holy shit this fucking avgn episode made me mad.
Im from europe - from that part where we had shit ton of Famiclones and ALL kinds of NES cartriges.
And i had both Dizzy games and Robin Hood game on separated cartriges, and back then those 3 games were the TITS.
Especially Robin Hood.
It was a neat hardcore game where you explore the whole castle.
i know AVGN reviews shit for shits and giggles but him simply vomiting "durr hurr this game sucks" fucking made me upset.
Every kid from my circle back then would agree that at least DIZZY 2 is great because its simply an OPEN WORLD ADVENTURE game and robin hood is like dark souls 2D (yeah i know how memeing this sounds).
>>
>>5494481
Nice.

>>
it's basically satire dude, they just pick whatever hasn't had screen time yet
>>
>>5494497
it's a thin ice. You can be "ebin satirical troll dude" but its easty to start acting like a complete retard.
>>
>>5494503
His whole shlick is kind of slinging profanity at the smallest things, which isn't really an excuse but it's kind of an excuse rofl
>>
I think its safe to say that 90% of the people that watched that video wouldn't have played those games either way. Only maybe a handful of hardcore NES enthusiasts would go out of their way to emulate an unlicensed game whether its good or not... most unlicensed games are pretty low quality so no one is going to take the chance.
>>
>>5494467
AVGN started the "e-celeb cancer" meme. He's an unfunny, talentless faggot that shills his merchandise by screaming "humorously" and calls that "content".
>>
>>5494467
>Every kid from my circle back then would agree that at least DIZZY 2 is great
You play what you have, you learn to love what you play. That's why so many anons feel so uncommitted to /vr/ games these days, they have too many choices.

this is 2019
any person interested in retro gaming already emulated the shit out of everything many times.
And probably has an entire NES library on PSP or something like that.

you just told that being an AVGN follower = being a pleb
>>5494527
he was funny back then when he was a total dork and overanalyzed everything - ghostbusters series, random consoles series.
This video was just a quick meme similar to those "Hidden Block" autists like Caddicarus/SpaceHamster and etc.

>>5494531
you still a fat frogposter tho
>>5494529
>You play what you have, you learn to love what you play
im pretty sure we had shit ton of games and shitty games never had any popularity in any circle of kids
Dizzy 1 was simple but not shitty
Dizzy 2 was like one of those Adventure games from PC where you collect items and write down parts where they can be used
it also long as fuck and simply an OPEN WORLD with some additional gameplay like mine cartriding that leads to different places.
You can later go under sea and explore sunken FUCKING PIRATE SHIP when you find diver gear.

I had quadro adventure and 3/4 games on it sucks. You are also blatantly lying, super robin hood and treasure island dizzy were only released on quadro adventure, which was one cart, they never got separate release.

linus shithead is terrible platformer, its even worse than AVGN made it look like. Boomerang kid is kinda OK but repetitive and unforgiving/hard. Dizzy is pure trial&error, you die easily and you only get one life, so if you die you go all the way to the beginning, its just not fun at all. Super robin hood is the only decent one.

>>
>>5498113
You didn't have any demoscene, your games were mostly interactive storybooks or spreadsheets disguised as a game, and the other thing that strikes me when I read a US computer magazine from the 80s is the dry presentation and discussion of how your C64 can be used for business and education, whereas the British mags were very colourful, cartoony, and completely focused on games.
>>
I mean what the hell? Creatures and Jack The Nipper versus those astoundingly boring war sims and dungeon crawlers.
>>
>>5497606
Not really. Very few of those 80s computer game programmers remained relevant after the era of bedroom coders ended in the 90s. Most moved on to careers outside of gaming or else got swallowed up and became anonymous code monkeys at one of the big studios.

