Some translation resources would be nice, beyond what little there is in the first link.

https://www.wordhippo.com/
It's my most visited site when doing TLs and, in my opinion, more important than any single Japanese language resource.

Also, I'm in the camp that supports translating wordplay rather than leaving an unhumorous TL note, so I find
https://punpedia.org/
helpful for coming up with equivalent English jokes.
>>
>>223727117
How is wordhippo different from Jisho , jisho is good for slang and definitions.
>>
>>223727219
Wordhippo specializes in English, so it has a far larger synonym bank. Compare, for example:
https://jisho.org/search/%E3%82%84%E3%81%A3%E3%81%A6%E3%81%BF%E3%82%8B
https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/another-word-for/have_a_go.html
This is especially helpful when you need something along the lines of
>a word with that means X, but has the connotations of Y
Where X comes from Jisho or another JP dictionary, but Y comes from the context of the scene/speaker (e.g., childish, pretentious, casual etc.).
This is especially important for translating dialogue, where you don't want to write all the characters with the same voice.

Or sometimes the translation simply won't fit nicely into the bubble, and there's a short and sweet replacement that does the job.

I must say, anon's screentone upscale model from the last week is quite nice for upscaling individual pictures where you can spend some time fiddling with masking and stuff. Can't be used for batch upscaling because it turns gradients and sometimes even jpg artifacts into screentones.

This could end up being a useful tool, but I'd recommend only using it for self-reading. Of course that won't stop existing machine-lators from posting this as actual translations.
>>
>>223739242
It's still machine translation. I think he currently uses deepl as his translation source. The thing is, it's bad for certain idioms or sayings the tool doesn't recognize, since then it will just spit out literal gibberish that completely misses the point of the line. And it often adds pronouns to the sentences that weren't in the original text. Foreign names can often render as gibberish. I've even had it tell me that something wasn't true when it was true. You'd have to use your own personal judgement and do edits to make sure it's all cohesive. He realizes this, which is why he made the outputs so easy to edit.

If you can't read Japanese and want quick translations of raws or if you already machine TL this tool sounds like a miracle. But for professional translations and to achieve more accurate fan TL you wouldn't want to use this tool for translation.

>>
>>223749203
That looks like a standard transposition like you'd do with a matrix. Cut up the images into 4 x 4 pieces, swap the x,y indices of the pieces and reassemble. More complicated ones, if you're lucky, are in the js code of the reader. If not, then you need find a way to either get the descrambling code for every page or intercept the images from the reader after they've been descrambled.
>>
Put the images at full screen. Hit Ctrl+Shift+i to open dev tools. Look and see what resolution the images are stored at. Hit the gear icon and create a made up device at that resolution. Make sure the current device is set to your made up device and that it's at 100%. Now click the 3 dots to the right of your device and select "capture screenshot". Now click the image and it will take you to the next image. Repeat "capture screenshot". Sometimes it might error at which point just recapture the pages that errored. Out of around 40 pages I had 5 I had to redo once.
>>
>>223750389
To be clear you need to create a custom device under the devices tab under the gear. Just give it a made up name and type in the resolution of the pages, then save it.

Tank raws are sometimes the way to go though. They can have improved art and even extra pages in some cases. A few series I've read even had rough sketches in the magazine chapters due to the mangaka not taking a break when they needed one.

Every group that's relying on an anonymous ripper should have at least one member that's able to program and use a reader's js code to their advantage. And which light novels do people think are well and poorly written in English? Why?
>>
>>223767424
>Isn't deepl also pretty good?
Maybe if you're MTL, or on a super-tight schedule and need to get that TL out in an hour's time.
In all other cases, you should be _rewriting_ your English output, instead of simply copypasting it from the machine. Otherwise, what's your actual contribution anyway?

This isn't to say that DeepL (or Google Translate and the like) don't have their place; I often run them anyway as a sanity check just in case I've misunderstood something. But it's precisely because you can't feed context into the machine (as >>223739674 elaborates) that you have to adjust the text yourself, and at that point I find it smoother to just rewrite the entire line anyway.
>>

Deepl is shit because it completely rewrites the sentence from the bottom up. It's easy to make it trip up and output nonsense.

Thanks. I was thinking of writing a fantasy story. I'm considering having my first novel be a tribute to Miura and call it something like Berserk Eulogy. Winrar? I use python's zipfile without compression. I found that a higher compression level makes almost no difference in filesize, which makes sense for already compressed images.

The kind of compression you can do with Winrar is completely lossless. Unless the archive gets damaged, any file you put in there will still be the same after decompressing it.

Yes, always. But you're supposed to use the jaded network anyway.

You get what you pay for typically. If Amimaru pays garbage wages then odds are they'll end up with alot of bottom of the barrel freelancers.

