I think every 90 years they have the festival and some members are in charge of bringing new blood and sacrifices. So I think Pelle wanted her to be new blood from the beginning. He seemed to believe she had a good shot at becoming the May queen. Maybe they do recruiting more frequently though. And also, it seems like everyone who died either tried to leave or broke the rules, so maybe if they had been good, they could have joined as new blood too.
>>

I'd say yes if you don't view it in the lens of modern moral applications.
>>
The only bad thing about it really is that it's filmed in Hungary.
>>
>>117886614
why would they do that
>>
So from what I can surmise the movie is about a boyfriend that is essentially a strawman of all of the things feminists complain about with no redeeming qualities, who is then tortured to death in the most violent way possible. This is portrayed as a good thing which he deserves for daring to be a bad boyfriend. Not getting dumped, getting fucking tortured to death.
Is that about right?

>>
Did this movie bomb?
>>
>>117887005
Yes and no. A major theme of the movie is guilt. Christian is considering breaking up with Dani at the beginning but is guilted into staying due to her loss. Then she guilts her way into coming on the trip to Sweden. They proceed to do most things on the trip out of guilt for hurting each other’s feelings and you almost feel bad for Christian until you realize he really is a piece of shit, not only to Dani but his friends as well. He gets worse than he deserves but it is no way presented as a good thing.
>>
>>117884026
she's not the cult queen. she's only the may queen and we haven't seen any previous may queen which is ominus in itself. it's no happy ending. her new family practically manipulated her into staying with them and they sacrifice their own members. so, again, where are previous may queens?
>>
>>117878885
>I wanted an ending where Dani and Chris reconcile and overthrow the cult.

if he bacame the bear demon after the sacrifice and destroyed the cult the movie would actually be commercial. or if they overthrew the cult in any other way. but this shit was just garbage and not even yas queen slay that some desperately want it to be.
>>
>>117886591
nope. they kill their own members. she's not safe with them but considering that she's gone crazy by the end it doesn't matter what they do with her. it's not a happy ending and was never intended to be. it's "real horror for her begins after the credits" type of a deal.
>>
>>117887005
it isn't a feminist movie or feminist message. those who saw it are just dumb and too up their own woke asses. I'd say reviews that blabbed about feminism hurt the boxoffice.

he was a terrible boyfriend all the way through, he almost forgot her birthday (gave her a shittier gift than the Swedish chad too). It's obvious that every time they argued, like the one where they were arguing over him going to Sweden and not telling her, that he was in the wrong and manipulative. Ultimately he cheated on her for some sex ritual, while she was pushing off the advances of the Swedish dude.

Idk, he seems kinda shitty and deserved to die really. Only sad death was the black dude who was snapping some pics in that library, everyone else was shitty and deserved to die.

Were Dani's parents sacrificed in a winter time ritual? What was the singing about? Did they die at all?
When her sister said she was sick of the dark, and was going (parents are going too) did she actually mean going back to sweden?
Dani never actually saw her families bodies, she was told about them over the phone by "the police"
Also her mum was maybe at the final feast, could have been a hallucination though
>>
>>117910723
That was like years before though because the couple had been together for a few years at that point.
Most people that are normies like the britbong couple don't realize that stupid brainwashed incels hold onto rejection for that long.
I don't think it was stupidity so much as it was just ignorance.
You're talking like those chicks deserve to die when they reject fat nerds who kill them because they can't mentally handle rejection.
Killing someone is wrong. End of story.

I don’t know if it did. It seems like they were recently engaged after only dating for a short while, which is why it became awkward and sad for Dani when she realized she had been dating Christian for even longer (and he couldn’t remember). That being said, how long ago it happened doesn’t really change the fact that it was a shitty thing to do and makes their characters seem like shitty people because it’s only one of the few things we get to learn about them.
>>
>>117911502
No they said 3 or 4 years and then Dani was like "us too!!" But stupid Christian didn't know to share her enthusiasm.
Also it's not shitty to reject someone if you don't want to date them.

