they wanted to reboot the whole franchise and cut off the OT/prequels because apparently George still has some kind of ownership of those characters

>“Rian was not just randomly writing a story nor was JJ. JJ’s job was to create a in canon reboot like the 2009 movie and introduce the new characters. Rian’s job was to kill off the originals and then you were suppose to not notice it was rebooted. Each was given the outline to make it and what the points were. So now you know why. Disney did not want to pay a license fee and by end of it all looked different and was a new copyright under the old name. They even changed the Falcon to be different. But the orders was in the end to leave nothing original.”

>“There is this just quick. There was always one plan. After the reaction to The Last Jedi, the decision was made to bring in J.J. to fix the plan he laid out and they threw Rian under the bus. This is why they said Rian might get his own trilogy. They just didn’t expect the backlash to be as toxic as it was and consequently Solo flopped.”

This kind of defeats the point, though. If Disney had wanted to kill off all the Lucas characters and soft reboot, why did they make a movie about Han Solo, a Lucas character?

>How is this franchise still making a lot of money?

Star Wars used to make most of its bank through the merch sales. Toys, video games, bedsheets, oranges, paper cups, etc. But merch sales have plummeted, which is what is REALLY putting the franchise in a financial bind. The movies are just advertisements for the merch; their cost has already been written off. But if the merch doesn't sell, then there's trouble.

>Needing two bad movies to reboot your franchise.
>Needing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars and years of marketing, merchandising, press, and coverage just to reach the point where you can start from scratch.

No one is that stupid. No one needs two huge, billion-dollar blockbuster productions just to get to the beginning of a new franchise model. That's entirely post-hoc rationalization.

We know JJ killed Han because fucking Ford wanted Han to die and because as an old dude with no skills to pass on (since Rey was written as an ace pilot and fighter from the start), he was of no value to the series going forward, and really only valuable in the emotional weight of his death.

It was Rian that decided to wipe everything clean and start again, though it's clear he wanted to wipe the "lore" slate clean but continue on with Leia in the mix because she's a woman and "The Force is Female" or whatever the fuck. But that gamble failed when she died and he ended up left with a franchise that by it's own hand had cut all ties with the one before it.

Any rationalization now is because Disney is sort of left with this shit, unmarketable franchise and new characters no one likes, with all the old characters dead and gone, and they have to justify why they're continuing at all.
>>
>>119530746
But this would mean it would be Bob Iger's fault, not Kathleen's, and people like to blame Kathleen.
>>
>>119530808
>Bullshit, they didn't have to keep Luke and the old gang for 7

Yes they did.

We're seeing this era of what's not called "soft reboots" for a reason, it's perfect marketing. Having the old characters, aesthetic, music, and etc gives the reboots a layer of perceived legitimacy and allows the creators to try to use the old characters to pass the torch and hand off the franchise to the new characters to make more money eternally.

People went to see Force Awakens in the millions because in the trailers they saw Han Solo, they saw Leia, they saw Chewbacca, they saw Stormtroopers, they saw basically a new Death Star, they saw Star Destroyers, they heard the classic music and sounds. For the first time in forty years it felt like there was a new Star Wars movie to the masses after the prequels soured in the public mind. This never would have happened if they didn't use those characters.

They didn't bring back Han, Leia, and Luke to "get the band back together!" They did it as a cynical cash-maximizing ploy to trick the masses into thinking that the new endless Star Wars movies that Disney can churn out now with the property are authentic because they brought back your beloved original characters and ran them through the mud. Surprisingly though, people aren't stupid enough to all be fooled by this and they noticed pretty easily, so a lot of people have turned on the sequels now. The older fans that Disney so loathed have all turned their backs, and there are no younger fans, because kids don't give a fuck about Star Wars anymore.
>>
>>119531860
It's a lazy blog-writer's trick of shaping your opinion on a topic before you read the actual content, or allowing you to feel like you got the message even if you don't bother to read past the headline.

Essentially the way clickbait blog writing goes is
>Pick a topic and create a vapid, outlandish, offensive, or insulting headline designed to snap reader's attention and get them instantly engaged either by baiting their rage or making them think you're a fucking idiot.
>Then tag on your opinion on the topic. Tell them that it's a good thing, or that it's a bad thing, or whatever else you're going to write in the article.
>Now, it doesn't matter what the article says and you can be as trashy, retarded, or nonsensical as you want. They already know your idea and they are either on board, or angry and sharing it out of anger.

