Was it really THAT bad?
>>
>>5435435
Never heard of this but from that fucking pictures on the cover, I'm gonna say yes. Jesus christ.
>>
>>5435476
holy zoomer, why are you on this board?
>>
It's a middle of the road ARPG.
>>
>>5435435
it's decently fun but there's not much to it
>>
>>5435435
yes
>>
>>5435435
Probably wouldn’t have been judged as harshly if it had come out earlier than 1998.
>>
>>5435435
No, it was fucking amazing, my brother and I still replay it. I love the music so much. Also, honey bread.
>>
>>5435435
It's not that bad, it'does have some issues though.

I actually really like the presentation, it's a very good looking game considering the hardware. If they had done what they wanted, that is adding the princess and a knight as playable characters then the game would've been much better. It would address the biggest issue, those being the tedious battles.

Of course if they had added some variation to the spells and had the magic scale better then I'd say that it would've been a 7.5/10 game.
>>
>>5435435
It's not that bad, but there's nothing to it. In a world with dozens of rpgs to choose from this one lacks a lot of features. The story is fine, but simple and uninteresting. The graphics are colorful and pleasing to look at, but the overall design is pretty boring outside of a few monsters. The music is good, there's no bad tracks. The progression (a mix of exploring and xp) is fine. There's nothing to do outside of following the main story and combing the maps for secrets. No mini-games or side quests, which is a glaring flaw when compared to what other jrpgs of the time had to offer. In the end it's best selling points were the combat system, which had a decently surprising amount of depth. With moving to dodge attacks, and positioning to cast spells most effectively.

A mile wide and an inch deep, the game is fine if you want a time waster. But if you want a game that tells you a good story, or has good game play to let you have fun with, there's many others out there. People really wanted a good rpg for the 64 at the time, and this wasn't it. So all they had left to do was sit and get angry at it.

That bad compared to what? What shitposters on this board say or what "the community" in general thinks about it?
Not that it really matters because at the end of the day it shouldn't be an issue as long as you're having fun yourself. I know saying that has become sort of a cliche but still, what's the problem if you're just having fun with Quest 64? There's no reason to assume it's a game without flaws or that you can't debate its flaws of course but that's not related to your question OP.

INB4 some shitposter replies and says "yes that's a huge problem because *insert random nonsense*"
>>
>>5435830
exactly, thank you.
>>
>>5435830
>awful camera
>combat early on is horrendous, later stages the spells in each category are the same and the supposed "best" ones get beaten out by lower tier spells
>have to run around to line up spells since there's no way to know if it'll connect or not. (some may enjoy this but for me it's just stupid)
>forced to pick two elements able to max while the others get left behind, but that's okay because there's only two really important elements anyways
>can't level up all stats at the same time like every other fucking RPG - can only do one at a time which makes leveling up extremely tedious
>story pretty much nonexistent until last hour (may not be subjective)
those are my major gripes with the game - I hate it and it fucking sucks, but I'm sure there's people out there who enjoy it.
>>

are you defending that art on the cover?
>>
The apologists for anything N64 related on this board, holy hell. The game is an absolutely abysmal shitshow, and somehow one of if not the closes thing the N64 had to an actual RPG. It was a slap in the face for pretty much any SNES RPG fan that desperately bought it.

Some games have redeeming characteristics, but this game is a half-assed less-than-mediocre pile of absolute garbage. I am incapable of the gymnastics others are doing ITT to look upon it with anything but contempt.

Life is way too short to play shit like this imo, but do what you like lol.
>>
>>5436173
you do realize this game came out like several months after the launch right. Like, wtf do you expect some epic ARPG thats going to blow your mind, when 3D was just starting.
>>
I've never played it but the aesthetics of it look super comfy to me. That alone makes it probably worth a try at least. I kind of like how generic it seems
>>

Some people have this thing called 'dedication', so they finish what they've started. I know for retarded-ass zoomers that's a strange thing since you twits don't even want to finish growing up, but it's something older gamers appreciate.
>i dont go on rampage on how bad it is.
Nor did you learn proper spelling or how to argue in school, evidently, but here we are.
Giving a full opinion to fellow anons is one of the things we do here. If you don't like it, leave.

Quest 64 came out in 1998. The N64 launched in fall of 1996.

Lol, zoomer detected. Most kids didn't give a shit about RPG's at the time, because all the good ones were on PC which no one really cared about and the only ones on console were those "gay japanese turn based games," all the kids were pretty fucking stoked just to have Banjo, Golden Eye, Super Mario, Starfox, and Pokemon Stadium.
>>
>>5437609
What the fuck? Can you /v/ retards leave and stop thinking saying "dumb zoomer" is an argument? I knew plenty of people growing up who wanted an RPG on the N64, and I'm sure plenty of others had the same experience.

>>
>>5435435
Paper Mario and Zelda taught us how a N64 RPG could be with a decent team behind of it, anon.
Quest 64 isn't as bad as let's say, Superman 64, but there are so little good things about it and so many frustrating things that I really wouldn't reccomend it to anyone expecting to see a game that made use of the N64's potential.

