-Complete lack of a traditional MGS narrative (the intro chapter was cool as hell though)
-Big Bossu barely spoke / didn't act like a human being
-Fun, tactical gameplay, but the world felt stale and the missions got repetitive fast.

Kojima completely shit the bed as company VP and V would be just as terrible if they gave him all the time and money in the world. Every MGS game after 3 is shit, except Rising, which is pretty good

Unironically the absence of David Hayter.

it would be 100x better if the game was linear like mgs1 and had indoor areas a la shadow moses island. It was too ambitious without a focus

This. In my opinion stealth works best as a kind of puzzle game, with set environments and multiple ways of "solving" it. MGS1&2 did this best. MGS3 was good but the open areas made it a bit less satisfying, but you felt so in control and the story was good enough that it was easy to overlook.

MGS4 was a worm simulator but the presentation and feeling that it was the end of an era made most peoples' first playthrough still exhilarating.

MGS5 was an aimless mess -- it was a toybox but nothing but an empty lot to play in. Sure, some people can still make their own fun -- and more power to them -- but players of the series have come to expect a curated, well crafted experience which MGS5 did not have.

The absolute lack of a story or characterization meant the game had no means of covering up its shortcomings like MGS3&4 had.

>90% of the cutscenes were shown in the trailers, and with better presentation than in the actual game
>Story is fucking bland
>Characters are mostly uninteresting. Only good character in the game is Kaz
>Mute main character.
>Tapes have practically no charm compared to Codec
>Open world is too samey, too many outposts, too little tight bases with actual level design. Absolutely no in-doors sneaking.
>Having to wait for upgrades. And the ridiculous material requirements for most of the high-level upgrades
>Outright cut content they felt they needed to show you about instead of just not showing it
I think those cover the biggest faults of the game. It didn't need to be so underwhelming, I think just about everything that they could fuck up, they did. The engine, the setting, the core gameplay, it's all solid, but they failed to build on top of it.

It didn't help that Kojima was fucking around with Del Toro and his hollywood buddies when he should have been fucking focusing on MGS V.

Mark of the ninja is also linear, and has puzzle elements which is pretty kino. I think claustrophobic environments are almost necessary for stealth kino, otherwise you can just run away and come back later

I liked it, I wish the boss fights were more traditional MGS ones and the game had a better conclusion though.

While I still have that Phantom Pain. At least we got some fun shit out of it. Playing those first 30 hours were precious and amazing. Hell, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it til the final cut scene and the credits rolled. It was only after that the pain kicked in. Then came the reports that we got half a game and that shit tons of content got cut.

It would have been nice to get the full game, but maybe its for the best. We're finally getting a new story from Kojima after all these decades of him wanting to leave MGS alone.

what confuses me is that this would be a guaranteed profit, I don't mind not getting a remastered MGS 3, I'm just confused on why they wouldn't create something they literally can't lose out on.

honestly i feel the same as you
i enjoyed phantom pain, yeah it wasn't as high up there in my own personal opinion as the other MG games but MG games range from excellent to very fucking good to me.
it was like getting a really good game and complaining that it wasn't better.

what killed me on it was, the lack of replayability. those bonus missions felt like homework, and most simply were not fun.

the game had some highs some lows but all in all it was a good game, taking off my nostalgia goggles i could even say it's problaly in the middle of the pack.

the AFTERMATH of learning about the cut content and that the game was unfinished(it felt that way im not gonna lie) really made me feel bitter about it.

now looking back at it and not playing it for months, i can say i fondly remember my time playing it. it was a good game, should have been better.

it was intentional devastation; the final twist of the knife by Kojima into the heart of the MGS fanbase that betrayed him, and the funny thing is that they consider it a perfect game

"TRAITOR!" - Kojima (MGS4 to the player)
"betray your audience" - Kojima

when will they learn...
>>
>>462304098
Yes, and Konami basically has a monopoly over them because they were one of the first to start and have loads of corporate clients, and now they own huge buildings where they can just toss in massive swimming pools and tennis courts and so on which other clubs don't have.

It was literally TOO subtle, which the MGS fanbase is not used to at all, they're used to 5 hours of exposition per game about the events happening

They expected a cutscene to specifically say
>"KAZ IS THE TRAITOR OH MY GOODNESS IT WAS KAZ AND NOT HUEY"

or

>"WOW VENOM SNAKE MAY BE HALLUCINATING SOME OF THESE CUTSCENES JUST LIKE THE PAZ ONE"

the story is unironically too smart for /v/. Gameplay was held back by last gen though
>>
Who had the bright idea of Quiet's entire character design and the female skull snipers' character design? Who added the cut-scenes literally zooming into their breasts and ass while making the woosh sound effect? It was interesting in MGS3 where Eva was actually manipulating you and used her body to steal the film from you at the end, but in MGSV? Is the design team a bunch of 12 year old virgins?

Great game, at today's price point.. nobody should not have it.

Yes its flawed, the hours you can sink into it, if you do side OPs and objectives make it feel repetitive sometimes..

But overall it's still enjoyable and the grinding is nothing new to any of us.

The story that was there in Chapter 1 was fucking great, I don't disagree. I feel like they missed the mark with Skullface though, particularly the jeep scene was very painful and could have been presented in a better way.

Chapter 2 shits the bed as the climax is poorly executed and scenes come randomly with very little in the way of events leading up to it.
