>>117882053The shots, the score, which really elevates the scenes. Even the gore is beautiful against the backdrop. Very sunny, flowery, and brutal at the same time. The vibe, ambience, whatever, all of it is insanely gorgeous. The way you feel by the end of it.

was Dani recruited into the cult? or do they just invite random people and sometimes like what/who shows up?
is ari aster /ourjewishdirector/?>cult kills nonwhite>cult kills man literally named Christian>inducts huwhite woman into the cult>accidently or on purpose makes movie about how white people are edgy and scaryhmmm haven't seen it but conflicted, thought it would be nothing but race baiting or white ppl EVIL and nothing else
>>117884728He's not wrong though
>>117884944I think every 90 years they have the festival and some members are in charge of bringing new blood and sacrifices. So I think Pelle wanted her to be new blood from the beginning. He seemed to believe she had a good shot at becoming the May queen. Maybe they do recruiting more frequently though. And also, it seems like everyone who died either tried to leave or broke the rules, so maybe if they had been good, they could have joined as new blood too.
>>117885016i guess? non whites would do the same but they're too dumb so there's just a bunch of serial killers that run around the hood blasting people off the bat.
>>117885072pretty sure the black guy was toast tho right no matter what? lol
>>117885012>>117884728Yeah it made rural Scandinavian cults seem kind of cool honestly. It helps that they are pretty peaceful 90% of the time, and that they helped Dani attain retribution and belonging.
>>117885126They didn't really seem too keen on using him for seed. Some of the girls would glance at the other guy, until he pissed on their tree and fucked that up for himself.
>>117885098Not always. This guy was Hispanic.
>>117885164Yea, its kind of like the cult could sense the relationship between Christian and Dani was doomed so they just expedited their break up.
so what's up with ari aster and cults?

The only bad thing about it really is that it's filmed in Hungary.
>>117886614why would they do that
So from what I can surmise the movie is about a boyfriend that is essentially a strawman of all of the things feminists complain about with no redeeming qualities, who is then tortured to death in the most violent way possible. This is portrayed as a good thing which he deserves for daring to be a bad boyfriend. Not getting dumped, getting fucking tortured to death. Is that about right?

>>117884291>i would happily die for both of them
Did this movie bomb?
>>117887005Yes and no. A major theme of the movie is guilt. Christian is considering breaking up with Dani at the beginning but is guilted into staying due to her loss. Then she guilts her way into coming on the trip to Sweden. They proceed to do most things on the trip out of guilt for hurting each other’s feelings and you almost feel bad for Christian until you realize he really is a piece of shit, not only to Dani but his friends as well. He gets worse than he deserves but it is no way presented as a good thing.
>>117884026she's not the cult queen. she's only the may queen and we haven't seen any previous may queen which is ominus in itself. it's no happy ending. her new family practically manipulated her into staying with them and they sacrifice their own members. so, again, where are previous may queens?
>>117878885>I wanted an ending where Dani and Chris reconcile and overthrow the cult.if he bacame the bear demon after the sacrifice and destroyed the cult the movie would actually be commercial. or if they overthrew the cult in any other way. but this shit was just garbage and not even yas queen slay that some desperately want it to be.
>>117886591nope. they kill their own members. she's not safe with them but considering that she's gone crazy by the end it doesn't matter what they do with her. it's not a happy ending and was never intended to be. it's "real horror for her begins after the credits" type of a deal.
>>117887005it isn't a feminist movie or feminist message. those who saw it are just dumb and too up their own woke asses. I'd say reviews that blabbed about feminism hurt the boxoffice.

I find the fact that Christian was too much of a pussy to break up with Dani and instead stayed with her, silently begrudging her and shit-talking her behind her back, most heinous of all. Deserved death.
>>117900968Maybe he stayed with her because Dani's family had just died and he wasn't a complete monster.
>>117901056I’d argue leading someone on and lying that you love them is actually more monstrous. It seems to imply he had already been doing that for years even.

>>117880416the title isn't in english ya cock
was there any supernatural stuff in the logic of the movie? I think that the psychedelic drug use is supposed to throw doubt into the equation, but there was the same light effect in some scenes that was also in hereditary when the demon was interacting and manipulating characters were the cults religious beliefs true, within the context of the movie?
>>117905165NoLike you said, the drug blurs the line of reality, but there’s no blatant supernatural magic like in hereditary. As far as I remember.
>>117905165>were the cults religious beliefs true, within the context of the movie? As far as those who were willingly participating in the cult. But you don't see anything truly supernatural happen. No ghosts or demons. Just people doing some unsettling shit.

