Let me give some more info about the math here and a basic theory about how it applies to Shimeji.

What topologists mean here is that a coffee mug is homeomorphic to a donut. That means that there is
some function, or a mapping, between points on the mug to the points on a donut. Further, this
function is invertible - that means that two points on the mug can't go to the same point on the
donut, for example, because then there would be no way to get back. Finally, it's continuous,
which in topology, means that if you invert a whole region of close-together points on the donut,
you get a region of close-together points on the mug. The function doesn't just randomly
send the points wherever it likes, it has to keep close points close together.

I don't study analysis but I do study algebra. A related (metaphorically) concept is that of the
dual. Duals in mathematics are two kinds of structures that are really the "same" thing from a
different perspective. The reason they're interesting is that results, theorems, or proofs about one
of the structures automatically result in theorems about the other one "for free"; you just have to
apply the dual function to the theorem.

(1/2)
>>
>>206403844
I wish I was smart enough to learn more than just the basics of topology.

>>206403926
One interesting example in computational geometry is that of the Voronoi diagram and Delaunay
triangulation, two constructions that are incredibly useful in 3D modelling, statistics,
simulations, you name it. Someone figured out they were duals of each other, so instantly
all the decades of research about the Voronoi diagram now also applied to the Delaunay
triangulation, and vice-versa. Any code that people wrote to make Voronoi diagrams? Trivially,
you could modify it to make Delaunay triangulations too. And so on. The reason why this is nice
is because certain types of proofs and algorithms are much easier for humans to come up with
on one of the duals but not the other, because it ends up being "simpler" in that one. But once
that's done, they can use the dual to come up with the similar result about the other one.

So what is the point of the Shimeji Simulation? Is the simulation supposed to mimic the real wor
ld?
If there is a transformation from our world to the simulation and back, that's incredibly useful
.
You probably find it easier to think and reason about the simulation than our world. So if there
is
this sort of homeomorphism between our world and the simulation, any lessons or thoughts or thin
gs
you understand about the simulation, you can apply the reverse homeomorphism (remember I said it
's
invertible!) and learn about our own world as well.

You got it. The short summary is: tkmiz might want you to think of the manga, and the simulation, as a microcosm or reflection of your own life and of our world. Can you apply the thoughts you have while reading the manga to similar situations in your own life?

For example, from the beginning I had always connected with Shimeji. I don't have any egg friends around but I have tried going on walks more often (chapter 7). And I've spent some time listening to the rain during thunderstorms this summer.

They do kind of look like pills now that you mention it. When I first read it I thought they were crumbs. Like the sister ate one of the rations and the other is for Shijima. Also I want to get the sister's name at some point. If book girl (actually we got her name this chapter) knows the sister maybe when they meet again we'll get her name.

Thanks for explaining that anon, that puts a lot of things into perspective.
I could see the idea of Homeomorphism as an overarching theme for the manga, even if the SS world isn't a literal simulation.
It's also pretty neat that Miss Mogawa always liked digging holes and her love for making donut shaped objects is homeomorphic for her love for digging holes, which explains this page >>206401279, as shimeji figures out that holes=donuts.

>>206401052
I wonder if tkmiz will explore addiction/dependency more with SS. If we still go with the simulation theory, then perhaps Mogawa being addicted to digging could just be a manifestation of her being programmed for a singular purpose.
>Me too, Shimeji-chan’s the only one who can make me feel good now...
Fucking nice.

I wonder if tkmiz just recently read something about topology, found it interesting and felt like putting it in for fun.>>206401223
>>206401223
The thing about specialization is true, I wonder where tkmiz is going with it, Perhaps the head objects are just the next step of hyper specialization.
I also thing that Mogawa is not specialized to be a teacher, but rather to dig holes. I wonder what Shijima and Majime's speicializations are, if they have any (or will develop any)
>>206401279
I fucking love this panelling, tkmiz really is making the most of the medium. I'm starting to think that her ultimate goal might be to make a through-hole and really turn the Earth into a donut. That might reach some limit of the simulation.

