So is this basically my best option for portable retro emulation?
>>
>>5359527
Not if you like SNES
>>
>>5359527
That's not a Switch.
>>
>>5359538
He said portable
>>
>>5359538
PC, PSX? Depending on his definition of portable, windows tablet or laptop is best. I actually love my Surface 3 for that reason.
>>
>>5359527
It's pretty darn good
>>5359536
That's a Vita, not a PSP. SNES runs great on the Vita.
>>
>>5359527
Its okay but
>GDP XD Plus
>Dingoo a380
>GPD Win2
>Ipad mini
How about those?
>>5359536
That's the PSP you are talking about; he uploaded a pic of a PS Vita.
>>
The Vita scene is HOT HOT HOT right now. BIG things on the horizon, from a 3.70 exploit to a possible fw downgrader.

Install Adrenaline and then keep it open all day, if that's all you really want it for. Get a 3G version and put a gigantic SD card inside. Play in glorious OLED. Play PS4 remotely (yes, even with it hacked). The world is your oyster, op.
>>
>>5359856
I though the vita's highest FW was 3.69
>>
>Stuck using cores based on decade+ old versions of Snes9x
>Even the 2002 core doesn’t run all games full speed
>If and when they do run full speed they’ll still be inaccurate with shit audio emulation

Not to mention your only option for sharp pixels is a TINY integer scaled image that’s barely bigger than a postage stamp. Pay the extra money and get a New 3DS with IPS screens off eBay. Completely BTFOs the Vita for emulation.
>>
>>5359864
I myself have both a N3DS and a DSi XL, but I must say the Vita's CPU is more beefy in almost every aspect than the 3DS.
>>
>>5359856
There’s nothing to look forward to in the Vita scene other than the 3.7 hack. No one with a lick of talent is developing software for the Vita. All you see these days are hobbyists-tier homebrew apps written by greenhorns looking to get a feel for writing software.
>>
>>5359869
That’s irrelevant when the software isn’t there. Since the Jan 16th RetroArch nightly dropped the 3DS has been able to run the Genesis Plus GX core full speed.
Now there’s nothing the Vita has over it other than its native POPS emulator.

I have a PSP (got it in 2005 or something) and I use it for GBA, GB/GBC, Mega Drive and SNES games. SNES games still run pretty well, yes perhaps a little less well than GBA or Mega Drive, but still absolutely playable. I've played some Super Mario World on there and it's fine.

I find both SNES and GBA unplayably bad on PSP. I've still used it for a few non-action things like Shiren, but anything needing timing feels like shit.

I've always played a lot more Genesis than either of them though so it didn't bother me a ton, but I would never recommend a PSP to someone wanting to emulate those systems.
>>
>>5360998
TempGBA on PSP is pretty spot on, I'd suggest trying that one out.
>>
>>5360995
Not him but I agree, Golden Sun was obe of the most generic dull RPGs I ever played. I understand the context you meant was seeing how it runs (badly I assume) which makes sense though.
>>
>>5361000
Thanks I may look into that. Honestly though outside of a handful of games I didn't like the GBA library a ton and those games I've played to death.

A truly good SNES option would be nice though.
>>
>>5361007
As for SNES on PSP, you might want to try a mod of SNES9x made by Esmjanus.
It's better than the normal Snes9x. You'll still have problems with games like DKC but for everything else it's way better.

https://github.com/esmjanus/snes9xTYL/releases

Some tips:
Set engine to "PSP accel. + acur. soft." or "PSP accel. + approx. soft.".
Frameskip to Autochange below 1.
VSync to Yes.
PSP Clockspeed to 333Mhz.
In Hack/debug menu, set Speedhacks to ON.
Then activate Ignore Palette writes and Simple Palette writes,

gpSP kai is the GBA emulator I have on my PSP and it plays things flawlessly - in fact better than flawlessly, because you can a game like Pokemon Emerald faster than regular speed if you turn on turbo mode (which I like a lot because Pokemon I think is generally too slow, the walking takes ages, the text menus and things take longer than they should, etc.). Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen also run faster in turbo mode, although not quite as fast as Emerald for some reason. Those are really the only GBA games I've played on my PSP but they run, like I say, better than flawlessly.

Mega Drive games have also run very well - I've played the Sonic games on there and they ran great. I think I played through all of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.

Super Mario World for SNES I think did have some screen tearing, but it was still perfectly playable. If you've got a PSP lying around it's definitely worth installing these emulators. If you don't have one and you're looking for a portable device to play these games then maybe an Android phone is better, especially something like a OnePlus 6T which has a high-performance CPU for a relatively low price. Granted I've not used one for emulation but I'm guessing it can probably handle it.
>>
The Vita is definitely the better bet. The popular ps2 games were remade on it, and psx emulation with retroarch and adrenaline. If you want to focus on the sony side of things the vita is a good bet. Also you can download no pay station to get anything.
>>
>>5359826
I don’t know much about emulation on those because I don’t own neither of them, but Vita has the best shape out of all handhelds and personally the comfiness of holding it is what matters the most. 3DS look-a-like, NES controller with a screen and a touchscreen tablet won’t do it for me.

