>the majority opinion on /v/ is very anti movie games>majority opinion also likes the Yakuza games>they're one of the most egregious movie-game titles out therewhat gives?
How is Yakuza a movie game? It's long segments of pure gameplay broken up by long sections of story. "Movie games" are usually what people call games that integrate constant cinematics into every aspect of the game like Uncharted.
>>441891328end of thread. /v/ likes metal gear games too. it's all about execution.
It’s okay when japan does it
>>441890779because games like Red Dead and The Last of Us force you to walk and listen to exposition in a way that might as well be a cutscene so it's got cutcenes + "interactive" cutscenes.
>>441891652God I hate that shit. Just give me a cutscene so I can put down the controller since I'm not actually doing anything anyway,
A movie game is a game that takes control out of a player's hands and is purposefully full of moments you'd rather not go through again because they are just pushing the controller forward to hide the load screens.
>>441891328>>441892010Yakuza has a bunch of "Hold Right trigger to follow character as they talk at you" moments though.
>>441890779Cause there's long bouts of gameplay between cutscenes. It's pretty clear when it's movie time and when it's head smashing time.
>>441892213there were legit 1 or 2 of those in yakuza 0
I just got Yakuza Zero for my birthday and I really want to talk about it but I'm really afraid of spoilers.
>>441892571You are right to be afraid. Just take your time and finish it.
>>441892213I think there was a handful in Yakuza 0 and even then it's just so the two people talk for a bit. Other times you can just sprint right to wherever you're going.
>>441890779Because despite being a legitamitly cinematic experience between gameplay segments, Yakuza still manages to be more of a traditional video game than most games out there when it isn't playing out the narrative.
>>441890779>buy yakuza 0 on steam because of the amount of love it gets on here>the first 2 hours are cutscenes and barely interactive gameplayI stuck with it and enjoyed the game once I got to play it but I was genuinely surprised at how long I had to wait.
>>441892571Beat it first. Trust me you’ll regret if you read spoilers or anything on this. You only get to play through it the first time once. I can count on one hand games that I’m glad I avoided spoilers and played through blind.
>movie game has movie gameplay>I sleep>move game has good gameplay>AWAKEN
Yakuza 6 has an HOUR LONG INTRO with no gameplay.Could you imagine the posts on /v/ if a western game did that?
>/v/ is one person
Tell me about the MJ/Spielberg/zombie mission, Anon. Did you laugh?
>>441891652>exposition starts while riding towards destination>arrive there before they finish telling the story and it's just cut shortWorst of both worlds
>>441893801What does this prove? This is literally 9 posts over the course of 8 months. And it's true, Yakuza 6 does have an hour long intro. There you go Anon, another post for your archive.
>>441890779Do you have a problem with that you fun-hating n i g g e r?
>>441893115>>move game has good gameplayAre you implying the jankfest that is the Yakuza series has good gameplay?
>>441890779/v/ loves movie games when they're JapaneseAlso Yakuza has actual gameplay in there too in spades, even if it is all pretty bad
>>441893435See >>441893115>>441894404It's better than 95% of western games
>>441891503Metal Gear Solid sucks though. You were teenagers when they first came out, which is why you liked them.
>>441894178prove's that you're obsessed with something you don't like, and should probably try to move on.this will be my last reply to you so don't even bother responding.
>>441894513>It's better than 95% of western gamesAnd? It's still not good.
>game has hour long intro wtfWhy, you gotta be somewhere? Imagine complaining about knowing what you're in for.
>>441893435Yeah and Yakuza 6 is one of the most hated entries in the franchise.
>yakuza has good gameplayisn't it just a bunch of minigames?
>>441894737It's good, but not great.
Yakuza>Play golf>Cards>Arcade games>FightWestern movie games>Press X to SHAUWN!!!!!!Any questions?
>>441894798Only 5 really forces you to go through a bunch of retarded minigames. The rest have them but the majority are completely optional.
>>441894798No, it's a bunch of street fights with "Press Triangle to Awesome" cutscenes.
>>441894913nah, they've been forcing you through a lot of these minigames since 4 at the earliest, and have continued to do so with 5, 0, 6, K2, etc
>>441890779>/v/ is one personMost people here haven't played Yakuza or even heard of it.