I've also noticed they prioritize speed (so they can make more money), so as long as you're fast by their standards, they'll likely think you're doing well even if your translations aren't that good. Speed is always at the cost of accuracy.
>>
>>223792490
The jaded network is incomplete and I've seen sound effects used in very odd ways by some mangaka. I can usually guess what a sound effect is by looking at what's going on in the panel. Sound effects don't usually have only one meaning. You could probably guess 90% of it to save time.
>>
Do you get any say in what you translate for Amimaru? Like is there a pool of projects to pick from or do they just hand you random things? And what publishers do they usually work with? I heard they were involved with Tokyo Revengers but I'm not too familiar with them.
>>
>>223792779

Small tip for typesetters who can't shape a line in a bubble perfectly roundly: you can change the text size from 100% to 95%, lower the VA just a bit, and individually kern the letters so they are more crowded, and the readers usually don't notice too much.
>>
is there an easier way to stroke text in gimp?

Uploading to mega allows anyone to download it as a zip. Also you may want to compress the files down smaller with something like PNGauntlet. Makes loading in every instance slightly quicker.

If I had to go back to typesetting, I'd use Scribus. I've tried it before and while it has a few bugs that make your life harder, it also has some handy features Photoshop doesn't even dream of. GIMP for cleaning and simple single-page jobs.

Ah that's good to know. The thing is that I installed them when I didn't know about font managers. I do want to uninstall them now but it sounds like a real pain in the ass to do it manually and a bit risky too if I end up uninstalling a system font.
Thanks for the input anon

You can also upload to dex when it's reenabled with a a line about where you can be contacted about commissions. You don't even need to admit to being a newbie, just play your freebie adverts off as existing commissions.

Just make sure to be realistic about when your work will be done and be good about communication. Make sure not to take on more work than you can handle, especially if the person wants the work done in a small timeframe.

Make sure to set up a paypal. If you don't want them to know your real name, set up a business one as a sole proprietorship. And set up any rules or content standards you might have, like "I won't do BL" or "I won't do chapters for a series already being translated". But if you want maximum money, just do everything.

In my case my system told me that system fonts couldn't be uninstalled, so you shouldn't be able to. There was a case where a non-essential font popped up a yellow triangle in my typesetting program after I uninstalled it, but I just restored it from Recycle Bin after that.

The raws are already modified by the JPEG artifacts.
At a low denoising strength, the result is 100% certainly closer to the uncompressed original than the JPEG is.

I want to read the rest of >>223745492 but I don't feel like telling a scanning group I don't donate to how to do their jobs. I'm seriously considering just doing a ghetto-shit scan using jisho.

Of course not, that's completely unrelated.
The current manga epubs are literally 1 html file per page, and the html file contains exactly 1 IMG element.
This would just remove the html layers and have images directly.

I don't do memes, but I do tend to change some things to how I perceive each character. I feel like some people go straight up localization and charge large parts of the script.
>>
Let's not forget "substance fillers" where the translator adds entire lines to pad out the bubbles.
>>
- Run all lines through machine TL
- Localize the results since it was never going to be very accurate anyway, so it might as well as least sound fluent and entertaining in English
- Typeset at least adequately to
make release seem to have some quality/legitimacy.
- Watch most readers eat my garbage up.
>>
>>223864046
>Stereotypical dwarf character whose speech pattern includes old geezer speak like "Washi zo" and "Suman".
>In translation have him say things like "Aye, lad".
Stuff like that?
>>
>>223864643
That would be what I'd do. As for localizers I was talking about the ones that make up random stuff and replace actual lines with it, because they think it sounds cool, deep, or funny.
>>
>>223864643
I wish I was from a place that had an interesting regional dialect. I absolutely do not have the conscience to use irish/scottish/australian/south african, even for jokes.
>>
I became jaded after realizing people will defend bad translations since it's "better than nothing". And then there are the bad translators. "We worked hard on this". "All these clearly mistranslated lines were just open to interpretation". Or they just tune out criticism entirely and change nothing when it's clear the group isn't fit to be translating anything. I swear there's people who learned the language in less than a month and have deluded themselves into thinking they're fluent.
>>
>>223865054
Where are you from, Utica?
>>
>>223865087
Machine TL is only hated when it's clearly machine TL. As long as you phrase it to sound good in English most people won't care. But that means in most cases you have to be a native English speaker.
>>
>>223865203
Officially ESL, but I can fake it well enough. Just not any specific region/country.
>>
>>223865087
People will defend garbage they enjoyed everywhere in every medium and genre with the exact same arguments and retorts. At some point you just need to start ignoring people on a certain side of the bell curve or you'll always be angry and arguing. Don't measure the value of your work by their approval.
