Yeah, it was a joke from last thread but I still think it's funny.

Thread question: what projectiles/shooters did you personally prefer over the years? What other options could they have added if the story had gone longer? Was it a bad idea to use those as gimmicks instead of new technic/gear functions?

For launchers reference
>disk launchers, Metru Nui
>Rhotuka, Metru Nui 2: Hordika boogaloo
>Zamor launchers, Voya Nui
>Squid launchers, Barraki
>Cordak blasters, Toa Mahri
>Midak Skyblasters, Phantoka
>Nynrah Ghostblasters, Mistika
>Thornax launchers, Glatorian
Personally I'm fond of Skyblasters and Thornax. They were easy to aim and use, looked pretty damn cool, and better yet worked well. Compare to the squid. They looked neat but were pretty terrible.
>>
Squids for life. I still have about a hundred of them. Probably gonna start hoarding them from ebay and bricklink and build an army.

Damn, really? Good on ya man but I couldn't stand the little dudes. Never could get them to work. What did you see in them?

Boring answer but definitely Zamor launchers. Overused though Zamor spheres were, the moddability of them just couldn't be beat. Plus in general they fired so much better than all the other weapons.

Technic competition cannon :^)
Yeah, I don't really like the projectile weapons. Last bonkle I bought as a kid was Toa Hewkii, and by that point the whole toyline had transformed (both marketing and the products themselves) into something I really didn't care for. And I was 13 "already" also, so enter the dark ages.
I still firmly hold the belief that 2001 was the best and the most inspired year. Both in worldbuilding and the builds, mostly for the Rahi, but also Toa. Those early days Mata Nui felt so mystical and exotic, not everyone had to be connected via some insane plots and such.

Rhotuka were easily the most fun to launch (that beautiful noise), but Kanoka deserve a mention because I love their mandible-style integration in many sets. The shooters in later years always felt a bit too straightforward and gun-like to be really interesting me, both in design and operation. The notable exception being squids, but those had pretty heavy usability issues in exchange.
>>
The skyblasters in 2008 were actually pretty fun. The firing mechanism in them put a shitload of force on the zamor spheres and those things seriously winged out of the launcher.
>>
>>7309955
I also love Kanoka because they were both collectibles as well as ammo. Not to mention the abundance of recolors and reprints from Slizers and the Tohunga.

Btw fuck the Maori for thinking their culture is too good for the rest of us but they're benefiting from our cultures and technology just fine. Underachieving savages. The lawsuit was the reason bonkle moved away from the islander theme.
>>
>>7309550
I loved most of of these but I gotta go with the Squid launchers. They actually looked cool enough to not throw in a bin. But the rotuka launchers were fucking amazing
>>
>>7310566
I M H O, Bonkle peaked with the Exo-Toa and Bahrag. The Bahrag are so damn complex, yet the gimmick is so inherently fucking neat. Exo-Toa was just a cool way of making the Toa stronger, but it still looked badass on its own, as well.

Considering the first half of 2003 was "lol clones" and then the descent into more articulation and blaster-like gimmicks, this is why 2002 was the neatest year. Some of the later designs were cool, and I think the look of some sets were great after 2002 but the combination of play and neat concepts was what sold this year for me.

