So is this basically my best option for portable retro emulation?
>>5359527Not if you like SNES
>>5359527That's not a Switch.
>>5359538He said portable
>>5359538PC, PSX? Depending on his definition of portable, windows tablet or laptop is best. I actually love my Surface 3 for that reason.
>>5359527It's pretty darn good>>5359536That's a Vita, not a PSP. SNES runs great on the Vita.
>>5359527Its okay but>GDP XD Plus>Dingoo a380>GPD Win2 >Ipad miniHow about those?>>5359536That's the PSP you are talking about; he uploaded a pic of a PS Vita.
The Vita scene is HOT HOT HOT right now. BIG things on the horizon, from a 3.70 exploit to a possible fw downgrader.Install Adrenaline and then keep it open all day, if that's all you really want it for. Get a 3G version and put a gigantic SD card inside. Play in glorious OLED. Play PS4 remotely (yes, even with it hacked). The world is your oyster, op.
>>5359856I though the vita's highest FW was 3.69
>Stuck using cores based on decade+ old versions of Snes9x>Even the 2002 core doesn’t run all games full speed>If and when they do run full speed they’ll still be inaccurate with shit audio emulation Not to mention your only option for sharp pixels is a TINY integer scaled image that’s barely bigger than a postage stamp. Pay the extra money and get a New 3DS with IPS screens off eBay. Completely BTFOs the Vita for emulation.
>>5359864I myself have both a N3DS and a DSi XL, but I must say the Vita's CPU is more beefy in almost every aspect than the 3DS.
>>5359856There’s nothing to look forward to in the Vita scene other than the 3.7 hack. No one with a lick of talent is developing software for the Vita. All you see these days are hobbyists-tier homebrew apps written by greenhorns looking to get a feel for writing software.
>>5359869That’s irrelevant when the software isn’t there. Since the Jan 16th RetroArch nightly dropped the 3DS has been able to run the Genesis Plus GX core full speed. Now there’s nothing the Vita has over it other than its native POPS emulator.
>>5359876>what is Vita Yabause for the Sega Saturn>what is Stella Retroarch for Atari 2600 games>What is Vita Gens GX+ for Mega Drive(and maybe also SMS as well)>what are the several PS1 emulators for the vita including native POPS and TN-X>what is Vita MAMA and OpenBOR for Arcade>what are 2-3 GameCube emulators made for the PS Vita>What is FB Alpha>What is PrBoom for Doom 1&2>What are the respective Vita sourceports for Quake 1, 2 and Q3A.

>>5359856>Get a 3G version and put a gigantic SD card inside.you know the game card adapter works just as well, right?
>>5359826I want the portability of something for my pocket, and the ability to play stuff up to psx. I just thought playing Vita games would be a plus on top of it. The Vita is also relatively cheap used. What's the battery life on the Vita opposed to other options?
>>5360067Where else would you put the SD card?

>>5360230The process for jailbreaking a 3ds seems pretty involved vs the Vita. I'm pretty iffy when it comes to jailbreaking and don't wanna fuck it up. Am I just paranoid?
No, your phone is.
>>5360245Want a dedicated device
>>5360236Yeah. Just follow the guide at >>>/vg/hbg to the letter and you’ll be fine.I’ve hacked two of both. 3DS takes a bit longer, but its better native library, DS and GBA (through insects) backwards compatibility and SNES virtual console more than make up for it.
>>5360252through injects*Also keep in mind that the Vita can’t emulate GBA worth a damn. You’re stuck using PSP GBA emulators which are absolute shit.
>>5360252What's the battery like on 3ds vs Vita?

>>5360687>Neither is correct. It is in EU. Vita might be between 50 and 125 USD.

>>5360067>plugging up the game card slotThat, my friend, is shit tier and inelegant.
>>5360698>makes you look like a supernerd in publicPic related is classier.
Your options are 3DS which runs PSX and N64 like shit, Vita with a lack of support that will never happen, GPD XD Plus that has problems running PSP, or a GPD WIN with the cost of a computer.
>>5360260>stuck using PSP GBA emulatorsWhat is Retroarch VBA Next Core, quit spreading misinformation, I run GBA games on this core @60FPS all the time

