Just wondering, how would you explain the niche/role of a rail gun and lighting gun/thunderbolt compared to a shotgun and a machine/chaingun?
Like, what's the differences and how they could work?
>>
>>5727335
rail gun should be stronger per shot and used as a replacement for any other weapon used for sniping, the lightning gun should be the worse of 2 superweapons, essentially it should be handled how quake 3 does it but buff the lightning a little bit more and make it eat ammo
>>
>>5727353
I always thought LG's were like a hybrid of chainguns and plasma guns in the sense they could be usefull at close and strong but worse at accuracy and ammo management.
I wonder if the Telsa Gun from RTCW is a good example and also how could flamethrowers compare.
>>
Someone please tell me that Cryptic Passage and the Plasma Pak are better than Blood's 3rd and 4th episodes.

Hideous bros, I got a question:
ZM66 or Liberator?
>>
>>5727414
Genuinely difficult question, the ZM is lighter and ammo is common, but the fucking thing will jam and overheat on you. Whereas the Lib is powerful and reliable, but it's heavy and ammo is more scarce so you'll find yourself collecting brass and converting 4.26 ammo frequently.

I just use the ZM, it's a space age piece of shit but god damn is it fun.

DosBox or WinRott(GL)
DosBox is probably a slightly less janky alternative.

There's been talk about ECWolf supporting ROTT for some time, but nothing has ever materialized on that.
It's a sadly neglected game.
>>
>>5726938
This happens in professionally made video games, movies, and music as well. Your average consumer doesn't stop to look at the details. Have you watched someone on twitch or a friend play through a video game? They most likely just run through the levels to the next objective without paying attention to the environment and art. People who make maps, or other art are more likely to pay attention to the details and appreciate the work you've done. Most importantly you should be doing this for yourself.

Seeing as /arena/ is extremely verily dead, I'll ask you guys -

Is it worth it for some boomer like me to get into Quake Champions, when I've never touched it? Does it actually have a chance of getting better/get some staying power like Quake 3/ CPMA / QuakeLive did in their time?
>>

will that make me a monster?

If you’re truly starved for AFPS of any sort, it’s unfortunately your best bet. I can’t really recommend it in its current state, but you can download it for free and play as Ranger only if you want to give it a spin.
The hope is that after Doom Eternal releases, QC will stop having a skeleton team and actually be developed, but that’s a pipe dream.
I don’t think it has any staying power, sadly. It tried chasing the hero shooter trend of Overwatch and its clones, but as far as I’m aware, those ended up dying anyway.
>>
>>5727885
I went into it predisposed to hate it after years worth of nothing but bad word of mouth from literally everyone.

actually ended up having fun, if only a bit of difficulty playing due to bad latency issues. 100+ ping at all times is just no good.

>>5727849
What exactly does infinite height mean in the context of Doom anyway?
>>
>>5727526
Those vertices are there to make slopes. They appear at the edges of every triangle shaped sectors.
You can move them up or down to deform the sector.
>>
Does /doom/ still hate brutal doom?
>>
>>5728152
monsters collision boxes are infinitely tall in vanilla, so no matter what height you're at you'll bump into them if they're in front of you
>>

Look at my map (technotomb, last thread), I have a winding staircase there. You basically just cut up a pillar in pie slices and then adjust height accordingly.
>>
>>5728357
You can also copy the pillar beforehand so that it has the same proportions, scale it down so it's slimmer, put it in the middle and use the subtract modifier on it so that it makes an empty space down the center of the stairwell

That it generally doesn't check for height when it comes to collision with other things.

Some people say this proves Doom isn't three-dimensional, but fact of the matter is that this was intentional to save on computing power, in Heretic you can traverse over or under monsters, and their hitboxes can be stood on.

Ye. Fat fingering the wrong number during a heated battle feels like shit.
>>
>>5728645
Because they hear that the level geometry isn't actually 3D but 2D planes assembled to make something that looks 3D.

What they ignore is that regardless of how the game renders, Doom's world and gameplay is still very much three dimensional, they either forget that height is still a thing even if it's ignored in a few instances for the sake of speed, or they downplay the shit out of that and then try to weasel out a way to make themselves sound like they were actually correct.