"And that's a good thing." works best when paired with something everyone should hate, or have good reason to be angered by. But the title needs to assure them that their emotion is unjustified and they just need to calmly accept what you're telling them.

It's barely doing it anymore. After TFA and RO, they royally fucked themselves with TLJ which practically killed their Disney universe.
>biggest 1st-2nd week box office drop off
>TLJ underperforming (expected to make $1.9B; made $1.3B instead)
>Kathleen, JJ, and Rian are responsible for this trilogy sucking
>Battlefront II EA Edition underselling
>Solo bombed, leading to Disney reconsidering the development of more spin offs that no one asked for
>merchandise rotting on store shelves

>Lucasfilm employees still blame and berate the fans
>comic book sales have dropped immensely
>novel sales have dropped immensely
>"progressive" hedonistic perversions keep creeping in on the established character lore
>Galaxy's Edge failed and may get rebranded
>no one with a fully developed brain actually cares about Rey, Poe, Finn, Rose, Holdo, BB-8, or any of the "original" aliens that share the same horseface template meant to replace Lucas' races from Episodes 1 - 6
>constant pursuit of appealing to feminazis
>lost $180M in 2018
>reported another major loss this year as a combination of Fox's recent flops and the Star Wars theme park failing
>rumors escalating that they're planning to remake the Original Trilogy
>nu-EU material is overwhelmingly shitty, more so than the old EU
>part of the reason they're killing off the OT content is just so that they don't pay off royalties to Lucas, essentially remaking the franchise to be their own thing
>things have gotten so bad that even the shill access media is now admitting that they're having doubts in Disney Star Wars, even predicting that TRoS won't do too well at the box office
At this point, Star Wars is destined to die off as long as Disney controls it. Either 1 of 2 things should happen:
1.) They should just give it a mercy killing and bury it.
2.) Lucas miraculously buys it back, which will never happen.

I hate the new Star Wars as much as anyone, but this thread is pure autism. What happened to Star Wars isn't some elite conspiracy, it's exactly what happens everytime a big corporation takes an interest in their movies. They start doing storytelling by committee, start trying to appeal to whatever they think will up their profit margins, and are generally incompetent.

It's not a feminist conspiracy or a globalist conspiracy or whatever. It's just a bunch of incompetent people propelled by their own wealth to a level of creative control they don't deserve telling a story badly.

>I honestly can't believe there was any plans in place...

There weren't. JJ Abram's did a TED Talk about his storytelling philosophy, "The Mystery Box". The gist is that you don't have to have a plan,y ou don't have to have answers, you don't have to have substance. Audiences don't care about any of that. All they care about is "what's in the box?" So long as you never tell them what's in there, they'll stay hooked. And if you never tell them, then it doesn't matter if the box is empty or not, because they'll never know.

If the merch theory is true, and it fits really well, that means that J.J. deliberatly made a worse movie to earn pennies on the merchandise.

So basically the same thing he did with LOST, he wants to do with Star Wars.
>>
>>119530810
Well Disney has not made a profit on the Star Wars acquisition yet, so it's not. Remember, they have to make 4 billion dollars of new money just to simply break even AKA fail horribly. This will go down as one of the largest corporate flops in history.

Even if they did profit on it eventually, if it took way more work to get that profit than just dumping the 4 billion into a hedge fund, then once again, its a failure.

>Any rationalization now is because Disney is sort of left with this shit, unmarketable franchise and new characters no one likes, with all the old characters dead and gone, and they have to justify why they're continuing at all.
There's a 30 year gap in between RotJ and TFA. It might have been filled in with new books; I don't know as I haven't watched any of the new movies or read any of the new books. They could easily cast three young actors as Han, Luke, and Leia, like they did for young Han in the Han Solo movie, and have movies that explain what happened after RotJ with characters the viewers like.
>>
I was initially fine with Disney buying Star Wars, if they didn't treat it like a money printer and shat it up.
I was unsurprisingly in for a rude awakening as that's exactly what happened with TLJ and Solo. No character arcs were expanded upon, nothing of real substance or story progression.
Snoke was a very interesting plot character as he, as shown in the films, can manipulate the force from light years away. When Rian just took him out with one quick slash that's when I realized something fucky was going on.
And with Palpatine now allegedly being resurrected it's just another ploy at cashing in on nostalgia.

This. It is so fucking tedious how they treat Star Wars. RJ literally gave interviews saying 'I want to make a divisive movie', and Disney let him, because "People will still see it, it is Star Wars".