>>5359823>SNES runs great on the Vita.Is that why snes9xtyl needs a special vita-build because it lacks PSP's Media Engine?
>>5359861What's the point of telling the world that you're ignorant?
>>5360873>snes9xtylAgain, what are Retroarch SNES9x cores. Again, play SNES games all day with zero frame drops. Quit cherry-picking bad examples to further your agenda.
>>5360894had no idea snes-games were 16:9
>>5360901They aren’t. I’m scaling it on a VitaTV connected to a projector.
Actually the 3DS is the best retro portable emulator machine but the Vita is a close second.
>>5359527>>5359536>>5359823>>5359826I have a PSP (got it in 2005 or something) and I use it for GBA, GB/GBC, Mega Drive and SNES games. SNES games still run pretty well, yes perhaps a little less well than GBA or Mega Drive, but still absolutely playable. I've played some Super Mario World on there and it's fine.
>>5360873Wait.Are you.Are you telling me that different consoles, dare I say, need DIFFERENT versions of an emulator?GOSH.
>>5360698That looks like a McLaren promotional image from the 2009-2012 era photoshopped onto the screen (going by the car design, and the fact that Hamilton is driving). But why? Because it's not a screenshot from a video game. This makes no sense.
>>5360976why different consoles? snes9xTYL is for PSP. vita's psp-mode is just so shit it needs a special build to not go full retard.
>>5360894Try playing DKC or SA1 or SFX games. I dare you.>>5360849Try playing Golden Sun.If you manage to get all of those games running at 60fps on more intensive parts. please tell me what are your settings.
>>5360987>Try playing Golden Sun.why would I? it's shit
>>5360990>calling GS shitI automatically discard every future opinion of yours. Also, you know it's not gonna run at the fps you claim.
>>5360975I find both SNES and GBA unplayably bad on PSP. I've still used it for a few non-action things like Shiren, but anything needing timing feels like shit. I've always played a lot more Genesis than either of them though so it didn't bother me a ton, but I would never recommend a PSP to someone wanting to emulate those systems.
>>5360998TempGBA on PSP is pretty spot on, I'd suggest trying that one out.
>>5360995Not him but I agree, Golden Sun was obe of the most generic dull RPGs I ever played. I understand the context you meant was seeing how it runs (badly I assume) which makes sense though.
>>5361000Thanks I may look into that. Honestly though outside of a handful of games I didn't like the GBA library a ton and those games I've played to death.A truly good SNES option would be nice though.
>>5361007As for SNES on PSP, you might want to try a mod of SNES9x made by Esmjanus. It's better than the normal Snes9x. You'll still have problems with games like DKC but for everything else it's way better.https://github.com/esmjanus/snes9xTYL/releasesSome tips:Set engine to "PSP accel. + acur. soft." or "PSP accel. + approx. soft.".Frameskip to Autochange below 1.VSync to Yes.PSP Clockspeed to 333Mhz.In Hack/debug menu, set Speedhacks to ON.Then activate Ignore Palette writes and Simple Palette writes,
>>5360975>>5360998>>5361000>>5361007gpSP kai is the GBA emulator I have on my PSP and it plays things flawlessly - in fact better than flawlessly, because you can a game like Pokemon Emerald faster than regular speed if you turn on turbo mode (which I like a lot because Pokemon I think is generally too slow, the walking takes ages, the text menus and things take longer than they should, etc.). Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen also run faster in turbo mode, although not quite as fast as Emerald for some reason. Those are really the only GBA games I've played on my PSP but they run, like I say, better than flawlessly.Mega Drive games have also run very well - I've played the Sonic games on there and they ran great. I think I played through all of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.Super Mario World for SNES I think did have some screen tearing, but it was still perfectly playable. If you've got a PSP lying around it's definitely worth installing these emulators. If you don't have one and you're looking for a portable device to play these games then maybe an Android phone is better, especially something like a OnePlus 6T which has a high-performance CPU for a relatively low price. Granted I've not used one for emulation but I'm guessing it can probably handle it.
The Vita is definitely the better bet. The popular ps2 games were remade on it, and psx emulation with retroarch and adrenaline. If you want to focus on the sony side of things the vita is a good bet. Also you can download no pay station to get anything.
>>5359826I don’t know much about emulation on those because I don’t own neither of them, but Vita has the best shape out of all handhelds and personally the comfiness of holding it is what matters the most. 3DS look-a-like, NES controller with a screen and a touchscreen tablet won’t do it for me.

>>5360698>looks like a 3DS>Android OS therefore bitches won’t fuck you
>>5360849>>5360987That’s nice and all but does it run pic related without a problem?