It's not earthshattering, but it's pretty good, and I enjoyed playing it.

Imagine if Romero applied what he had learned by Doom 2 and Quake and made his own Thy Flesh Consumed style episode, if TFC kept being balls hard throughout its entirety (it does not fuck around on UV), and with a decent hell aesthetic distinct from Inferno. Has some consistent themes too, like the Evil Eye decoration being used to denote shootable switches, and those glowing red cracks like you saw in E1M8B.
Some people were upset by how hard it was, and just wanted more Knee Deep In The Dead. I don't understand those people.

I kinda wanna say that buying the physical box wasn't really worth it (mine arrived three weeks after shipping began, and people had already spread it on here in like a day), but I think the levels themselves with the Buckethead soundtrack was worth it, it's like $7 or so on Romero's site. The levels with .midi stand-ins is free.

my ql binds are fun.

1 for guantlet
2 for railgun
3 for shotgun
4 for rocket launcher
E for lightning gun
X for grenade launcher
Z for hmg
F for mg
Ctrl for walk
Shift for crouch
Space for zoom
M2 for jump
B for BFG10K, but I rarely use that.

Once you find a good config for yourself, all the Quake games are much more fun.

This is the best review of Sigil I've ever seen, props to you anon.

Also, I bought the (smaller version) of the box because I had money to spare at the time, and everything you get is actually worth the price if you're into it all. The CD is all high quality songs, though none of the MIDIS which I was unhappy about, I wanted a CD packed full of Jimmy's songs. The stupid floppy disk USB drive is good quality plastic, and legitimately looks like a floppy. The box is also neat, I've been thinking of using it to keep shit in but I'm not really sure what.

Starting off with a lighter color probably would have been better from my understanding. Easier to get the midtones and shadows right that way. Darker stuff just eats up real estate like that.
Any way to start over? Not saying it can't be saved but you know, starting over could be easier in the long run.

But you're likely right, starting over would probably be easier. I like the bottom part of him though, so I could just suspend his upper body in acetone or simple green for a day or two and start over.

You'll 100% be better off eyeballing it. If you convert it directly using the most common conversion rate (1m=32qu), doorways will look like they're about eleven feet tall along with oversized geometry in general due to the player's low viewheight.

The best ways for discovering music is through rateyourmusic, /mu/ genre starter packs or a private tracker called Redacted. Go to rateyourmusic, pick a genre you are interested in, and listen to the top rated albums for that genre. Once you have done that you can look at the lists and forum on RYM to find similar music.

They were like, a really, really good band back in the day. Their aggressiveness and energy was sincere. After And Justice For All, fame got up their head, they started to sign with bigger labels that promised them bigger money in exchange of playing stuff that could pander to the general public, leaving hardcore fans behind. The band members started to become real unlikable assholes.

It makes sense.
Compare Wolfenstein 3D to Kill em All.
Compare Doom to Ride the Lightning
Compare Quake 1 to Master of Puppets
Compare Quake 2 to And Justice For All
Compare Quake 3 to Black Album.
Compare Doom 3 to Load
Compare Quake 4 to Reload
Compare Rage to Death Magnet

Carmack lost his taste of making stuff he enjoys and opted to make things that would make him rich. Just like Hetfield. They are famous and rich now, but they are hollow. They are just a mere shadow of what they used to be back in the day.

Oldschool FPS are fun, but you people really should stop worshiping them as untouchable masterpieces. Ironically, Heretic, the best of all, never gets talked about here.

>Doom
Ugly level design, ugly weapon designs, not every enemy has its own sounds, lots of unnecessary RNG damage, artistic inconsistency everywhere.

>Quake 1
Repetitive levels, bullet sponge enemies, shitty weapons, everything is monochromatic, complete lack of design direction.

>Quake 2
It's easier to make a list of good things about this game: There is a cool soundtrack and cool graphics for it`s time, and that's it.

>Duke
Hitscanners in open areas without windup time, half of the weapons are useless. Many confusing levels.

Duke 2: More stupid weapons, more hitscanners, and now the doors kills you.

I really hate the SSG zombie actually.
Maybe because my experience with them is mostly them being used as replacements in gameplay mods, where they'll throw the balance completely tits off because most levels ever are not made with them in mind.