Aren't those RA cores tho? Or maybe they run good because it's a PSTV rather than a "real" Vita?
I'll have to test myself because I remember having unplayably bad fps with those games.
>>
>>5361123
They are RA cores, that was my point originally. On the Vita, individual emulators aren’t the route to take for the best options. The hardware is identical between the PSTV/Vita. It runs exactly like this on my Vita as well.

>>5361372
Dingoo A320 was the best model at the time, the later A330/A380 revisions were not official and had tons of issues (shitty buttons, buggier firmware, etc). Hardly any community applications took advantage of the upgraded hardware so the higher cost was pointless.

Either way, Dingoos have been out of production for 5+ years and Coolboy RS-97's run the same firmware for half the price. Dingux on RS-97 is still pretty spotty but it's getting better and it'll definitely surpass Dingoo in the next few months
>>
As of right now it's a toss-up between a Vita and n3DS, depending on if you want the PS1 and PSP libraries or the DS library. Both great choices.
Switch is definitely going to be the go-to in a few years though.

>>
>>5362460

>>
>>5362537
Overlay.
Vita RA can't use filters. And inb4, removing or having an overlay doesn't have any kind of impact on the fps you get. To my knowledge and as far as I've tested.
>>
>>5362543
No, I know that. That’s why I asked.

What’s weird is I completed DKC using the ‘05 core with no issues. Either performance has regressed or you used the ‘05 Plus or 2010 core?
>>
>>5362568
Nah, using the normal 2005 core.
But I am using the 1.7.3 version of RA tho, I'm upgrading to 1.7.6 to see if it's any different but I highly doubt it.
>>
>>5362568

Not that anon, but I've been using the Snes9x current core (not 02, 05, or 10), and I get excellent results with DKC on a pi3 b+, which is shit compared to any PC-based emu box.
>>

>>

>>
>>5361118

Yeah, nah. SMRPG is borderline unplayable. I've tried all cores.
>>
>>5362652
I'm samefag.
So far most games I've tried with tha run steadily nice but they still can't compare to Snes9x on a 3ds, moreso a New 3ds.
So, if you only have a Vita, it's not the end of the world. If you have access to a 3DS that should be your first option tho.
If you own both then it comes down to whatever console, buttons or screens you like more but emulating on both is pretty good seeing everything I've tested.
>>
>>5362701
To elaborate on my post:
These are the emulators I use on a New3DS (but they have almost the same performance on an Old 3DS).
For NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and SMS and TGfx16 (and PCE CD) I use bubble2k16's emulators. They're good, simple, fast and some like the last two emulate more than one machine (with the minimal fiddling, temperPCE runs also CD games at full speed). You can also speed them up at the press of a button and it's waaaay faster than anything you could speed up in Vita.

For Gameboy and GBC, Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket I use the Retroarch cores with are also super good.

As for Vita, I use TempGBA on Adrenaline which is pretty much flawless and RA for everything else.
I'm considering using s9xTYLcm now seeing how stable the slower games are but I still like the 3ds' results more.
Pic related are my emulators.

Also, VC shouldn't be an option. AT ALL. Except for GBA.

Technically you’re going from 333/444 (min/max stock clock) to 500 (overclock), 167-56MHz is not going to damage it at all, 2GHz (500x 4 cores) is the factory clock speed ceiling. Sony underclocked it for battery life, not longevity. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_Cortex-A9

The LOLIcon plugin is Kernel level, allows system wide and per application clock speed overrides, and is the only plugin that goes to 500MHz.

>>
>>5363517

I never had to buy a specific battery to hack mine. After a year or so they had to the point where if you just hadn't updated your PSP then they could hack your firmware. Switch has been hacked for that long but there's no agreed upon hacking method, just many options.

Vita doesn't reach anywhere near damaging temperatures while overclocked.

>>5363629
That doesn't have anything to do with anything. Max temperature at a certain wattage is entirely dependent on quality of cooling.

Just go with 3DS. If you want portable NES, SNES, Master System, Megadrive, NeoGeo Pocket, Wonderswan, PC Engine, Turboduo CD and quite possibly Sega CD, 3DS is the best option. To boot you have also great 3ds and DS games, all of that in just one portable machine, running at full speed.

Vita can do all of the aforementioned except DS and SNES but it makes up for emulating PS on the go so, do you like more SNES and DS or PS and Vita games?

