I want to get less shit at pokemon style and design by drawing a pokemon family daily. If you want to be less shit too then please join me! I would love to see your takes on them in whatever style and aptitude level. Together we can can eventually suck less.
Gonna go start bulbasaur now. Anyone up for it?

Ayy looking forward to it! What sort of style are you ging for?
I'm planning to go through them in order, to force me to do ones that aren't usually my favourites and develop a bit more design flexibility. I'm also going for the early style where everything was a bit less rounded and more muscular.

Do me and every other artist on the planet a favor and don’t waste your time trying to learn how to draw. Chances are you’ll drop it in a month or two anyway, so save yourself the time/effort and just go back to jerking it to children or dogs or whatever

You continue to prove my point. The art community wants nothing to do with this babbybrain 12-year-old bullshit. Maybe you’d have better luck in animation. There’s nobody not repugnant doing animation outside of a few animation houses and like, Steven Universe staff with any semblance of morals or sense of consequences for the goofy shit they let fly out their mouth anymore. Good luck kiddo

>>37363069
I'm using an app called sketch, it's pretty simple but I don't think a tonne of fancy tools are necessary for practice or more basic draws like this. If youre on a computer than paint.net is decent too. You might find it looks less computery if you use solid shadows and lights, and it will also help you get familiar with confidently defining shapes using shadows

>>37365982
For a newbie you're doing great. I recommend you think more about shape and anatomy (imagine the bone structure, maybe like you're rigging a 3d model or puppet) and you'll get much better dynamic poses. You're ambitious and that's good, and your capture of lighting with geometry is a great start. I'll be real though this is obviously a beginner's piece. Keep going!
>>
>>37366797
that's really cool

Oh wow I wasn't even anticipating constructive feedback. Thanks man! I'll give the structured pose a shot and practice some more with those. Dunno shit about drawing animal body types so I'll probably do some gestures of dogs and horses and stuff in general.

>>37367897
Yo there's a site you might like, it's called line of action. It's really fantastic for practicing animals, and people too. Would recommend lesson mode, which gives you a buzz ch of 30 second ones to get you used to capturing the feel of a body shape and motion quickly, then increasingly ones a few minutes to an hour long for practice at more detailed anatomy and stuff. Totally free, I've found it super useful. Anyone lurking on drawing in this thread should go check it out if they want to improve their anatomy.

Great colors and I dig the expressions. The feet aren't grounded and it looks like you added the grass after the fact instead of considering where they'd be placed. The eyes further away on Bulbasaur and Ivysaur both seem too small as well. These are just nickpicks though. These obviously have a lot skill behind them and your Venusaur def one of my favorite renditions.

>>
>>37369293
Thanks man, I honestly appreciate the nitpicking! Hahaha you really nailed it with the grass. I did the shadow on bulbasaur then thought to add the grass at the last second. I like it though as a little framing, and will work to better thoughtfully integrate it. Yeah I definitely need to work on connecting the feet to the ground better. Feet are a bit of a sticking point, you definitely pinpointed another big weakness. I paint fantasy stuff and have been doing a bunch of claw studies lately to try and bring them in line with everything else, after spending so many years just doing monster headshots. And yeah I see what you mean with the eyes! I'll keep an eye on that going forward. Cheers mate, I really appreciate the advice. And thank you! That's high praise! I'd love it if you would pick apart the char line too when they're all done.
>>37369519
Another beautiful piece! I love the simplified but very natural feeling shapes you draw them with. I would love to see more of your art.
>>
>>37363108
By app do you mean that you're drawing on a tablet, like an iPad or something?
Do you use a stylus or just your finger?
>>
>>37370734
Yeah, with the little stylus. No tilt and kind of basic pen pressure but it's alright, can draw decent stuff after getting used to it, can't complain even if a proper drawing tablet would be much more user friendly. On desktop I use photoshop elements for actual complicated art. Would use paint tool sai but my computer can't handle it.

>>37371340
10/10 made the thread worthwhile
>>37371345
I'm here, I'm using a free app called sketch, and just using the basic brush at full opacity. There isn't really anything in this app that can replicate the old watercolour style, but it's surprisingly fun trying to get that feel using solid colours.