>>5361118Aren't those RA cores tho? Or maybe they run good because it's a PSTV rather than a "real" Vita?I'll have to test myself because I remember having unplayably bad fps with those games.
>>5361123They are RA cores, that was my point originally. On the Vita, individual emulators aren’t the route to take for the best options. The hardware is identical between the PSTV/Vita. It runs exactly like this on my Vita as well.
>>5361056>Dingoo has six buttons(not counting start and select)>NES controller
>>5359527>So is this basically my best option for portable retro emulation?it's cheap and "an" option, that's all you need to know.
>>5359826>>5361372Dingoo A320 was the best model at the time, the later A330/A380 revisions were not official and had tons of issues (shitty buttons, buggier firmware, etc). Hardly any community applications took advantage of the upgraded hardware so the higher cost was pointless.Either way, Dingoos have been out of production for 5+ years and Coolboy RS-97's run the same firmware for half the price. Dingux on RS-97 is still pretty spotty but it's getting better and it'll definitely surpass Dingoo in the next few months
As of right now it's a toss-up between a Vita and n3DS, depending on if you want the PS1 and PSP libraries or the DS library. Both great choices.Switch is definitely going to be the go-to in a few years though.
>>5361398I have a switch, but i'm not really in the mood to jailbreak it. I play a lot of the Nintendo first party games on it and don't want to risk a ban.

>>5361559That's not my fingers in the pic.
>>5362097If you're using a Vita I still suggest using RA for SNES, it's way better.
>>5361132Oh, try playing Kirby's Dreamland 3 in RA and tell me how it goes please.Last time I tried it ran with a lot of hiccups. Enough to make me not want to play it there.
>>5361118Please don't lie.Or at least test the games for more than two seconds.
>>5362460Is that a filter or overlay?
>>5362537Overlay.Vita RA can't use filters. And inb4, removing or having an overlay doesn't have any kind of impact on the fps you get. To my knowledge and as far as I've tested.
>>5362543No, I know that. That’s why I asked. What’s weird is I completed DKC using the ‘05 core with no issues. Either performance has regressed or you used the ‘05 Plus or 2010 core?
>>5362568Nah, using the normal 2005 core. But I am using the 1.7.3 version of RA tho, I'm upgrading to 1.7.6 to see if it's any different but I highly doubt it.
>>5362568Not that anon, but I've been using the Snes9x current core (not 02, 05, or 10), and I get excellent results with DKC on a pi3 b+, which is shit compared to any PC-based emu box.
>>5362568>>5362570And got the same results.I'm just inclined to think PSTV has better hardware than a normal Vita.
Wait, got way better results with Esmjanus' s9xTYLcm version for Vita with the same fiddling in >>5361024Got steady 60fps through the whole first stage. The emulator was kind of a bitch to set because I'm using UMA for my retro roms (I'm dedicating ux0 to Vita games only) but this was a great test tho.
Color me impressed, Super Mario RPG also runs nice. I'm afraid there're going to be serious drops for certain attacks tho.
>>5361118Yeah, nah. SMRPG is borderline unplayable. I've tried all cores.
>>5362652I'm samefag. So far most games I've tried with tha run steadily nice but they still can't compare to Snes9x on a 3ds, moreso a New 3ds.So, if you only have a Vita, it's not the end of the world. If you have access to a 3DS that should be your first option tho.If you own both then it comes down to whatever console, buttons or screens you like more but emulating on both is pretty good seeing everything I've tested.
>>5362701To elaborate on my post:These are the emulators I use on a New3DS (but they have almost the same performance on an Old 3DS).For NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and SMS and TGfx16 (and PCE CD) I use bubble2k16's emulators. They're good, simple, fast and some like the last two emulate more than one machine (with the minimal fiddling, temperPCE runs also CD games at full speed). You can also speed them up at the press of a button and it's waaaay faster than anything you could speed up in Vita. For Gameboy and GBC, Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket I use the Retroarch cores with are also super good.As for Vita, I use TempGBA on Adrenaline which is pretty much flawless and RA for everything else.I'm considering using s9xTYLcm now seeing how stable the slower games are but I still like the 3ds' results more.Pic related are my emulators. Also, VC shouldn't be an option. AT ALL. Except for GBA.
>>5359962any recommendations for getting a cheap Vita? I haven't seen them under 180 leaf buxs

>>5362753It actually looks horrible.
>>5360985it's because vita lacks media engine, simple as this and it stills runs shit compared to retroarch.
>>5362807It's totally a PSTV then. No way a normal Vita can reach that speed. Unless you fiddled hard in the settings.
>>5362812it's my normal vita i don't know what you are doing

Just go with 3DS. If you want portable NES, SNES, Master System, Megadrive, NeoGeo Pocket, Wonderswan, PC Engine, Turboduo CD and quite possibly Sega CD, 3DS is the best option. To boot you have also great 3ds and DS games, all of that in just one portable machine, running at full speed.Vita can do all of the aforementioned except DS and SNES but it makes up for emulating PS on the go so, do you like more SNES and DS or PS and Vita games?

