Reposting from the bottom of the last thread:
"Anyone know why a fresh install of gzdoom would just not allow inputs at all, once a game is started? At the menu everything works fine. But if I load into any map whatsoever, the controls no longer work. Not even esc, so I have to alt+f4 or alt+tab to quit.

I've tried multiple release versions now. I've tried several different doom wads. I've tried it with Brutal Doom and without. Nothing works. Hard to google for the problem too."

>>5808606
It's all fresh installs though, otherwise I'd suspect a corrupt .ini too. Actually now that I look, I don't think any of my gzdoom installs are even generating an .ini? Maybe that's it? It's not in my Program Files folder. It's just in C:\games\gzdoom.

This sucks ass. I can't even figure out how to search for this problem. The game is clearly RUNNING, it just won't take any kb/mouse input past the initial menus. Even in the menus, it freezes irreparably if I try to configure any controls. But up until then, both mouse input + arrow keys work fine for navigating the menus.
>>
>>5808584
It would be really nice to have a sourceport for modern compat, and also so one can make a mod to fix various glitches and questionable design decisions.

Finished up this map with some feedback from last night. Boom-compatible, no multiplayer, should support every difficulty.
>>
>>5808630
Fixed it. It was some antivirus software I have that scans for programs doing weird injections/file creations, VERY HELPFULLY not telling me when it is blocking a program from doing so, like it's fucking supposed to. Disabled that and it was fine. If anyone googles this problem later and wants a solution: it's probably either this, or some other overlay that is interfering with the gzdoom inputs. Apparently Discord and maybe Steam, maybe also Teamviewer type shit can do it.

Keywords in case anyone tries googling like I did: gzdoom no input, accepting input, taking input, keyboard input, mouse input, unresponsive, not responding, freezing, nothing happens.
>>
I have played Doom for years, but haven't gotten very good at it. I've beaten UV pistol start Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Master Levels (>cabal series), Evilution, Plutonia, and NRTFL. Currently stuck at map5 of Sigil.
I am very tempted to try mapping. Should I do that, or should I get better at the game first? I am worried that I might create some unbalanced trash if I don't know what I'm doing.

>>
>>5808673
Give it a go, with your experience you probably have some understanding of how the monsters work, and I imagine you might have some ideas for visuals.
Don't over exert yourself though, don't jump at making a 32 map megawad, that's a seriously daunting task, start with just something small, 2 or 3 maps at most, then if you feel you still have steam and ideas, do a couple of more maps, maybe you can eventually make it like an 8 map episode or something.

Also, this is just a pet peeve of mine, but please make sure to replace the sky texture with literally anything, so that it isn't the default Doom 2 brown clouds, along with replacing the music tracks with literally anything that isn't the default tracks of the first couple of Doom 2 levels.
You can outright just grab a sky and music tracks from any of the iwads (consider some mid or lategame Doom 2 tracks even), it'll make your maps feel much less "default" and more fresh.

Standalone games do happen, especially now with GZDoom being GPL complaint. But of them just end up being labors of love that are free. Still yet to see a commercial IWAD in the style of say, REKKR.

Mind you, some mappers do get hired to work on other faux-retro FPS.
>>
>>5809060
You should always have fuckton of SG ammo.
IIRC the only way to run out of ammo in Doom 2 is to have sub 35% accuracy, which means shooting 2 out of 3 shots into nothing.

>Bethesda ruined doom but they aren't the only ones. All these /vr/ kiddies that never play vanilla, they're just as guilty.

>>
>>5808847
It'd be remembered, but not nearly as strongly, the ability to play custom maps is one of Doom's big strengths, and why we even have Final Doom, and with the source code release in the late 90s it became far easier to modify the gameplay, allowing for more grandiose modifications.

How much less fun would Quake have been if people couldn't make maps and mods for it? A lot, even if the base game is very fun in itself.

>Standing for what's right is an identity.
>Believing in the power of art is an identity.
Neither of which you're doing here, if we were to ask the opinions of the devs who made Doom.
Making content for Doom is a multifaceted artistic process, and enabling people to make their own content for the game was in Carmack's and Romero's opinions The Right Thing To Do, that's why the source code is available.
Hell, if you asked the other devs, most of them would agree that it was a good thing, and we've had devs of later significant games get themselves started doing maps and mods for Doom, one of the most notable being Plutonia, not only being one of the best commercial wads, but the Casalis making even more vidya history later, another being American McGee, who made a couple of maps for Doom, then got hired to do some of the official maps for Ultimate Doom and Doom 2, and later making official maps for Quake.

if the game had been some kind of a symbolic and allegorical story about how oppressed women are, he'd probably love it. But unfortunately the game is just fun and not concerned with anything else, so there's no reason to pay attention to it, actually it's just an irritating exercise to pay attention to it because it doesn't hold your hand through its levels.

