>Why japanese do everything on the floor? A chair is a hard concept? They sometimes do no even have beds.
>They sometimes do no even have beds.
You explained it yourself. The tatami space doubles as a bedroom. Which is why mats are preferred over a hard floor.

And putting normal furniture on them ruins the tatami mats. Same with shoes.
>>

That room will look like absolute shit after a few months. And the benefit of using futon instead of beds is obvious, you can store them away during daytime to make space for other things and lay them out again when you want to sleep. Especially in small apartments it's a good way to use space efficiently, since you no longer need a separate bedroom.

I don't have furniture and just sit on the floor (hardwood). Often in seiza, or I do that turned out legs thing little girls do, or western crossleg style, or I have a small cushion. I just alternate every 20-30 minutes. Sometimes I'll sit on my bed (shikibuton) or push all my blankets into a mound as a sofa of sorts, it's very comfy.
Fuck chairs.
>>
>>181691354
>hardwood
I thought the Japanese sat on the floor because the tatami is comfy enough, sitting on hardwood sounds tiresome. At least you got a cushion.
>>
>>181691441
I'm not japanese so idk about tatami...anyway I find it comfy enough. On the floor you can roll around or sit however you want, just lounge all over the place. chairs you can only sit like 3 different ways so it's restricting. and with a chair now you need a desk and 9 other things, it's bothersome.

you can literally see the shower head in the picture you dumbass.
however in japan nightly baths are most common, showers are a rare "i'm in a fucking hurry" kind of thing. they take bathing serious there.
when you bathe in japan you scrub yourself up with soap, rinse off with the showerhead then jump in the bath after your clean.

>>181688039
in most places in japan you pack your futon away after waking up and roll it out again before you sleep.
you air it out over your balcony through the day to keep bedbugs and mould out of it.
>>
>>181691822
yea the nice thing about tatami is it's got a bit of cushion to it despite being a hard surface, plus it's really really easy to keep clean.
disadvantage though is freshly laid tatami literally smells like vomit for the first 6 months after it's laid down.

Sit on the seat and use the shower to wash yourself while running the bath. Once clean, get into the back to soak. Families will use the same bath water and men will usually shower/bath before women. This is where that thing in anime comes from about girls being embarrassed to go first (because the guy will get the girl soaked bath water).

When I lived in Japan I just showered in the bath because it was fast. Running bath took way too much time and I cbf waiting for the bath to run.

That being said, Japanese bath houses are incredible.

Every toilet has a bidet in Japan

What is common in Japan are toilets where the bidet is included into the flush part thingy of the toilet

So if you are finished with the toilet you are cleaning your hands and the used water is also used to flush the toilet.

Japan has pretty significant poverty. You don't see much of it because the government has a fairly active policy of allowing slums and tiny SROs in out-of-sight areas. You're not technically homeless if you have a permanent shanty or rented closet.

You can see homeless people in every larger station in Tokyo and parks.

Though they will never annoy people for money and are moving somewhere else where the rush hour begins. In fact there are many parks where they take care of cats.

I saw many of them in Ikebukuro and in that one park close to Sunshinecity 60
>>
>>181701509
>Showering uses 18l per minutes

That depends a lot on the type of showerhead and how open you set it. Of course you can waste any amount of water if you're stupid about it.

Wet yourself, turn the shower off while you apply soap, shampoo, etc, then rinse, done. The water shouldn't be running for more than two minutes altogether.

nah, it sucks. Most Japanese apartment buildings suck shit and have no insulation, or heat.

You're basically sleeping in a stale smelling closet having to rely on cheap heaters or fans because the lack of insulation means your apartment is always the wrong temperature. Futons are not comfortable and the only people who use them are either poor or weirdo nationalists who insist on shit like tatami-mat floors and the like because they don't like western furniture.

The entry level family homes are pretty comfy though IMO- and waste a lot less space than most western designs if they don't tend to have the same problem of no central air or heat.

The post you are replying to is a normal studio apartment, probably around 700-800 USD/mo which is easy to find in america. That isn't close to japanese poor, for closer things go to Gaijin pot or the like, look at the 10mx12m places, that are shared bathrooms/shower closest in the halls, room has maybe a sink + stove + mini fridge
>>
>>181707383
Yeah. I was there for a little over a year as an exchange student in high school and basically it felt like no building had adequate insulation.

