For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

New Group Build!

Oddball Color Schemes

So the oddball color schemes won in the poll, so we're gonna run with that. What counts as an oddball color scheme? Stuff like vapor wave, the 90s cup, leopard print, Louis Vitton, or generally anything that's odd.

RG Nu has a P-Bandai Double Fin Funnel expansion set. Fairly pricey at 1870円, although minus 432 for waterslides and 540 for an AB5, 898 isn't -too- terrible for an extra set of funnels. Then again you pay another 648 for (flat-rate) shipping, and since most anons here are westerners you fork over even more for middleman fees. Blergh.

At least the action base is cool.

I misremembered, Astray Red is only $160 (AU), it's Noir and Barbatos that are $200

You can't order spare runners as far as I'm aware, it's been asked. You can always attempt to scratch build it, something like a polycap may not be that hard if it's a small, simple shape. Or perhaps pin the pieces back together with a paper clip and glue, that's often a response to a peg breaking. Have you ever done something like that, anon?

Question from the past thread.

Does BANDAI every improve the quality of kits (such as plastic and fit quality) between reprint?

I'm asking this as I'm thinking of buying the RG sinaju and zeta gundam, and I hear they were flawed at release
>>
>>7632115
No they typically don't change anything for reprints only exception I can think of is that the new Unicorn MGs all use the new leg and head molds not on the original OVA ver. As for the RG Zeta and Sinanju they are not flawed they are Real grade kits and not toys they can and will break or have parts fall off if mishandled

>>

>>
>>7632265
That's pretty standard for SDs. Does it mention anywhere in the manual if it could make use of the Cross Silhouette frame? If so, that'll give it a lot more articulation. There's also a booster set coming out that'll give it even more articulation than the frame does but it'll need either some scratch building or painting to not stand out.
>>
>>7631852
Post a pic of the polycap you need (ideally, both a photo of the broken one and the diagram from the instructions). I have a pretty big collection of spares, maybe I'll have something that will fit.

How is Bandai plastic in comparison to Kotobukiya? I'm really not hamfisted, but the only two kits I own are frame arms and both felt rather brittle and have broken at the arm connections. I'll try to be more careful next time, but I have two (newer) Bandai HGs arriving tomorrow and I'm just curious how Bandai's plastic compares on average
>>
>>7632731
To me at least, bandai plastic feels much thinner and more fragile, but I dunno about others.
>>
>>7632731
>I'm really not hamfisted
>broken at the arm connections
You're living a lie.
>>
>>7632449
As a snapfag they're not that bad out of box. The Astray really impressed me with how well it's color separated. The Providence is seriously the worst out of the first 6 though.
>>
>>7632731
In my experience Koto tends to use the same, fairly hard and brittle blend for most PS runners, and make the high-stress parts out of ABS or POM on newer releases.
Bandai uses multiple different blends of PS, the stuff they used for the frame on my Nu Ver Ka felt really soft and flexible compared to most Koto stuff but the armor parts are pretty hard.
>>
>>7632731
bandai plastic is a pleasant experience compared to koto
>>
>>7631896
Why can't they just make a regular SD Tallgeese. Fuck Bandai.
>>
>>7632731
Having just built a Lord Impulse from koto's hexa gear line, and the RG crossbone I will tell you that putting koto kits together really does a number on my fingers that I just don't get with Bandai's stuff.

Now if only Bandai would make something like the Hexagear stuff I'd be in heaven.

Do RGs and HGs feel as flimsy as HGs? I'm assuming they don't, but who knows. I recently got into building, and while I like it I really don't like the feel of the HG kits once they're complete. They feel really flimsy to me.
>>
>>7635425

>>
>>7635425
>Do HGs feels as flimsy as HGs?
Brain farts aside, RGs are a mixed bag, the RX-78-2 and Astray Red for example are worse than most HGs in the stability department, while the Exia is better.
>>
>>7635425
>>7635431
Fuck, I meant MGs, but you caught my meaning.

