The photographer of this had to publicly admit he staged the shot. He put cat food on the mushroom to attract the fox, who to his surprise took a good chunk out of the mushroom along w/ the catfood. A tabloid paper that published that photo and a close-up of the fox going at the mushroom contacted a "wild life specialist" to ask whether she thought it was pawsible the fox was looking fur a high, butt received a lukewarm response

I think that's a terrible idea. It would go down the road of Australia, where the British brought the Red Fox fur sport killing, and now the foxes are considered "an invasive species" and genocided by another species that certainly theirselves never travelled to every corner of the planet, invading and stealing islands, deserts, forests, tearing them down to build their hives of cities, fast-food restaurants and parking lots

I wish Russian domesticated foxes were more viable as pets. They should breed for other qualities beyond tameness that makes them on the same level as a dog or cat care. With enough budget and time (and maybe genetic engineering to cheat a bit) they could become the third biggest pet alongside the previously mentioned two

Possible distant root ancestry - regardless, it's not surprising that two small, highly nimble, solo-operative carnivorous terrestrial mammals would share many adaptations. Sensitive whiskers and pointy upright ears just make sense.

Take phylogentic trees for what they actually are: a guess, produced by institutions afraid of rocking their respective boats and not with capturing what actually happened in the past. They change the damn things constantly.

If two species are cited as "closely related" on wikipedia but look nothing alike, and vice versa, just trust your instincts.

>Take phylogentic trees for what they actually are: a guess,
Obviously. They're educated guesses, constantly being updated to reflect advances in science.
>produced by institutions afraid of rocking their respective boats and not with capturing what actually happened in the past.
If that's the case, wouldn't it be more reasonable to resist change?
>They change the damn things constantly.
For a reason. There's many factors to consider, such as morphology, genetics, and whatever bullshit that doesn't cross my mind.
>If two species are cited as "closely related" on wikipedia but look nothing alike, and vice versa, just trust your instincts.
I'll use my capacity for thought and speculate that they've originated from a common, normal-looking ancestor that eventually adapted to their respective environments. Just like how humans and the fucking chimps did.
>>
>>3518975
>Obviously. They're educated guesses, constantly being updated to reflect advances in science.
Still, they'll never capture what exactly happened in the past.
>If that's the case, wouldn't it be more reasonable to resist change?
They have to comply to the "advances in science" you've mentioned, or they'll lose credibility, losing firm "intellectual" ground.
>For a reason. There's many factors to consider, such as morphology, genetics, and whatever bullshit that doesn't cross my mind.
So, you're more interested in trusting the dogma established by those self-employed "scientific authorities" than your intuition?
>I'll use my capacity for thought and speculate that they've originated from a common, normal-looking ancestor that eventually adapted to their respective environments. Just like how humans and the fucking chimps did.
Sure, but how far ago in the past did they diverge? Phylogenetic trees don't give you any answers. Genetic analysis is useless to none as well, since all mammals have a meager difference in their genetics, making it easy to jumble up the tree.

They haven't been mismanaged in any way, this shit takes a LONG time. Less then a hundred years of selective breeding is not equivalent to ten thousand+ years of domestication that happened with other animals. They're already very tame, they just don't have the same emotional closeness and ease of understanding humans as dogs do. Hopefully in the future all or more animals can be given similar treatment, or genetic technology can accelerate the process further with selective gene manipulation.

Imagine being lovingly groomed by your foxmommy before curling up and going to sleep safe warm and happy
You’re woken up for a second by a snap and some screaming but she gives you a lil lick on the head and you go right back to sleep again
A few days later you find a weird looking monkey with a sharp metal thing around one of his limbs and most of his head missing like something burrowed through it
Nearby there’s the corpse of one of those tiny wolves but someone else already picked it clean
That kind of thing happens. You’ll get the next one.

>Imagine being lovingly groomed by your foxmommy before curling up and going to sleep safe warm and happy

I can picture this scenario in my head:
>I'm sitting on layers of colourful Autumn leaves on a forest floor. It's raining, the kind of subtle rain that can be heard as it rustles on the leaves around you, butt doeskn't really make you wet
>I feel a glowing warmth emanating from behind me, my back is leaning against some kind of a soft, fuzzy wall
>I look up and I see a giant shape looming over me. Suddenly it moves, initially startling me butt then I make out a pair of brilliant hazel eyes, staring down. I recognize a familiar face. It's Mother
>Her head gently descends above me, suddenly I can feel her warm breath, her wet tongue combing the top of my head, accompanied w/ soft wet sounds of her mouth
>In response, I push the side of my head to her chest, my cheek burying into this soft wall of fur. I close my eyes and quietly listen to her heartbeat. She continues, w/ each stroke of her tongue, I begin to find myself losing awareness of my surroundings. The weight forces me off my sitting pawsture, I slide onto the floor
>Her tongue begins to slowly travel a path from the top of my head, to my neck, to my back, continuing down. The twilight gradually turns to a palette of darker and darker greys. I drift off to slumberland

Dunno what to think about the rest of your story tho

Because humans can relate to them easily and their facial structure is inherently attractive to us. And their social structure is easy to comprehend to boot. Out of all the wild animals on earth, a wolf is one of the few that could be your friend for life with a 0% chance of tearing your face off as long as you have a triple digit IQ. There's a reason we domesticated them so long ago. Even now that they've long since been taken into the folds of our society, the basic reasons we had for it remain. People just naturally like canines.

I would express zero surprise if some crazy bastard were secretly inserting primate genes for brain development into them and working on the theoretical basis for a bipedal variant using bear DNA and methylation patterns for limb structure.

So what's everyone's thoughts on foxes being bred to be domesticated so they can be used as pets without legal issues?

I'm against it because they would stop resembling their current wild form. I'm fine with not being able to have one as a pet
>>
>>3538914
Perfectly fine. Care should be taken not to let them mix with wild populations though, so they should be spayed and neutered before being sold. They should also not be bred for retarded aesthetic reasons, rather for health and vigor as well as the normal desirable mental characteristics of a pet.

The thing about the domesticated Russian ones is they're starting to stop looking like Foxes, and just looking like dogs.
Which is a massive problem: If you just make another dog breed, then you miss the target of why you're trying to domesticate foxes in the first place.

..and got a fine or some other type of slap on the wrist? I too could think of a more tangible way of dealing w/ a situation like that, make sure it was physically impawsible fur them to re-offend

Hypothetically speaking, ofc

I kind of wish that you needed a license to own pets sometimes, but at the same time I know I would be too autistic to get that license myself and socially awkward autists like me need animal companions the most

It'd prolly be an automagic online service, w/ a minimum background/criminal record check and a "service" fee. You'd have to get certified to become a pet owner and "pet breeders" would have to register themselves too, prolly fur a periodical fee

Essentially this system would do jack shit about the 80% of shit ppl getting a pet from the 90% of shit byb puppy mills

>Got arrested because she kiled an american
I do find some bittersweet solace in that in many cases an animal abuser is caught even fur committing an unrelated crime. Dokn't think Colombia practices capital punishment tho, regrettably

Honestly I don’t care that they don’t look much like wild foxes. They’re still vastly different looking from dogs.
I do hope they don’t breed in the constant neediness of a dog though.

I only seen two foxes , One last year and a few months ago, how Are they really rare in Pennsylvania or are they very good at hiding?