The Dizzy games were massive in the UK, if you had a home computer you almost certainly owned at least one due to a) them being cheap budget games b) being on the insanely popular Dizzy Collection compilation releases (yes games used to come in compilation albums). Unfortunately they were never really very good even then, but were massively popular with the kidz. This was probably because they were also made by literal children, complete with idiot children's mangled grammar in the in-game dialogues. They made the Darling brothers insanely rich but they're not interesting to play other than they're pretty much the epitome of the "arcade adventure" where you navigate simplistic platform challenges on split screens solving obtuse puzzles, and the game design decisions that informed Treasure Island Dizzy (you have one life because they realised their central gameplay mechanic was a dumb idea). The best of the early series is probably Magicland Dizzy if you must indulge.
The console versions are essentially odd "greatest hits" compilations of bits of the original 8-bit games glued together with better graphics.

>>

Because those games were made by professionals instead of teenagers as a summer job.
>>
The American PC gaming scene was largely born out of games that students played on university mainframes like Star Trek and Colossal Cave Adventure. These games were usually pretty dry and nerdy.

When the early microcomputers appeared in the 70s, the first thing people did was adapt those mainframe/mini games for them. From there, the PC gaming industry was born. Thus that's why American PC games have historically had lots of dungeon crawlers and war sims. It came out of that 70s mainframe culture.

The Euro gaming scene was completely different and more like a bunch of bedroom coders trying to adapt popular arcade games. As compared to the dry American aesthetic, the Euro stuff was really bright, loud, spastic, and inspired by punk rock aesthetics. Game publishers weren't really developers the way Sierra or Origin were with in-house facilities where a group of regular paid programmers and artists designed games, it was more like "We'll take whatever some kid wrote in his bedroom and publish it." They wanted games released at a high rate and there was no way anyone spent up to a year working on something.

Europeans were poorer than Americans, that's what led to weird shit like ZX Spectrum games still coming out in the early 90s when the thing was like 10 years old. By the end of the 80s American devs were starting to pack it in with 8-bit computers. Microprose and LucasArts were some of the first to quit, their last 8-bit computer games were released in 88.

With consoles it was a little different. The NES was a limited machine and also early 80s tech, but Nintendo invested tons of money into it including new advanced mapper chips to extend the system's capabilities. Without shit like MMC3 it probably would have been over by the time the Mega Drive appeared.

Commodore and Atari never provided the level of tech or software support that Apple did.

The Sega CD wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't amazing. Sega decided to promote it as an FMV game machine (because that was the hot new fad at the time), which I think it's actually pretty bad at, they should just have focused on marketing that discs could hold much more content and that it could play recorded audio.

There's good games on it, but there's way too many FMV games on it, and there's actually very few FMV games (on any system) which are actually at all good.
To call it complete shit I don't think is fair, but in his defense, he did show a few of the good games, amongst a lot of the crappy ones.

The same reason people are fond of shit like the 90s Midway arcade games. Cruis'n USA was not a good racing game by any stretch of the imagination, but people played it as a kid and ended up attached to it.

Probably because they haven't played the game in decades and don't remember how shitty it was.

I don't think he'll do that because he has as official policy that he only uses real hardware, not emulators, and since he's American, where the fuck would he find a ZX Spectrum?

That game broke emulators for the longest time because of an undocumented PPU quirk it uses on the title screen.

Reads from the sprite position registers which are officially write-only. Earlier PPU revisions (up to Rev E) do not allow you to do this so Micro Machines won't work on early production Famicoms and also the first US model NESes.

Well, my first game was Batman the movie, which was an affront to the senses compared to Sunsoft’s game on the NES. We used to play Barbarian II and International Karate a lot, but they felt like they had very deliberate movement and not as snappy as anything in the arcade. Xenon 2 Megablast had cool music, but the gameplay did not hold a candle to Japanese shmups.

Like, there’s nothing on the Commodore platforms that I feel like I’m missing or wanna go back to, but I have a massive appreciation for Japanese and American consoles now and find a lot of joy in playing the games on them, completely separated from nostalgia..
>>
The best C64 and Amiga games were the more computer-focused ones like Seven Cities of Gold and Ultima. Console games on a computer tend to not work very well.