>Are they worth going for?
If you want neat display pieces with fun and lengthy builds, absolutely. They look great and somehow feel more complex than they actually are. The gimmick is pretty crap though (Muaka did it better) and this piece that holds their lower teeth tends to crack, so you better have replacements or reorient them so that the cracks aren't visible.
>>
>>7311277
>The gimmick is pretty crap though (Muaka did it better)
This. It feels as if you put uncomfortable amounts of strain on some of the parts when you use it.
>>
>>7311300
The gears in the neck grind/skip too iirc to facilitate the snapping shut of their mouths.
>>
>>7311277
>>7311300
>>7311586
Hmm, I'll debate it. I would like a pair to go up with my Exo-Toa, but they're not necessary. I've heard about the strain of their function, shame it's that way.
>>
>>7311594
I haven't had trouble with the strain on my Bahrag's gears, the thing that bothers me more is how much force you need to activate the gimmick, and that it's almost impossible to hit any target. Especially the chest piece you're supposed to pull out. The two-player game advertised on the back of the box is a sham, it's unplayable. It's a really messy and crude function, I'm surprised they didn't go back to the drawing board with it.
One positive this design does offer is the possibility to pose them with their jaws open. Between this and their somewhat posable limbs, they're not as brick-like as some of the other early Technic models.
>>
As a youngster I was somewhat surprised with the Order/Hunters/Brotherhood idea. They symbolized Good, Neutral, and Evil. Only it didn't play like a triangle because the Dark Hunters and the Brotherhood worked so closely. I think it would had been cooler if Greg had introduced more opposing concepts into the setting and mixed their alignments. From example imagine if Makuta's counter wasn't light, but chaos. An unpredictable factor screwing with his careful plans.
>>
>>7311630
For all we know their design could be as old as the voodoo heads line, where the gimmick could make sense as a way to decapitate toas.
>>

I liked that as well. And I liked that all 3 are pretty grey.
The Order/Hand has mostly good intentions but its methods can be very questionable and a number of its members could switch alliances and be excellent villains.
The Hunters are very much evil and are after themselves, but they can be hired by anyone and they allied with the good guys against Teridax (unlike Nektann), and a few of them have pretty tragic backstories.
The Brotherhood was the closest to being pure evil, but they were created as enforcers and they rebelled for a reason, a mostly selfish one but still.

The system was a fantastic concept but the lack of new moulds and colors and flat out retiring a buttload of shells and detail pieces (some which were only used in one set) to the point that in the end it mostly boiled down to the same few dozen parts was pretty much one of the main factors why it died.
Stuff like the engine shell or Drilldozer's body armor from Hero Factory shouldn't have been an oddity but a springboard into a flood of new shapes and designs.

Biggest issue I found was that using the parts in unique ways to generate aesthetic complexity resulted in a loss of build integrity and ease of play. New armor molds would've helped a bit, but the "legal" building process used in sets was boring and repetitive.

Did some rather crude concept drawings of armors for this >>7282558 thing as I was asked if I had drawing skills in the previous thread. This is as best as I can get for better or worse
These are some of the possible armours that would appear (potentially from almost all eras and some of G2) each set would have different stats and name (For example Hagah armor set would be called Elite armor and gives more protection at the cost of reduced elemental damage or something like that), the proportions are fitted so that the same model could switch the different parts without much issue for customization and combining stats a bit like that Skyrim mod.

Hi /toy/ what are the best Bionicles to get now I have about 2 feet of display space? My parents threw out my Bionicles when we moved, including my Vezon and Fenrak, Axonn, and Toa Ignika (those were my only "big" ones). The only "classic" Bionicle I ever had was a Lerahk Rahkshi. The rest were from the Toa Inika and further, but since I read all of the books in middle school, I'm definitely in the market for older and classic characters like Lariska and Lhikan. It's definitely been a while, but I used to read the Bionicle encyclopedia for fun.

I was thinking of getting Lhikan, Takanuva, Makuta (Teridax), and maybe a Toa Ignika (the one with the Hoverboard). I have a budget of $150, do you think it's possible? Also, are the Exo-Toa good display pieces.

There is also another inherent problem with CCBS: the parts count. The bone pieces look garbage when exposed and by themselves. In order to make the sets look attractive enough, a lot of the parts count had to go into the shells covering up the limbs only, not to mention the gimmicks, weapons, and etc.

I like the idea of CCBS, but the actual execution leaves a lot to be desired. In order for CCBS to look impressive, you'll need a lot of pieces (I've seen a lot of great-looking pure-CCBS Titan/large scale mocs but less so in other areas using only CCBS).