But at the same time the Japanese are such pussies about it being too hot or cold. I'm from the rural midwest so I'm used to summers that can hit 100F+ (~38C) to -20F (-28C). I'd be out in like 40-50F weather (which is perfectly comfortable for most people where I'm from) without a coat and my classmates and complete strangers would think I was going to freeze to death. Then in the summer I'm walking around in jeans in 90F weather and everyone looks like they're gonna melt.

And this is from the same people who for some reason will proudly talk about how Japan experiences all for seasons.

Bit further south than that, but yeah basically thereabouts since that whole area basically does the whole thing where you can have a summer where it hits 100+F and a winter that hits -20F or lower (we had a week a few years back where it hit -50F with windchill).

We have a lot of high school exchange students and foreign university students where I live and it's hilarious watching them experience their first summers and winters here.

I was on the bus with a QT Japanese girl here last year and it was the first good snow and it was near 0F and we were talking about the weather. "It so cold! Lucky it doesn't get worse right?" and I said, "Actually it gets a lot colder than this, winter basically is just starting." She said "Ohhhh Nooooooooooooo". It was pretty cute. I hope she didn't freeze to death because she rode regularly and was dressed up like an Eskimo at like 30F.

San Francisco has ~7000.

San Francisco has ~900K population total. For every 1000 people, there's 7.7 homeless in San Francisco.

Japan has 126 M people. Their rate is 1 homeless every 25,000.
US has ~1.5 M homeless and 325M people total. In other words, 1 out of every 200 people in the US is homeless.

Not even, Japan classifies shanty towns as a "home", same with people who occupy abandoned buildings. The Soup mission at the south end of Ginza is always filled with hundreds of homeless, why don't they count actual visitors to places like those? Oh because it would be easily 10x higher. Seeing tent villages, or small towns built out of spare plywood and doors is not too uncommon once you go a bit off the main paths. Japan is doing a good active amount to decrease the homeless problem but it's pretty damn up there.

From what I remember the government gives the homeless boxes and classifies them as houses to help their population numbers. They also mark most any unexplained death as a suicide; because suicide looks better than murder on paper. Then there are vans that will kidnap homeless off the street and drop them off deep in the mountains. I remember a couple years ago where someone was posting images of it. One man's foot was black and half of it had busted off.

Be honest, /a/, how small was your first apartment?

>600$/mo. (CAD)
>just over 300 square feet

It was pretty comfy, though. Had a small washroom with the necessities (toilet with bidet, sink, bath/shower combo), small kitchen with apartment-sized appliances (small oven/stove, small fridge, small microwave (above stove), small sink) and not a lot of counter space (enough for a kettle and toaster, and to do some cutting), but it had this nice "open" concept to it, a small balcony (with a laundry tree insert, even), and a nice big window.

Only thing that sucked was the window didn't open, and the lighting situation. No ceiling lights, and the outlets were oddly spaced. Would up getting a decent table and desk lamp.

My "bedroom" was a hide-a-bed couch, with a little room partition. Had a small coffee table and a small TV, which moved out of the way no problem. And in the last little corner I had my desk. Small table in he "kitchen", should add.

Pretty poverty-tier apartment, really. But at least it was cheap, and I managed to save up and buy a house.

i'm not saying that a male character succeeding is wish fulfillment, you made that accusation yourself. I'm saying that when a character has no real positive qualities, is a fucking geek that is described as "an everyday kid," isn't particularly attractive, and can't talk to girls properly, and then suddenly gets a harem of cute girls that want his dick, that's when you enter the realm of wish fulfillment. That's stuff like Highschool DxD, Eromanga Sensei, and OreImou. Stuff like Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc. that have actually definable character traits that might make them desirable, are not wish fulfillment.

The flaw with your argument is that human civilization advances regardless of the economic state of the world. People in the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s all believed that now was better than any other time in the past because obviously they were doing something right.

You could easily argue that one of the worst periods in American history (the Great Depression) was the result of capitalism failing and the effects were widespread. There's nothing preventing us from having another massive economic depression too because capitalism is prone to boom-bust cycles and if you're really unlucky they can cause chain reactions that blow up the economic well-being across the world.

Attributing it all to capitalism would be remarkably silly. People in China believe that China is the reason why the world is in such a great state right now and would you be inclined to believe them? Can you name a period in human history that was better than the time before China became a super power?

I have to hand it to the Japanese, their mid-size apartments are comfy as fuck and I wish they'd adopt them over here. Those practical kitchens, balconies where you can dry laundry, reasonable small appliances, the general layout, you name it.

Especially the kitchen situation. Nothing's worse than a small North American apartment with a North American kitchen shoved into it, eating up more than half the floor space.
