Need some advice, /aq/. I kind of fucked up the other day. I’m new to keeping cherry shrimp and noticed one was on its side. I quickly looked at websites and thought it was a result of an ammonia spike. I panicked and changed the water. However, after further research, I realized that it was probably the result of a big water change I did on Saturday night. I found that shrimp dead today and now another one is on its side. My question is: Should I move the shrimp to one of my more established tanks or would it be too stressful to cope with? I don’t want to lose another one. I don’t know the best course of action to save it :( Pic related - a shrimpbro that hasn’t left the side of the one trying to molt.
>>3648255stfu >>3648256keep them in the tank, damage is already done so moving them again would just make it worse. Just double check its not actually ammonia or anything. good luck anon
>>3647578are these worth or do they just hide in basement all the time?
>>3648263I had 5 in a 17 gallon and they were out all the timegranted it was a low light black water tank with tons of leaves for them to crawl through
>>3648263they take a while to warm up in my experience but then they noodle around non stop after a while. Just have regular fish that will act as dithers, they didnt come out at all when I had nothing else in the tank for a while.
>>3648274>>3648279nice, I’ll have a similar setup. Just don’t want to waste bioload on a small tank if they are more likely to be nocturnal creeps
>>3648259Thanks, anon. I’ve just tested the ammonia again. It’s still 0.25. Not ideal, but the other shrimp seem to be fine. I’ll have to keep an eye on things. I appreciate the advice.
>>3648302>O.25errrr what are the other shrimp? you should move the blues out of there in that case
for the anon that told me to plant yesterday, if you're out there... I, for one, grossly overestimated my skills as a first timer, I think the powder tropica soil is too thin and a bit hard to plant on... Now to wait and wee what dies, what gets uprooted and how much algae do i get...
Quality lights that won't kill you
>>3648356you can bury them deeper if they float up, it doesnt have to be perfectly exposed above the substrate line
>>3648348They’re all blues. Everything was fine until recently. I had a lot of melting of plants, which I think spiked the ammonia, so I siphoned a lot of the loose plant matter and algae. The ammonia levels are still the same though, so I’m a bit confused. I think that the quick and fairly significant water changes caused my current problem of shrimp being unable to molt. I can move them to another tank with my reds, who seem to be fine.
>>3648364hmm they get stressed either option you do. I would just do some small frequent water changes to bring down the ammonia. better to be safe for me personally
>>3648359Noted, I don't want to mess with it any more for the day... I'm not very happy with it but hopefully the fishies will like it once I get some in there after the cycle...

Hey aqualads! Ive got these aquarium heaters second hand. Can I run these without having them in water? Would like to use them in another project but I dont want to damage them if they run dry
>>3648678just dont run them without water and you're good
>>3648678no they will shatter/explode
>>3648681>>3648682This true? Theyre essentially just coils that get hot, same as a toaster. What would cause the shatter/explosion?
>>3648644for maximum schooling behavior you want the same color morph ideally, most fish will school more readily with fish that look most like they do.
>>3648685>What would cause the shatter/explosion?you running them w/o water, dummy
>>3648685I dunno, i've broken loads of them during water changes and forget to unplug them. They all shatter and shit themselves. Maybe it's the temp difference of the glass that shatters it, like how normal glass tends to shatter from rapid temp changes. Maybe cause the coils are way more compact than toasters, its wayyyy more coil length than a toaster. I know the toaster coils need to be wide to dissipate heat and need to be attached to the secondary plate to act a s heatsink. The aquarium heater has none of that since it relies on water to do that. So it just holds onto the heat which I can see it causing suicide to itself. But blah blah blah, fug if I know the actually answer. They cannot run dry is all I know and found
>>3648696Mmmm not really grasping why it would explode. On that note, how much water is needed to run them? Theres a minimum water level line on one of them, but what if I just stuck it in a water bottle? Would that be safe and keep it from exploding?
>>3648704the coils need to be submerged. What could you possibly gain from putting it in a water bottle? What's this project