Hey anon, that moc of yours looks great but that will never make it as a set due to budget restrictions.

All of this jacks up the MSRP the Toa sets out of the impulse buy range. The original sets had costed around $7-$12 while the G2 Toa were $15+, decreasing the likelihood of kids buying the sets with their allowance and the likelihood of cash-strapped parents buying them (or parents who do not like wasting money on expensive toys that their kid breaks/or loses interested on after 5 days)

There were so many ways that the LEGO Group fucked up G2 that it's not funny.
>>
>>7326584
And also there's the fact that CCBS doesn't give you the same variety of pieces and colors as standard Lego System does, because there's less Constraction sets overall and most are made out of fewer pieces than System sets sharing the same price point. The CCBS parts library was too shallow to support a dedicated system of its own. Some basic bone and shell pieces weren't even available in most colors.
Again, it was a nice idea in theory to standardize Constraction pieces. But as much as some fans like to defend CCBS by comparing it to System, in practice System and Constraction had to fulfill different demands, so forcing one to be like the other didn't work out. The merging of CCBS with old-school Technic and G1-style pieces seemed like the way to go, but the Constraction themes petered out too soon.
>>
>>7326643
Or rather than focusing on the shells, they could fcoused on the bones more.

Make the the bones wider and thicker, more technic connection holes, more ball joints, more variety in shapes, and aesthetically pleasing details without fake pistons/overdoing with the greebling. Make the bones look good by themselves and better with the shells.

And there we would have a good foundation to add Technic stuff and limbs on to. The large amount of connection points (axles, pins, ball points) would lend itself to more interesting body shapes. Greater compatibility with Technic will help Bionicle to serve as a gateway drug for technic.

The current CCBS bone pieces look too scrawy and ugly (a couple of ball joints on a skinny stick). Not to mention the limiting color palette of black and dark grey that makes it stick out like a sore thumb

And you can thank the Maori "controversy" for that. LEGO commited effort to move the franchise away from it's roots because of it (hence Metru Nui) There's no way they'll be returning it back to it's roots. G2's setting was vague and borrowed from various cultures because of it.
>>

First of all, I do not think that the setting change was due to the Maori, even though that would be easy to say. That controversy happened at the end of 2001 and Bionicle stuck with the tropical island theme up to 2003 instead of dropping it immediately.

Second, I was talking the overall aesthetic of the figures themselves. The skeletal designs and subdued or simple color schemes (G2 looks like a visual mess of trans pieces and mismatching gold).

Nice. From where?

Relative, friend, or from the dying hands of a 23 year old cancer patient?

Knew a someone who managed to get hold of a dead guy's belongings by manipulating the dead guy's parents. In hindsight, that was pretty fucked up.

The technic blasters were based af. I remember accidentally shooting an old lady with one during church when I was 10.
>>
I've been thinking about the G2 skeletons, and the more I thought, the less sense they made.

If they are living skeletons, what did they looked like with flesh covering them?

If they weren't literal living skeletons, then where did they get their name? None of the other beings have skeletons because they are bio-mechanical beings. Human-like skeletons do not exist in this universe.

Was this the result of the new design team, with the majority of them having superficial knowledge of bonkes, hearing "skeletal robots" and taking it literally?

Went to Target recently. The only thing there in terms of constraction were a bunch of CCBS Boba Fett for $20 that nobody wanted.

If TLG wanted to do Star Wars figures, they could have gone the route of brick-built characters using the Mixel joints, instead of a bunch of specialized heads on a generic and unhuman-looking CCBS body.

