddly skittish. It only just allowed me to pet it at all, and if it sees me reaching my hand out it'll jump away, even if I was just petting it a second ago. This is weird because it will otherwise walk up to me and rub against my legs, and even eat directly out of my hand if I let it. If I very slowly put my hand out it'll rub against it a bit, but if I even move it at something like 1/4th of normal speed it'll quickly jump back. It also seems dead terrified of humans that aren't me, and will dart into the bushes if it sees someone walking even 50 feet away down the road.

Is this a sign of some kind of past abuse or just an unusually hand-shy cat? I figure I'd ask here because I've never actually owned a cat before, but I've seen videos of/read up about strays and it seems like they tend to get over the issue of hands and petting far faster than this cat has.

Guys how do I make a cat comfortable with entering a room again? My is VERY afraid of the bathroom, and I have his litterbox there. I only noticed recently cause he started meowing before entering his litterbox coupled with the fact that I when i tried to carry him in there he got REAL panicky. Hes genereally not a scared cat. Im pretty sure he has a bad memeory from when I tried to bath him as a kitten in there.

I want him to be comfortable in the whole house. Whats some positive reinforcement techniques I could use? I dont really wanna use food, cause its where dumps his wastes.

And yes I have temporarily removed his litterbox, as he started peing in the couch. (He still shits in the box tho)

>>
>>3744990
No animal shelters or rescue centers that you can call? Don't you know if your state/region has programs for neutering or spaying feral cats for free?
>>
>>3744912
That's totally normal. The cat knows that you give yummy food so of course you are not an 'enemy', although it can't trust you enough to be comfortable with being touched or cuddled. When this happens it doesn't mean that you are dealing with a cat that necessarily has been abused by humans: it probably just grew up without interacting with them.
The stray cat I've been feeding for around 2 years here lets me approach her only if I have food, and hisses at me once she's done eating, go figure.
Don't worry about that. You're already doing great.
>>
>>3744983
First off you don't carry him there against his will, unless you want him to never get over his fears.

Since the litter box is in there I assume the door of the bathroom is constantly open. He needs to explore the room at his own pace, without being forced, and when he feels in the mood.
Food as a reward for using the litter box might actually be a good technique, at least if nothing else worked.

he clearly trusts you as a food provider but hasn't established a learned experience with how to deal with people.

my cat is kinda like that and ive had him for years. it took me like a year of interacting with my cat as a stray before he trusted me enough to pick him up. if you try to pet him he will just run off for a second as if he doesn't want to be petted - but he comes back 10 seconds later indignant you did not chase him. we've built enough trust to do all sorts of violent roughhousing that people generally don't associate with cats.

they have their own personalities, what can i say.

I've thought about getting a kot for a few months but I'm kind of afraid that I won't be good enough for it. I don't want it to get bored and eventually depressed. I guess I'm just looking for some company and something to take care of and love. Should I start going to shelters or private owners? I don't mind if I have to raise a kitten or get a bit of an older cat.
>>
>>3745853
Here's my advice from someone who adopted a cat in a similar situation.
Make sure you have or are able to buy and place at least the following:
> litter box (recommended closed if you live in a smaller apartment)
> scratching pole
> a few cat toys, especially ones for personal interaction like a cat wand
When looking for a cat, take your time to find the best possible match. It's a long term commitment you don't want to rush into, no cat is better than a bad cat. Shelter vs private owners doesn't really matter, just try to do some background checks if possible and don't go for something giving bad vibes. Get a cat that is used to being a single apartment cat and is described as very people oriented, loving, cuddly etc. I suggest an older cat if you are worried about the cat being bored. Older (8+) cats sleep like 16 hours a day and will be happy if you just play with them once a day. Another way to help their mental stimulation is giving them a comfy place to sit with a good view out the window of the world, especially if they can look at birds and also food puzzles.
>>
>>3745869
Cheers for the advice. I'll definitely do my research. Also, should I get a second cat? (That's if I manage to get one). Just so they both have company whenever I'm not in the house.
>>
>>3745875
Multiple cats can be very hit or miss. They can help entertain and keep each other company, but cats can easily hate each other or occasionally fight. Often times over territory if there is not enough cat stuff to go around. You will need to double the amount of litter boxes, scratching poles, etc if you want to minimize the risk here. Alternatively, adopting two cats that are already bonded and don't fight or adopting two with very gentle personalities is possible, but harder to find.