Any other HGs that you recommend? So far I've built Narrative C-Packs and 00 Sky, and I've got Astaroth, Burning Gundam, and Impulse coming in the mail.
Also any recommendation for a smaller panel liner, or one to clean up after using a larger tipped pen?
>>
Why are sanding sticks so hard to find locally? I went into two places (Hobby Town and Hobby Lobby) and the only kind of sanding sticks they had were like 2-300 grit. Might try an art store next.
>>

I'd recommend MGs, they're awesome and rock solid. My MG GM 2.0 is the best kit I've ever built
>>
>>7635449

>>
>>7635312
As someone who has yet to build a MG 2.0 Zaku, what exactly is the problem with these things, and how do they hurt people? I see people complaining about the pipes all the time.
>>
>>7635439
HGs are arguably more stable than RGs. I find RGs beautiful, but kind of unpleasant to handle and pose. The combination of an extremely tight internal frame and tons of tiny, intricate parts means handling them feels kind of spooky to me. It feels like it's about to fall apart or snap in my hands, even if that's not actually true. HGs, by comparison, tend to be chunky and solid and composed of relatively few parts, so I find them much more pleasant to hold. Of the three grades, HGs are the ones that I would think would survive a shelf dive best.

MGs are great. The frames are real nice, the parts aren't as fiddly as RGs because they're bigger, they're just nice all around. Give one a try maybe.

>>7635439
As for HGs, try a Grimoire, or Zaku F2, or Gustav Karl. Those are some of the most solid kits I own.
>>
>>7635539
Bandai made the pipe construction very easy, practically. For each pipe you first cut each of the outer shell (green) and then slide it across the runner over the inner cable (grey).
Once all are done, you cut each end of the inner cable and ta-da, you've got the zaku pipe.
However, the fit is very tight. You have to really push the pieces across, and it starts to take a toll on your fingers - thumbs especially.
In my experience it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be, and it was a much more pleasant experience than the standard way of doing pipes, e.g. Marasai, Gouf.
>>
>>7635539
Parts that small are a bitch to cut + sand and because it so fucking small, you can accidentally lose your grip and it will fly into another dimension.

Because he'd look cool next to my SoC Kaiser when he's all cleaned up and topcoated. Plus the Scrander is on a 3mm peg so it can easily go on another kit or something when I'm bored and want to fly a FAG around the room or whatever.

>>7634901
I always make a mess with dust when I file stuff, will definately get him cleaned and do a little more filing in places before I do anything else with him. The stickers for the most part aren't too bad, it's just that the ones for the sword as huge and expect you to neatly fold parts to cover the sides of the blade, and I'm dyspraxic so when it comes to fine movements I'm awful. I hate doing eye stickers for that reason, they're always squiff.

>>7635033
I'm gonna definately give painting his blade a go, I've got a week off work next week and not a whole lot to do. Haven't actually hand painted anything model-wise before though, just some kits painted by rattlecans a few years back. And the model shop near me doesn't carry Vallejo, just Tamiya, Games Workshop paints and Humbrol. Are Tamiya's bits any good for hand painting? I've got a bunch of their paints from when I was going to get an airbrush a year or two ago and just never got around to it.

The first question you need to ask yourself is: "Where the fuck am I going to put it after I assemble it?".

If you don't have a display case or some kind of dust-proof enclosure that is big enough you might as well put it in the trash because you're going to ruin it anyway the first time you try to dust it.

that's some industrial strength you have there

there are molding defects and ejector pins that must be fixed, but these are so slight he would have to drill actual holes into the plastic for the filling putty to hold

Has anyone ordered kits off of yahoo japan auctions?
Due to some errors I have 90ish dollars deposited on zenmarket and wanted to get some stuff for the group builds.

Most of the time it's not worth it unless the kit is ultra-rare or someone is dumping a bunch of kits in one lot for cheap (but be prepared to pay shipping for shit you don't want).
I'm pretty sure you can get your money back from Zenmarket.

How hard is starting with a MG kit? I kinda spaghettied at my local hobby store when i went to get tools for it and saw my favorite gundam and the one I wanted to start with, Guncannon. I planned on ordering the HG off amazon but there was one right there for the same price, so I bought it without another glance, I was so excited.
Now I'm stuck with this kit I really want to do but I'm afraid to fuck up panel lining and the stickers. Has anyone done this kit before, and how intense is it? I fucking love guncannon and want to do it justice
>>

>>

I did, I get its just more parts im just wondering how long/intricate it is cause I don't want to be burnt out by the first gundam i build
>>
>>7639872
Its not really any worse, just more time consuming. If you just want to snap together you can still build it within a few hours.