The answer is simple. /v/ isn't anti-movie games. /v/ is just contrarian because it allows people on /v/ to feel smarter and more refined in their opinions than they really are. Most movie games are popular and well received, so /v/ must hate them. Yakuza is not popular in the west and most people in the west don't understand the Yakuza games at first glance, so /v/ must like them because it makes them feel superior to do so.But they aren't superior because they are ruled by their desire to go against what is popular. They don't like Yakuza because its good. They like Yakuza because their thought process is as simple as "Popular bad, upopular good!"
>>441895151I know 3 forced you to do some golfing and 6 had Haruto but what did 4 force you through? Been forever since I played that one and don't remember having to do anything. Haven't played K2 so can't comment on that. 5 is the only one that sticks out to me where you HAVE to do a ton of the minigames at least once to progress the main story.
>>441891328T. Easymode player
>>441890779God please help me
>>441895363forces you to try out stuff like the hostess creator and, the saejima dojo thing.there might be more but i remember them sticking out the most, and i haven't played 4 in ages and am waiting for the PS4 port to replay it.
>>441895363Funny enough 6 only forced you to do the cheer up Haruto minigame maybe a handful of times in under a half hour and then never again for the rest of the game. Probably the only time I was puzzled about laborious minigame not popping up for me through the remainder of the game when usually it's the opposite and dreading it.

>>441895853This is hakura one, for the ex rank
>game has cutscenespffft no thanks, I don't play movie games.Tetris, Solitaire and RimWorld for me friendos.
>>441892213Not the same, you can skip them by running ahead to the destination. Those segments are only used at the beginning for characterization then never again. Comparing it to the "over the shoulder walk and provide exposition between setpieces that happens every 15m minimum" is disingenuous
>>441893435goddamn is this true
>/v/ constantly talks about how it hates western movie games and how japanese games are superior because they don't try to be cinematic>Shenmue pioneered and popularized quick-time events>Ico pioneered and popularized escort missions>WinBack & Kill Switch pioneered and popularized cover-based shooting>Metal Gear Solid pioneered and popularized 'movie games' with a heavy emphasis on cinematic storytelling to the detriment of gameplay (just compare MGS to its stealth game contemporaries like Thief and it becomes painfully clear how primitive its 'stealth' mechanics and level design are by comparison)>Resident Evil 4 pioneered and popularized the tight over the shoulder camera where your character takes up half the screen, necessitating a much slower movement speed and pace of gameplay, in contrast to older third-person games where the camera was zoomed out and both player and enemy moved very fast.>Final Fantasy and other popular jrpgs removed classic rpg features like extensive character creation and customization and non-linearity in favor of a more guided, linear experience filled with cinematic spectacle.Really makes you think.
>>441895725You can make like 14ish mistakes and still get a 950. As long as you get past that one dumb bit about 2/3rds of the way in where they spam you with notes that are completely off-beat you should be fine. Then you only have to hate Haruka for the pool part.
>>441896450oh so he's retarded
>>441896681Absolutely fucking based

>>441896705The pool came before this retarded badly designed karaoke shit and it wasn’t so bad.Maybe because I actually enjoyed playing pool and this interjection thing makes no sense at all.Goddamn I’m never trying post game sidequests on yakuzas ever again
>>441890779The sad truth is, the bestadvice is terrible. Play moar videogames. You're drunk
>>441896681>>Resident Evil 4 pioneered and popularized the tight over the shoulder camera where your character takes up half the screen, necessitating a much slower movement speed and pace of gameplay, in contrast to older third-person games where the camera was zoomed out and both player and enemy moved very fast.Goddamn it...it's because of that I miss the pre-rendered fixed camera of Resident Evils prior to 4.
>>441897216>l and this interjection thing makes no sense at all. What's not to get? Just choose Lively Interjection for the hard mode and then hit the notes. The only recommendation I can give you with keeping on beat is that with Otometal specifically there's portions where it goes off beat and you need to be good at keeping up with it, but the rest of it is 100% on beat to the singing itself so as long as you listen to what you can you'll eventually hear it. Thankfully it's the only hard karaoke song in the series barring Ishin's stuff but that's just because Ishin's calligraphy brush is slightly off from where the hits actually count from. Hands from 6 too if you want to count that but that's mainly just because it's like three and a half minutes long.