>>3648713>making sketchy construction becuz u wanna cheap outu dumb mofo gonna fucking combust that old lady, get a grip and buy her some non chinese heating blanketgeez
>>3648096I hate to bump my own question but I'm getting concerned. The betta has been in the salt water for about 48 hours now and the fungal growth has only increased in size. The betta herself is more active though, closer to how she was before she damaged her fin
>>3648713this isn't going to do jack shit for that, it's not designed to radiate heat to air in any capacity. Its the same exact material as in hair dryers, imagine you ripped out the fan from a hairdryer and just the coil run on its own. A bottle of water at 80 degrees isn't going to do shit either. Are you gonna put a 30 gallon in your cat home to act as a heatsink????? Buy a heating pad you weirdo
Dear /aq/ diary,Today I decided to test my water before putting into my tank. I filled about 3 gallons into a bucket at 8:30 am this morning, brought it to the office, and tested it around 5:00. Showed a small amount of nitrite and no real sign of nitrate - I might need to scrub the inside for substrate residue, or make sure it fully dries. Figured rinsing it should be enough, but apparently not. idk, just weirdWhen I turned the light on, it looked like there were hundreds of needle-thin bacteria floating around the water. Also weird. It's not like I'm leaving the bucket to sit full of water for days on end (anymore). Do you think they are large bacteria, or just baby detritus worms knocked loose from the water change? Also, any help identifying this orange algae? It coats the plant almost like barnacles, and is a little difficult to scrape off even with a toothbrush.
>>3648717Why not just nip the infected parts of the fins off?
>>3648716>>3648719This is where the water bottle comes into play.Hear me out.Have box.Hole for her entrance (duh)Stick aqua heater in -lets say- gallon jugPut gallon jug with heater in boxTurn on heaterThe gallon of water will heat up and radiate heat. >>3648717bump up salt slightly and wait to see how it looks in the morning
>>3648713its so funny how people blast you for trying to cheap out and tell you to buy expensive heaters these same people will yell at you for buying a $200 light instead of doing some retarded diy electrocution project
>>3648727My initial idea didnt have the water bottle.Which is why I asked if I can run them dry
>>3648727no you weirdo do you know how many watts and what temps a radiotor uses to transfer heat to oil then to air? A gallon of water with a dinky aquarium heater wont do anything, the fucking air will dissipate the heat before it's of any use. Just buy a $15 reptile heating pad and throw a cushion over it.Tell your cat I accept thank you payments to my paypal
>>3648725I didn't realize you could do that. Can I manually remove the growth? It's an elephant ear betta and she tore a pectoral fin on something sharp and that's where the infection is right up against her body>>3648728I've upped the salt to 2 tablespoons in an 8 gallon tank

>>3648735South American cichlid? Keep us updated on how those carpeting plants go!
>>3648733Well shit! Just looked it up. Didnt know that was a thing, never owned reptiles before. Didnt know that was an optionThanks and fuck them other guys!Excuse me for trying to be resourceful with shit I got for freeBut really though does my idea not make any sense? How would the air dissipate the heat if its in a mostly enclosed box. Im not thinking to warm up a whole fucking room
>>3648735can you do me a favor and move the rock on the right, it looks so unnatural. fish choice and substrate size ruin sense of scale. I would move hairgrass out of back and swap out with the plant in the lower right corner. Move front rock on left as far back as you can. Honestly I would just smash the square looking rock into rubble so you can use it to accent the other rocks. Small pieces make a huge difference. I give you a 4/5 anyways though
>>3648784cause the heat levels from aquarium heater to a bottle is minuscule. Like so minuscule dude. Almost all of the heat dissipation will be from the water evaporation anyways, unless you want a damp cat home you have to seal it. Once you seal it the main heat dissipation is now gone so its useless. Like its next to nothing I can't even put it into perspective how useless it would be for your purpose, the natural temp draft from the door will negate it. The only warmth your cat will get is from touching the bottle itself. Undersize with the heating pad btw, they get VERY hot if something is on top of them 24/7. Make sure the cat can't move the cushion

That's probably not going to be warm enough. 78F sounds nice because you're thinking of air temp, but that water temp would be too cold.Consider this: most water beds are set to 85-92F for humans. Cats' body temp (just googled it) is higher than a human's, so you'd need it to be more like 89-96F
fuck I regret getting mystery snails a few months ago. How long do these fuckers live? I am toying with the idea of just chucking them out but I still have a bit of a conscience about it
>>3648965About a year, maybe a bit longer with really good conditions. Also just give them back to the LFS. You may get store credit for them.Speaking of which, gotta start thinking of replacing my nerites. They all just hit two years.
>>3648967say it with me, boysRABBIT SNAIL
>>3648968RAMSHORN SNAIL
>>3647589I have that exact same light fixture!
>>3648678Yeah, you can run them outside of the water! I would also recommend holding them while dry-running them. Grip them as tight as you can, and do that for as long as you can, just to make sure they're working properly. The best place to do this would probably be in your garage, around some gasoline cans and dry rags, if you have any.
>>3648970ramshorn snails are objectively the superior snail.
>>3648970>>3648981>suggesting a pestDo you two run shitwater tanks too?
>>3648982never had ramshorn snails turn into pest populations, you're the one running a shitwater tank
god dammit now my other female molly is pregnant, i have already been dealing with the 8 fry from the other bitch. i think i am gonna give all the females back to the store once i can tell the genders

