How did it feel like? What were your expectations? Were people back then really that braindead that they would enjoy such simplistic "games"?
>>
>>5804080
when atari 2600 came out arcade games were already featuring NES-tier and above graphics and sounds

people jumped shit after "crash" and after japanese started offering affordable consoles with arcade quality games
>>
>>5804080
It's the opposite zoomer, people could imagine things with their brains. Also video games were a simple diversion like connect 4 or battleship, they weren't the multi-hour epics that would come years later.
>>
>>5804038

There's that thing called state-of-the-art. It's not like you didn't know what graphics you were gonna get and it was AWESOME! I can CONTROL what is happening on the screen, HOLY SHIT!!
Also there's the thing called imagination, sure it's just a block on screen but it is MY block on screen and it is just a representation, it's really an awesome sports car with big guns and a flamethrower!!1
>>
>>>/v/
>>
>>5804038
It's funny how zoomers think previous generations were as stupid and gullible as they are. Especially considering how much love accusing everyone of projecting.
>>
>>5804038
This is why I refuse to play anything before the 16 bit era. Even as a kid when the SNES was new, I could tell the NES was barely tolerable while Atari graphics were utter shit.
>>
>>5804068
Based and 2600pilled post.
>>
>>5804038
>dinosaurs, ninjas, and sports cars
>2600
That cover would be more appropriate for an NES game. 2600 titles had more elaborate paintings of space shit that gave you the imagination of what the game *should* depict.
>>5804068
Pretty much this. The only thing worse than constant, circle jerking nostalgia is constant, circle jerking, and usually anachronistic, nostalgia from millennials/zoomers over shit they didn't even experience second hand. Even this shithole succumbs to it.
>>

in 10 years GTAV will be considered a simplistic shitty dated game, you're already seeing it with the original GTAs even though they were leaps and bounds ahead of oldschool Atari/arcade games.
Or even better, compared to textbased DOS games.

I was born in 87 so I missed the actual Atari era, but all I had until I was 7 or so was a hand-me-down 2600 I got from my dad. I still remember sitting and playing River Raid and Mario Bros from hours on end.

Fun fact, Jill Of The Jungle was made by Epic and Tim Sweeney worked on it, those were the days when they could do more than just Unreal, Gears Of War and Fortnite.

Oh, and Tim Sweeney actually worked on games, rather than maybe an engine or going online to defend his digital store.
>>
>>5804529
If Sweeney is so successful ,why doesn't Jill get a modern platform game? With the right set of muscular thighs, she could be bigger than Tomb Raider.
>>
>>5804440
It's true. And the worst of all is that dated non-retro games are all soulless, on top of that.
Going for "realistic" graphics was surely a mistake. Not to mentiong homogenizing gameplay with "open world" shenanigans. People only played GTA because "you can go and do anywhere", and because it looked modern at the time.

>>
>>5804929
I don't know why, but a lot of people are like that with games. They are quick to drop and disown a game if the next hot shit comes out. I remember a group of friends I used to hang out with did that. It usually went like this:
>Halo 1 is out
>DUDE THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER! I'M FORMING THE HALO POLICE!
>Halo 2 comes out
>DUDE THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER! I'M CREATED THE HALO CODE FOR US TO ABIDE BY IN MULTIPLAYER. WE DON'T HAVE TO EVER PLAY ANOTHER GAME AGAIN. THIS IS PERFECT AND HAS NO GLITCHES!
>I kinda liked Halo 1 better
>Dude, Halo 1 is so gay

As soon as COD4 came out, that series went from the most popular at the time to dead in the water in mere seconds.
>>
>>5804038
Even worse now, at least back then it was just the dramatic painting on the cover. Now its cut pre-release content, pre-rendered "gameplay footage", downgraded graphics, etc, feeding a far mightier hype machine than in the 80s/90s.

Halo 2 DID have largely expanded multiplayer options at the cost of much shorter single player campaign, which some people preferred.

Halo 3 on the other hand was purely marketing, they even removed features like 3 and 4 player split screen.

Halo has never been dead in the water. It's floundered with the changing hands bungie to 343 and the release of Halo 4 and 5 even had some backlash. However the master chief collection coming to pc is huge.

There was an image made a few years back that kinda sums it up well. Games back then were incredibly simplistic, but our childish imaginations filled in the blanks and made it magical. Nowadays games are trying to be as realistic as possible, but as adult we only see objectives and mechanics. Mind you, also doesn't help how little "game" is in a lost of western AAA stuff either!

People don't get that cover art in vidya was meant to preload awesome graphics into something called IMAGINATION to compensate for abstract graphics, especially in the 2600 era.

even though I know the 64 byte restriction on code is a direct consequence of the 2600's massive lack of RAM, it's still just a bit rough trying to consider getting anything done in less than nine lines of BASIC code

That's a tired meme.

It's so tired that Activision capitalized on it and made the covers for all their 2600 games look like the actual game, but in a really cool way. Activision 2600 cover art is the apogee of video game art. I love it.
>>
>>5809628
the thing is most commercial games on the atari were not much more sophisticated than wha you could do with this.
Even though all you could do is a half-working pong clone.
If they'd found a way to cram some additional RAM on the cartridge, it coud have been great.

