Bullet sponge enemies with lack of flinch. Not only does this make the guns feel unsatisfying, it also means that you're inevitably going to tank damage when exchanging with the sponges which is shit. Their AI is also retarded, they'll run in random directions for no reason, doesn't even matter if you're shooting them in the face, they might just stop and stand there in front of you just 'cause.

Holy hell you all are bad at FPS games. It sounds like you all just stand in place and unload the SMG on enemies and bitch about how they're "OMG BULLET SPONGES" later on because you took the most barebones and slow approach to killing enemies, not bother to use any other tools the game gives you.

The game's enemies are weak as fuck. A good 1/3rd of the game's arsenal can kill most enemies in one shot if you think and bother to use them instead of trying to waste everything with the SMG at range. You can even beat most of the game with just the fucking pistol with ease as long as you keep your distance to tank HGrunt accuracy.

Yeah you can "reactively" throw grenades (which he's mostly not doing in that vid, he's throwing them in advance, and most of his actions are performed using advanced prior knowledge), and then have the scripted enemy randomly run away from them as you wait for them to explode. You can reactively use alt-machine gun explosives, but you're acting like you have unlimited supply of its explosives which you don't.

It is much better against grunts than either assault rifle or shotgun, and you litetally destroy them with headshots provided uou can put some distance between you.
The entirety of "We've Got Hostiles" is best (or at least safest) to be carried by pistol. From PowerUp onward it (as a dedicated anti-grunt tool) is supplanted by magnum and underbarrel grenades, but can still be used on distances to save up on good and rare ammo.

Quake 2's SMG is great if you learn how to control the recoil. If you just hold down the trigger and compensate for the muzzle climb by pulling down on the mouse, you can do a lot of damage fast with it. Unfortunately you don't have a lot of time to git gud with it before it gets outclassed by the minigun, and Q2's minigun is fucking amazing, so I think the SMG gets an unfair reputation for being hard to use just because players didn't spend much time with it. I played a lot of Counter-Strike before I played Q2 so the recoil control felt easy and satisfying to me.

Whenever I play that section or that game the enemies are always hyper aggressive and kill me just by being near them even on the easiest difficulty if I stand in one spot for a short period of time.

By being hyper aggressive yourself. As a child, I remember the marines being really hard because if you're trying to stick to cover and play carefully, they'll use grenades to flush you out and rush you. Basically, they keep the pressure on.

As an adult I find them surprisingly stupid (but in a fun, endearing way) because I'm experienced enough in FPS's to feel comfortable going after the marines like it's a deathmatch game. Because the shotgun and SMG are both close range weapons (I know SMG's are usually mid-range but not in this game, too inaccurate and burst fire doesn't change that) I found myself playing hyper aggressively just so that I could close the distance quickly enough to kill them fast. They end up trying to run away a lot of the time, just like in that webm.

Interestingly, the game manual discourages "playing aggressively like you would in any other FPS game, this is a tactical game" (paraphrasing) but upon reflection I suspect that's a deliberately misleading statement because they didn't want players doing that. If you play passively/defensively, the AI appears to be much smarter.

Fantastic combat bros, this is really great stuff, I love it.

Also note throughout exhibits A-D only weapons available to the player are pistol, shotgun and machine gun (no nades for the launcher yet).

The optimum strategy if you want to minimize damage, no matter how much you like to meme and tell me I'm bad and git gud etc, is to hang back and keep distance from the grunts to minimize their hitscan damage. The result is fucking awful gameplay like this.
