Why didnt the Gelflings just murder the mystics to beat the skeksis?
>>

Gelflings seem a bit naive and idealistic. I doubt the idea of orchestrating a slaughter of the mystics to defeat the Skeksis would ever be something they'd attempt, even if they conceived of such a plan.

It was forgotten pretty quickly that the Skeksis and Mystics are connected in that way, except by Aughra, who didn't want anyone to know because she used to be close to the Urskeks and wanted them to be healed. Those gelflings who were present to witness the Great Division probably didn't see in the confusion that one Skeksis dies by killing his counterpart.

They have three urethrae but no biological sex. It's suggested that they picked up the idea of gender as an affectation in imitation of the gelflings, and in the EU one of the six who died before the movie identified as female.

>>
>>68308781
You know how /tg/ talks about domesticated house goblins sometimes? That's kind of what gelflings were. For most of the Alliance of the Crystal they were bred and cultivated by the Skeksis to be courtiers, because an empire of less than 20 members isn't much of an empire at all, and their only alternatives were podlings and semi-intelligent animals.

Better question:

Why don't the Mystics kill themselves to prevent the Skeksis from hurting the innocent?
>>
>>68314838
They didn’t get any ambition or drive out of the deal that linked them. Ambition and Drive were completely given to the Skeksis.
>>
>>68314877
What a horrible existence, to be condemned to be a hippy-dippy stoner by the very metaphysic fuckup that spawned you.

So far Rian, Deet and the other one haven't even told anyone they have that connection, and they might not fully understand it. Plus the Mystics are already gone. Maybe once they tell other people (if they do) someone will suggest killing the Mystics, but until then we can't say.
>>
>>68314906
They clearly do give a shit. They're just not motivated to action.
>>
>>68313437
Podlings aren't actually that bad, but Gelfling are much longer lived and more easily brainwashed (being so close to Thra and by extention the Crystal).

Podlings are small tempermental and willful by nature (closest creatures to probably have freewill) everything else is tied up in threads of destiny and the like.
>>
>>68314877
Yes. Please explain what they are, and why they split? Never understand that part of the movie
(Haven't finished the series yet either)
>>
>>68302952
I used skeksis as inspiration for a villain once. He was a senile lich who forgot most of his magic but commanded so many minions and resources no one could oppose him, mostly because no one could actually get to him. He lived in a flying palace above a flying city above a shantytown metropolis where slaves worked to feed the aristocrats living up above. If the slaves rebelled, he'd fire a doom laser from the palace, but he'd fire through the city below, so the nobility ruthlessly stamped out resistance because they were terrified he'd kill them to kill the rebels below them.

>>
>>68314838
The drive to act isn't part of their makeup, all that stayed with the skeksis. They also have all the patience, of which the skeksis have none. Combined, it means they're almost incapable of acting at all.
>>
>>68315012
Podlings are cool as fuck. Party all the time, give no shits about anything, regular sponge baths from Gelfling chicks, what's not to love?
>>
>>68315023
I don't know how they split exactly, but each half has all of certain personality traits. Ambition but no patience, aggression but no compassion, cruelty but no mercy, etc and vice versa. The skeksis were incapable of being anything but what they are.
>>
>>68315096
The Hunter wasn't out for genocide, he was an unstoppable killing machine that chose his targets for their merit. Had he wanted just a body count, he'd get it. The Garthim are a mindless army of killers, they do nothing but what they're told, so when ordered to genocide, they would.

The World of the Dark Crystal is a really stylish companion book released with the movie that explains a lot of important shit.

Long story short, the Urskeks came to Thra from another world two Great Conjunctions ago because they were exiled for some sin they really don't want to talk about. They built a castle and a network of mirrors around the Crystal for the purpose of removing every trait they thought was sinful, so they could redeem themselves and return home. But their black-and-white thinking was fundamentally flawed, and instead of being burned away, the parts of themselved they wanted to get rid of took on a life of their own and took over Thra, and their "purified" selves were crippled from the loss of the kind of energy that both good and evil springs from.

So the Skeksis are kind of like the Jungian concept of the shadow: the true parts of the self that get excluded from one's self-concept, a source of creativity if understood and embraced, but something that causes more and more bad behavior the more it is denied and repressed.

The audiobook is here: https://youtu.be/3g5iM-UYqi0

Some shit in the series I won't spoil (and possibly the Gollum-like state of the Chamberlain in the movie) suggests that they can find at least a substitute for a small part of what they lost through being forced to interact with other races as equals.

I love how the series makes the movie better. You can really appreciate the Chamberlain's desperation to get back in the castle after you see how accustomed he is to being able to manipulate people, then some Gelfing thot comes along and fucks everything up right when he almost had the shard.

>>
>>68303849
I'm looking forward to how the show will depict skekUng, who's apparently good enough in a fight to be promoted to the new general, Garthim master and later emperor. skekMal was wild and indipendant, but skekUng is supposedly only second to the emperor in personal strength.

Very hard to hit bowl with all three. I usually just clench and stop flow for a second, adjust, then it's back to one proper combined. But Skeksis are definitely foul bachelors so why care about the mess?

I don't think they were the last two gelflings. I mean, each one was wrong before about being the only one; there were probably some more out there.

In the comic based on the sequel that died in preproduction, most of the gelflings do not act like they're direct descendants of Jen and Kira. I mean, a lot of things in that comic suck, but I'm going to cite it anyway.

