Any type of trance music is welcome in this thread.

>How do you make these webms exactly?
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/WebM

>My song is too long! How do I bypass the board's time limit?
After encoding your webm, open your hex editor of preference and look for the following hex value: 448988
The 8-digit string after it is the webm's duration value
Change it to any of the following:
(44 89 88)41 12 4F 80 (5 min /wsg/ limit)
(44 89 88)40 FD 4C 00 (2 min other board limit)
(44 89 88)3F F0 00 00 (1 ms, funky timeline)

When Armin was actually good.
He started going downhill after Benno De Goeij from Rank1 started ghost-producing for him, and he went to shit when he joined the shitty trouse fad of the early 2010s. Nowadays he's just a shell of his former self and he rarely makes decent tracks anymore (the only three good modern tracks of his that I can think of are Lifting You Higher, Stardust (co-produced by Jean-Michel Jarre) and Ready To Rave (in collaboration with W&W))

-b:v = video bitrate

-b:a =audio bitrate

Head over here to see some examples:
https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html
>>
>>2897897
Or more specifically its the number you enter after those two terms which which become the approx bitrate.

i tried that and file size didn't change, i'll try again since i probably entered it incorrectly. is this split between the video bit rate or should i just do one or the other? I really appreciate your help and i'm certain i've seen that link before but something new i just saw it that ffmpeg can transcode a VOB file. I'll keep playing around.
>>
>>2899142
Protip: don't waste unnecessary bytes on video if it's only a static thumbnail. Here's what I do:
- Encode thumbnail as one frame video (using the -frames:v 1 option) (don't add sound just yet) (you can specify a video bitrate here to whatever, I usually do -b:v 1M because it only takes as much as neccessary for one frame)
- Encode sound to using libvorbis alone (no video involved in this step)
- Combine both files produced in two previous steps into one webm by without re-encoding (-c copy option)
- Optionally hex edit the duration if it's longer than 5 minutes
I find this method works pretty well, and the video portion of webm takes usually somewhere between 30 to 200kB, leaving almost whole 4 megabytes to audio (which usually amount to around 72kbps for an ~8 minute recording in my case)
>>
>>2899171
i like your approach. I'm actually attempting the opposite-bare min audio with semi decent video but long video. Again, thanks to all who replied and OP for starting this thread. Last time i'll spam the thread. take care all.
>>
>>2899185
>semi decent video but long video

Its pretty much one or the other. Video requires far more info than audio to achieve a decent result. Trade offs can be made with frame rate, resolution and bit rate.

Wanted: Simple ffmpeg example to insert thumbnail first frame on the likes of this.

>>

great song
and as for ffmpeg (assuming video and thumbnail have the same size)
ffmpeg -i source_video -i source_thumbnail -filter_complex '[0:v][1:v]overlay=enable=eq\(n\,0\)[vout]' -map '[vout]' -b:v libvpx -b:v video_bitrate -c:a libvorbis -b:a audio_bitrate -f webm output.webm
(beware it'll essentialy re-encode whole video, so better not leave it as last thing to add)
If video and thumbnail are of different sizes, just scale it like so (in this example thumbnail is rescaled)
-filter_complex '[1:v]scale=w=<width>:h=-1[thumb];[0:v][thumb]overlay=enable=eq\(n\,0\)[vout]'
(-1 in height means scale preserving aspect ratio)
if you ever want to find out about options to some filter just do
ffmpeg -help filter=<filter_name>
>>
>>2911477
forgot to add you have to map audio to output as well -map '0:a' (in above command)
To make up for it, here's an example. Webm related was encoded using those exact two commands (two pass encoding)

ffmpeg -i System\ F\ vs\ Armin\ van\ Buuren\ -\ Exhale\ \(Official\ Video\)-uG0x0dobSQc.mp4 -f lavfi -i color=c=blue:s=320x240,drawtext=fix_bounds=true:font=Roboto:fontcolor=white:fontsize=30:x=\(w-tw\)/2:y=\(h-th\)/2:text='\\ System F^M vs^MArmin van Buuren^M -^M Exhale' -shortest -filter_complex '[0:v]scale=w=320:h=-1[svid];[svid][1:v]overlay=shortest=1:enable=eq\(n\,0\)[vout]' -map '[vout]' -map '0:a' -c:v libvpx -qmin 31 -crf 40 -qmax 48 -b:v 65k -an -pass 1 -y -f webm /dev/null

I had an old various artists CD of some trance music, and I remember this song that was called "friendship 7" the song was basically just a series of beeps and drums but I could never find it. Huh, I'm the original author of WebM Academy. I'm floored anyone even remembers that thread - it's been 4 years! Do you need anything in specific? I still have the text file and the webms, though I haven't updated anything since 2015.

Looking through it - there was a lot I got right (people laughed because I uneccessarily specified c:v and c:a - then the defaults changed to VP9 and Opus), but also some thing I got horribly wrong. I absolutely botched the 2pass section. You need to remove all quality control parameters (-crf, -qmax) then it works perfectly. These days I 2pass virtually every webm I encode. For a 4MB clip there's also no need for voiding the output on pass 1, which makes things way less convoluted.

A new version would probably also include metadata (bake your goddamn source into the file so it sticks to it!), a lot more filtergraphing, crop filter, overlay offsets and enable conditions, denoising filters (better quality for monochrome backgrounds), multi-part files by inserting keyframes and splitting (so you only encode the whole thing once and viewers can stitch the file back together locally), scale filter should use lanczos algorithm, in-line arithmetic (-b:v 4095*8/[seconds]), -g (fewer keyframes = smaller size), etc.

>>2848445
Does it not work anymore? I haven't used that in a while admittedly. They do change things around every once in a while or introduce new stuff. For instance, I haven't even looked into the cropdetect filter, which supposedly gets rid of black bars on its own.
>>
>>2956605
>Does it not work anymore?

I can't be sure. The fact I'm attempting to copy it from a graphical image rather than Ctrl C V its hard to know if it has changed of if I'm "typoing" it somehow. Also navigating a text file is so much easier when it comes to Ctrl f.

>I still have the text file
If you would be willing to dump that somewhere that would help determine what the answer to the above is.

I got a helpful answer here which I need to fully investigate sometime (and thanks to that anon) >>2911534
>one day I hope I'm not so tired

>I'm floored anyone even remembers that thread - it's been 4 years!

Yeah, I occasionally see it referenced on /wsr/ so you're definitely not the only one.

Alright, I did a cursory search and this seemed the easiest way to publish text anonymously. Was apparently used by IS and if it's good enough for them, it should do for me ;-)

justpaste [put dot here] it/6nvv0

I just copy-pasted the latest version of WebM Academy I had (October 2015) and wrote a short introduction. Enjoy.

Also - holy fuck, I just rewatched the intro I did for the thread for the first time in 4 years. Intentionally cringy and RLM-derivative, but damn it still puts a smile on my face. Guess my sense of humor stayed mostly the same. Reposted for nostalgic hilarity. (sorry for the off-topic webm)