Additional steps add more time, filling seams, sanding, repainting, panel lining, etc.
If you are new to model kits, it might pay to watch a tutorial on youtube. You can hurt yourself on a runner/sprue, if you use a hobby knife, you will eventually cut yourself.

Looks like an older MG, so it shouldn't even be that long of a build.

Got a couple Cross Silhouette questions;
Do the Zeromaru kits come with an actual cs frame? I saw a video on the crossbone where they used the red frame from the Zeromaru kit.
Also, does anyone have the newish tall booster frame and the Nightingale? I want to know if it looks janky or not.

Finished building the FAG Greifan. If anyone is interested in buying one, don't panel line it with pour type Gundam marker, go for Vallejo wash or something similar. Other than that the only major issue is how finicky it is (like everything Kotobukiya makes). Getting it into the weird chicken strider mode was pretty simple, but actually getting her to sit there is a pain in the ass.

Also I want to figure out what MSG weapons would look good here. Other than the bulky arms (as cool as they are), feels a bit lacking.

Greifan really is my favorite of all the FAGs. All the others are just like...here is an anime thot and we stapled some random mecha bits to her, where as this one is a legit well thought out incorporation of the idea of a girl mixed with a mech.

its just too bad the actual design means her posability in the combined mode is super limited.

Just finished building my first MG kit and it's come with wet transfer decals, was going to buy some Mr Mark Softer for them.

Is adding a topcoat over the whole thing worthwhile? Never done it before and I've got no idea what I'm doing, can I get some advice?

(yes, I read the thread guide)
>>
>>7644624
Ok that depends. Here's the irony of plastic models: The shit aimed at beginners and kids is the shit that needs the most work and talent to actually make look good.

Your standard MG gundam kit will look perfectly fine just out of the box assembled. No paint, no panel lining and it will still be a fine model, especially the newer ones. But something like pokemon plamo or the one piece ships or the Sargent frog stuff are very cheap and simple to build but are massively reliant on stickers and generally just look very cheap and shitty unless you do extensive detailing and painting.

I've made a huge variety of kits and this is my advice

1. Almost any kit is fine to start with, especially kits from the last 5 years or so. Model kits are not hard to make For price considerations, a gundam HG is a good choice but MG's are not that much more expensive and are honestly more fun to put together.

2. Bigger and more expensive kits are generally no more complex than smaller ones in terms of the actual mechanics of putting them together. They just have more parts and detail

3. For your first models I suggest sticking with Bandai. Bandai is by no means the "Best" but their models tend to be the most user friendly overall. Kotobukiya has some neat stuff but they often have a lot of little parts, very tight tolerances, and are generally just not as easy for a first time modeler to do. Albeit I did a Koto kit as my third kit so its not THAT bad.
>>

Anyone here know how to not to get orange peel when painting?
>>
>>7647490
Shorter spray bursts, longer distance away from the model, do it in a place with low humidity, and be aware that some brands are just prone to orange peeling(I've never been able to use Testors top coat without getting orange peeling). Also Semi Gloss and Flat will sometimes orange peel on application but may flatten out as it dries and cures so let your top coat dry between coats if you're noticing orange peeling.
>>
>>7647516
I'm super fucking guilty of spraying too close.
>>
>>7640584
I also like Blue Zaku. The version from the zero eighth MS Team.
>>
>>7647516
>longer distance away from the model
So the paint has a better chance to dry on the way to the surface? How does that help against orange peel exactly?

The problem of orange peel is the problem of paint drying prematurely and/or non-uniformly.
Perfectly wet coat will never produce orange peel (unless the paint is trash). Spraying from short distance is more likely to result in a wet coat.