They can easily sneak up on you because they sound like all the other zombies, and at 20 fucking pellets at once, RNG is just not likely to be kind to you.
Mind that normal shotgun baldies only hit you for 3 pellets, so that's like being hit by like 6 or 7 baldies simultaneously, which is something that'd only be likely to happen in some kind of crafted ambush or trap encounter.

I don't think anyone worships them that way. It's pretty obvious they have flaws, but just listing your complaints in a general way without describing what exactly is wrong with those things is just glorified shitposting.
I'd also argue that Blood's arsenal is much better than you think it is, and comparing it to Duke's does it a huge disservice. Apart from slightly redundant dynamite types, every weapon is unique; in addition to different damage types and effects, their mode of operation can be hitscan, thrown, missile, constant short-range stream, and whatever the voodoo doll does. Compare and contrast with Duke's 90's obligatory three hitscan weapons and however many slightly different missile shooters. I also like how they made the pistol slot not useless ten minutes into the game by making it an actually viable weapon with a mean secondary attack.

Gameplay doesn't look very good, uninspired arsenal, lackluster visual design between that horrible filter and how monsters share similar colors with the levels themselves. From what I've seen the game really doesn't have a personality of its own.

I've noticed that "Slaughterwad" is often used as a pejorative in the Doom community.

Isn't there merit to the concept of a "slaughter map"? It seems like the equivalent of boiling Doom down to its pure action basics - dodging projectiles, crowd control, pickup management, reflexes. It seems like a welcome change of pace from keyhunting, a nice crescendo if you will.

What differentiates a good slaughter map from a bad slaughter map? How do you get a feel for its flow? Are the derisive "muh slaughter" remarks coming from some place of legit criticism, or are they from people who can't git gud at them?

How do I enable the correct aspect ratio in DOOM 64 EX

>>
>>5731043
Thats a fucking retarded argument for multiple reasons. 6 shotguns blasts is not "nothing." It takes an annoying amount of time considering that usually there are more than 1 cacodmons at a time you are dealing with. hence why the SSG was introduced to make killing lesser enemies less of an annoyance. In Half Life the enemies that require the most shotgun blasts would be the bullsquids or the Alien Grunts which need 3 M2 blasts each on hard. Both of these enemies also rarely ever show up in more than groups of 2. Also in Half Life ammo is much less of a concern and you have a much larger variety of weapons. The reason you use the shotgun in Doom is because you don't want to waste precious rocket or lasergun ammo on lesser enemies like Cacodemons. In Half Life you have guns like the crossbow which can dispatch enemies very fast and the ammo is pretty plentiful.

you can have a useless shotgun and a handy pistol.

ie Doom 3.
>>
>>5731616
Doom's pistol is nothing but a stopgap, you basically never ever use it if you have anything better.
Whittling down a Revenant's health with the pistol is a chore. In fact, fighting ANYTHING with Doom's pistol isn't fun.

Quake's shotgun is kind of a stopgap too, but it has good range with common ammo, and it actually doesn't do terrible damage, just being weaker than everything else.
Fighting an Ogre with the shotgun on the contrary doesn't take long, and the shotgun is actually useful for taking out ogres and other longer ranged nuisances at a distance.
Hell, if you want to, you can even take out a Shambler with the base shotgun in a few situations, and this sounds tedious (it's certainly not an expedient method), but it doesn't actually take THAT long given the fairly fast rate of fire, and how you're likely to hit with most pellets even at distance.

I'd say the pistol's a good way to get the player into the "mooD" of Doom, but that only works if the very first level is somewhat built around it (at least the beginning of the level).

It does decent damage against the former humans in the armor room on E1M1 (depending if you play on certain difficulties of course), and it kills them fairly quickly before you get the shotgun. Same thing with MAP01, it gets the player engaged by having them think on their feet by starting with the weakest weapon against the weakest enemies, as long as said weapon is at least powerful enough to take them down.

But then again that's prolly the philosophy of most FPS games in general.

There is, but it's a flavor of Doom which just isn't appealing to most people, it's the licorice of Doom, you might not like it, I might not like it, but that guy over there, he fucking loves the stuff.