Were Dani's parents sacrificed in a winter time ritual? What was the singing about? Did they die at all? When her sister said she was sick of the dark, and was going (parents are going too) did she actually mean going back to sweden?Dani never actually saw her families bodies, she was told about them over the phone by "the police"Also her mum was maybe at the final feast, could have been a hallucination though
>>117910723That was like years before though because the couple had been together for a few years at that point. Most people that are normies like the britbong couple don't realize that stupid brainwashed incels hold onto rejection for that long. I don't think it was stupidity so much as it was just ignorance. You're talking like those chicks deserve to die when they reject fat nerds who kill them because they can't mentally handle rejection. Killing someone is wrong. End of story. >>117910778Happened years before though.
>>117910858>Also her mum was maybe at the final feast, could have been a hallucination thoughNo that was definitely a hallucination
>>117910993I don’t know if it did. It seems like they were recently engaged after only dating for a short while, which is why it became awkward and sad for Dani when she realized she had been dating Christian for even longer (and he couldn’t remember). That being said, how long ago it happened doesn’t really change the fact that it was a shitty thing to do and makes their characters seem like shitty people because it’s only one of the few things we get to learn about them.
>>117911502No they said 3 or 4 years and then Dani was like "us too!!" But stupid Christian didn't know to share her enthusiasm. Also it's not shitty to reject someone if you don't want to date them. You really sound like one of these guys who can't handle when a girl says no.
I liked it. It's a slow burn because I ended up chewing the themes and scenes later which make me want to go back. The first act dragged a bit and I don't think Aster is great with "normal" college student/people dialogue. It was pretty forced in weird ways. Also took me out that at no point were they weirded out or suspicious of this large way too goofy/happy colony acting strange from the beginning. We're far too aware and educated going all the way back to Jonestown for these academics to not be tipped off at all. Second half of the movie was great though. The acting was amazing, and the subtle things here and there were really enjoyable.

>>117888996look up pagan holidays, you nitwit, not farmers alamnacpagans used the solstices & equinoxes as key seasonal dates, along with the mid-point days (example: halloween is halfway between the fall equinox & winter solstice, mayday is halfway between spring equinox and summer solstice...) >>117904654they DRUGGED HIM AND PHYSICALLY FORCED HIM TO CHEAT. He was essentially raped. I don't think I'd call that consent on his partlets not forget he was sex starved as well. That's no reason to die. If anybody should have understood, it should have been Dani, who was also drugged and forced into rituals she had no way to get out of
>>117911851He was basically chubby chris pratt from like 10 years ago
>>117913224they pressured him into drinking something that "lowered [his] defences and made [him] susceptible to the influence", but Dani didn't know anything about that
>>117893708Ruined the movie for me desu
>>117905165>were the cults religious beliefs true, within the context of the movie?it's different from Hereditary in this respect....I think "true" isn't the right way to frame it. From the POV of the cult, it was very true. In fact, you could call their way of life much more "whole" than these modern, lost college students. What's more true-- modern nihilism, or a warped but funcitonal traditionalism? Was Dani's family background solid and reliable? Apparently not, since both she and her sister had mental health issues. In that sense, the world she and the rest of the characters come from is arguably less true than the one that includes nature and offerings to the gods as part of the cycle of life. At least, I think that's part of what Ari is getting at here....How strange it is that such feelings of wholesomeness can live in tandem with such horrific proximity to death and suffering
>>117906093i dunno, I got the same impression. that this was a rare ceremony that happens every 90 years, and that in this case, it *was* literal, which is why it's creepy
>>117913449I also see it as a commentary on the lack of community in modern society, I can definitely relate to having that loose group of friends, surface level connections that only exist because you went to school together and not really going beyond that. The cult had a true sense of community and support that someone like Dani needed in that exact moment and wasn't getting from her own social circle
>>117880945>movies to have happy endings.>>b-but Dani got a new family>Nah, fuck off. I wanted an ending where Dani and Chris reconcile and overthrow the cult.Do swedes really make blood sacrifices in the summer?
>>117911629>No they said 3 or 4 yearsI don’t think so. And you seem to be taking this too personally. It’s just easy to see how their characters were being set up in a way to have tension with the Swedish guy and have an element of dislikability, same as every other character who died.
>>117911851Chubby Chris Pratt meets Seth Rogen
Director has confirmed he is working on an extended cut that runs at least half an hour longer, will it be kino?
>>117878359Why is it impossible to find online?