Yeah I was about to say he was talking strictly aesthetics and not the cultural stuff. The Maori shit has nothing to do with the design team not going for the pistony, frail, alien designs of the Mata era figures.
>>7326701
And I'd say I wasn't disappointed with the more armored human approach at all, I particularly liked the concepts for Umarak for example, and I feel with the way CCBS made the sets look, having them be much more humanoid and less freaky lent itself well in the art I feel. Not to mention with lore such as the Okotans being able to have children, it's less akward to envision them as primarily organic in the torso region with cybernetic bits enveloped over them. I will say the overt Evangelion and mech references were fucking stupid. It just makes me feel like a lot of the design team cared little about the source material and just felt like projecting their own hobbies/interests onto G2 and that still feels wrong to me. Like, the fact that nobody tried to make a coherent story bible and then these dipshits were just making Eva unit Toas and telling the set designers "yeah this will work trust me" just makes my head hurt. That's probably why we ended up with the golden masks, and then in year two MORE IMPORTANT AND POWERUL GOLDEN MASKS OF FUSION because the designers and story team just said fuck it and figured another set of gold masks for the Toa to get was just fine and totally not a major plothole in any way.
>>
>>7327436
Well fuck. Good thing I managed to buy few discounted or used ones lately I guess.
>>
>>7327568
Heck, even the LEGO Ideas Exo Suit looked more bonkle than the stuff in that art book.
>>
It was as if the new design team only had a superficial knowledge on what made Bionicle popular.

Also, they seemed to half-ass the target demographic. Not enough interesting storytelling/media to draw in new fans and not fateful enough to bring back nostalgic old fans.

And God, what happened to the color schemes?

"Yeah since the new kiddos have such short attention spans from video games, let's slap gold and translucent parts everywhere since that it totally what the other action figures manufacturers are doing."
>>

I came across the designer's dA years earier. I remember rocky faces and animish-bayformerish panels like in pic related being his style. He tried to make the Master Hau in his style with the jaw and the top being visually separate pieces with protrusions, but it translated poorly because the mask doesn't have gaps. The Master Pakari worked out better but needs a lick of metal paint on the "exposed" parts.

Welcome to reboots. Companies are particularly anti-risk nowadays, and a new or bold IP is a risk. Rebooting saves the company the copyright money, plus the old fans form an instant fanbase and inject a big dose of money early on. It doesn't rely on winning people over, so it's less of a risk.
Then the company hires people through networking to make the reboot. These people think they are the fucking best geniuses ever. They want to do their vision. Companies hire them to do a job, but they treat it as their vanity project instead and substitute as much of the franchise they didn't care about anyway. That's how reboots retain nothing but the names.

Personally I wouldn't mind it that much if the end result was good. Change isn't bad in theory. But irl it fucking always is.
G2 was particularly bad because all the silver lining was filtered out. The designers had a number of good ideas that were either bastardized or rejected entirely and we wouldn't had known about them without the pdf. Which btw I think it's the team's response to being fucked over. Showing us what they were capable of and we could had gotten if they weren't being sabotaged. The armored humanoid look they wanted to go for was nice and makes me think they initially were expecting access to the Star Wars-exclusive pieces that were addressing some of the issues with CCBS.

Cordak > colossal power gap > Zamor /= Midak > Rhotuka > Mcdonalds Maturan disk throwers (forgot that one) > Disk Launchers > power gap because the last two worked like fucking shit > Squid = Thornax

It feels like such a predictable thing to say but Cordak Blasters were fucking awesome: a good, WORKING, lego rotary gun was amazing and no one should say otherwise.

Midak and Zamor blasters were kinda the same to me, but Zamor blasters are funner to load. Matoran disk throwers felt really satisfying to play with, and the metru disk launchers were okay. Rhotuka are an absolute shit ton of fun to just blast off into fucking space, but they weren't really conducive to having play fights as a kid.

I bloody hated squid and thornax launchers, neither of them fucking worked and thornax launchers especially just looked lame. I always just left the parts in the canisters.

I agree, especially 06.

Set wise it set a bad precedent with the canister sets, but it had unique Matoran builds, the best Titans, Matoran from the original trilogy becoming the new Toa, Villains that weren't just mindless or a horde, arguably the best projectile weapons from G1(Midak is close but wouldn't exist without the Zamor launchers, plus the multiple Zamor colors were another plus), and in my subjective opionion, outside of the Piraka rap, the best marketing since 01.