Psycho-Nics Oscar. It's Gradius but it's a platformer. It's alright.

The aesthetic and even some of the music are very Turrican.

Either I remember wrong, but I liked the older videos where he was getting increasingly annoyed by the games, and usually one last bullshit moment blew his lid off. There were some videos where he looked like he was genuinely angry at the games and not just acting.

>Well, my first game was Batman the movie, which was an affront to the senses compared to Sunsoft’s game on the NES
It's not terrible for what it is, but it's also not trying to accomplish the same things as NES Batman.

Ocean Batman is a mix of different minigames. NES Batman is a straight platformer/beat-em-up.

>>
>>5503667
I get the feeling that Sunsoft were very ambitious, because the graphics and sound on their NES games were some of the best of the system.
I mean, if you're willing to spend the extra money on extra chips for your cartridges, and thus raise the cost on your end and the consumer, just to have more sound channels and better presentation for your game, you're probably doing that because you have some kind of idea or vision you want to show and sell to people.

I can't think of a lot of low budget games which were actually really good.
I'm sure there were a bunch of ripoffs of stuff like Tetris, and popular arcade games like Pac-Man, some which must have been decent clones, but I wonder about more original approaches.

Why was 'microcomputers' a big thing in the UK anyway, I thought they were supposed to be a wealthy country?

1980s UK? I think not.

Not in the US anyway. The Famicom Batman used the Sunsoft 5A mapper, but this was just changed to the MMC3 for the US release. Return of the Joker did use a Sunsoft FME-7, it's the only licensed US NES game to use a third party mapper.
>>
>>5504830
Not just the UK but all of Europe.
>>
Europeans in general had a higher tolerance of ultra-cheap computers with rubber keys and cassette storage. The US has always been a premium computer market and it was expected to have disk storage, a real keyboard, 80 column text, that sort of thing.

The arcade N.A.R.C. used some pretty advanced hardware so it wasn't going to translate to home systems that well.
>>
>>5505193
It was pretty faithful to its arcade counterpart aside from obvious graphical downgrade and so on. I’ve played and beaten it, it’s fun
>>
>>5505185
N.A.R.C is pretty much all style and schlock.

If you look at this frame here, you have two cops (Max Force, and Hit Man) decked out in armor, brandishing big guns, standing next to a sports car fitted with machineguns, and a vanity license plate reading "SAY NO OR DIE" (this is their patrol vehicle).
The game is all kinds of violent, weird, obscene, and sleazy, I don't even care that the game is just kind of middling in gameplay, it's such an insane and unapologetic cavalcade of exploitation that it's just absolutely lovely. Parent-Teacher groups hated N.A.R.C so much.
When you consider that this came is in the same setting as Mortal Kombat and Smash TV/Total Carnage, a lot of the crazy nonsense makes a lot more sense.

tl;dr, He's dressed like that because at no point did anyone think "Would this be more practical or make more sense?", it was all just "What would be the coolest thing visually?"

>>5505193
Compared to the original, it's surprisingly intact, at least in the gameplay department.
Also, in spite of censorship, a lot of the juicy sleaze is actually still there.

>>5505213
That too.

>Compared to the original, it's surprisingly intact, at least in the gameplay department.

The graphics are ugly, that's what I don't care for and as usual, Rare were cheap SOBs and wouldn't pay for cartridge ROMs >128k while many Japanese NES arcade ports like Double Dragon and Bad Dudes used 256k ROMs.
>>
>>5505320
I mean, yeah, it's ugly as fuck, but it still plays.
>>
>>5505320
Rare didn't have the budget for big ROMs, that's why their NES games were always in the 64k-128k range other than Battletoads because it was intended as their magnum opus.

Double Dragon and Bad Dudes were made by Japanese arcade devs with big bucks, so they were willing to invest in larger ROMs.