Bob Iger said to investors "We are not spending money on advertising Galaxies Edge, we can just send a tweet saying 'It's open', and it will be full for months".

Fuck that attitude. Galaxies Edge is an awful product. It is one ride, with fucking super expensive shops no fucker can afford to go to after paying the ticket prices.

At least Solo bombing has put them on the back foot, and let them realize that the name Star Wars on it does not give them a licence to do what they like. Galaxy of Adventures was such a massive improvement over Forces of Destiny that it isn't even funny.

10.2B
4B invested would yield roughly 2.2B in profit for a total of 6.2B after 10 years. They spent 4B, meaning unless Star Wars brings in 10.2B over 10 years, they'll have less money than if they had just done nothing. That said, there are non monetary benefits to the buyout. They deny the IP to their competitors, and they can use it to push social changes and propaganda.

Second, no blaster bolt is going to puncture a window pane. I remember reading EU books stating many are made with "transparisteel", so that could explain why there may have been one situation out of the six movies where glass has been shot at and broken after numerous shots.
I think the fair criticism is why Obi-Wan didn't pursue Jango Fett immediately after shooting the hired assassin. The answer was a plot contrivance so as to cover the tracks of the separatist conspiracy, it could have been handled better, though I did like how Dooku probably killed off Syfo-Dias and buried his plans of a republic army and having an ace in the hole in case it was discovered.

Their whole plan from the start was "fuck the loyal fans, they'll watch whatever, let's go all woke and try to attract a new audience as well." The problem is they failed to keep the fans and failed to attract a new audience. People don't love Star Wars any more. At the best, they'll go see the last one out of obligation, just to see how it ends (I won't, fuck that shit). You can see this in how their merchandise doesn't sell any more and their theme park venture flopped. They should have just continued appeasing the loyal fans, or made something completely new. Instead, they got greedy.

Can you remind me how much screen time Chewie and the droids got in TLJ. Or the droids in TFA. No original character is there longer then they need to be and Leia was the only character they wanted to keep alive because Kathleen didn’t think she was strong in her own trilogy.

Nah. They offered Rian IX and announced his trilogy a month before VIII was released, well before the backlash.
>>
>>119534789
they don't own all of the licenses. 20th century fox owns the licensing rights for selling episode 4.
>>
>>119534993
OK so Disney is required to pay Lucas royalties per trademarked character per minute of screen time? And they still decided to reveal Darth Maul as the baddie at the end of Solo, to reintroduce Palpatine and Lando for ep 9, to make Leia one of the 13 remaining resistance soldiers?

There is no set of 'complicated secret copyright law loophole IP rules' that makes this idea plausible. Occam's razor is that they wanted to retain old fans and attract new ones, while selling as much merchandise of old and new characters as possible.
>>
>>119535088
This.
It was supposed to be a move to establish how confident they were for pre sales.
The fact that it's approaching 2 years and it's had no details but a producer announced is pretty telling, especially since said producer is a generic Disney monkey.

And maybe having people with ties to the stuido bully fans who complained or used proxies like IGN and 2 Scoops Stephen to call us racist/sexist people would not have abandoned the franchise. They even invited that hack to Celbration and open the Episode IX panel. They have no one to blame but themselves
>>
>>119530746
This theory makes no sense at all. If Lucas still had some kind of ownership of the characters and you're using them in any capacity, you have to pay Lucas. So why not give them a proper send off while simultaneously setting up your new characters? It's patently stupid. The original heroes, aside from Chewie and the droids, would be too old to hang around long anyway. And everyone knew Ford wanted out. Fisher wouldn't last long, we knew that even before 7 came out, and Hamill, yes, he could play Luke for a while, but clearly they would have to pass the torch and the end of the new trilogy would have been the prime spot to do it.

Even the most brain dead executive could see that poisoning the well is not a winning strategy.

I don't buy it. So much of Disney Star Wars is built around fellating the OT. They made two whole spinoffs that existed just to feed audiences more Death Stars, Han Solos, and Millenium Falcons.
Also, if this is like the Star Trek situation where a character has to be significantly changed in order to be considered uniquely the property of Disney, well age alone has done that to the characters. None of those characters are exactly who they were. They could have gone even further and had Han actually change his clothes and give up his life as a smuggler, but they didn't.
No, I don't buy any of this. They wanted to shift focus to the young cast, which is just the sensible thing to do when writing a followup trilogy like this, and hopefully seeding a future for the franchise. The fuckups in writing come down more to political pandering and general ineptitude.