>>441891503At least in metal gear, you can skip the cutscenes and codecs and just play the game while others will always have the lame walk and talk segments that last forever.
>>441897673Just got another 940And no, it’s completely offbeat with the rhythm. Especially the parts where it speeds up for no reason
>>441896658Yes. If it wasn't every yakuza fan would be denying it.
>>441898083When Kiryu does the scream that's all off beat, when you start hearing Haruka singing in the background after that it's on beat for most of that portion, then when it goes back to Kiryu it's a mix of on and off again, and then it'll swap around until the part you mentioned, yeah. There's definitely a "beat" so to speak for the notes at certain points you just need to find it, that's how I did it at least.
>>441890779>before Yakuza 0>comfy threads on /v/ every couple of weeks with almost zero shitposts>after Yakuza 0>bait and shitposting central threads every hourWhy did this happen, bros. At least we have western releases for every game without waiting retarded amounts of time.

>>441900232Every Yakuza fan here knows that if the exact same gameplay and amount of cutscenes were in a western release it would become the biggest joke on /v/This is why they get so defensive and touchy. And the best part is it's not even trolling, shitposting or being disingenuous. It's true, and everyone knows it. The only reason people keep saying it here is because the denials keep happening. Nobody denies MGS is a movie game. So nobody bothers arguing about it. But Yakuza fans get mad as fuck for some reason and keep perpetuating these threads. They should start saying "this is how you do those kind of games RIGHT" or whatever rather than being so autistic
>>441900459He's so weak though and they want to push you towards using weapons when weapons are so annoying to maintain even with the repair kits added in 5. He's usable, yeah, but My Meteor Tackle is outright unusable thanks to it functioning like a grab which means all bosses can just throw you out of it and it deals grab damage as well while consuming an entire Heat bar, he's got short combos, and his Heat Actions leave much to be desired on the damage front. The 100 man challenge alone should show you all his shortcomings during combat. His story is great though and his side characters are top notch, Takasugi is the best.>>441900831At least you got it. Congratulations man.
>>441901440I only played the first, I think the difference is the deep plot and the amount of characters and their roles in the story and so on. If a western game did it, like let's say red dead or GTA, you would just want to skip it. In Yakuza, I was very interested in what was going to happen next and wanted to pay attention. Just my opinion.
>>441901708Shinada has awesome grabs m8 I honestly barely used weapons with him. Akiyama was the one I found to be the worst to play as which is a shame because he was my favorite in 4.
>>441890779The main campaign is mostly movie BUT all of the side content / substories are pure GAME baby.
>>441901440What?It's cutscene heavy but it's not really a movie game, most of the time you're controlling your character.
>>441902074>Shinada has awesome grabs m8His normal grabs are fine and being able to punch into them (If I remember right) is fine as well, it's just that his character-specific gimmick of My Meteor Tackle can't be used outside of mooks since as soon as you try it on a boss you'll immediately get thrown after half a second because it's a grab and waste a bar of Heat. Daigo's fight can show you that for instance while normal grabs can at least be mashed to throw bosses when you grab them. Plus his damage is lower than anyone else's making fights much longer and he doesn't have much in the way of multiple enemy Heat Actions. He's alright to use it's just that you have to heavily adjust to his playstyle.>AkiyamaDefinitely rougher due to everyone's favorite Heat Action but I found him as good as 4's if not better due to the juggling and those Heat Actions from the juggling themselves, plus he felt even faster than before, but he's so much more paper-thin when it comes to defense compared to Shinada who can tank as well as Saejima for the most part despite the tiny HP bar. If they just got rid of that dumb Heat Action or at least made the requirement like in Judge Eyes (Where the guy needs to be stunned) then Akiyama would have been so much better.
>>441890779i like the minigames and the fact i can just walk away from the movie game and play some awesome minigames and cheesy af side stories. pacing is everything. and letting me practically control the pace of the entire game is huge. it's probably why I originally liked Bethesda games so much (not anymore cuz the gameplay is shit and Yakuza's simple gameplay and combat destroys anything Beth has ever created or will create).