This /v/ post rings pretty true.

oh yeah, you get a chainsaw IN THE FIRST FUCKING LEVEL. It stunlocks anything smaller than a hell knight and instakills the hitscan zombies

I saw anons discussing wad difficulty and getting better last thread.

Scythe 2 is a better idea. There is something with the latest megawads which everyone is trying too hard to make their levels look cool but always repeating the same gameplay formulas. I haven't had fun with a megawad since Going Down.

I don't get nearly the same kick as playing AA or BTSX as I have with stuff like Scythe 2, and Kamasutra.
>>
>Gman thought the bowling bombs in Ion Fury were useless
Is he actually retarded? Also kinda funny how he says he barely used the other weapons because he thought they weren't that good. He says that you can just beat the game using the pistol and the shotgun/grenade launcher and then goes on to say that the UV equivalent was insanely difficult for him. Like gee I really wonder if those things have correlation. Also he complains about the game not having enough ammo and then complains that there is too much ammo for the bowling bombs. He also complains about hitscanners despite the game not having hitscanners. What the fuck was up with the review? Its like he really wanted to find reasons to shit on it.

DTWID and D2TWID were suggested and those are pretty solid. One can argue on just how much they succeeded in feeling like 93'/95' era iD Software maps, but that's what they went for, and the maps do play great.

I feel this weird feeling about using "special effects" (like from Realm 667), they do look cool but for some of them it feels like if you use one you're immediately obligated to use more. >D2TWID was better than its original counterpart anyway imo
I agree pretty strongly. It even does better maps which Doom 2 actually did well, for instance the TWID version of Dead Simple is probably one of the best Dead Simple clones made, which is high praise because they're traditionally rather terrible. It's one of my favorite mapsets for doing Doom 2 but better.

Doom 2 is a mixed bag but with some good levels, while D2TWID is much more consistently good. I guess that just sorta happened because nobody wants to contribute an intentionally weak map for the sake of authenticity, you always want fun maps.

If all it did was add some rain in some of the Plutonia maps, and maaaybe turned the stock Doom trees into some decent palm trees, I would have been fine with it, would have been pretty cool, outright, but what he did just looks so incredibly tacky and needlessly busy.

He did it. In a way, it's actually impressive because it seriously detects what map you're playing by looking at which actors are where.

Gman says "Plutonia is the worst Doom maps. Not because of the level design, but because the enemy placements are just too hard. Talk about artificial difficulty."

Alright I'll check it out.
I'm finding that if I play Plutonia kind of like I played Blood it works. Instead of running into a room and dodging things I end up having to flinch all the hitscan enemies and playing methodically. It's not bad but it does feel different.
>>
>>5809961
painkiller blacked.com edition is good*
the rest of the series is trash

painkiller's got interesting looking levels that are a chore to play, wonderfully inventive weapons, huge enemy variety, terrible boss fights and yet it all feels very samey because the level design was "model the level, make it look cool, figure out the gameplay later"
it plays more like doom 2016 than anything else, with literal endless wave arenas every alternate step

it's a good* game if you're into that sort of thing, just do yourself a favor and don't do any of the tarrot card challenges, even if they're must have for higher difficulties
>>
>>5809060
I had the exact same problem at Refueling Base on Doom 2 last week. I ended up running to the end. That was by far the hardest level for me. About 2 levels later there's plenty of ammo and I didn't have a problem after that.
>>
>>5810176
I remember playing it and not remembering much of it, so it's probably so-so
>>

That's really a new record of absence of self-awareness.
>>
>>5810852
scythe only goes full plutonia pretty late, around map 20-21

rest of the time it plays more like quake with short and sweet maps with cool encounters, which is why it's a favourite of literally everyone ITT

>>
>>5810860
When I was just starting out, I noticed in most shooters I found the "shotgun" equivalent and just used it til the end until I actually started playing the harder difficulties. Doom 2 for example actually forced me to start using the more powerful weapons that I had "saved" through all of Doom 1.
>>
>>5810863

When the weapon sprites from the early access started being used in guns, the ZDoom forum moderators went apeshit, because of community developers having worked on the game (mostly Mike12) they suddenly developed a moral need to police copyrighted assets used in mods.

It was too little, way too late for the community to start doing that shit, so they just pissed most people off.

After it got shat on from almost everywhere but the moderators and they sycophants, they swapped it to what amounts to a protection scheme, as long as you're in with them, they'll fuck with mods using your assets.

tl;dr They got centipedes in their vaginas and thought they could force the community to change a decades old practice.

I found them useful for making sure something explodes the moment I attack, since they detonate on impact with surfaces unlike the rollers that have to hit an enemy or lit (which takes a few seconds to explode). Also tripmine shenanigans.