>>117911851Yes. The whole time I was thinking he’s a knock-off Chris Pratt. And why did he keep making that stupid face all throughout the movie.
>>117913745What if it's just 30 minutes more of the ritual sex scene with more old lady chorus moaning?
>>117912716it's just food for thought, bro
>>117913772this, but then again it must be torture to hold up your phone to record in a theatre for 2 hours and 20 minutes. here's to hoping something pops up soon, i wanna rewatch
>>117899258That was an obvious bate, why else would he go out of his way to say the only black character in the movie was innocent.
>>117913745there was some mysterious scenes of the disabled kid that didn't go anywherehe was a bigger character in the story than was shown, i believe, probably because the producers were nervous about the representation of an inbred character stirring bad press from reactionaries maybe the extra footage will show more of him
>>117913342exactly my point. so if they had had a chance to talk it out, she probably could have forgiven him since she was in a similar positionbtw, they also have him that smoke to "restore his vitality" which is herb talk for "this shit is gonna give you a boner"
>>117913625absolutely agreed that this was part of the point of the film too...the tyranny and the power of real, deep, tribal bonds. How wholesome and intense they are, and how we are lost and "off" in a culture without them
>>117890258>>117912721Couldn’t literally any of the women there have been previous May queens? It’s not like they would have had a special crown still. For all we know, that old ass lady helping Christian have sex could have been a May queen back in her day.
>>117913886>>117913745I want to find out what the FUCK was up with that eternally crying baby. You see a scene with scissors being handed off near its crib I think, but we never got any payoff from that.
>>117913636yeah bro. didn't you know? white people are scary>>117913786would you nut in that situation?
>>117912940>He essentially ignored her and wasn't very well attuned to her, himself, or anything going on around them.So a boring asshole then. Also lying that you love someone for years while being too weak to end a relationship is pretty terrible. He seems like your typical lazy monkey brancher.
>>117878359>>117878359>>117878359>zoomers actually think this and hereshitary are "scary"
>>117914074he's your bog standard, basic dude. Not especially aware, not especially proactive, but not really intending to do any harm either
If you guys get a chance, watch pic related. You'll see how cults are persuasive and predatory on individuals with PTSD and loss, or who feel disenfranchised. Hell, you can just watch the cult episode of King of the Hill and get a quick lesson in it. Shit's so fascinating and sad.
I really liked the sound design and stuff. it was good
>>117914113No one says it's scarypeople who like it, people who don't, no one thinks it's scary
>>117914046>would you nut in that situation?Hell yes I would, that scene was hot as fuck.
>>117914046Probably. Probably laugh if I wasn't so freaked out on crazy trippy piss tea. Also, do you think they would have paralyzed Christian if he had just hung out and joined them rather than running away and finding the mutilated britbong?
>>117913897>chance to talk it outChris is utter shit at talking things out
>>117914005Babies cry at night, a lot. I took it as a reinforcement of the strong community where they were staying. A baby crying is not only the parents' problem, the whole community comes together to take care of it.from a quick google search, it seems that putting a pair of open scissors underneath a pillow wards off evil spirits and nightmares. Also maybe related to the redhead cutting her pubes somehow?
>>117913697Then how long did they say.
>>117914005I talked about this with my friend the other day and it sounds fucking retarded but I feel like all the psychadelics were way more important than they seemed. All the villagers seemed to be really immune to it when they partook (constantly throughout the film) and I'm guessing they all share the same long-term effects that psychadelics give you (schizophrenia, could explain their collective delusion.) It's entirely possible they bottlefeed their babies psychedelics substances so they develop early schizophrenia. I don't think it's that much of a stretch but I wish they would've hinted at that more so it wasn't left in the air.
>>117914292To follow that up, do you think they would have hurt or killed any of the visitors if they had just played it cool (not freak out, not piss on ancient tree, not try to take photos of sacred texts, not run away and go places you're not supposed to). Just curious if the colony would have just let them leave like "ok, thanks for visiting! hope you enjoyed our rituals!"
>>117914412They said multiple times in the movie that they require outside sacrifices. It had nothing to do with their stupid choices, they were planned to be killed anyway.
>>117878359It is a half way decent clone of the 1970s wicker man, aimed at millennials instead of Calvinists.
>>117914412they sacrificed four of their own, four foreigners, plus one more of the may queens choosingit was the plan all along to kill at least some of them.
>>117914371From what I remember they didn’t say, only how they met and are now engaged. Only Dani and Chris say how long they’ve been together. I could be wrong though.
