Which are you favorite retro maps?
>>5290595Can't think of my favorite, but out of the FF ones (which are otherwise pretty unremarkable and artificial-feeling) this one and the one below it stood out:
>>5290607Actually no, the one below it sucks now that I see it. So much empty space. I just like the big capital city.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NFmgQqLmSothe initially weird in-game rendering and eventual explanation are so cool
post bgm along wif maps, pls
change this board to /japconsolecocksuckers/
Once you have seen a map, you have seen all of them.
>>5291707I love Athkatla and Amn, but to me you can't beat that free-roaming Sword Coast. Would unfog that baby all day everyday.
>>5292293>Just a big squareSeriously the worst map/overworld in any game.
does this count
>>5292528>Release: 4 January 2001what do you think
who cares about maps, it's just an arbitrary arrangement of geographical features and settlements
>>5292293actually this is the best one because it has a little bit of everything without needlessy being too much (exactly one town, castle, desert, lake, forest, mountain)
haven't found full x(
My intro into classic fantasy settings, many nostalgic memories. Still own FF4 for GBA too.
>>5291015Kinda loses something without the inward mode7 scrolling.
>>5291985Patrician choice, anon. I came here to post this.
>>5292610what is it about this map that is so memorable and timeless
>>5292570>describing every Zelda map.
>>5292732i guess they know what they're doing when it come to world design
>>5293136if only 90s game devs took an intro algebraic topology course
>>5293136how many old games have toroidal wraparound anyway? is it hard to do spherical with 2d graphics for some reason?
>>5293283ok i looked htis up and found a neat post explaining it: https://www.redblobgames.com/x/1640-hexagon-tiling-of-sphere/
>>5293283No, it's actually very easy.
>>5291963True but im still hoping for a new golden sun
>>5293451seems like it would be, but it would probably feel confusing for the player, which is why it's never done. i think the overworld in demon's crest is spherical, but it uses mode 7 graphics.
>>5291985Great choice my friend!
>>5293451shit would be hard on ancient hardware. tori are trivial to map to tile-based hardware because the wrap-around behavior of hardware scrolling gives rectangular maps a naturally torid topology. spheres on the other hand admit no such clean mapping.
>>5293819to add, spherical worlds are much easier on 3d hardware with matrix transformation machinery or quaternions, but I can't think of many examples. rectangular arrays are just easier to think about for programmers and gamers, I guess.
>>5293819Case in point, Final Fantasy 2 tries to do a spherical map screen. It rotates SLOWLY as the little 8bit CPU tries to render.
Maybe "Hunter" from 1991 (for Amiga and Atari ST).One of the earliest open world/sandbox games with 100% 3D graphics that already had all the trademarks of the genre: huge open world, countless vehicles at land, sea and air etc.
>>5292656Not sure but it is. Same with Face
I really love this M&M one
>>5293870That world is still square though, it's just the map itself trying to look spherical for some reason.
I always loved that peaceful feeling of the overworld map in Super Mario World, with the stylized look it has and the little clouds floating by.
>>5293136https://youtu.be/LIfF8Qxdejs?t=848Does this look like a Torus to you?
>>5294985it looks like a sphere but it's actually a torus intersecting itself, or a spindle torus.
>>5295050Possible, but canonically is not a ring torus. It clearly has a sherical form. You can say it's not natural for a sphere warping that way, while I say, how can you assume that it isn't just some magic portal that conducts from one pole to the other?
>>5295074wow, i wonder if lavos is responsible for this. indeed the deepest lore
>>5293819now i fcking get it
>>5293819I didn't say on SNES hardware you autistic anal buccaneer.
>>5295361the context of the discussion is old games with 2d graphics, which it isn't hard to figure out means gen 4 and earlier. and i've already pointed out that it can be done (quite easily in fact) on snes hardware, such as in demon's crest, which uses mode 7 graphics on its overworld: >>5293541
FF7, CT, Mario 3, FFT...
I always liked this one, although it's quite unbalanced. The top position is the best, followed by the bottom right position. The bottom left is objectively the worst, unless you go full aggressive and invade other people's territory.
>>5297201Woah, what's the deal with this game? Because that map is trippy.
>>5297212it's set in an asteroid field where the asteroids have bases dug out inside of them. your goal is to deactivate 15 computers inside the bases.the gameplay is completely open-ended, and you can infiltrate them in any order you want.
I wish I was autistic enough to beat this game.

>>5298207May I humbly inquire as to what game this is?
>>5298523Legacy of the Wizard
>>5298549Thank you fellow /vr/trooper.
>>5298207i just played htis for like an hour because of your post and got nowhere lol
>>5298682I didn't last long either which is a shame because the music is great and the level design seems interesting. I just have neither the time nor patience to get through it.
>>5298815ok i just got instakilled by a mimic that respawned behind me blocking my path and refused to die no matter how many times i shot it even though i had already killed it once before. it was also literally the only thing in the game so far with the ability instakill me, all other enemies doing only one damage (out of 100 max health), and i had been playing for hours exploring a wide variety of different areas, including places i probably shouldn't have been yet. this game is shit.
>>5299023oh i should mention that the mimic was near the start, but it was out of reach to the character i was playing as, so i had to switch to a different character that could jump higher, forcing me to backtrack all the way to the starting area if i wanted to get to what i didn't yet know was a deathtrap. also i didn't bother with the password save feature because there are like 40 different characters you have to input and they're all in japanese.
>>5292491exploring this world as a kid was amazing, not even with any particular goal in mind but just roaming around looking for cool shit ..
>>5294847underrated pebble beach posterawful filter though