Because you have no planned answer, whatever you later make can be completely disconnected from both audience expectations and the movie itself. >It's at best setting people up for disappointment. Because you have no planned answer,

JJ Abram's "mystery box" technique is about making promises, not keeping them. You promise the audience that something is in the box and keep promising that it will be revealed. But nothing is in the box. You stretch it out for as many seasons or sequels as you can get and squeeze as much profit from that audience as you can. Then when it's over, you just throw something you made up on the spot out as the answer.

At that point, it doesn't matter if the audience is satisfied or not. The series is already over and you already got every penny from them you were going to get. JJ's mistake was in leaving Star Wars after 1 movie instead of sticking around for 3. As a result, Rian Johnson dropped the box and showed everyone there was nothing inside too early.

Why buy the franchise if you want to just wipe the slate clean and start a new story?

It's obviously because they had some sort of agenda they wanted to push, and decided to push it in the context of star wars- ie the subconscious ideology that they're pushing isn't popular, and they're afriad that it would be utterly rejected and flop, if they didn't package it in Star Wars instead of a completely new space opera setting they completely owned the rights to.

Compare and contrast the originals and prequels to the followup movies. The whole vibe is completely different; I doubt most people can explain it in conscious terms- they just say that the new films suck..... but ironically, they're just trusting their feelings; something is amiss in the franchise.

>What's the poison pill they're using SWs to push and make easier to swallow?

There literally isn't anything else in the field; except Star Trek- and yet somehow Disney still managed to screw it up completely. Why?

When you look at it, the rumor about Disney wanting to reboot Star Wars for the sake of not paying license fees becomes increasingly more true. Everything within the Disney continuity is essentially rentals and replacements of preexisting material, but with a Far-Leftist vibe added to everything in order to make it "different". It's essentially cultural revisionism ala Communism masking itself as Capitalism, but the sane fans that are left are seeing through the bullshit, hence the plummeting revenue, project cancellations, and declining general interest in the IP.

And now JJ has to actually conclude the series.

Historically a lot of communist movements were very isolationist and strongly nationalist, like the ones led by Enver Hoxha and Thomas Sankara, both of whom modernized their backwater shitholes while emphatically refusing all foreign aid. You don't hear about them because they don't fit the American mainstream narrative of "communism means evil toothbrush stealers" or even the modern left's narrative of "communism means the Soviet Union giving me millions to write slam poetry about the plight of black trans otherkin immigrants."

I could come up with a list of problems with the movie, and how they could have and should have been easily fixed; but what's the point?

My dislike for the last fiasco of a starwars movie is such that I can't even remember it's name half the time. I know it was in the SW universe, but somehow it didn't even feel like a Star Wars movie. I'm surprised I even took the time to say that I don't want to take the time to talk or think about it anymore; which is really sad, because I loved Star Wars when I was a kid. And, if the conspiracy theorists are right, it's even worse then I thought- and that some people went out of there way to deliberately make the best "worst" starwars movie they possibly could- simply because they wanted to destory that love and adoration people had for the franchise.

this.

All they use to do was say, "Please give our movie a shot, we worked very hard. please wait till you see the finished product"

Which is a great high road answer. Ever since ghostbusters filmmakers and producers have been alienating the fans by calling them racist/sexist/virgin manbabies.

He'll probably be dead from diabetes or something by then given how fat he is. Plus, Disney has some of the most powerful lawyers in history, so it's even less likely. One could hope that they realize that their purchase of Star Wars was wasted and they eventually sell it off on their own, similar to what happened to Saban and Power Rangers, but ehhh....

>How the fuck can anyone just insult the fanbase like that and not expect backlash?
This decade has seen some of the most powerfully inept bullshit ever due to the shift in politics and the wider prevalence of the internet that even MGS2 predicted. Insane vocal minorities, particularly from the Left, are gaining more control over society. Stuff you'd usually get fired over nowadays gets you promoted. Stuff that was seen as disgusting back then is now seen as "brave" & "inspirational" today. Criticism is now "harassment." If you fail, you win. These social justice fucks want to bring everyone down to their level by destroying morals and old laws for the sake of making themselves feel more better than their opposition since they view the world as a bleak place, seeing the human body as a temple for their own twisted pleasures.
Thusly, it shouldn't come as a surprise to see these same types of """people"'" in charge of nu-Wars, thinking their immune to all accusations and seeing themselves as impenetrable gods of the industry that can do no wrong.