>>206401502

I mainly translated it myself and had my translator mainly do quality control. I'm not really good with handwritten stuff, most of the time SFX are self explenatory anyways and I'm using Gimp to typesett, so they usually don't look that nice. It would also look pretty dumb if some pages had them and some don't, which is why I left them out for now. I'll probably add them later before uploadingit. Personal sites and fc2 blogs were so much easier to filter out food pics and stills from gundam and only see the art of lolis and shotas getting ripped apart. >>206422435
/tkmiz/ is the only place I post now a days as well, but that's mainly because everything else is so shit now. Threads like this that are reserved for once a week or once a month tend to be way better.
>>
>>206422435
>>206422725
there's a few other threads that I still post in and a couple other imageboards, but like /tkmiz/ they're mostly infrequent and less tense than the rest of 4chan. It's a frustrating catch-22 where I like the slower threads/boards because they're typically laid-back and the posters don't seem to have their heads up their asses, but then their discussions are that much slower as well.
>>
>>206423114

I've been updating the media list because I don't know if the anon that made it is still around.
I think I have most of them since the last version I could find on pastebin plus I added some other references that weren't there, but I'm sure there's plenty of missing references so say so if I missed something.
Also trying to update the dead mega links with the filenames from the tkmiz pictures folder, since I wanna make a monthly torrent alternative for people to download the folder which would include the media list in there.
Anyways here's the list:

Anonymity also naturally attracts people who genuinely ARE devoid of empathy, for better or worse. Take it from me, i'm like that too, but i barely display it in motion.
While we're at it, can't help but share an observation. A lot of vent threads have a leitmotif of guilt, fear of letting people down, guild of letting people down, etc. In a way, being "decent human" is a toll that's sinking a sizeable amount of depressed people. Maybe they would be happier letting that mindset go altogether, if the push is about to come to shove.

this isn't the first time someone's been uncomfy and unfortunately it probably won't be the last. It's a symptom of the modern internet and our space in it. It's part of the reason why these threads try to stay around the 27th and not appear too frequently otherwise.

Personally, I'm not too crazy about the suicide posting either. The threads are better when they focus on zetsubou and living in it. But I think that comes to us all as a natural progression and so these anons are people who aren't quite there yet. It's better for us to be an example and show how life is still livable and the ways you can enjoy it.

Its the fear of not being a productive or accomplished human rather than the fear of not being a decent one (from a moral perspective). And sometimes they also just have a mental illness that causes depression aside from the psychological issues that they might also have.

That wasn't "take over" in an accusatory sense or anything. I just meant that I don't have a special attachment to it or anything, so if someone else felt strongly that they wanted to maintain it, that would be fine. I've been keeping it up-to-date with newer art; people are usually pretty quick to point out when a new piece of artwork is from something. But there's still tons of old art that is probably from media that I just don't know.

>>206438433
Mental illness isn’t romantized. The field of psychology and psychiatry just advanced further. And places like Japan don’t have it and they have insane suicide rates. Mental illness not being taboo helps people, it’s not like it’s a fad anyways. You get diagnosed by an actual doctor. This sort of thinking is more harmful than supposed romantization.
>>206438160
Well you through a phase of suicide ideation if you’re doing bad enough and it makes you vulnerable to actually attempt it when you sink even lower.
>>206437983
Those suicide victims may have been saved if they got to zetsuboupost and also get therapy. Also its been proven you hover around the idea for a while, its not like you randomly decide life is not worth living and promptly succeed. There’s a leap between deciding your life isn’t worth living and feeling worse enough to carry it out. Its not an easy affair.

I agree with you, the romanticization of mental illnesses such as depression and suicide reminds me of how people romanticize nihilism.
People embrace nihilism as it frees them from any sort of responsibility from their lives, nothing matters, life is a shit, i wish i didn't exist and so on.
>>
>>206439226
>its not possible to have a complex discussion because of the site format
What are you even talking about you can have any kind of discussion in any kind of space. If two individuals here had the capacity to have an in depth conversation there's nothing stopping them.
>>
>>206439226
Regardless of if it exists or not, it does not hurt anyone and actually helps, there’s just this stigma that people jump on the bandwagon for attention and it’s retarded on many levels, first because the attention is just empty words or evasion of the topic so it is not comfortable to bring it up, second because if you do have a mental illness you get diagnosed by a psychiatrist who is a doctor. The attention seeking stigma is just a toxic brainlet take that hurts more than some random and wrong stereotypes that appear sometimes in media. Those are annoying but not thst harmful in comparison. Plus mental illness exists regardless, its not like it spreads because you bring attention to it. If you don’t acknowledge it you just get a high hikki rate and high suicide rate which is obviously worse.
>>
>>206439459
Nihilism isn’t even what people think it is. It is actually uplifting, life has no meaning but you get to give meaning to it yourself. The nihilism = depressed emo type is a misinterpretation and an incorrect stereotype spread by the media. Nihilism as a philosophy isn’t depressing, especially if you don’t have faith to begin with.