>>5366034Snes 2005 as indicated in >>5361118
>>5366053Yeah, not sure what the difference is. Here is a snap on my Vita (instead of my VitaTV), same core, same clocks, has a 0.1 frame variance. Odd. Are you using the latest nightly?
>>5366060No, I'm using the latest stable 1.7.6
>>5366108Maybe thats the difference? I wouldn't think so but at this point I wonder, cause that's the only difference I can find between our setups
>>5366112I'm assuming you haven't changed the default settings in Video or stuff like that
>>5366114Pretty sure the only change I made was to set the output to 16:9
>>5366136I give up really. If anyone else is getting steady 60fps on Vita's RA with LOLIcon I'll gladly accept tips.
>>5366136This was weird.I deleted the retroarch.cfg from the Vita and ran the app again so it could create a new and... the results speak for themselves.DKC has steady 59.9 even on the second stage which I asume is more graphic instensive.Kirby's Dreamland 3 also runs fine except at pic related screen which has a leaf with wind effect but outside of that it runs fine even with lots of enemies.SMRPG runs fine all the except except when special attacks occur and the drop in frames only last while said special attack lasts. This leads me to assume PC Engine CD games will also run perfectly fine (Sapphire and Rondo of Blood in my case) and GBA games too.Sorry for calling you a liar anon, I was wrong the whole time. Deleting the .cfg file fixed everything so surely I messed up something in the past.
I have a GPD XD+ and while I love it for 3D titles and Moonlight, to play my PC games comfortably in bed because I'm a lazy fuck, it's just not a comfortable layout.Nobody ever talks about this, but the d-pad is garbage, it's in the wrong place if you play majority 2D games and the whole thing is just not ergonimically designed. If I could find something like the RS97, but running Android, that'd be it forever.
>>5366546>Sorry for calling you a liar anonNo worries. Honestly, given I have both a Vita and VitaTV, I was worried it was an issue with your hardware manifesting in a weird way. I am glad a simple config reset fixed your problems. As for PCECD, I can assure you Rondo of Blood works at a solid 60FPS. At this point, the only console I cannot get generally full speed out of RA (not including the Saturn, as the Yabause core is a POC) with on the Vita is the VB, and that is because the BeetleVB core has not been optimized for it, so it generally runs at half speed (25-35 FPS). It's stupid, but I wish I knew more about the coding side so I could make it run fullspeed just so I can carry VB Warioland in my pocket, but I decided to switch majors to Biomechanical Engineering, didn't feel like being a code monkey for a living.
>>5365801>In terms of using PSP-homebrew Vita is second-class due to missing ME, all I said.not the same guy as the one you're replying too... so basically you're talking about that you are not taking advantage of anything hardware vita-wise while playing psp homebrew while playing, let's say, through adrenaline, because the vita lacks the ME the psp has?
Man the Vita screen is so much prettier and better for pretty much everything including retro gaming in RA.Even the Model 2 screen is way better if you're not an OLED fag.
The Wii is pretty portable. And, it's the only portable console with 240p out.
>>5359527yes. watch modern vintage gamings vid on vita vs switch. basically vita wins until switch developes more
>>5362724based lapis poster
>>5363393The New 3DS has a stronger CPU than the Vita. And the original argument was whether the Vita could run the games at full speed, not whether it was better at doing so than other machines. What's your point?
>>5367826>The New 3DS has a stronger CPU than the VitaIt doesn’t, though. Higher clock speed != stronger.Compare RetroArch on both of them. The Vita can actually fast forward in Genesis Plus GX, and the PCSX-ReARMed core can run a good number of games full speed WITH sound enabled, unlike the New 3DS. It’s a simple matter of software optimization. The Vita can easily handle SNES emulation on par with, if not better than, the SNES VC. Problem is its homebrew scene is dead.
>>5367850>Higher clock speed != strongerIt sure does when it comes to emulation.
>>5367867If the CPUs were equivalent in every other area, sure.
GPD something something
>>5367867Look up IPC dude.
>>5359527I play on my smarphone
>>5362854From the same people who start threads complaining that obscure consoles are never talked about when only less than 1% of the population will ever have a chance to own one. Stupid kikes, in other words
>>5365612Im tossed up on wether to get a cheap Android phone (epic 2) or a vita
>>5367960I'd rather get tablet.
>>5369072I’d say would you rather have dedicated controls- that’s the main reason I bought a Vita.
>>5369331Dedicated controls are cool, but i already have a sf30 pro i was finna use with it
>>5369478Is that a Smartphone, or a tablet?
>>5370992>not sure if bait or serious
