Which cover art are you fond of?
>>5707784The unused cover art for the US release of Gunstar Heroes
>>5707784Man Japanese MegaDrive covers are always so good, the box covers mixed with the tough plastic boxes for the carts always made MegaDrive games feel like you getting something really high quality.
I might scan a Hitoshi Yoneda artbook or two.
Always liked the pseudo futuristic aesthetic this one conveys where biker gangs rule the streets.
This is probably my favorite cover.
>>5710450Followed by this.
>>5710513This one is a few nipples away from looking like a splash page of a story in Heavy Metal magazine
>>5707784Old school Tekken was enjoyable for its time
Dumping some cool ones.
You really can't beat this.
>>5710827I'm not a fan of Dracula XX but goddamn does it have a good cover.
>>5711223Forgot my image.
>>5709196>dat slav squat
>>5711279it's really an asian or mongoloid squat more than a slav squat. you'll find it all over central, south, east and southeast asia. russians do it because they're asians with mongoloid influence.
>>5711291The Japanese one is called yankiizuwari and basically implies a bad boy or membership in a motorcycle gang.
>>5709196You might like this one, too.
Are there any other good sources besides Cover Project, SEGARetro, Launchbox, and VGPC (VGSC on Internet Archive) for cover scans? On a similar note, vgboxart and cover project are good sources for custom box art if you want to make or replace a box. Lots of garbage to wade through since it's user-created but still.
>>5711420It's also called うんこ座り, or poop squat
Maybe one of the greatest.
>>5710450I've been considering buying the JP edition to rescan just so I can get a better pic of this cover. I think my best bet is to buy the JP strategy guide since the cover probably holds up. However if I buy a boxed set of the game, I could also scan the manual. Decisions. If I knew someone in Japan I could just ask them to find a copy of the guide in good condition for me to scan and clean.
>>5711534Ah, wait, the guide has text stamped all over it. I wonder if I can find the manual by itself somewhere.
>>5711538>>5711534Then again, running it through Waifu looks good enough to me since there are hardly any details in the image anyway.
>>5710798>Giant robot demon terrorising a cyberpunk city>The main character could not possibly give any less of a shit
>>5711532but not in spanish
>>5709196Huh, this beat'em-up actually has a plot.Too bad I'm terrible at beat'em-ups.
>>5711430(Just to go back and add a comment on this game)>give boxart and intro a badass cyberpunk look>beginning parts of the game are driving through sun drenched, generic as fuck areas like a beach and desertWhat were they thinking?
>>5711534Here it is in wallapaper format.
>>5712287>>5712290>>5711534And here's the wallpaper version blown up and filtered as fuck.
>>5712292>>5712290>>5712287Thanks. I was gonna work on it after I finish cleaning up this Mischief Makers cover scan (only a 300dpi JPG unfortunately, found it on Nintandbox). Did you blast that last one with Topaz or something?
>>5712283how isn't cyberpunk generic lmao
>>5707784This one is pretty cool
The original scan was of a beat up copy that was uploaded as a JPG, but here's Mischief Makers. I'm tired so it might look shitty somewhere. I'll fix it later if so.
>>5712709Well, it just seems an odd choice to give a game a clearly dismal, cyberpunk-ish theme in the intro and box art, but then immediately drop you on a beach followed by a desert, both set in the bright of day.
Secrets of mana
Here's a first draft at a vertical universal case cover. I leveled the black and simply filled in the background curtain or whatever it was since it didn't look too good anyway. The tagline on the back is from the old JP Perfect Dark site. The logo is too, but it's low-quality so I had to upscale and filter it a bit. Source image is still crummy under scrutiny but it might look decent if you print it out on glossy paper and put it in a box.
>>5707784>>5708879>>5709661>>5710789>>5710792>>5710798>>5711346Absolutely gorgeous. Particularly the koei one.
US cover is nice, but jap is nicer
>>5707801Why do seppos do this?
>>5707927They had the price to go with it. Some retail prices were half the cost of the system itself.