People always fail to see Hanlon's Razor.
>Kennedy was a glorified secretary and paper pusher for Lucas and Spielberg. Also happens to be a feminist, which is a form of mental illness
>Abrams and Johnson on record saying they weren't really given much of an outline, despite there being a strongk PoC in charge of the story continuity
>Abrams having few tricks up his sleeve other than MYSTERY BOX
>Johnson being a hipster faggot and being on record YOUR SNOKE THEORY SUCKS
They're just incompetent. Kennedy has no vision or creative talent. She hired people based on superficial traits, and their universe story team is filled with nobodies and mediocrity. Abrams is great at packaging some superficial stuff, but he's a one trick pony who is getting long in the tooth. Johnson was in over his head, who should've stuck to smaller budget films for his post modern quirky shit. Everyone below them are just trying to take advantage of an opportunity, and the cast has been hedging their bets since TFA.
Any of this rumor shit is just that, rumors, and ignoring the known facts.
>>
>>119542110
I don't know what to say. I didn't expect to enjoy it.
I hated the obsessively fast pace of TFA, and the absolute NOTHING happening in Rogue One.
TFA had a decent pace, and I liked the idea of a legitimate science fiction problem. Instead of dumb space battles.
Their ship is being tracked, and they have a limited amount of space-warps possible, and they need to find their way to a specific part of the ship, or something. It's been a while, so I don't remember exactly what they did. No where near as good as OT (which I hadn't seen in a long time), and watching the OT shortly afterwards, and realizing all the call-backs annoyed me.

Like the time I watched Home Alone 2 with my family, and then went back tp watch Home Alone 1. All the "oh gawd I'm watching a shitty beat-for-beat sequel" problems except they kicked in on the first movie.
>>
>>119541738
I really think it's two things
1. they were stupid and fell for the hype
1. they realised the film had been made to their specifications, and they couldn't admit they may have been wrong about a few things
>>
>>119542167
>They're just incompetent

Yeah no shit the easiest answer is the truth. They got it on a whim and instead of taking a year to plan shit out they rushed into it making shit up as they went along.

Its obvious they had no idea what they had or what to do with it

That's probably it. They do shit like devote large portions of prequel irrelevant videos on prequel bashing. They have some problems and being unable to admit they're wrong is one of them.
>>
>>119542143
>Disney would probably want 6 or maybe even 8 billion for it.
Maybe Amazon could acquire it. They saved The Expanse. I could see them saving Star Wars, giving it the respect it deserves, and possibly using it as a gateway for bolstering Amazon Studios to compete in Hollywood.
>>
>>119542336
>and they couldn't admit they may have been wrong about a few things

Mike kind of begrudgingly admitted it when he said that JJ shouldn't be writing, but only directing.
>>
>>119542276
The problem is that it's so utterly internally inconsistent that it sabotages itself.
The tracking thing, for example, loses all its edge when you realise that they clearly weren't tracking shuttles coming out of the ship, or monitoring communications.
>>
>>119542470
Yeah, I was surprised to find out the TFA Plinkett review was nearly 50% Lucas jabs and Prequel jabs.
>>
>>119542601
It's ironic. They made a review just as nostalgia-pandering and "remember the past" as TFA was. And like TFA, it was a disjoint, disconnected mess. Someone could probably do a plinkett-style review on their reviews and show how badly those reviews fail as reviews.

>Why they kept her alive especially after the coke queen died in real life i will never understand

>>
>>119542751
More likely that she was the cheapest for a long term contract.
Hamil and Ford can still work, and both get asses in seats when they do.
>>
>>119542550
It's not just the JJ thing. The reviews go to lengths to say how genius the simplicity of the big empire vs small rebels plot of the OT, while criticising the PT for not doing that. Lo and behold, TFA copies that plot, and it's a complete rehash and a failure of worldbuilding.
They said, combat should be weighty, not flashy. TFA fights are weighty, not flashy, and they're really boring.
Pretty sure they also championed the "relatable characters and believable dialogue" idea, which just gave us a cast of the same vaguely sarcastic snarkers we get in every modern movie, completely robbing Star Wars of that operatic feel.

Nah, that was Whedon's fault. It can all be traced back to him, but in his defence it actually worked in most of his material due to the context.

George seemed more interested in the themes of Star Wars than hard lore though. I think he encouraged Dave Filoni to not worry about established lore too much "just do something cool", which is maybe not terrible advice. In the end, there are only a certain number of fans who will even notice when you contradict something that was established in a comic twenty years ago.