That's why people retcon the two zelda games as rpgs rather than action/adventure. There's also an Ogre Battle game for it if you count tactics rpgs. I think there's a few japanese only rpgs that never came out over here. I've never seen a single person talk about them, even among japanese retro gamers.

Yeah I guess. It's definitely got enough of the mechanics to seem like a rpg. I count it as an early example of an action game with rpg elements, like many other games in the post vr era. Even though that style/sub-category didn't really exist yet. I'm not going to die on this hill though.

Ironically, it's one of my favourite rpgs. I think it's charming in a very eerie way. >>5440916
It is decent. I get enjoyment out of it because it does stray from standard fill up an exp gauge and get predetermined stats and levels once you level up. You fill your element meter and when it ticks over you can assign a point in one of the four elements, and if you level up many elements at once you can navigate the spell menus in lets say wind elements and if you press up to go to the fire side you unlock a wind/fire combo spells that you only obtain through fire and wind investment. While the game isn't huge on exploration due to how the level design is, it is still worth going off the beaten path because you can find wisps to get an instant element level to assign. Mana regenerates on its own out of battles and it regenerates between turns when you don't use a spell so the game is more magic focused than other JRPGs since it allows you to use magic a bit more liberally while giving you a reason to just whack enemies with your staff.

There is an almost complete lack of items, no equipment at all, just some consumables in a limited inventory. Really no side quests, it is a straight arrow with the story which doesn't bother me personally but to others it does. Plenty of recolored enemies as well but they do get some new spells. You can move around in battle which can help you evade attacks, especially if you know the sorts of attacks those enemies do and I swear you could dodge an attack with a precise button press right before it connects but I am unsure about that. Walking around can get a bit slow as well.

While Quest 64 isn't worth playing, there are worse JRPGs and other ones that are more offensively boring than it.
>>
>>5440986
It is almost the same game with a few new bosses and of course in 2D. I think it is shorter as well.
>>
>>5441942
That is in no way "bad ass". It's not unpleasant, though.
>>
>>5440986
If you've played the first one all the way through it's neat to see how this one translate the game to the gbc. It's almost 1:1 with town/overworld maps being as identical as possible to the point where the secret wisps are even in the same places. and the battle system is also virtually identical. There's a little bit more going in with the other children characters, they show up in a cutscene near the end. There's no new mechanics, and none of the existing ones were improved. Whether keeping everything the same while translating a 3d game to 2d is impressive or not is up to you.

>people retcon the two zelda games as rpgs

They don't. People referred to Zelda style games as RPGs at the time because virtually everything else that had 'levels' instead of worlds with towns were not RPGs.
>>
Even as a kid I could figure out spamming earth was the best option. The combat was deeply broken and the rest of the game was completely remarkable in every other category. The N64 needed some good RPG entries and this wasn't it. I should probably give it another go, I feel strangely nostalgic about it despite it being my least favorite N64 game in my collection.
>>
This game is pure. All of the criticism levelled against it betrays the same Zoomer mindset. Fuck off and play fortnite and never ever post here again.
>>
>>5435435
There were only 3 RPG's on the N64, and only 1 was good, yes it was that bad.
>>
>>5444536
A literal non-argument, based.
>>
>>5444547
Sorry, I forgot you guys play Apex legends now. Leave Quest 64 to me.

>people retcon the two zelda games as rpgs rather than action/adventure
>retcon
It's cute when people born after 1995 pretend to be grown ups.
>>
>>5444536
No, people actually hated it back then too. Stop trying to retcon history.
>>
>>5443123
Rock Avalanche spell could randomly hit multiple times and was by far the strongest spell . And you can't progress at all without leveling up the water element Healing spell.
>>
>>5444653
>No, people actually hated it back then too
Not me. One of my all time favourites. I don't understand the hate. Yes, I concede that it was the Dark Souls of its time, but difficulty aside the game was solid with an outstanding soundtrack. Pro tip: You can beat the game if you put in the effort, I know you didn't get past the thief.
>>
I'm not sure if it was this or Aidyn Chronicles that were the precursors the modern day, empty world console RPGs. Compared to what was coming out on the PS1 and PC at the time, it pales in comparison. Maybe if they finished it then it wouldn't be such a pile of gabage.
>>
>>5446452
Fuck off, retard. You didn't play it. None of you tasteless little shit heads did. Go pick your fucking drop zone. Your online discord "buddies" are waiting to play another 12 hours of loot and shoot.
>>
>>5446553
Is a mediocre game like Quest 64 really going to be your hill to die on? Come on, buddy.
>>
>>5435435
Yes. This game was released ultimately unfinished and rushed.

I like what it tried to do, but playing through is a genuine slog. It's painful and quite uninteresting.

For what it's worth, I do enjoy the art-style and general audio direction. The combat system is unique and combined with my previous points makes for the very little that's enjoyable.

I can't even really remember the dialog, but I don't recall it as interesting.