My favorite 2600 art is this alternative cover for Cosmic Ark.

Because this is exactly what you do in the game. Exactly. You control a little flying saucer thing and you rescue alien dinosaurs from planets and dodge meteors. You do every single thing you see on the cover here.

Cosmic Ark needs to be remade. The issue is that the laser barriers start flashing too fast too soon. You only get 6 levels in or so before it gets bloody impossible. They needed some other kind of obstacle. The laser barrier should just be one of the barriers. Spinning laser barriers? Flame barriers? You could get creative and the path through the barriers could get more and more elaborate. The core gameplay is great, they just needed something other than the laser gates because the only difficulty curve is how fast the laser gates are flashing and eventually it's like 5 times a second and getting through is pure luck.

I mean, I'm a millennial and I got to experience this when I was like 5 in '95, and I sure as fuck didn't care about visuals, the interactivity was overwhelmingly satisfying.

oh shit, is that MR ROBOT IN THE *something something* FACTORY!??!?
>>
>>5804068
You are wrong. The games he's making fun of were so bad they literally crashed the industry. most of them--almost all of them--were irrecoverably bad, often made by a single person on a completely unrealistic deadline.

You are the ignorant one. The comic is not about Nintendo-era games.
>>
>>5804362
Games with good visual style never get outdated, Atari shit was often way too simplistic to have a style beyond "these squiggles represent a character".
Absolutely same goes for "realistic" games that have no style of their own beside "realism". They get outdated, as perception of "realistic graphics" evolves, and what was realistic back then stops being realistic in comparison to other games.

Games with stylised graphics do not suffer from that, as they are not tied to perception of realism. You compare realistic games to atual reality. But you don't compare something that does not try to be realistic to anything, and thus able to judge the style on its own merits, not bound to the time period.

That is unless you are neanderthal who only cares about technicalities.

the video game crash never happened but it should have (and it will)

Some people actually think like this. Their false attempts to hate everything to look superior gets old.
>>
That OPs comic is stupid because game boxes had screenshots of the games, so you knew what you got.
Also, I mean, if you had an Atari 2500, you knew even a a kid that you were not going to get Dragon's Lair arcade graphics just because of a cover, nobody was so stupid. You knew what your console / computer could do.

Game covers were just game covers, cool pictures to help sell the game and also help your imagination to complete tha gaps of those simple graphics.
>>
>>5821689
I deeply wish I could have been part of the 90's hentai scene. Best I got were those rips stored on SNES roms
>>
>>5822170
There's something to what you're saying, but it doesn't invalidate it completely. The kid won't go into it expecting photorealism. But he has some right to expect that a fearsome giant dragon depicted will consist of more than a few dots on the screen that could be anything.
>>
>>5824216
Tha'ts right. It coul be disappointings if the graphics are reallly too bad compared to the cover, or weird cases like Pyscho Pig Ubx for 8-bits computers, where the cover was absolutely nothing like the game. Nevertheless, you still got screenshots of the game in the boxes meanwhile, nowadays a lot of game boxes don't have any screenshots for some reason.
>>
>>5804038

What's the joke here? how would a kid in the early 80s know what kind of graphics to expect? is it his very first game and he's too much of a cunt to not even be excited about his FIRST console ever? and instead of being excited he's instantly angry that his console in 1980 does not produce Crysis like graphics? how would he even know what Crysis graphics are? ohhhhhhhhhh the comic author is a zoomer who doesn't understand that graphics weren't instantly amazing!
>>
>>5824834
OP image acts like games of that era kept it a huge secret what the graphics looked like too, like until you bought the game and plugged it in you didn't even know what that you were being BAMBOOZLED.

You know, even though commercials back then showed gameplay

Is he playing Missile Command with a joystick?
>>
>>5824871
It's on Atari, atari had joysticks. Stop looking for things to be upset.
>>
>>5824874
Should I make disturbing comments about the underage girl instead?
>>
>>5824834
It's not a joke. Zoomers are seriously buttblasted that SMB has scanlines when played on an old TV but doesn't have them in the box art.
>>
>>5824878
Why make disturbing comments at all? You wanna go "aah, these people doesn't know the thing they're selling, it was on trackbaaaalll", but you're too daft to see it's also not the arcade version of Missle Command but it's port for Atari 2600. If you weren't looking for things to be upset about, you'd see that this commercial is, in fact, correct.

>look it up
>it's another faux retro indie game

Well at least it's not yet another "retro fps".

>>
>>5824994
What racism?
>>
>>5825002

>>
>>5820596
Based.
Shitty games had these covers that had absolutely nothing to do with the actual game. Images like >>5804584 miss the point, as Grand Theft Auto V pretty much features everything you see on the cover (that blonde woman may not be in the game, but she is a representation of all the hotties found in-game). Same with >>5804639, the discussion isn't "cover graphics vs in-game graphics", it's about being sold something that has nothing to do with the actual product.

This is what crashed the videogame industry and the reason the NES had to be marketed as an "Entertainment System".
>>
>>5824948
Are you moving goalposts? I think this faux retro indie game released this year looks better than fictional game from the comic. Besides I'd love to play a good Contra clone or Turrican clone, and I think this one might finally be it I'll wait for sale though I also played Super Cyborg and it was ok, but a little too plain.