>>7647490
Properly thinned paint, retarder, good spraying technique (which comes with lots of practice).
>>
How much PSI do you guys use for pre-shade?
Speaking of shading, which one is better for subtle shade, preshade or highlighting?
>>
>>7647521
So am I, but I don't get orange peel too often. Honestly I don't thin the same way consistently, I never count drops to get a particular ratio, I just add thinner until I get a milky consistency. Sometimes it may be 45:55, other times 55:45. Things usually turn out okay. My biggest problem is dust settling into the paint between coats.
>>
>>7643466
They're fun little bastards. Really cheap, generic looks make it easy to army build, they use the same 3mm plugs (I'm pretty sure it's 3mm) for attaching pretty much everything, so they're very customizable right out of the box. You will need multiples of stuff to do some of the more creative things you might see online. I picked up 2 Altos, some weapon packs, and one each of the current available armor. Honestly, I want more armor for these guys, I the close combat shield on as a side skirt, and I'd like one on the other side as well. If you're curious, definitely drop 25 bucks on an Alto, a couple armor packs, and a weapon pack.

Oh, and last note, you can actually build them in 30 minutes. My first one took 34 minutes, the second one took 27.
>>
>>7647873
>How much PSI do you guys use for pre-shade

When i spray my paint, sometime in the middle of it, there're small little drop of paint spit out on to my plastic.
I have to wipe it off, what's up with that?
>>
>>7647881
I deal with the dust by leaving the parts to dry in my spray booth. My spray booth is also massive though so that might not be possible for everyone. If not you could just get a sterilite container and poke some holes in the sides though.
>>
>>7647638
Whenever I've had orange peeling, pulling away has improved the finish. So maybe it would be more accurate to say "adjust your angle and distance as necessary"?

1/100 Grimgerde a shit, they fucked up the long elegant proportions of the HG and made it look gawky and awkward.
>>
>>7650307
Is that the MG? that looks like quite a bigger sword than the one he comes with.
>>
>>7650542
There is no MG Grimgerde. And that's just the normal sword it comes with. Maybe you're getting thrown off proportionally because this Grimgerde is modified? Shoulders and faceplate are flipped, hands swapped out, feet swapped, some panels removed.

>>7650715
there's no MG but there is a 1/100 scale kit like that anon said

That's definitely possible, but check out that handle though, the photo anon posted is way longer, and has a slightly different pommel.

Ah, you're right, it was so close looking to default that I didn't notice the longer handle and pommel.

I live in NZ which has an import law where goods under $400 value dont get taxed. Ive never ever been charged additionally when using EMS which I have done for years. Ive always been careful to have the total value of my orders be well under $400 total.

HLJ have a new deal with DHL which makes them significantly cheaper than EMS. Decide to try it out to save some money (total value of shipment is just below $300). Wake up to an email today that customs is holding my package & charging me $198 to let it in. WTF did DHL do? so pissed off I decided to use them over EMS which Ive never had a problem with. Anyone else in New Zealand been fucked over by any similar charges? I'm trying to dispute it at the moment and dont seem to be getting anywhere over the phone. fuck DHL.

Hmm, what happens if you don't accept the charge? Would it get sent back to HLJ and then you could re-ship it with EMS instead? I don't know if that would work, but if it did it'd certainly be cheaper I think.

The problem is most are ugly as sin and combining them doesn't help that much. They all look way over-designed and busy.

I don't know how the sword is constructed, but it could just some kitbashed handle. Blade looks pretty much the same.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy plamo and have been doing it nearly my entire life, but sometimes looking at a huge manual and dozens of runners just makes me sigh in dismay. It won't be an unenjoyable ride, but it will be a long and sometimes grueling one.

Nigger, I don't think you realize how good you have it.

Hey, I'm repurposing some old gundams that got busted up. What would be the best way to get them looking presentable again? Could I just cement the pieces back together, spread some tamiya putty over the crack, and sand that shit smooth, or should I make a jar of melted plastic goo and seam weld it?

What brand of nippers can I buy for like $20 ish that aren't shit? I'm new to gunpla and tried using some nippers I got for like 7 bucks, but they're shit and keep slipping when I try to cut parts off the runner. But when I google around for recommendations, everyone seems to recommend $50 God Hands and I'm not really sure I want to throw down that much money at the moment. Should I suck it up and just get some of those or is there something slightly more affordable?
>>
>>7655525
If you want to make do, just grab some Xurons.
>>
>>7655525
Most things in that range are pretty close together. Just buy a single blade nipper for 20-30 and you won't be much better or worse than anything else. Lower, buy Xurons that will maul your shit but last until the end of time, higher, buy Memehands that will require a bit of delicacy and another pair of nippers on the side anyway.