What is the cheapest black substrate I can use? Is there black pfs?
>>3649044black diamond blasting sand
>>3649047Thank you! Is it actually good or just something that broke bastards use?
>>3649047sounds dangerous
>>3649049its very common, just a bit dusty compared to pool sand
Added a second fish to the tankReckon this is about maximum, perhaps one more at a latter date
the white fungal infection on my betta has turned brown, does this indicate if I've killed it with the salt at all?
>>3649050It's completely inert and safe, You can get a 50lb bag for around $10.
>>3649067i.. its evolved...
Don't let the black diamond blasting sand jew trick you. It's useless for plants and you'll spend more on root tabs if you go that route

If u were a fish wut fish would u be
>>3649102How do I improve her immune system so this doesn’t happen again? Assuming she survives. I did a complete water and decor change and sanitized the entire tank and assembly. Introduced some cories to my tank, which previously only held royal tetras. The cories alternate between lazily hanging out in group and being crazy active and collectively zooming up the sides of the tank, while the tetras are schooling and moving slowly - whereas they used to be all over the place. I presume they're all still settling in and getting used to each other?

so in my pandemic boredon and retardation I caught a bunch of mosquitofish and want to selecticely breed them into smashed and slammed monstrosities. The question is, are there any quick tricks for catching a specific one? I put a bunch of rocks and broken pottery inside and the fuckers are so fast and evasive. how do I catch an individual one that I am interested in? I was thinking of using a sort of inverted coke bottle and just trap until I get the one I want but it just isnt working
>>3649360maybe stick em on the fridge for a while
Does a bent spine harm the guppies?i have one with a bent spine and i love how meaty and plum she is, like her tail area is much more thicker due to the bent her spine has which is absolutely perfect for a meal
>>3649438the fuck? you going to eat it? I want to breed chubbyness or roundness into my guppies but I need super sped generations and mutations. if I buy some of that hobby uranium from amazon and put it near them would they get cool mutations or would they look lole a harlrquin fetus
>>3649438yes. however do not feel bad. you are a god to these guppies. everything they have, everything they know is you. they exist at and for your pleasure, nothing more. Inflicting them with deformities is just keeping them fearful and reminding them of how limited they are. Fear of god creates healthy societies. If you value your guppy colony's spiritual health you must inflict hardship upon them on occasion as providing limitless resources and making a guppy paradise will make your guppies arrogant and possibly introduce atheism into your tank.
>>3649444They would just die, or be unaffected. There's really no 'mutation range'
>>3648678I had a similar eheim heater I forgot to turn off before a water change and within about 5 minutes, it overheated and the glass cracked all over. If you need a dry heater for a terrarium or something, you may want to get an under tank heater mat from reptizoo or zoomed.
>>3649448yeah it's about a 99% chance they become sterile and die, 1% chance they get a mutation and it kills them or something and 0.000001% chance you get something interesting. If you want to go mad scientist on guppies you have to wait for home genelabs. I am not even joking when I say this is maybe 10 years off at most unless the government preemptively regulates it (already happened to some extent in much of Europe). There are already some home genetics hobbyists who have pretty advanced setups and the equipment needed for crispr is actually fairly cheap in lab equipment terms. You can probably make a low end setup right now for like $10-20kish?
>>3649444i already ate one that died in it's sleep, was good.my goal is to breed so many guppies and become the biggest guppy breeder in my whole region, to the point where i can survive famines with the guppies while selling the pretty looking ones to the elites and fish stores, i will become the elite with an army of slave guppy harem.
>>3649459well after some googling, turns out scientists use a chemical called ENU which is a powerful mutagen to induce mutations for genetics studies. I am going to see if its even possible to get some of this stuff. ill try not to breathe it in
>>3649464no you should totally breathe it in, what if you get superpowers?
>>3649466its 49 bucks for a gram. going to have to turn in some cans for money or find a cheaper mutagen

>>3649187i can guarantee you it wasn't the wisteria. You have underlying problems. First thing is that the fungus happens after an open wound is made, second the fungus happens from poor immune system. Feed your fish better
>>3649462now this is epic
>>364857810g is too small
>>3649604hes probably been stressed as fuck from the lockdowns hurting his small business
>>3647100>Yeah absolutely. Half the fun is their showing off and zipping around. I separated 2F and 1M for breeding purposes, basically if you wanted to self populate on the cheap.Sweet, that might be a fun alternative for my planned tank then. 90 or 120 liters low & wide, planned on low-ish ph for chili rasbora anyway, and these seem to like that too.

Saw two hitchhikers after I planted yesterday on my 60L, one was like a mm long cone snail and the other half the size, removed one but the small one disappeared, hopefully no uncontrolled snail pop establishes in my tank...