>>117914005I just assumed the baby had colic. I had colic as a baby and I’m thankful my parents didn’t murder me lol
>>117914484>>117914525ah yeah. true. Well damn that makes Pelé or whatever the fuck his name was even creepier. Just hanging out in the States making friendly with college students knowing his "family" is going to kill them.
What did the things they did with the bodies at the end mean? Jester hat, flower eyes, bear suit, etc. Was there some sort of symbolism there?
>>117914577Do you think Pelle intentionally chose douchebags as “friends” knowing he was going to kill them?
>>117913224He didn't have to drink the weird drug period blood juice. He could have said no at that point but he's a pushover. He got what was coming to him. No pun intended, heh. Also how is someone physically forced if they're on top doing the thrusting. Quit justifying this dumb shit.
>>117914616Stuff to make you think it deep when it random symbols
>>117914616Well i immediately gathered they made eyebrows man the jester because he was such a fucking clown the whole time.
>>117913897Just because you get a boner doesn't mean you have to stick it in someone.God damn. Men really are this stupid.
>>117914616They “skinned the fool” like they called the game they were playing at the beginning. The burning bear was shown on some of the wall paintings and they said they were vanquishing the darkness, so maybe the bear represents the Dark One. Apparently the lung dissection is based on some sort of ancient Viking torture.
>>117914616"Skin the fool." Mark was skinned, and he was the fool, therefore he's given the Jester's hat. The flower crown is given simply because Dani becomes May Queen, no clue about the bear suit though. That's beyond my comprehension.
>>117914677for fucking sure. He definitely went out of his way to make sure they were so up their own asses in "academia" that they'd treat everything with objectivism and cultural relativism. You knew that was the case when the ONE black dude from the states didn't make mention one about how creepy these frolicking weird ass white folks were. You had him, you had Mark who was so dead set on Euro pussy that nothing would have stopped him from going, and you had Christian who was just kind of an idiot and showed social lethargy. Dani was just a classic case of a cult preying on vulnerability and PTSD.
>>117914616Jester hat>he was a jokerflower eyes>he saw what he wasn't supposed to bear suit>he was bare naked
>>117914526Yea. I just saw it like a day ago and I remember them trading stories of how long they'd been together. It's the whole reason Dani brings it up.
>>117878359to be honest the trailer looks like it was set in some whity paradise, its pretty hard to get scared from beatifull grassy fields with beatiful blond women smiling lol
>>117914859Pelle is kind of ebin in that case
>>117914859>case of a cult preying on vulnerability and PTSDA community providing support and comfort.
>>117914371>>117914526They did say. 4 years.
>see some fucked up shit>"whoa, these cultures sure are fascinating"academics, am i rite lads
>>117914915are you... rationalizing cults?
The old guy literally stated the symbolism of the bear suit before setting the fireHe represents the moral faults in people, and with him goes their sins
>>117914965people like that remind me of the dude that went and lived with bears and then got him and his wife eaten.
>>117914872I saw it a day ago too. Maybe we were even in the same theater.
>>117915021"Cult" is just a derogatory term for a group of people that do not share the mainstream views anon.
>>117915021Yeah what even is a “cult” at the end of the day.
>>117909485Their skin color was fucking disgusting, they're literal street shitters. Digusting filth.
>>117915067You better not be the dumb asshole that thought I stole his seat and I literally had to show my fucking ticket to prove I was in fact sitting in the seat I paid for. What a God damn retard.
>>117915180Do you have anything original to say.
>>117914196The film was meant to scare you and it failed.
>>117900601he was date raped lmao
>>117915325Lmao no that was not me thankfully
>>117914683you're missing the point that he felt pressured to, considering its both bad manners, and how brutal he realized the cult was at that point. One of the central themes of the film is guilt, and in this case, the guilt of insulting a culture that you're a visitor to >Also how is someone physically forced if they're on top doing the thrustingdid you not watch the movie? did you not see the woman forcing him to penetrate and finish inside the girl? And what about situational pressure? Sure, everyone's a tough guy on the internet, but IRL, when you're forced into a very tense situation where it's obvious what you're expected to do, sometimes you find yourself doing things you don't want to.also, he was sex deprived, and I'm sure all of that made for a helluva confusion cocktail.don't make it so black and white, one-dimensional, when it wasn't. he didn't exactly seem happy about it while he was doing it, or afterward
>>117914774no, you fucking EQlet. Of course a boner doesnt mean you have to stick it in, but it does mean that they did everything they could to "get him in the mood". I wouldn't exactly call that full choice or consent on his end of things. Don't be such a projecting, judgemental cunt, okay
>>117907147he got date raped
>>117914894the weird part is it's like that for almost all of the film, interspersed with some really fucked up moments, which makes it all the weirder and creepier. Its aesthetically such a wholesome film
Question, did the parents die from the carbon monoxide leaking out or did Dani's sister kill them before an heroing her self? I feel like they would have woken up and noticed their daughter dragging a fucking big ass hose up two flights of stairs attached to a muffler.