>>5710728I love this game so much. I play It every night before sleep
I just scraped the JP scans from SegaRetro and everything from GamingAlexandria, might make a torrent for them later or something.. GA has more stuff in the Internet Archive under subject:"VGPC".
>>5709661This cover is amazing. It's really sad that no modern game reflects retro cover aesthetics, now that the hardware to do so is there.
I'd like to buy a copy of this to scan.
>>5716759>>5716715The best we have but I need muh 1200dpi scan to make a poster of.
>>5715424That illustration has more soul than the original weebshit, bogan.
There's been one I've been trying to find for ages, it's a drawing of a pilot in a spacecraft and you can just see one of his eyes, the rest is all suit and machineryIt's been killing me
The original Japanese Arc Hound/Contra Force art was going to have a badass, but tastefully reserved, action movie poster look (bottom right), but the American one looks like art for a line of edgy action figures marketed to tweens whose parents just don't understand. Don't get me wrong, they both look good, but it is amusing to see marketing's perception of the US vs the JP market.
>>5717998My all time fav game AND boxart
>>5718017It's a shame that never came out in Japan. Maybe the Japanese release would have lacked slowdown, which could have saved the game.
One of the most striking, distinctive covers of all time, definitely among the best IMO. I wonder if someone really got an increased chance of developing cancer just so the art could be made, that's dedication lolUnrelated, but does anyone else get bummed out that we don't really have game worlds like the ones depicted in many of these covers, even now? Especially today, that they could be more or less replicated, but smaller titles don't have the resources and more expensive ones can't take the risk of having a style too, well, stylized...
>>5717336Yuuyamidoori tankentai.It's a horror visual novel.
>my feet hurt>I want to go home>Can't he just die?>I wonder what Nei is making for dinner tonight
>>5717998>>5710450Both covers have something in common: they both tell a story without expressing any movement. The usual covers that tell a story have the protagonists surrounded by enemies or walking through a dungeon. Maybe a spaceship flying through the space. In this two covers you wonder what happened before and what is going to happen next. Are there more covers like these?
>>5711740It's not a particularly hard belt-scroller either. Continues are infinite and the password system is pretty easy to crack.
>>5718719I always wondered how Arc Hound would have worked on the Famicom, seeing how the NES version uses the Select button to change weapons, but the Famicom's 2nd controller doesn't have one.
>>5709196I was always kinda meh about this boxart, but I kinda appreciate how the highway where Riki and Kyoko are posing blends-in with the harbor sunset where Kunio and Misako are standing on. Kunio and Misako still look kinda weird next to each other though (like they just took clip arts of the characters pasted them next to each other).
The Double Dragon II flyer/boxart will always be the most iconic representation of the series for me. The Japanese version of Double Dragon 3 for the arcades and 1 on the Game Boy used the same artist, but for some reason they went for lame westernized covers for the US versions.
>>5722774>The Double Dragon II flyer/boxart will always be the most iconic representation of the seriesThis is absolute irrefutable truth. The summed up the whole series with that 1 image. One of the most instantly recognizable images for any game from that era.
>>5723484I like how the artist even kept Billy and Jimmy Lee's original arcade colors instead of the switched style they went with the console games. Most of the promotional art for the series in Japan made Billy Lee look like a poor man's Kenshiro and I never cared much for the Karate Kid headbands they wore for most of the western art.The Game Boy version of Double Dragon in Japan used the same artist and this is the artwork she came up with.
>>5723838Nice. Do you know the name of that artist?
>>5717998This is some End of Evangelion tier shit. For some reason it reminds me of the mass production Evas. I'm honestly amazed that a shmup would have such a great cover.
>>5725007Junya Inoue work used to be godlikeHis work for Esprade and Progear is great too
I think I'm the only one that liked the SNES version.
>>5714672Is this Brom? And how I fucking hate the marketing decisions to slap their fat fucking swine shit on covers."From the Publishers of Doom" "Published by" ShaREwArE "Advisory"Nice job on ruining art you dumb fucking commercial sector retards.
We need to make an essential covers chart.
>>5710451Does the landscape match the in game map?
Snatcher by Yuji Kaida. Technically this is a print ad, but they used the same art for the Sega CD cover.
