Does anyone here keep pigeons as pets? Is it feasible/humane to do? I used to hate pigeons but since I had a lot flying around my flat and I've been observing them, they really are charming little creatures.
>>
>>3420731
Pigeons have been bred for human interaction, though you do need to be aware that pigeons NEED to fly
If a pigeon is alive it will find it's way back, no worries, but you can't clip their wings or keep them indoors, they can actually die from boredom

I've had pigeons as pets, It's very feasable and fun because they're the most loyal birds to humans. They can fly but won't leave you if you're trating them well.

If you're a breeder though, you need to be careful with stray pigeons because they will also join and mutt the fuck out of your pure breeds (aka, everything will look like your pic in a few generations)

Nothing, my rent contract expired and I've moved to another part of the city. Wanted to grab him and show him my new apartment so that he could visit me if he'd like, but it was at the time he got with a female pidgin(pic related) and it seemed like she was laying eggs. So didn't want to separate them even if only for a couple of hours.

They are really romantic (female pidgin) (the male pidgin just wanted to hang and eat. The female bird would often come to him, would 'kiss' and 99% of the time she would initiate mating.
Still got hundreds of photos and several videos of my best pandemic bro.

(i still miss him like you wouldn't believe).

I have a pair of woodpigeons nesting in a tree infront of my balcony. I love these guys, leave out some seeds for them that these fat bastards just gobble up.
Sometimes when I'm out drinking a coffee one of them flies over for the seeds, notices me and just freezess up, just looking dumbfounded at me from just a meter away. After 10 minutes or so it flies back to the tree and continues observing me from there, as do I.
I love them but they honestly come off as really stupid

The feathers are designed to make maximum noise. It's so that when they're scared (e.g. predator incoming) they take off with that clapping noise to warn other pigeons about the threat. Normal take off with wings like that still make that fwith fwith sort of noise. As a prey bird, there's no point in spec-ing into silent flight, they aren't getting the jump on anyone - they're the ones who gotta escape and pigeons are great at that.

Kinda sad.
The hoohoo that hoo'd on my house with a really unique hoohoo apparently left couple days ago. I heard the original hoo like two days ago but not entirely sure but seems like it's really gone now. The new hoohoo in charge of hoohoos hoohoos in a really lame and boring way, literally nothing special to it and just no replacement. The original hoohoo always put lots of emotion and effort into it.

justify that claim

>super cute
>stupid as hell so they don't need 24/7 enrichment and interaction so they don't go insane, like parrots

Can't only certain types of pigeons do races and messages? I don't think Mourning Doves could be trained to do all that.

False from the ground up. Pigeons need constant interaction/enrichment or multiple pigeons in a flock. The only reason you don't hear more stories of pigeons developing mental derangement is because having many pigeons is far more cost effective than having many parrots, such that having a single pigeon is far rarer than having a single parrot.

I can tell already that you're a shit owner who shouldn't be allowed to own birds of any sort.

>Sirocco's preference for head-mating and resistance to massage techniques has made it difficult to collect his semen. Scientists who work with him designed an "ejaculation helmet" for volunteers to wear while he attempted to mate with their heads. The dimpled, rubber headgear was ineffective due to the duration of the kakapo's mating period and was later donated to the Te Papa museum in Wellington.
