How do they know that the SETI instruments are turned on? that they even work? How did they test them for calibration?

How do they know the ayys are using radio for comms? How do they know the ayys haven't digitized themselves, or even transcended our percieved reality?
If there are any advanced aliens within detection range, they're either hiding from us or are on their way to take the nukes away from us, because they fucking heard the exoatmospheric tests no doubt.

What are they calibrated to? The WOW signal?

It is a complex claim about a cosmos. The powers are certainly living people too. It is a disappointment to my mind.

Space is very noisy in radio frequencies. Radio Astronomy is a thing. In fact, it's how they discovered that there's a very compact, very "bright" radio source in the center of the Milky Way galaxy that they named Sagittarius A*. Physicists eventually figured out that it must be from the effects of the super massive black hole at the center of the galaxy. Other naturally occurring radio phenomena include pulsars (rapidly rotating neutron stars), the Sun, and Jupiter, among many others. All of these can be used to calibrate radio telescopes, and to verify that they're turned on.