This was weird.
I deleted the retroarch.cfg from the Vita and ran the app again so it could create a new and... the results speak for themselves.

DKC has steady 59.9 even on the second stage which I asume is more graphic instensive.

Kirby's Dreamland 3 also runs fine except at pic related screen which has a leaf with wind effect but outside of that it runs fine even with lots of enemies.

SMRPG runs fine all the except except when special attacks occur and the drop in frames only last while said special attack lasts.

This leads me to assume PC Engine CD games will also run perfectly fine (Sapphire and Rondo of Blood in my case) and GBA games too.

Sorry for calling you a liar anon, I was wrong the whole time. Deleting the .cfg file fixed everything so surely I messed up something in the past.
>>
I have a GPD XD+ and while I love it for 3D titles and Moonlight, to play my PC games comfortably in bed because I'm a lazy fuck, it's just not a comfortable layout.

Nobody ever talks about this, but the d-pad is garbage, it's in the wrong place if you play majority 2D games and the whole thing is just not ergonimically designed.

If I could find something like the RS97, but running Android, that'd be it forever.
>>
>>5366546
>Sorry for calling you a liar anon
No worries. Honestly, given I have both a Vita and VitaTV, I was worried it was an issue with your hardware manifesting in a weird way. I am glad a simple config reset fixed your problems.
As for PCECD, I can assure you Rondo of Blood works at a solid 60FPS.
At this point, the only console I cannot get generally full speed out of RA (not including the Saturn, as the Yabause core is a POC) with on the Vita is the VB, and that is because the BeetleVB core has not been optimized for it, so it generally runs at half speed (25-35 FPS). It's stupid, but I wish I knew more about the coding side so I could make it run fullspeed just so I can carry VB Warioland in my pocket, but I decided to switch majors to Biomechanical Engineering, didn't feel like being a code monkey for a living.

not the same guy as the one you're replying too... so basically you're talking about that you are not taking advantage of anything hardware vita-wise while playing psp homebrew while playing, let's say, through adrenaline, because the vita lacks the ME the psp has?

The New 3DS has a stronger CPU than the Vita. And the original argument was whether the Vita could run the games at full speed, not whether it was better at doing so than other machines.
What's your point?
>>
>>5367826
>The New 3DS has a stronger CPU than the Vita
It doesn’t, though. Higher clock speed != stronger.
Compare RetroArch on both of them. The Vita can actually fast forward in Genesis Plus GX, and the PCSX-ReARMed core can run a good number of games full speed WITH sound enabled, unlike the New 3DS.

It’s a simple matter of software optimization. The Vita can easily handle SNES emulation on par with, if not better than, the SNES VC. Problem is its homebrew scene is dead.
>>
>>5367850

all this retroarch vs individual emus; I quite enjoy messing around with settings and trying things out, but retroarch seems so bloated to me, specially because I just want to use the snes emulator. Installed it once on the vita, was unistalling 2 hours later, since then I've stuck with a native homebrew vita snes emu, and also a psp emu through adrenaline. At least the games I've been playing run without slowdowns in either or both, after some configs.
>>
>>5373441
Can you explain the bloated thing?
At first I felt a little overwhelmed with the ammount of cores and Video options but once you find the best core for each console and leave the other options default, it's nice to have all your emulators in just one place.
Individual Vita emus aren't too good and I'm afraid are more actually bloated than retroarch, besides just being disorganized.

I'd encourage you to give RA another try and be willing to learn it to see how good it is for what you want.

bloated in the sense it's too much for what I want to get out of it: emulate 2 or 3 snes games. There is stuff in there I'll probably never check out. Yeah, I would give it another try sometime though...
>>
>>5373462
Oh, if it's for 2 or 3 games only then I totally understand. I'd still encourage to try RA for that if you want the best experience emulating said games tho. It's not a matter of shilling it, it's more about it's the best option there is for the Vita currently.
At first I had problems with low fps on it but after deleting the .cfg file and starting again I'm running SNES games blazing fast there without even LOLIcon. At most, you have to set a rom folder, tell RA where it is and pick the 2005 core. You can ignore most of the other things since the default options are good enough.

There's also an option for scanning folders and RA will automatically sort your roms by console which is nice and eliminates navigating to folders.

>>
>>5359527
The screen resolution is kinda fucked if you want integer scaling. Gameboy Advance is the only system that really scales up well on it. Having said that, it's a good system for emulating. The screen is very sharp and colorful even if the resolution can be a problem.

The best portable for emulators right now is a modded Switch with a D-pad joycon mod. 720p is the perfect resolution for most games, and with a sharp bilinear scaler even the SNES and NES scale up well with no noticeable distortion.
>>
>>5374329
because most psx games run flawlessly with pcsx rearmed and it's more convenient to use, also it's perfectly scaled unless the blurred adrenaline.