Got not none? Get at it, if you truly had a problem you wouldn't be wasting your time pitying yourself for some attention on the internet.

To elaborate further more, no one can help you but yourself, a professional will guide sort out your problems and tackle them one by one, but it is the individual who has to deal with the.
This is why i'm against burdening people with your problems when you avoid dealing with them, such as the suicidal zetsubouposters.

I have dealt with enough depressed people to know that venting, sharing your pain through the internet does not help, but worsens as you push people away from you as you never get better, and continue to talk nothing but depression related topics focusing often on the one with the problem.
Are you afraid of people? Find a professional, and consider behavioral therapy.
>>
>>206439697
We are basically friends Anon, and some people have trouble opening up and start here through the anonimity and get advice or comfort so they can go on with those things you mentioned. I haven’t vented here like that I think, I just like those people knowing they can bring it up. I usually try to help like last thread. It’s thanks to people like you that tkmiz is not okay. There’s just a terrible misunderstanding when it comes to these topics, like what I explained here. >>206439528
On top of that, for example I actually self diagnosed myself at 15-16 after watching Eva, before that my life was absolute hell and it didn’t cross my mind that I could ask for help or that mental illnesses could be there at all. So I did get help through what you’d call attention seeking to my family, got to talk to a psychiatrist eventually and I was obviously grossly wrong in my self diagnosed but that proved to be the pathway of finding out what kind of shit I actually did have and prevented me from offing myself early (or more likely get sent to a psych ward after reaching a critical point). Not many people fake things for attention because the type of attention you get sucks. In fact I’d say the vast majority of people that “attention seek” have a legitimate problem (though not always an illness). Otherwise you would just farm (You)s being an asshole like that Anon here, way more comfy for such people.
>>
>>206440306
>We are basically friends Anon
Huevo why are you on /a/?
>>
>>206440127
That’s honestly a retarded post Anon. I have helped myself and others through this sort of shit. Argue this thread is not the venue for that and you have a defensible argument, but this idea is absolutely stupid, especially since talking to other people about your issues and getting help are not mutually exclusive but the opposite. And people tend to start like this before they manage to find professional help. Also an obsession with behavioral is literally a byproduct of the American Education meme. People react differently to different branches and some help certain illnesses more than others.
>>
>>206440121
>Avoid discussion about problems concerning the community that frequent these threads.
You sound like the sort of people who will cover their ears and start chanting so they don't listen what they don't want to hear.
As i oppose the depressed posters i offer ideas that actually help, like in this post:

>>206435815
And man, venting, burdening others with your problems and staying in that depression hole will only isolate you more.

So, yo keep the tkmiz archive or the tkmiz pastebin and shut up.
>>
>>206440306
>So I did get help through what you’d call attention seeking to my family, got to talk to a psychiatrist
Heh, who would have thought, talking to your family instead to a stranger on the net actually works.
>>
>>206440515
>And man, venting, burdening others with your problems and staying in that depression hole will only isolate you more.
Did you literally just say talking to others will isolate you more? On how many layers of mental gymnastics are you operating here? By the way no worthwhile person considers someone talking about personal issues to be a burden. Since you say you speak through personal experience of dealing with depressed people, I can safely say you are not a person that’s nice to be around with. You were the burden all along. Its even telling since there were 0 suicideposts and yet here we are with your triggered ass.
>>
I want Egg and Shimeji to do this.
>>
>>206440507
>People react differently to different branches and some help certain illnesses more than others.

This is why you talk to close social circle if there is any or directly to someone who will actually help you, venting is not the same as talking your problems to someone, when that person is someone who cares about you or knows professionally how to deal with those problems and can provide assistance.

Usually some counseling will work just fine, if not, some antidepressants help if it's for a short period of time, behavioral therapy helps too if you are not completely socially inept to practice what you already know but never get to practice due to being antisocial.
>>
>>206440963
why?
>>
>>206440592
I only did that after talking online. They are not mutually exclusive and in fact many people like me start online since its way easier and from there you move on to real life stuff, and even then support from online friends has been as valuable as professional help, couldn’t have had one without the other. It’s a hard truth to swallow in this decadent society of false dichotomy and misinformation, but different types of support always go hand in hand and it doesn’t matter where it comes from as long as it pushes you on a path of improvement. Having good friends of any kind helps you go forward in treatment.