>>117915391mmmmmmaybe. or maybe it was meant to challenge you and move you and maybe disturb you a bit. I dont think it was meant to be a hardline horror film. It's meant to be a little more realistic, and therefore a little more challenging and subtly disturbing, which it is, because something like this is plausible
>>117915554I think she killed them all with CO, because there were tubes in their room and they were still breathing during Dani’s phone call.
>>117915554she ran 2 hoses; one to their room under their closed door, and one to her face, lol
>>117915427People have tried to pressure me into doing stupid shit and I said no. It wasn't like they were threatening to kill him if he didn't do it. They even had a sit down talk about it beforehand. He's not a fuckin victim. He's just a weak ass bitch. Maybe you don't know how to say no to drugs but I definitely do and I know other people who are totally capable of doing the same because they don't want to end up knocking up some crazy redhead.Yes I saw the creepy old lady push on his ass to thrust in more but he did most of the thrusting. This is like participating in an orgy and then saying "I didn't want to cum, she made me do it"He wasn't tied up. No one held a gun to his head.He willingly took drugs and then fucked some random bitch he didn't know because he's mindless and can't make his own decisions. Another great example of this is him copying the other guys thesis. He seriously can't think for himself. People who can't think for themselves are low lifes.
>>117915554Carbon monoxide, she had one hose running into their room and one into her mouth.
It was an hour too long, great sex scene though.
>>117915425Good. You have no idea how much I wanted to punch that guy. But then I'd of gotten kicked out of the theater. That guy stormed off like a child when I showed him my ticket too. What an embarrassing piece of shit.
>>117878359The problem with films like The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar is that there isn’t any vaguely likeable character. Because you don’t want to see characters you care for get harmed. If they are all pricks then they can just die. Midsommar is also a shittier version of Wicker Man (1976)
>>117915483Explain him talking to that old lady about what they're going to do and all he says is "durr I think I ate her pubes"He was a dumb asshole.
>>117915631>>117915648>>117915689Jesus fuck. I'm pretty sensitive and familiar with mental illness, but can a bi-polar disorder episode make you both homicidal AND suicidal? Or was there something more going on? Also, again, how the fuck did the parents not wake up to a big hunking hose being dragged up the stairs.
>>117915606That's a pretty weak excuse. You can say the same thing with just about any film in any genre. Whenever they fail you can just say "b-b-but it's not supposed to do what it's supposed to" and pretentiously say it's challenging without elaborating what that actually means in this context. There are plenty of realistic movies that fail to do what they set out to, doesn't mean they're good. Also the movie was cartoonish and over the top, there was nothing realistic about it.
>>117915772You didn’t like Dani or the Swedish people even a little bit?
>>117915795>can a bi-polar disorder episode make you both homicidal AND suicidalYes unfortunately
>>117915772>Wicker Man (1976)It was 1973.Though it is true it just a remake of Wicker man but for modern audiences and not a 1970s British audience. For example, I know a few that could never buy that a unmarried man of his age hadn't had sex yet.
>>117914113>>117915391I think the film was supposed to be uncomfortable, not scary.
>117910042bump limit reached, anyone wanna move the discussion over to this existing thread?
>>117915648>>117915689I want to know how she managed to do this to the parents. Were they drugged before hand and she put a tube in their mouths?

>>117916356>I thought it came out that year. My badNo worries anon, I do not disagree with your statement. Though there are worse things then a copy of wickerman that is only about 70% as good.
>>117916356Every movie they make sends /tv/ into a tizzy for some reason. It Comes At Night, too.
>>117915787she had him brought in, he had no choice. and we never see him consenting or agreeing to do it. just her telling him that the redhead fancies him, and him not really saying much more than he found a pube in his food, lol. Next scene is him leaving the meeting. He never said he was into it or wanted her
>>117915795>but can a bi-polar disorder episode make you both homicidal AND suicidal?literally anything is possible in this life. When it comes to bipolar, I wouldnt put it out of the scope of being possible
>>117915805maybe, or maybe you're just being autistically rigid and trying to force it into the most familiar genre you can, and then poo pooing it when it doesn't quite fit