They also brought up the price of the Toa sets (parts count).

The gears/Technic stuff could have been exclusive to Titan sets. In that way, the Toa could have remained an impulse purchase, while fans still could get gear functions.

Personally, I would had prefer if the designers had used their budget in shells that didn't look boring and more piece like the "uniter piece."
>>
>>7329950
06 and 07's ignition saga was just so fun, the stakes were high and it was interesting. the toa mahri movie, piraka rap, and all that are just so memorable to me. bionicle was at it's peak in those years in my opinion - perhaps not sale wise but story wise and set wise. mahri nui was such a cool setting, the creeps from the deep movie gave us just enough view of it to get a rough idea but never enough to ruin the mystery.

Mahri were way worse than Inika. They didn't even look like a coherent team. Their launchers were also worse. And before you say clone sets, Hordika and Metru are more clone-esque than Inika. Inika had two sets of torsos, feet, and forearms that were mixed and matched amongst the team. Mistika, Hordika, and Mahri are the worst imo. Not in that order or anything, just that the Piraka and Inika are leagues above them. The 07 Matoran were better as were the Barraki, so I'll give you that. But the Toa and Titans were way better in 06 than 07.

This takes me back to the bzper mentality and dynamics. The staff was kinda elitist and it along with it's friends were highly regarded. Mocs meant a lot and theirs wooed everyone. They were big, complex, and had a shitload of pieces exclusive in certain sets. They even had old pieces in bulk. They were classes above your average drone who had limited money and were restricted on what was available in the market. A lot of people thought they'd bought a room's worth of sets and considered them dedicated fans. It was only later that we learned it was all a bunch of fairies. LEGO was sending them free stuff in bulk along with prototype pieces and invitations to VIP events with paid expenses. There were also accusations that TLG was paying for the site's expenses. The staff denied it but I remember seeing an older mention somewhere that LEGO does pay for the site.
Anyway, the inner circle used the free stuff it'd gotten from LEGO to win the other free stuff it'd gotten from LEGO for non-personal use. As such nothing went to the adoring drones who were the reason they were getting free stuff in the first place.
The only way for the normal users to get something free was to fill their protodermis bar. Said freebie was a copper Huna or a mystery price later on. Which meant whatever they had lying around. Protodermis was hard to come by. You had to win a contest, or report news, or buy premium membership (which would give you +2 instead of +1), or leave an exceptional impression. You started off with 5/10 protodermis. If you fell below that then everyone would treat you like a leper. They'd mock you, refuse friendship requests. It never happened to me but I saw others. I was kinda looking down on them too.
>>

Any idea of a G1 Vahi can slot in with the G2 Mask of Time at all?
>>
>>7337984
Yeah, that was the same moc.
Worst thing about it were probably the elbow joints.
Forearms larger than a titan build but attached with a single balljoint - Jesus Christ...

She didn't even just use unreleased pieces, they were prototype pieces in colors that never existed in the retail sets. Pohatus boomarangs in silver come to mind. Man, her winin was such bullshit. You couldn't discern any details from that moc, and the "03 Makuta big big" motif was lazy as hell. The runner ups all easily used parts more efficiently, looked way less like clusterfucks, and all had more unique and original designs and colors. The only reason she won was size, she was a woman, and she was a noteable member of the community.

Which protector is your favorite? Also give me your worst criticisms.
>>
>>7341590

It's hard to decide. PoF had an inventive build. He had his issues, but was nice to see some actual construction going on instead of just snapping armor on a black noodleman. PoH&S was an unimaginative build with an unappealing silhouette, but his colours were gorgeous. Korgot was somewhere in between. A nice colour scheme with a build that involved some building. Most Protectors look like starving kids in Africa. Thin limbs and bloated bellies. But not Korgot. Her build gave her a more robust build and better articulation. Plus black is a colour that looks naturally good and it benefits CCBS sets because the skeleton stands out less.

