Just watched this and I loved it. Is there any possibility of a season 2? If not I'll read it but I saw that it's on an indefinite hiatus. What are your thoughts on the show? The isolated yet open feeling of the island/school they're protecting, the grand mystery of the Lunarians, the nature of the world they're in, and the cute character designs/personalities were a few of my favorite things
My theory is that Orange really really doesn't want to fuck up the season 2, so they're fucking around with Beastars as practice so they can really nail the LotL sequel. As for the show itself, I rewatched the first episode with a friend and he wasn't interested. Felt a bit infodumpish, but obviously that establishes the setting and doesn't carry on for the whole show. And he missed all the amazing animation and Phos's antics and the way she shatters. I was disappointed in him.

I don't think I've seen any other series where the MC gradually changes physically and mentally over the course of the plot, little by little to such a huge extent. Usually you have some character development here and there but for Phos it's a constant thing. He probably has a dozen design variations by now and I can't remember all of them.

There were some pre-production demos made in traditional animation by Orange that looked amazing, and I feel like we were robbed of a much better product. At the time, making this show in 3D made sense for the studio since it was a technological investment and they could better study the workflow, so it is what it is. The manga I feel is a masterpiece, it's one of those rare titles that has a very unique atmosphere and you emotionally understand what is going on thematically. The art is also incredibly good, particularly the beautiful high contrast art that is almost naïve in style. The storytelling is first and foremost allegorical and based on the interplay of these very particular psychological archetypes; their clashes and their developments all make sense. There is also some levity to lighten up things somewhat, but when it's serious, it's serious. Highly recommend it.