My last gripe is actually the combat system. The level-up system is heavily flawed.
>>
>>5444851
Wow, can't argue with that logic. "I liked it therefore no one else hated it!"
>>
>>5446573
That and the inverse of this statement are the basis of every internet argument ever.
>>
>>5446553
who hurt you anon? did a zoomer knock up your girlfriend?
>>
>>5446568
Well, fuck me for enjoying the game I guess. It isn't perfect, I get that. It has its flaws, but I'm not prepared to shit on a game that gave me many hours of entertainment. There is room for a game like Quest 64.
>>
>>5435435
Yes. Honestly nostalgia is the only real thing the game has going for it. The graphics were mediocre, the combat had interesting ideas but was tedious overall, especially since the best build was the "hit enemies with your fucking stick" build, the dungeons were tedious and didn't have many obvious markers to let you know where you were, making it easy to get turned around and accidentally wander back the way you came. And the game itself was so bare bones that the fucking gameboy port had more story and general content.
>>
>>5446585
It's not that you enjoyed it as much as you can't handle the realty that a lot of people didn't enjoy it. And you're right there is room for Quest 64 in a landfill
>>
>>5446576
Did I strike a nerve, kid? Look I don't mean to shit on your little flavor of the month, (which one is it now? Apex legends? Fortnite? PUBG?) All I ask is that you don't come here and shit on the games that I played when I was your age.
>>
>>5446594
>there is room for Quest 64 in a landfill
cheeky cunt
>>
>>5446598
Not gonna lie, any of the games you just listed are better than Quest 64. This is coming from someone who grew up on Quest 64 and only barely played PUBG when I got a free copy.

Quest 64 is just not a very good game. Nostalgia can be powerful, but Quest 64 is objectively not a very good game.
>>
>>5446553
>You didn't play it.
I did play it and fuck off with your strawman. Are you the anon that said something about enjoying it with his brother? It's nice that you have a good memory tied to it, but you can't change how people overall received the game.
>>
>>5446598
What the fuck is wrong with you, like for real? Why are you this angry, trying to imitate /v/ on /vr/? I made some of the earlier posts itt listing out stuff it did well (not much) and things it did horribly, but I guess in your eyes unless someone loves this game and puts it on the same level as classics then the person is a zoomer or something.

idk dude, have fun whatever it is you're trying to accomplish here
>>
>>5446624
>What the fuck is wrong with you
I'm the only person on the planet that likes Quest 64, apparently.
>unless someone loves this game and puts it on the same level as classics then the person is a zoomer or something.
Not even close, it's just when an entire thread is piling on to shit on a game that I sincerely enjoyed, I'm not going to join in for giggles, I'm going to offer my own opinion as well.
>then the person is a zoomer or something.
I just can't believe I'm the only one who is defending this game
>>
>>5446690
So then offer your opinion and talk about it normally and not like a spastic autistic retard who can't handle differing opinions
>>
>>5446810
You first. Serious question to anyone who didn't enjoy Quest 64. Did you actually play the game for more than 10 minutes? If so, did you beat it? If you did beat the game, why did you stick with it if you hated it so much? If you didn't beat it, did you quit out of difficulty, or because you genuinely weren't interested?

I'm not that anon, but I'll answer your questions as someone else who did enjoy the game.

I have put many hours in Quest 64. I've beaten the game 3 separate times, each time doing a different build. I find the story charming, Shannon Stork is an interesting character in my eyes, and the combat is more fun to me than more traditional turn based games because it allows for some reaction outside of your turn.

I love the game, I've even played the gbc remake to completion once, and I plan to do it again if I ever find a cartridge for it. Hell if I die rich I'm going to buy a tomb for myself and have the walls inscribe with a walkthrough for it -complete with the ascii art- just to fuck with people on the off chance archaeologists find it years later. I'll never regret playing it in my life. All that said though, I can never really recommend the game to anyone else while being honest with them.

Loving Quest 64 is like being in a fan group for bad movies, you have to admit there are flaws in order to appreciate it more.

You're not the only person. I liked its atmosphere, but I also played it without the influence of any reviews as a child before ever discovering PSX RPGs. Went back and played it recently and still enjoyed it some, 7/10

By knowing what you like, even if no one else on earth would agree with you. Moving past the need for validation from others enjoying the same media as you is step towards knowing yourself.

No. It had a certain charm to it.

If you never played a RPG before and a N64 was all you got, this was quite okay. Same as Mystic Quest.

I have it on my xbox original and ive played about 10 hours, had to restart a few times because I just kept getting fucked up by monsters.

I just suck I guess but this game is hard

It's basically a nearly 1 for 1 port of the 64 game, which is kinda impressive if you think about it. It actually has more story content than the 64 game, like actual cutscenes with narrative.

I only played it on emulator. I remember I thought I found a copy of it at a used games store some years ago, but it turns out it was some shovelware reskin of a puzzle game. Turns out there are two Quest franchise games on gameboy. Something nearly identical happened when I tried finding a copy of the GBC port of Dragon's Lair (play a rom of it if you can, it's kinda shocking that they managed to port Dragon's Lair to gameboy almost one for one.) But the game I bought (from the same store) was actually a reskin of some platformer about kids going to a circus.

I was pretty depressed that it happened two times in like 2 months.