Ihatovo Monogatari has a beautiful box art - and a recent english translation!https://www.romhacking.net/translations/4116/
I miss the booklets.
>>5726647>>5726658this looks comfy as fuck how have I never seen this before
>>5726678it's a surreal, linear adventure game based on the works of a japanese poet. it IS comfy as fuck, and I was surprised as hell to see a fan translation.HG101 of all god damn places has a really good write-up on the uniqueness of the game. I highly encourage you to play it.
>>5726759The soundtrack is also wonderful.
>>5725897Indeed it is. Here's another he did for Raven.
>>5714672how the shit was this game a 3 out of 4 for violence? Given the time, it's awfully close to a 4 out of 4
>>5707801This is both terrible and awesome.
>>5727042I like how shiny and reflective everything in 80s anime was.
>>5725937always liked this one
Here's an underrated one for a shitty game.
>>5728232dude that's some ugly CG and designs compared to most suff posted here
>>5726771>>5726759>>5726678Its not, half the segments barely work half the time, the music besides one track is good and the faggots who translated it completely fucked up half the text. NEXT>HG101FAGGOT101
>>5726759>>5726771I don't know if I would even know about any of this due to this thread, so thanks. I'm at the part I have to find mushroom for the frog captain in the bar.And this image for the thread.
>>5721879What's fucking wrong with this fat dynamite guy's head?
just dumping a few
That Hitler looming over the scenery never gets old.
I love this one so much. I wish I could have a poster of it. There's one on eBay from Japan, but the guy wants like $50 for it.
>>5729258I'll tell you what. I have a scanner, and I also like that image. If you're willing to pay $16~$25 for the soundtrack + international shipping to the US, which has this image on the cover (clean I might add), I will scan it in a very high resolution and clean it, and you can print off your own poster. It'll probably be cheaper than $50 anyway. Some of the risk comes from the fact that I have no way of knowing what condition the OST cover is in, but it looks to be in a jewel case so it can't be that bad. Drop an email if you're interested in putting your faith in a random person. It's a bit cheaper on Yahoo Auctions, however that ends in a day and it might turn into a gay bidding war or something. Plus I can rip the OST if it hasn't already been ripped.https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B000064MAM/https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/c740463946HabaneroScans@gmail.com
>>5710728>>5715974I always thought that one was Obelisk the Tormentor until I cleared the game.Too bad you couldn't get all cards legitimately tho
Great cover for a great game
>>5729041>Son, I am disappoint
>>5730907Oh nice, no need to scan it then. That looks like it's from an artbook?
>>5730059just as silly as the game itself
>>5730907Make South Town Great Again
>>5710506I love Rodney Matthew's art
>>5711740Shouldn't have been a storyfag
>>5717998It looks like the loli is leaning against a giant dick
The physical box for the text adventure ‘Suspended - A Cryogenic Nightmare’ is a PLASTIC 3D FACE WITH INSET GREEN EYES.
>>5740693Here's another, better lit, photo.
>>5740696And here's some hilarity that I found.
The Brandish games have always had some good covers. Here's Brandish Renewal.
Brandish 2 Renewal.
Brandish 3 Renewal.
Brandish 4.And Brandish VT kinda sucks, so I'm not gonna post it, but I did find a bunch of high res scans of all the covers that are way above file size limit, so I'll link that shit.http://retro-type.com/scans/falcom/
>>57406989001 hours in Paint
>>5741039This looks too good for 9000 hours in paint.
>all these great illustrators are at minimum 60 years oldGonna suck when they start dropping.
>>5725937I like this one because it seems like the cover for a graphic novel.
>>5728338Not him/her, but it has a lot of charm.
>>5741805Yeah, look at Toriyama
>>5741805The only good illustrators currently in activity I can think of are Soejima and Yoshida. Evrything else is bland as hell. Character design in dead in Japan.
>>5741823And how is that a good thing?
>>5740767Thanks, I didn't know that this existed. How'd you find this site though? Google image search brought me to it. I wonder what other tiny little sites are out there with good scans.