>You may have heard that female cats cannot get pregnant as long as they are still nursing kittens. Unfortunately, this not true. Most cats will have an estrus cycle (heat cycle) about 4 weeks after weaning their kittens if it is still the breeding season. 1She may still be nursing and in heat at the same time.

Is this true? I'm scared. The two female stray cats gave birth like 10 days ago and now I'm seeing (and hearing) the males chasing them again.
>>
my cat constantly pees in my bed and takes a shit on my carpet, it happens only when I am not around tho. Sometimes she uses litterbox, but not always and I have no idea how to deal with it. It's not medical, already had that checked, so it is purely behavior issue.

>>3746011
Update: yep, just saw a new gray cat trying to mount one of the two females, then another cat showed up to do the same.
Do you think she is still nursing the kittens? I can't find them anywhere.
>>
>>3745875
If they're younger cats and you have enough place so they can get out of each others face in times of trouble (at least two rooms, with a litter box each), two social cat bros are a good idea but choose carefully if you don't get an already bonded pair.
Older cats that have spend their life so far without a second cat in the houshold are better off without a change that drastic.
>>
>>3746016
Sounds very much like separation anxiety, try building confidence with more daily rituals like cicker training. Also if she's indoor only some leashed walks around your area might help so she doesn't think the world is ending at the door and you vanish into the big nothing - we had a cat that would yowl for hours if she saw us leaving her territory.

So, my parents decided to get an older black/dark-grey longhair kitten (for some reason... seems to by my mother's choice and my Dad considers it primarily hers. My dad would've wanted a shorthair or maybe even a hypoallergenic since for one thing, he's a bit allergic, but I digress). Last time I saw her, she was about the size of a baseball I think. Now, she looks to be about two three or even four times the size of a baseball, I'd say. She still sorta looks like a shorthair rather than a giant fat-looking ball of fur. They've had her for just a few weeks... I forget how long and have no idea how fast kittens grow or if it changes over time or whatever the fuck, thus the long-windedness.

But anyway, she's still a kitten. What I'm wondering about is I was considering if I should bring my healthy (5~8 year old??) ginger tabby girl over. I got her from a shelter, but you can tell she was always an indoor cat (I never had such a slow cat before), and I thought it would be good for her to meet another cat.

I was thinking if the other one is a kitten, there would be a lower chance of big problems. Would this be a likely case? What are the odds that they won't get along and how would I go about this if I do have them meet?

After all, there is a decent chance she might *have* to get used to that cat in the future for various potential reasons, though I'm not going to get into that...

>>
>>3746898
Oh and also, when will she not be a "kitten" at this rate (and/or generally) and how will this, if at all, affect my cat's and the kitten's reaction to each other?
I kinda need to know because its a chore to get over to my parents by transit and I'm often busy with other things plus I have to plan to bring her etc.. So I kinda wanna know when she'll be a real cat. Especially since my cat is kinda a weak piece of shit compared to a god-like ninja outdoor cat. That will definitely shift the power dynamic...

I sorta imagine the encounter between my cat and an outdoor young-adult cat going the way Sabaton depicts King Charles XII of Sweden's reign. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us2ylGAwBnk

I mean, she's not outdoor YET, but I don't know... I mean, I don't know when I'll fucking do this so just tell me what I could expect up to like a year or two out I guess and maybe also as the relationship develops if she happens to see the cat on some kind of regular basis maybe about as much as I visit my parents house, so we'll say once a week to once every three months... I mean, she'll see her. I'll just put it that way.

Exactly, looks ugly and not much space. I'm kind of neurotic about my house. Also they are a bit expensive, which I don't mind in itself, but it would be really annoying if my cat decided not to use it at all.
>>3746296
The reason I started to consider it was because he started to want to climb on the shelves in my office. Not sure if the main reason he wants to do that now is to get my attention because he learned I don't want him up there.

I was thinking I might try one of those DIY cat shelves type thing. Something in the idea of pic related but I would probably make them a little bigger since I have read some cats won't use them if they are narrow. If anyone has experience with that I would be grateful for opinions.