I liked it. It's a slow burn because I ended up chewing the themes and scenes later which make me want to go back. The first act dragged a bit and I don't think Aster is great with "normal" college student/people dialogue. It was pretty forced in weird ways. Also took me out that at no point were they weirded out or suspicious of this large way too goofy/happy colony acting strange from the beginning. We're far too aware and educated going all the way back to Jonestown for these academics to not be tipped off at all. Second half of the movie was great though. The acting was amazing, and the subtle things here and there were really enjoyable.

The first thing someone said to her when she entered the commune was "welcome home"

look up pagan holidays, you nitwit, not farmers alamnac

pagans used the solstices & equinoxes as key seasonal dates, along with the mid-point days (example: halloween is halfway between the fall equinox & winter solstice, mayday is halfway between spring equinox and summer solstice...) The 8 sacred days that map out the seasons. Thus, according to this view, the beginning of summer is May 1st (beltane), and the height of it is the Solstice. The end of summer is August 2 (Lughnasadh). Hence, MID FUCKIN SOMMAR

Dani= Nature, the Earth maiden

>were the cults religious beliefs true, within the context of the movie?

it's different from Hereditary in this respect....I think "true" isn't the right way to frame it. From the POV of the cult, it was very true. In fact, you could call their way of life much more "whole" than these modern, lost college students. What's more true-- modern nihilism, or a warped but funcitonal traditionalism? Was Dani's family background solid and reliable? Apparently not, since both she and her sister had mental health issues. In that sense, the world she and the rest of the characters come from is arguably less true than the one that includes nature and offerings to the gods as part of the cycle of life. At least, I think that's part of what Ari is getting at here....How strange it is that such feelings of wholesomeness can live in tandem with such horrific proximity to death and suffering

I also see it as a commentary on the lack of community in modern society, I can definitely relate to having that loose group of friends, surface level connections that only exist because you went to school together and not really going beyond that. Babies cry at night, a lot. I took it as a reinforcement of the strong community where they were staying. A baby crying is not only the parents' problem, the whole community comes together to take care of it.

I talked about this with my friend the other day and it sounds fucking retarded but I feel like all the psychadelics were way more important than they seemed. All the villagers seemed to be really immune to it when they partook (constantly throughout the film) and I'm guessing they all share the same long-term effects that psychadelics give you (schizophrenia, could explain their collective delusion.) It's entirely possible they bottlefeed their babies psychedelics substances so they develop early schizophrenia. I don't think it's that much of a stretch but I wish they would've hinted at that more so it wasn't left in the air.
>>
>>117914292
To follow that up, do you think they would have hurt or killed any of the visitors if they had just played it cool (not freak out, not piss on ancient tree, not try to take photos of sacred texts, not run away and go places you're not supposed to). you're missing the point that he felt pressured to, considering its both bad manners, and how brutal he realized the cult was at that point. One of the central themes of the film is guilt, and in this case, the guilt of insulting a culture that you're a visitor to

>Also how is someone physically forced if they're on top doing the thrusting

did you not watch the movie? did you not see the woman forcing him to penetrate and finish inside the girl? And what about situational pressure? Sure, everyone's a tough guy on the internet, but IRL, when you're forced into a very tense situation where it's obvious what you're expected to do, sometimes you find yourself doing things you don't want to.

also, he was sex deprived, and I'm sure all of that made for a helluva confusion cocktail.

mmmmmmaybe. or maybe it was meant to challenge you and move you and maybe disturb you a bit. I dont think it was meant to be a hardline horror film. Maybe you don't know how to say no to drugs but I definitely do and I know other people who are totally capable of doing the same because they don't want to end up knocking up some crazy redhead.

The problem with films like The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar is that there isn’t any vaguely likeable character. Because you don’t want to see characters you care for get harmed. If they are all pricks then they can just die. Midsommar is also a shittier version of Wicker Man (1976)

>>
>>117915606
That's a pretty weak excuse. You can say the same thing with just about any film in any genre. Whenever they fail you can just say "b-b-but it's not supposed to do what it's supposed to" and pretentiously say it's challenging without elaborating what that actually means in this context. There are plenty of realistic movies that fail to do what they set out to, doesn't mean they're good. Also the movie was cartoonish and over the top, there was nothing realistic about it.
