You can set the touchpad so that it requires physical depression. It is not just a touchpad, but is a set of analog buttons also.

If you use something like Retroarch the "home" button can be bound to call RA's menu overlay. Bet it could be used to call Steam's overlay if running in big picture mode with it too.
>>
>>5500386
Retro games are the only thing it excels at because you don't need to use the ridiculous pads. Though in the few games where a d-pad is truly necessary over a stick, then yeah.. it sucks.

It's pretty good but just know that on games designed for 4 face buttons the layout gets fucked so if the game doesn't support rebinding then it'll be weird. Such is the case for those Genesis re-releases on Switch.

Is this the "shill your favorite controller" thread? If so then I just wanna tell you guys that the PDP Faceoff Wired Pro Controller for the Switch also works really well for emulation. All the buttons are responsive so it's not bad if you can get it for 25 bucks or less. The D-Pad being not as clicky as on the Xbox One controller or the 3DS is kind of a downer and you need to connect it through a cable so wireless/bluetooth ain't possible either so if that triggers you then I guess it might not be your controller after all but personally I'm very happy I got one on sale.

I had one for a few weeks and I was let down big time. Getting games to cooperate in Windows was a hot fucking mess and the dpad pushes into the controller which is a big problem in anything that makes heavy use of diagonals. I'll sometimes come to a dead stop especially if it's a platformer that lets me walk while crouched. Other than that it felt great and would've been perfection had it not been for those problems. I'd like to hope I just got a bum unit and may have better luck with a different model next time. I'll probably just wait for the licensed Retro Bit pads.

I love the particular colors on the psone gamepads but I loathe the fucking d-pad. The sixaxis I have has a d-pad that allows me to do whatever the fuck I want with ease (granted it's a little bit mushier) but this one is fucking hard and it second guesses diagonals. Checked if the rubber pad broke, used an eraser on that thing, tried anything. No fucking dice.

>throttle on the left
Every time. Every fucking time. Almost all two-seater aircraft, including the big airliners, have the throttle in the center. That means 50% of the people sitting in those cockpits have the throttle to their right. And at least 75% of Gundams have slide throttles on both sides as the main controls. Seaplanes and some Gundams even have throttles overhead. Why can't I buy this shit in a store? I am THIS MAD.
>>
>>5505383
I think the thought is that if you're using the control stick with your right hand it's easier to put your left hand on the throttle.

He may be talking about the one made for the PS3 (which also works on PC), which did indeed have the microswitched joystick (pic related). You're probably thinking of the one made for the Neo Geo Mini or whatever they called it that came out within the last year or two.
>>
>>5505463
Then I might as well use my feet and pretend it's a flying car.
>>
>>5505383
Do you not like a standard HOTAS setup? You can get yokes and throttles, as separate units, and position them to your preference.
>>
>>5505383
>>5505504
Those sticks aren't modeled after commercial jets and two-seater planes, though. They're modeled after fighter jet cockpits such as pic related, which place the throttle on the left for exactly the reasons >>5505463 stated.

>>

It's weird seeing a stick in the center. Later fighters put it on the right.
>>
>>5505608
>>5505615
With older fighters you need the leverage the longer stick gives you since its actually connected either with cables or hydraulically to your control surfaces

If the plane is fly by wire, they usually put it on the right. I imagine it's easier to hold onto and manipulate in high g because you can lean your arm on the plane.

>>
>>5506030
I'm not seeing any of the handle models for sale. Why not a SixAxis/DualShock 3? Works well on Windows if you can figure out the drivers, and Ubuntu's kernel has them baked in if you're fortunate enough to have GPU drivers that can even do 2D without jarring artifacts. Doesn't work on Android unless rooted or plugged in with OTG and it never stops charging when wired to a phone.

There's also DualShock 4 but it has much shorter battery life.

Do you not like the Xbox/Nintendo layout?

Different anon here. The quality of a D-pad is less about the shape of the hat and more about the switch and swivel mechanisms. My experience with an SN30 Pro has been that the D-pad doesn't firmly stay on its swivel point and the design of the contacts makes it too easy to input diagonals when you're trying to input verticals or horizontals.

According to a teardown I found somewhere (pic related) the PCB contacts don't have the same design flaws as on the SN30 Pro, but it's possible to press all four directions by pushing down in the center of the pad. What I haven't seen confirmed is how much more pressure it takes to input a diagonal than a horizontal/vertical. If you actually own one of these, can you try this right now?

>>
>>5500274
6 face buttons on a controller is cancer. two sets of shoulder buttons and 4 face has proven superior. You can't claw grip and pretend it's an arcade stick.
>>
>>5506041
>Why not a SixAxis/DualShock 3?
Because I actually want a wireless PS1 controller, and the Ps2 ones work as well...sometimes. Some of the generic ones I have gotten have the shoulder buttons reversed...basically I have to take them apart and desolder the wires and flip them. R1 & R2 are switched, same as l1 & l2. I don't know why they do that.

I spent 2 hours repairing a unit last night that my 5 year old shit solder job failed on the right buttons. It was an easy fix, but in the process I broke their shitty solder joints. Thankfully I am much much better now then years ago, and it ends up it works better than I imagined. It is a good wireless controller, and was only $10 years ago. It has the proper shape of the Ps1/2 controller.
>>
>>5507671
From now on I want controllers with 8 or more face buttons because fuck you

>My experience with an SN30 Pro has been that the D-pad doesn't firmly stay on its swivel point and the design of the contacts makes it too easy to input diagonals when you're trying to input verticals or horizontals.
This is why I'll never be able to trust another 8bitdo controller ever. It's a total crapshoot whether or not you get one of the best controllers on the market or the worst.