I cared about those Anons and had good advice that worked. Other Anons were helping equally well. People don’t just randomly decide to go get therapy when they’re isolated, support from people that cares about them is invaluable in getting there. Also your views on mental illnesses are pretty rudimentary, a psychologist helps (not all counselors are even psychologists in the US I think, haha) but if you have an actual mental illness you usually need meds and there’s many types, you don’t just get antidepressants for being depressed since the depression can be a byproduct of a different illness, and with meds you still go to a psychologist in parallel for optimal treatment.
>>206441204

there wasn't much happening beyond the obvious other than Mogawa sensei's sculptures and that possibly Yomi senpai might know Shimejii's sister. The main thing to note there is that every single sculpture has a single hole in it making them all homeomorphic objects. The definition of what that means has been gone over and linked to a few times already in the thread.
What this means for further plot purposes is unknown but it seems like Mogawa sensei is really going at it with the current hole they're digging.

Topology is the study of mathematics where all structures that can be "continuously deformed" into each other are treated as the same. So that includes stretching, rotating, squeezing, etc, but not ripping or tearing. Topology is mainly used in physics but there are also applications in robotics, computer science and computational geometry (i.e., vidya).

what other depressing or otherwise relatable works?
I saw the manga list in the pastebin and none of them really seem similar to tkmiz to me (though I don't recognize some, I will check those out). Yuru yuri, nichijou, hinamatsuri, eizouken. Artistically they're very different of course but I thought Inio Asano's Solanin was similar to SSR. As for Shimeji, maybe Neko ga Nishi Mukya (https://mangadex.org/title/26618/neko-ga-nishi-mukya) or even Flower by Matsumoto Taiyou (https://mangadex.org/title/1220/flower-matsumoto-taiyou). I know they're not very similar in terms of plot or characters or anything. Just the overall atmosphere of SoL but with a general oppressive anxiety in the air. Like in Sartre's Nausea.
>“I am. I am, I exist, I think, therefore I am; I am because I think, why do I think? I don't want to think any more, I am because I think that I don't want to be, I think that I . . . because . . . ugh!”
>“People who live in society have learnt how to see themselves, in mirrors, as they appear to their friends. I have no friends: is that why my flesh is so naked?”

Has anyone read No Longer Human? How is it? I feel bad for putting it off given tkmiz gave it an explicit call-out.

It's definitely Roland Barthes. He's quite difficult to understand, though, which is somewhere between ironic and fitting given his subjects.

I finished the GLT show and am currently working my way through the manga, on volume 4 now. I've heard mixed things about Shimeji Simulation, is it a good read after I finish GLT?
>>
>>206474774
I really like it and if these threads are anything to go by it seems most people that enjoyed GLT will also like SS. With that said, SS is very strange and surreal, so it's definitely not for everyone. I'd say give it a try and see for yourself.

It's got a similar feel so if you like tkmiz you'll probably like SS too, but it's also a lot more surreal and disjointed. Like, I still can't tell you what it's about.

Take care anons, stay safe.
The tkmiz thread is tired now, let it rest for a couple of weeks so that it may recover.

If you're enjoying SSR you're probably gonna enjoy SS, it has a lot of SoL elements like SSR and the post-apocalypse survival elements swapped with somewhat depressing surrealism, and just like SSR, it's filled with existentialism trough and trough.

Goodbye for another month /tkmiz/ friends.
Try and come back with something interesting to share or at least do something interesting for yourselves while you're away.
Read a book, eat some fish or try to enjoy the world we live in. It's not so bad once you learn to live with it.
I expect to see you all back here again next month, understand?
>>
>>206476614

most discord servers are the same as irc servers, there's individual channels once you're connected to one. The main advantage that discord has is image embedding, audio/video streaming and a cancerous user interface.
where people find servers?
I guess from whatever twitch streamer they follow would have one or one their friends set up. I don't really bother with discord, I have an IRC group that I visit and that's enough.

If you want to get back into it I'd recommend short stories. Here are a few. They can be at times difficult to read (even more so because they are short) but stick with it and it's ok to skip over parts you don't understand fully, you can always reread them since they're so short.

Borges - Library of Babel (hey that sounds familiar, maybe it should be in the tkmizcore pastebin) - https://maskofreason.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/the-library-of-babel-by-jorge-luis-borges.pdf

Borges - Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius - http://art.yale.edu/file_columns/0000/0066/borges.pdf

Kafka - In the Penal Colony - https://www.kafka-online.info/in-the-penal-colony.html

Bradbury - A Sound of Thunder - http://www.astro.sunysb.edu/fwalter/AST389/ASoundofThunder.pdf

Of course you can always checkout the pastebin: https://pastebin.com/RcK067EH. There may be a more updated one floating around somewhere...