Headcanon is that the mystic was exiled for being sick of his peers' shit. The Heretic was originally the Conqueror, and was charged with expanding the Skeksis domain through, well, conquest. Considering his urRu counterpart is called the Wanderer I'd imagine he'd be one of the few of them who ventured out of the Valley of the Mystics. In fact, between the Heretic being driven out and skekVar being killed by the Chamberlain over a minor slight and skekUng's promotion it seems like the role of military leader in Skeksis society is a fairly chaotic one.

(mod' from Tengu PF.v1)

>Skeksis Racial Traits
>+2 Strength, +2 Intelligence, –2 Constitution: Skeksis are brutal yet thoughful, but they are a step away from being undead.

>Skeksis are humanoids with the Outsider subtype.

>Medium: Skeksis are Medium creatures and receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.

>Normal Speed: Skeksis have a base speed of 30 feet.

>Senses: Skeksis have low-light vision.

>Bastards: Skeksis gain a +2 racial bonus on Bluff and Intimidation checks.

>Old Blood: Knowledge: Nobility and Knowledge: History are class skills.

>Unnatural Lives: the Skesis are obessesed with living longer than is natural, and will take any measure to stay alive. they have a +4 bonus to all Death related saves.

>Swordtrained: Skeksis were familiar since their creation with violence, and as a result are automatically proficient with swordlike weapons.

>Natural Weapon: A Skeksis has a bite attack that deals 1d3 points of damage. (or should it be claws?)

>Languages: Skeksis begin play speaking Common and Skeksi. Skeksi with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except for secret languages, such as Druidic).
>>
>>68330372
>Minor Slight
The general took the Chamberlains place as consort to the Emperor. Thats hardly a minor slight.
>>
>>68333394
thoughtful isn't the word i'd use. cunning might be closer.

>str bonus, con penalty. proficient with all swords, even weird exotics

Welp, I feel like Spring Attack is obligatory for a martial here. Some kind of two-handing rogue mayhaps? My hit and run mallet terrorizer build would do nicely, the only issue is it specializes in nonlethal and fear, not murder.

alternately you compensate for the low hp with a fuckton of ac.
OR you go Barb, for the big HD and DR.
>>

They would look like good pathfinder Magus rather, considering proficency with all sword weapons means they get the best swords in the game. Intimidate and Bluff wont do much, but who needs either when your chopping up and shocking the geflings.

They seem like they can take a hell of a lot more punishment than the other races of Thra.

The problem is that they shouldn't be a PC race at all, they're more like outsiders or something.

Imo, skeksis should be more like Drider. +4 to all stats with a +6 to strength and Con specifically. Considering it took two of the best gefling fighters to even manage to fight on even terms with one of their best hunters (And they still lost). They should get big penalties for being deprived of essence though.

Whatever they get, they also need a negative to their wisdom. They're deviously intelligent, but good god are they dipshits sometimes.
They started genociding their prime source of immortality before the prophecy was even spoken. The only one who seemingly had the sense to warn against it got ignored AND kicked out of musical chairs.
>>
>>68335031
Because they are impatient, and while obssesed with immortality, they can't for their lives calculate on the long run. The deal Seladon offered them, despicable as it is, was extremely good for them, but the arrogante of the emperor and his short-sightness made him say no to each of her proposals (this is one of my favourite scenes, its so heartbreaking).

SkekTek is literally the reason everything goes wrong. If not for him there would be no Garthim, and no essence.
>>
>>68335434
He wouldn't have done anything about that if the Chamberlain hadn't planted the ideas in his head. Hell, SkekTek was devastated when he accidentally caused the Dark Crystal to start draining life and was trying to think of a way to fix it.
>>
>>68332821
Could he be the most evil when he shows a bit of regret/shame when she reminds him they used to be friends?
He even has a little animal he considers a friend that the Emperor starts strangling the little thing the Scientists says a random number as soon as possible so the Emperor stops strangling it and after the Emperor leaves, the Scientistnimal in his gage and tells it that "all is well".

He may be a mad scientist but he doesn't seem like such a cunt when compared to other Skeksis

One of the main reasons the Skeksis are dying because of their exposure to the Darkening, the Emperor being the furthest along of them. The whole point is that their pursuit of power is destroying them. Garthim Master/second General is extremely physically capable like the Hunter and it's presumable that the Mariner is away from the Crystal a lot, while the Slavemaster is a shuffling crippled spiteful little shit in the movie.

This is the problem with being an incomplete being. The Skeksis and the urRu both have at least most of the intelligence of the urSkeks but the urRu have that knowledge without any ambition or drive to save them from their infinite patience paralyzing them and condemning them to centuries alone with their thoughts, unable to influence the world around them to fix what the urSkeks broke.

The Skeksis have power and intelligence without much/any capacity for moderation, patience, or self-reflection; even SkekSil, the most cautious and pragmatic of the bunch most of the time, can be hasty and impulsive, like when he badly underestimated SkekUng and went forward with the Trial By Stone despite the fact the contest was obviously in SkekUng's favor.

There's no telling what their "natural" lifespans are, since their existence isn't natural to begin with. The Urskeks seem to be immortal, as they spend a whole thousand trine on Thra without any noticeable changes (we also don't know exactly how long a trine is, but that's another story.) It could be that the Skeksis are only degrading because of the Darkening and the Uruu are only degrading because the Skeksis are.