Is declawing recommended if I have a cat that won't stop scratching the furniture?
>>
>>3747130
Declawing is a third world tier procedure for delinquent owners who can't bother to teach their cat not to scratch furniture or to get scratching posts (or something like pic related).
>>
>>3746898
>>3746900
>>3746916
Do you have to bring her at all costs? The first encounter is never easy for 2 cats, you will likely see hostility from one or both parts in the first days. That's why the introduction has to be gradual (useful advices: https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/introducing-pets).
There's no guarantee that they'll become friends, you can hope that they'll get used to each other's presence without fighting. Also, both have to be spayed to reduce the conflicts.
If you want to do this, it'd be ideal to do this once your parents' cat is still a kitten: just like human kids they are much more trainable than adults and learn faster. It's difficult for an adult cat to adapt to a new situation than it is for a kitten, so go for it if you're determined to make them meet.
Tell your parents that if they want to make her an outdoor cat she will need frequent vet visits, vaccines for various shit such as FIV and FeLV, especially if you plan to make the two cats interact in the future - you don't want you tabby to be infected, right?
>>

There are tons of really fashionable ideas online, it really just needs enough spaces to scratch for marking/claw hygiene and some good spots t's allowed to chill on/in.

>>3747130
>>3747336
Just like sawing a dogs mouth shut is recommended for chewing on shoes, it won't feel pain during the surgery either but probably get extremely irritated afterwards. And remember, you can't let a vet take out the bladder to fix it stress pissing everywhere.
I'm honestly sorry that shit is still legal in your place but if it really is there are probably still kill shelters too, so if you're really that lazy try it before just killing your pet I guess.

Owners that like their pets would of course change the vet at once and place some propper scratching mats/trees in the right places (not wobbly, in prominent places like the mittle of the room) or just put some scratching mats right on the furniture the cat choose if they don't want good cat furniture at those places.

There’s an older one in the back and a younger one in the front - they both have ear mites and the one in the back has some eye issues
I’d like to treat them if possible
Are there any eye, ear, or general treatment medicines I could give them? Where should I look for advice?

>Are there any eye, ear, or general treatment medicines I could give them? Where should I look for advice?
The vet.
>>

I give him only wet food, and boiled chicken. he has 2 waer bowls availabe to him, but sometimes he doesn't drink. I put extra water in with his food.

> The vet
My parents think if the cat is taken to the vet they will demand it be put down so they don’t want to consider that
Plus, the cats let us pet them and even pick them up on occasion but they aren’t exactly tame, they might react very poorly to a vet
I’m not going to totally rule it out but it’s unlikely they will be taken to a vet - it’s more likely they will just continue to be eaten by mites and slowly go blind until they die, unless there is some treatment I could supply
>>
>>3748796
You can ask a vet for advice without bringing the cat. And if they "demand" it be put down, you tell them to pound dirt.

I am a bit mystified by what this is, if it was a nail+cuticle the cat's eye would be inflamed, for all the world it looks like some kind of surgical stent, it's the right colour. Either that or some kind of hunting dart?

This is a bit out there, but *maybe* if a cat caught it's nail on the cat's tear duct "bead", it's a hard, keratanous lump which could hold a claw without causing inflammation.

Poor little mite either way.

I still have no idea what the fuck that thing is, the eye doesn't bleed and the cornea isn't damaged.
He runs towards me, eats, he's even playful... but he's also more alert and won't eat the food if I put it inside the carrier, so no luck catching him that way. I was this close to trap him in the elevator but he sensed a danger and ran off. I'll try to net him next maybe, I can't waste so much time. If my building wasn't so complicated I would have taken him to the clinic already.

I've been wanting to feed my cats better quality european cat food but I can't find a good deal. there's a website called zooplus which sells european stuff like bozita, feringa and animondas carny but the reviews are always mixed and I can't get trial packs which match the bulk pack flavours e.g. trial pack has reindeer, duck and rabbit but the bulk packs have completely different flavours so I wouldn't be able to find out if my cats like them.
do you have any recommendations or tips for getting high quality european wet food (preferably delivered to the UK)?
I'm convinced animondas carny is the best choice but for the reasons mentioned I've been unable to buy it ever since finding out about it a year ago

I read that you can feel a cats' pulse on the hindleg thigh and neck. On the hindleg I can feel it, but nowhere on the neck/throat area. Where do I have to feel? I don't want to press too hard of course. That makes me wonder can you faint a cat this way? Like a sleeper hold?