>>441892213Only in the Kiwami remakes, and that's because they're replacing sections that in the were largely text based scenes in the originals.
>>441902386And the same goes for practically every western game /v/ shits on. You only further prove my point. The only game I can think of that might be more cutscene than gameplay is The Order 1886
>>441901927>deep plot and the amount of characters and their roles in the storyYou should definitely play every single Yakuza game and then enjoy the payoff at the end :^)It's so great seeing all that deep plot and all those plotlines come together :^)
>>441903680>You only further prove my point. What point? You shouldn't care about what /v/ thinks, it's a bunch of angry young men, all they care about is hating popular games and deluding themselves into thinking their superior intelligence gives them superior taste in games.
Well fuck since we are hereHow hype are you guys for Judge Eye
>>441904136not at all until they announce it's coming for PC.looks fucking awesome though except for the tailing side missions, i always hated those in any game
>>441890779It's still very "gamey", like some journos say. "Movie games" are those that integrate the cutscenes into gameplay, which is what makes people mad (because they can't skip it).Story in games is fine, if you know how to tell it.
>>441890779I played 0 and I was really disappointed. The long beat'em up segments are great when they happen, but most of the game is, admittedly entertaining, movie stuff and all the stupid minigames.
>>441903846Lol, sorry to ask, but are you being sarcastic? I barely have time for games these days and do plan on playing them. The plan was to buy Kiwami2, but I was bummed out they took scenes out. Like the crossdresser hooker scene. I saw it on youtube after reading about it and laughed pretty good. I like that kind of comedy. Now I wonder what else they removed and if I'm better off playing on the emulator. Instead of adding content, content was cut. I have kiwami 1 but haven't played it yet. I probably would realize if anything was cut since I haven't played since the original was released.
>>441904126You prove my point by giving a free pass to Yakuza for something that also applies to the vast majority of games /v/ dismisses as being "movies"You say Yakuza isn't a movie game because you control your character more than you watch cutscenes. That applies to just about every movie game /v/ complains about too.
>>441904136Demo was fun but I'm sad karaoke is dead. Really wanted to play the drone racing in it but for some reason it's locked to the full game even though you can buy bits and bobs for it. >>441904607>are you being sarcastic? No way Anon, ask anyone on /v/. You should play every single Yakuza game so you get to see the great ending in 6. >>441890779People liked asura's wrath too.You tell me.Least Yakuza's more gamey and has content that isn't you sitting through hours of cutscenes with small and weak gameplay spliced into it (ie, side missions and sandbox events)

I'm playing Yakuza for the first time and it's kinda boring to be honest.I started with excitement but the most I played it the more shallow it got. It's just a collection of minigames you have to get through free-roaming with mediocre brawling in the middle and a not that interesting story

If you're on the older games it goes from top to bottom and back again over and over. You also have a slight leniency for notes at the exact start of the next line of like a quarter of a second. Always do Lively Interjections unless you've honestly never played a rhythm game before since they're barely that much harder than the base difficulty of song. Eventually the line itself will become a blur to you and you'll kind of just learn when to press the buttons just from seeing the line in your general view. I always look a bit ahead (Like maybe three or four lines-worth ahead) personally.Remember that the game is incredibly lenient with how much you can fail, I think a 900 on Lively is like 15-20ish mistakes out of a couple hundred notes and some songs get even more lenient.
>>441905987at least it's a decent japan simulator
>>441905941>I don't care for anything else. The side-missions are specially dullProbably just not the series for you then, side content is usually one of the draws. Substories in 5 were kinda hit or miss (Kiryu and Saejima both have some good ones with Shinada having some okay ones), Side Missions are easy but they're really up to you if you enjoy them or not. Racing has rubberbanding issues, hunting introduces several mechanics that are pretty pointless and the main story stresses them for no particular reason, jobs are basically just the same minigames on repeat, and baseball is really easy due to the bats and gloves you can buy but it's more about the story of it.Keep on with it and see if you still enjoy the story side of things. The side content like substories, minigames, and side missions are basically your breather from the main story to have fun with at your own pace.
It's japan so it's automatically good.