Nice! The body flows much better this time! The expression looks good too! I think your next thing to work on would be limbs, they look a little stiffly posed. Lovely! I'm really enjoying your family portraits. They're charming and full of character, I really like your style. Oh really, that's awesome, I've got some professional animator friends and mad respect for that line of work, it seems absurdly hard to draw so much consistently and quickly and with such flexible understanding of pose and action. I'm a painter, but yeah, got a lot I want to improve on too! This is the year mate. You got your animation up anywhere? Would love to look anywhere it.

I know what you're thinking, and no, lol.
pic is some of the stuff i've done for the drawthread, basically just human + female

maybe no more blushes on my drawings then.
also thanks! trying to get better with values and form since I've almost exclusively cel-shaded since I started digital art. still not great tho

Here's Charmander. Does anyone know any good techniques for coming up with some more original/dynamic poses?
>>
>>37381529
How about you don’t give charmander neck cancer first. Technique with coming up with original dynamic pose? Really just look at other artists, study emotion and body language, go from there. The coloring is spot on though.
>>

Ayy original spikey charmander! Your linework and overall proportions are good but yeah you could do with brushing up anatomy and oses. Would suggest a site called line of action for that, free practice tool for anatomy and dynamic poses. Would recommend lesson mode, you can just set it for however long you want to practice for. I've found it so useful for getting a better grip on anatomy and poses.
>>
Actually just gonna go full shill, here's a link https://line-of-action.com
Would recommend to anyone in this thread who wants to practice anatomy and poses
>>

oh yeah totally, that's why i verge more on the storyboarding/production side of things.
though i only graduated last summer, so i've not really had the chance to work in the industry yet (shit's competitive)

uhh, well i guess it's ok if i've been asked to shill.
so I have my animations on my site here:
https://kassian17.wixsite.com/cyanimation
but i post my artwork on instagram most of the time.

hope you like it.

Just finished my Charmeleon and this is the one I'm most happy with so far. I did some posing practice on line of action so I think I got the proportions a bit better this time round.

Oh, nice stuff dude! Made an account to follow you. Youll have no problem getting work, never been a better time for young webgen animators. Some of the professional ones I follow are absurdly young. Where do you want to end up with your work?
>>37382205
Oh hell yeah man, that's tonnes better! Body feels nice and heavy and weighty. I'm well chuffed at the difference between some first and second draws in this thread, great work. I think next you should do some shading studies, take a close look at the light in the old sugimori art, it's very loose but used very purposefully. At the mo some of your lighting seems a little random, like the bit along the bottom of the jaws and neck. Your overall effect is good so you obviously have an idea of light direction and stuff, but could do with studying how the lighting wraps around objects to create the impression of solid shape and depth. Really great work though, this is a huge step up from the charmander and is really well drawn!
>>
>>37381502
Haha I'm ging the opposite way, trying to learn to effectively cel shade after dping realistic work exclusively. That stuff is all yours? Really nice work man, it looks like you're super flexible with drawing style, that last one is fab, could be official

There's something about this that's really compelling. Love how the tail lays. Great job, anon.

Oh nice! Yeah I think your charmeleon is your best so far but that's not bad. Again you've got the flow of the body down nice. I think you have an issue with the wings and tail and how they intersect, the way they are now the tail is going straight back and should be behind the wings, or else should be curving forward at the base if you want it in front of them. Making solid anatomy progress, keep it up!
(Working on my squirtle now)

Oh dang more draws
>>37383291
Haha it's still pretty sexy faced even without the blushing. The flower looks lovely, I love the sharp contrasted shading and that little splash of pink on the shine. I'm not sure about the placement of the feet, I feel like our right foot /leg is too extended for the angle of the body, if that makes sense, like it should be more hidden by the tummy at this angle? Or bent with the knee raised rather than extended straight maybe. Those are some pretty intense eyes!
>>37383316
Hell yeah man scenes take dedication! It's actually not bad, and will look proper decent if you work on having smooth distinct outlines. Lol at the little sexy pose dude. Please do more!