I have a 1 year old cat, I have to amuse him all the damn time and I'm having trouble focusing on work

anyone else wish their cat were older? I'm used to having old cats. I feel kinda bad but damn I miss the quiet moments with the old man I had before him, how he'd gently lay his paw on my arm, how he only needed to go out once a day (I walk my cats on a leash). How long does it take for them to get like that and less like a kitten? I know it'll be bitter sweet when he's old ... but damn

for male cats as far as their health there is a slight benefit (if we're talking physical only) in that it reduces the chance of stud tail (where their tail can get an abscess from stanky dirt and oils a male produces). It also reduces their desire to roam, get into fights, and fuck, so less risk of Feline Leukemia and FIV. FIV isn't the big deal it used to be (everything else will kill your cat faster than it and it's mostly asymptomatic until they're very old), but FeLV will fuck your cat in 2 years time. There's other diseases you don't want them to get if they roam but can be treated or vaccinated against.

and the big one, it will likely reduce the chance that he'll spray

You should do it, and if you do also get him his RCPC vaccinations, those are two shots about 4 weeks apart (can be from 3 weeks to 6 weeks though), and a 1 year Rabies vaccine if it's his first rabies vaccine. After the one year he should then be able to wait 3 years for the next. Although desu rates of rabies (if you take care of your cat and don't let him roam unattended) tend to be very very low. Some cities require a rabies vac certificate but hardly any enforce any rules when it comes to cats except for if you let your cat free roam

I'm talking about the USA here though, don't know where you live

pumpkin is an alternative to psyllium husk just in case he stops taking that. both are there to increase fiber in diet, which should increase water in the stool, which should make passing easier. It could be an inflammatory condition, but get a second opinion as soon as you can. what do you normally feed him? can food is better than wet food but you could also try avoiding foods with gluten (any "gravy" or "sauce" foods are likely to have gluten) and peas/pea protein (fancy "grain free" foods tend to have these, some cats can't digest peas)

is there any chance, any at all, that he could have worms? might wanna consider that. Drontal is a dewormer pill (if you get prescribed this by the vet, you'll want to wrap it in a pill pocked it tastes fucking terrible, also their huge so maybe break it up into halfs then wrap). The topical flea med Revolution Plus is supposed to kill and prevent worms as well (so you wouldn't mix that with other dewormers, I think)

Keep us posted

a waste as they require one type of litter. it doesn't take long to clean to box, if you get lazy you could even use non clumping litter (cheaper), or pine litter if your cat will tolerate it (get the horse bedding type from a farm store, not the kind specifically marketed to cat owners as litter, it's the same shit), put it in a cardboard box and just dump it after use, but thats wasteful
>>
>>3743645
my old cat would do this too. I have no idea, sometimes cats just have a smell they prefer. The cat before him loved bird shit, like he'd find some and huff it and throw his head back with his eyes closed, mouth open, with this "das it mane" look on his face

cats can have all kinds of history, we'll never truly know. He could have been something like a barn cat or neighborhood stray, around people who feed him but never handled much or loved on, so like some awkward place between feral and stray.

a cat who's been beaten will flinch at a hand, react badly to your tone of voice, may even freeze up if you manage to hold them still.

most of what I see at the shelter are cats that have just been annoyed half to death by kids, they're usually "sassy" until they know you'll respect their boundaries and not use your hands to piss them off

trust me, you want an older cat. Shelters have lots of healthy older cats that nobody wants because people either want kittens or they want to be heroes and get cats with medical issues which is great, but there's this weird inverse bellcurve where healthy middle aged cats are forgotten.
If it's a decent shelter or you get a chance to meet the cat before signing papers you'll get an idea of their personality.
I foster failed a kitten and this little fucker is like a bengal. He's 1 year old and constantly needs exercise and stimulation, like how long until he turns into a sweet old man? I feel bad for thinking such thoughts

I have 4 cats. They’re littermates, 2 black/white tuxedos, 1 solid black, and 1 grey/white tuxedo. The mom and dad cats are both black and white tuxedos. Is the grey and white tuxedo the result of recessive genes or could their have been a second father?