>run around while firing BFG
>wow such gameplay very slaughter
Slaughter isn't even always hard, many times the true difficulty is figuring out how to time your use of powerups and triggers. It's like meta gameplay, it's just weird and lame to me.
>>
>>5731804
Pistol is fun, that's why people do pistol starting. Surviving the first seconds of a new level with pistol only is very rewarding, after you pickup the good weapons things become easier and less intense.
>>
>>5731980
Depends on the level, E4M1 stays intense for the entire map, even when you have the rocket launcher and shotgun.
>>
>>5731980
The reason I personally like pistol starting is I think the most fun parts of FPS games is how you slowly "level up" your firepower throughout the game. Pistol starting maps is that on a small scale, so it's repeatedly rewarding to me.

/doom/ ruined me. I used to think pistol starting any map was a meme, but then I gave it an honest try and now - I can't imagine vanilla doom gameplay any other way. Not even carrying over weapons if the player doesn't die, just pistol starting regardless.

>everything is monochromatic
There's an entire episode of grey/blue metal, and multiple blue-themed levels.

>Duke
>Hitscanners in open areas without windup time
You can literally strafe dodge them.
>half of the weapons are useless
True, but it has significantly more weapons than say Doom, so there's plenty of useful weapons overall.

>Blood
>Duke 2: More stupid weapons, more hitscanners, and now the doors kills you.
Git gud.

>Hexen
>Heretic, but done wrong.
Hexen's combat is way better than Heretic's. You wanna talk about bullet sponges? The basic Imp equivalent in Heretic (Undead Warrior) takes 4-5 crossbow blasts to kill. In Hexen you can kill most enemies in 1 or 2 shots of your 3rd weapon.
>>
is it possible to make a recurring unique boss/enemy type in a doom mod?
like, any time he "dies" in certain encounters he just teleports out of the level
but in the actual last time you meet him, he dies for real
>>
>>5732092
Have two different variants of the monster. One teleports away for its death effect, and the other actually dies. Then you can give them different attacks.
>>
>>5732110
>Then you can give them different attacks.
would be ideal for when he's stronger and more agressive like in most video game boss fights
i was thinking about this when i imagined the marauder from the upcoming doom as a potential "vergil" to doomguy's "dante"
>>
>>5732179
I know nothing about modding Doom, but that seems like the most simple solution to your problem.
>>
>>5731657
Slaughterwads with ridiculous monster counts are for brainlets who want to feel hardcore or think Doom is some shitty JapShmup. Good mappers realize this and focus on small encounters if they want to make hard wads. Even Ribbiks, one of the defining "hard-mappers", got woke and largely avoids slaughter these days.

Beat both expansions to Shadow Warrior, Twin Dragon and Wanton Destruction. TD was definitely better. WD just didnt feel like Shadow Warrior - too many generic city levels and cramped, frustrating encounters. Plus some ugly enemy reskins and terrible voice clips. TD only has one new sprite, for the boss, and it actually aint bad. Also they really dropped the ball not calling it WONTON Destruction.
>>
Alien Bastards is fun and it's weird how there's three arachno/brain enemies.
Something that bugs me about mods like these is when enemies are changed visually to fit the theme but the likes of Mancubi, Revenants and HK's still look demonic/unchanged (Besides maybe color palette) so they stick out like a sore thumb.
Then again, enemy sprites are never easy.

You mean like with the HEV suit arms? You could if you use the ripped versions by youreviltwin, if you can still find it, otherwise I think the Generations installer just hard loads the versions for you (Barney's arms in Blue-Shift, Adrian's arms in Opposing Force), and they can't really be overriden, and the Steam version has them where you toggle them in the options, and they'll override whatever else is there, be it the stock models or whatever you've added manually.

This gives me the feeling you don't want a good faith argument here.
Anyway, what >>5731961 said already hits the mark. Slaughter is largely made by mappers who have played Doom ad nauseam, to the point where the traditional mechanics bore them and the only entertainment value they can get out of the game is by exploiting the system in an extreme manner. At that point what you're playing becomes a separate "meta" game (could almost be considered bullet hell), and that's not the genre most people came for.
I think that's why so many folks chafe at Hideous Destructor--aside from the steep (and arguably unintuitive) learning curve, the mod is a super sharp departure from Doom's simple-to-control high-speed power-fantasy thrill ride.