Also your Korgot a shit because she's not a shortstack. Give her big tits, ass, short limbs, nuva hands and small feet. Use the the SW shoulder shell.
>>
>>7341684

>I will say the overt Evangelion and mech references were fucking stupid. It just makes me feel like a lot of the design team cared little about the source material and just felt like projecting their own hobbies/interests onto G2 and that still feels wrong to me.

You're kinda overeacting here. I can only remember one Eva-ish picture with Tahu firing from the shoulders. Anyway, the designers similarly to Faber. He put his interests in the designs too. Krana are more than similar to the cyborg masks from Mortal Kombat. It's just that it's a different era. Information (and media) travels faster and much of the current generation grew up with anime. Barbatos's design is making me wonder if it's designers were bonklefags. It has a few mata elements.
>>
>>7341938
Faber clearly had a vision for the line. The G2 designers didn't. Although, that could also be ascribed to Lego giving them no say in the story and nothing to go off of since the story bible had fuck all.

Also, the whole Eva deal is a pretty common method called rip-o-matic where you slap together a bunch of already existing stuff at the beginning, when you have done fuckall actual design work, just to get a general feel for the setting and mood that you want to create.

I don't remember whether it was Hero Factory or G2 which for example used an image of Megatron as stand-in in its concept art.

It was actually for the Miramax movies. For some odd reason one of the concept artists went back and retroactively inserted a Megatron into one of the film environments to publish it in his portfolio. Maybe he thought it was a Bionicle?

It's from the online portfolio of Michael Rose, one of the Miramax Trilogy's concept artists, that he published a couple years back. I guess he cobbled together whatever images he had lying around, and accidentally grabbed a Megatron, because as everyone knows, Bayformers are literally Bionicles.
A more important question is, why did they never publish good HD scans of all those hand-painted concept pieces shown in the movie's behind-the-scenes video? They look gorgeous.

>>7349144
>What's the Canon - story about those two?
>Were they close in original story?
All the Barraki were technically allies due to their shared history, but they were hardly close to each other. Pridak hated everyone else cause he was a madman, and Takadox sold out the other Barraki to the Makuta behind their backs. The only one Takadox was sort of close to was Carapar, whom he used as his servant by hypnotizing him cause Takadox was too lazy and weak to come out of his cave and do things on his own.

Want a Krana in a display but can't pick a color. Should I just be that fag that buys a 3d printed one in metal just to have it in a "rare" color? I know the shape is slightly inaccurate but I don't mind it.
>>
Speaking of printfaggotry, I want to make my own toys. Does anyone here know what I should know? I'm mildly concerned about part fitting/joint tightness.

>>7350382

If it's a display piece then go for cool I say. Metallic may be rare, but it's cool in it's own right. Pic related also looks plenty cool to me.

Maybe ask in the customs general, and ask /lg/ if they have any dimensions sheets for Lego parts. Be warned, using Shapeways does pose tolerance issues due to the grain sometimes depending on the plastic used. Can't say about home printed parts.

I'm new to /toy/ and /biog/. How are the miramax movies regarded here? I remember loving them as a kid but that was because I loved bionicle and had no standards. Judging by images and clips and screenshots the CGI has aged terribly and the voice acting and dialogue is kinda cringey. What do you think?
>>
>>7350723
They're shit in most aspects, whether you regard them as films or as parts of Bionicle. But they have admirable qualities, like great music, a lot of creative art design, and making you feel like you're watching an alien world. The mediocrity of The Legend Reborn made them appreciate the older movies a lot more.

Don't forget textures! You have smooth parts int he chest and mask, water style blades in the short and long and thin mahri blades, piston detail in the inika armour and grilled detail from metru and visorak. As well as just beign a giant cluster fuck fo "well this part fits good enough here"