Older cats need a minimum dose of physical activity too, anon, to keep them mentally stimulated. The idea that dogs are animals for active people, and cats are cats for lazy people because they just sleep and eat is outdated.
It's good to know that despite your work you want to find time to keep him entertained, but you shouldn't stop once he's old.

How can I make sure my cat is provided for after I die? I really don't want to worry about my relatives dumping him at some shelter as soon as I'm gone, and I know that even if they promise they'll take care of him it's one thing to say that and another to have a dead man's cat dumped on them months later that they might reconsider...

Sometimes my cat comes to me on my desk headbumps me and lies in front of the keyboard. No matter if I pet him or not he starts thumping his tail and then walks off in a huff after a short while. I don't know what he expects from me. He gets enough treats and playtime at fixed times and doesn't seem bored. But I cannot figure out what he wants at that moment. I somewhat accidentally into this little guy. He was a former feral and I took him on because that was the best thing for him at the time. I tamed him, I feel super protective of him, but it's been an adjustment for me. I take him out and play with him as much as I can, not like I'm going to drop him off at the shelter now

So here's the deal: I'm planning to go on vacation in July. I want to stay at the beach for a week, but I obviously need someone to watch my cat while I'm gone.
My grandmother told me that she would be willing to watch him for the week if I brought him to her house. She's owned cats before, so she's not unused to them. I got my cat in late 2019, and I rarely have visitors (even before the pandemic), so he's very shy of other people. Also, I don't let him go outside ever. If I brought his food and litter box to her place, and she never let him outside, would it be fine to leave him in her care for a week? I don't want to have to resort to a kennel.
>>
>>3742293
we're slowly trying to bring a stray inside, but we haven't been able to take her to the vet yet. She's currently sitting here on the couch. Kind of worried about her having fleas or something. Should I put her out? Vet won't be able to get her in until a few weeks from now. I know she's "okay" because we've been taking care of her somewhat as an outdoor cat for over a year. It's kind of windy and shitty outside so I don't know if I want to but I don't wanna get bugs in my hair or something

In that case, power through it. I know it can be extremely annoying but see it the positive way: Now is the time he'll learn a lot of tricks pretty fast and try out all the weird games and crafts you do for him. Also don't forget to take videos.
>>
>>3751974
A trusted relative is generally better than a kennel or than a stranger you pay to come to your house once or twice a day, you'll be able to enjoy the vacation without being constantly worried.
Repeat your grandma many times to check that the door is always closed, to avoid him accidentally go out, and when you bring the cat there, keep all of his stuff in just one room dedicated to him.
One week is not a sufficient amount of days to get used to your grandma's house, he'll probably never leave that room but he'll be fine if he's given a space with all the things that have your house's smell on them (if there is a blanket, or a pillow, that he likes to sleep on bring that too).
>>
>>3751979
There are flea treatments from Frontline to the shampoos. You might see the fleas bouncing in her fur if she has them. Also calling a vet for an advice wouldn't be bad.

If you put her out now, there's no way to know if she'll be there when you take her in again. Also bear in mind that female cats go in heat in this season, she's better inside the house if you're determined to make her your domestic cat.
Set up a room only for her, with a litter box and food/water bowls instead than letting her walk around the house; not only this will make her more at ease but you'll reduce the potential spread of the fleas.
>>
One of my cats just figured out masturbation. She's been in and out of heat since February and just recently figured out... something. I dont know WHAT the fuck she's doing but she'll fold her self into an odd position and alittle while later, she'll growl the roll around frantically.

Is this common or is she just that pent up?

I know, my mother has a couple of photos where I was a little kid and the cat was in the background looking almost the same as when she died, just the fur smoothness changed.
In her later years she was tired as fuck all the time and couldn't resist climbing on you to just chill in the warmth of your lap. When she was younger she couldn't resist trying to kill your hands or toes in some way and I remember spending at least one night awake because the cat was absolutely feral and trying to eat my toes for real. Ears bent back and hissing. I fended her off with my pillow until the morning came.
I am pretty sure that she was some sort of evil spirit who later repented when she saw that even for her the end was nigh, and now I miss her.