>also this game desperately needed a "mighty foot" alternative and for it to instantly squash those annoying fucking spiders.
I agree on the mightyfoot; the quickswap to baton doesn't cut it. At least the alt-fire for the pistol makes quick work of the little bastards.

I think it's fine. Sometimes levels are completely linear, sometimes they are like hubs. They are not too long as well which I like. HL2 was worse.

This is a more minor complaint but I find it funny that he finds the one-liners annoying and make no sense when almost every video he makes has to shoehorn a 'Your Mom' and 'SCHWACKED' somewhere, even if nothing in the game calls for it.

I played through Blood for the first time this year on Pink on the Inside and I did not experience frustration with this. I had so much fun, playing on anything higher than that though and you get fucked hard by them.

I would recommend a custom difficulty where you put everything on pink on the inside but the enemy count to the normal amount.

I found the smg to be the best way to deal with large groups of them without wasting explosives on them.

if you want a custom difficulty, I recommend lightly broiled base (bosses not too spongy, sticks of dynamite flying your way vs bundles, slightly slower AI reaction time) with extra crispy enemy numbers
>>
Does the difficulty settings for Ion Fury change how many enemies show up? I wanna make sure I play on the setting that gives the most opposition
>>
>>5811659
Some pro tips
>jumping highly reduces cultists chance of hitting you, same with crouching
>when in combat, always keep on the move and move fucking fast, alternate between jumping around and crouching, play like you are a squirrel high on crack
>when not in combat, play slow, always check your corners to make sure you are not headed into a trap
>machine gun is mainly useful for stunlocking cultists

Also the game gets considerably easier and worseas it goes on.

OK, whichever Ion Fury designer that came up with those spider things who are synchronized to jump/dodge whenever I shoot at them and those flying fuckers who won't stand still should burn in hell.
Also, ammo goes down FAST. 90% of the time I am stuck with the revolver and killing those obnoxious flying things with is takes forever.

>>

>>
>>5811720
I haven't played the expansions. I guess episode 1 and 2 are interchangeable but personally I vastly prefer episode 1. 2 has a lot less cultists and it introduces a lot of Blood's other enemy types. The problem is that those new enemies are not that fun to fight against. Cultists may be bullshit but they are the core of Blood's combat. Without them the combat is just really bland and boring. Things like the ghosts or the gargoyles are just fucking annoying and it is almost impossible for them to kill you. Episodes 3 and 4 are both pretty bad on the whole. The lasts few levels of 4 really put a bad taste in my mouth and made me not want to continue on with the expansions.

Duke has a ridiculous amount of mediocre/bad levels in Episodes 2, 3 and 4. Blood to me had better late game levels without a doubt, also that game is just more fun to play in general so I never got tired of it. Plus Plasma Pak as a final episode is way fucking better than Episode 4 of Douk.

Phantom Express is cool, it's a neat gimmick, a comfy level, not going to hate on it, but it's certainly not better than the first 3 levels of LA Meltdown. I think I may agree with you on Overlooked Hotel, though, maybe Dark Side beats it.

pls no gib man throws pieces of his own flesh at you, lovingly rendered in 2 polygons, so he gets originality points
tanky leap frog is capable on instagibbing the player with no armor, it's a worthy opponent, like doom's flying skull on crack that takes 3 rockets to kill

Runs smooth as silk at 150-250 for me almost all the time despite Demo being choppy even when showing me 100-120.

Also GMan is REALLY bad at "scrounging for ammo" thing, or I have not yet felt it in any capacity. Using primarily shotgun, I'm still yet to dip below 50% ammo for it.
>>
It's fun, but no way does it come close to blood. I've just finished death wish and much prefer it.

On 'well done' it's far easier than blood. As long as you have armour you can tank a lot of damage. The AI is pretty poor, although they have moderately good path finding. So far I found its reminded me of Malice, the quake TC. But the kind of game I wished Malice was. It's okay, the levels are quite visually complex so secrets are inevitably harder to find.

>>5812113
>>5812095
>>5812003
Few of my gripes so far:
Shotgun altfire looks like it RELOADS shotgun with different ammo. But it's not actually reloading - it's special switch weapon animation between 3 and 7. you still have to reload if you didnt last time you used that weapon.

Radar is bloody useless since its range is very short and it lasts whole lot of 5 seconds.

Your aiming up/down range is very limited even in true-3D mode, so there are quite a few situations where enemies can shoot you, while you can't shoot back just because you cant aim that far up/down. Autoaim does not help, I tried - it won't shoot at angles below/above your view angle range.

Also, kys if you have to use auto aim. Ammo is abundant, gman is a shit boring twat