>>5359527What non-8bitdo USB Sega Saturn gamepads are there these days besides random Mainland China or Hong Kong bootlegs and retrolink?
>>5371008I thought sf30 was a type of Android device at first, sorry.
>>5371063retrobit in april (or whenever)
all this retroarch vs individual emus; I quite enjoy messing around with settings and trying things out, but retroarch seems so bloated to me, specially because I just want to use the snes emulator. Installed it once on the vita, was unistalling 2 hours later, since then I've stuck with a native homebrew vita snes emu, and also a psp emu through adrenaline. At least the games I've been playing run without slowdowns in either or both, after some configs.
>>5373441Can you explain the bloated thing? At first I felt a little overwhelmed with the ammount of cores and Video options but once you find the best core for each console and leave the other options default, it's nice to have all your emulators in just one place.Individual Vita emus aren't too good and I'm afraid are more actually bloated than retroarch, besides just being disorganized.I'd encourage you to give RA another try and be willing to learn it to see how good it is for what you want.
>>5373456bloated in the sense it's too much for what I want to get out of it: emulate 2 or 3 snes games. There is stuff in there I'll probably never check out. Yeah, I would give it another try sometime though...
>>5373462Oh, if it's for 2 or 3 games only then I totally understand. I'd still encourage to try RA for that if you want the best experience emulating said games tho. It's not a matter of shilling it, it's more about it's the best option there is for the Vita currently. At first I had problems with low fps on it but after deleting the .cfg file and starting again I'm running SNES games blazing fast there without even LOLIcon. At most, you have to set a rom folder, tell RA where it is and pick the 2005 core. You can ignore most of the other things since the default options are good enough. There's also an option for scanning folders and RA will automatically sort your roms by console which is nice and eliminates navigating to folders.
>>5373470Not him, but for me retroarch performed way worse than native emulators for playing snes games. For gba I'm using a psp emulator which is really really good
>>5373507I'm using TempGBA.I still have to test the VBA Core on RA after fixing my fps with SNES.
>>5373515http://wololo.net/2016/05/11/psppsvita-gba-emulator-uo-gpsp-kai-v3-4-test-4-build-225/I'm using this one and with the bubble works really good, flawless with everything that I've tested
How's this thing?
>>5373790OKay, but not as good as the Vita, N3DS, Dingoo a380 nor Coolboy RS-97
>>5373790i've read that it's not so good for long gaming sessions because of it's shape, it also has an inaccesible/unremovable battery in case you want to play only connected to the power socket using the charger. it has the advantage that you can play with a ps3 controller, if you have one, though (i believe the console is required to set it up). Specs should be similar to the psp model before it.
>>5361398How the fuck do you get SNES running on n3DS at a reasonable speed? I've installed the retroarch SNES cores as cias but I'm still getting terrible fucking performance.
>>5374235By installing Snes9x.https://gbatemp.net/threads/snes9x-for-old-3ds.435568/
>>5373790Horrible.Softwarewise it's as good as a normal PSP but its shape and button layout makes it prone to fucking hands beyond repair. It's not comfortable at ALL.
>>5367850>PCSX-ReARMedMaybe I'm just pants on head retarded, but why wouldn't you just use the adrenaline psp emulator to run ps1 eboots natively?
>>5359527The screen resolution is kinda fucked if you want integer scaling. Gameboy Advance is the only system that really scales up well on it. Having said that, it's a good system for emulating. The screen is very sharp and colorful even if the resolution can be a problem. The best portable for emulators right now is a modded Switch with a D-pad joycon mod. 720p is the perfect resolution for most games, and with a sharp bilinear scaler even the SNES and NES scale up well with no noticeable distortion.
>>5374329because most psx games run flawlessly with pcsx rearmed and it's more convenient to use, also it's perfectly scaled unless the blurred adrenaline.
>>5374414how is the battery life with the switch and is it easy to hack newer models?
>>5374414It’s not weird at all. It’s half of 1080p, and games get a perfect 2x scale compared to a 4x scale on 1080p displays.
>>5374235Not with retroarch, thats for fucking sure. Snes9x is basically perfecto.
>>5374414GPD XD Plus is better
>>5376025>Not GPD Win 2, Vita 1000, Vita 2000, or Coolboy RS-97.
now that emuparadise is fucked, where do you guys get your roms?
>>5376239Vita is not capable of playing as much as the XD Plus and the Win 2 is horribly overpriced.
>>5376584the eye, nblog, cdromance
Just got a Vita for free, what do I emulate and how?
