If offered, do you think you'd actually be willing to live in an "urban unease" situation? Nothing overtly weird, but just the general feeling that something is really wrong, creepy tenants and perhaps occasional sighting of something that really really shouldn't exist.

How cheap would the rent have to be for you to say yes?
>>
>>68246376
I would have jumped at the chance a decade ago (was living with hallucinations anyways), but now you couldn't pay me enough to reside in such a place.
>>
>>68246376
>How cheap would the rent have to be for you to say yes?
50-100$ a month.
>>
>>68246376

Free. Literally free. If there's internet (even wifi), then I'm game. Seriously.

But only if I'm allowed to leave whenever I want. If i'd have to sign a lease promising not to leave for like a year or something really bad might happen, then I'd have to have some kind of guarantee of my safety (even though there's no such thing).

Hell... I might consider $50 a month rent actually.
>>
>>68246212
It's giving them a 'choice'. And considering the wording seems to imply it just kinda manifested the sub-basement, it probably isn't lying when it says it'll come up there.

Henderson himself admitted shortly after he made his first post about Good Boy that it's not actually a dog. Hell, even in that post its whole modus operandi is to go around waiting at people's doors and hoping they're stupid enough to let it in.

The guy sperging about it is just a retarded shitposters who wanted to cause drama.

I'm renting a pretty weird place with three friends. Half abandonned theater, used to be a place where used cars where stored before being shipped to Africa.

One of the rooms in the abandonned part of the building is full of various clothing items left there by drama students who where living there before us. Under all the clothing is some strange stuff belonging to even older residents: letters, photos, a couple of them going back to maybe 20 or 30 years ago, an old VCR, schoolbooks and children toys... bits and pieces of the lives of other people.
There's a makeshift hanged mannequin in the stairwell to the very, very large basement.
Some of the people who rented before us where art students and they and their friends drew a lot of weird and creepy graffitis and murals on the basement walls.

We pay about 300 bucks each, which is okay for our city (almost the cheapest you can get through legal means), but we'd like to leave because the neighborhood is pretty bad and the building is basically falling apart.

The Magnus Archives, which was mentioned in the last thread.
HooH, a webseries on YouTube that has moved away from the urban horror-ish setting and has gotten a more defined story. I would recommend watching the older videos. HooH was used by the creator as a way to improve his editing skill while he worked on his main series, soursalt

The Flesh is easily the freakiest. Body horror + fear of being cut up and slaughtered.
I'm not totally caught up, but The Eye seems almost benign, obviously that's probably just because of protagonist vision, but it's still the only one that doesn't seem to be actively hurting people for no reason.

I wish I wasn't too brainlet to listen to podcasts, if I don't concetrate all the sound just goes straight in one ear and out the other, and I can't concetrate for longer than like 10 minutes
>>
>>68267702
I know what you mean. If I'm not doing certain relatively brainless tasks I can't listen to them. My go to task is driving, but I drive 4-6 hours a day for work, so I get plenty of time for it. Other than that, I don't really have anything else I do regularly that can both zone out enough to listen but am still active enough to not get physically fidgety/get distracted by normiebook or something.
>>
>>68260176
I didn't even see the thread. It really does an amazing job with just audio for providing a great urban-horror feel.

>>68265684
I would definitely fall for the Forsaken, but I find the Web very terrifying. "A Guest for Mr Spider" is one of my favorite episodes.
>>
>>68245276
Imagine ruining your piece with such invasive watermarks
>>
>>68267702
>>68267858
Y'all need to work on your attention spans. Though if getting distracted because you're more engaged in something else that's understandable. For me podcasts can really brighten a monotonous task like doing dishes, cleaning the house, driving for long periods etc, I also love then while at the gym though they can affect the flow of a workout.
It wouldn't even be bad to just sit down and devote some time to just listening, hell people used to do that all the time with radio shows back in the day, grab a snack get comfy and enjoy some theater of the mind.
>>
>>68269263
the problem with listening to podcasts while doing stuff is that I don't really have enough stuff to listen to a single recording in one "sitting". I live alone and try do clean up regularly so all those motonous things don't really take more than 30-40 minutes, while most podcasts last about an hour.

>"A Guest for Mr Spider"
Oh good pick. I'm personally a fan of the Daedalus episodes. Uniting modern space flight and the supernatural is too good for me.
"The Piper" is what hooked me on the series though. I'm fascinated by WW1 and for once a story with supernatural elements actually felt like it fit while taking the reality of the war as seriously as it should. Plus it's early enough in the series, and The Slaughter doesn't get much screen time even later that it still feels mysterious even now.
>>
>>68265684
The Stranger is probably the fuckiest and one of the most freaky, followed up by Choke and the Falling Titan.

I'd probably end up succumbing to the Eye or the Lonely, since I check off a number of things they'd enjoy in a servant.

>>68266753
The Eye is just more passive than its kin, but it's not less evil. There's one episode detailing a statement where a suspected servant of it stalked and drove someone into insanity from its ever-present observation, and Magnus himself became an amoral monster who sacrificed people without hesitation once it corrupted him enough.

Pretty much the entire plot so far has been the Beholding trying to build up towards its own Ritual of the Watcher's Crown, whilst sabotaging any other Power trying to claim the universe for their own.

>>
>>68271452
>>68271431
Why is a rope of bedsheets stretching into darkness... So vaguely unsettling?
>>
>>68277822
I love the fact that it doesn't feel the need to do a ritual. The world itself is it's playground. There is an episode in season 3 called "Cracked Foundations" focusing on the Spider that I absolutely love.

>>68273659
I'm trying to remember which particular episode it was that got me hooked, but I think it was "Do Not Open" and "Dreamer" which really sucked me in. "Cheating Death" from season 2 is one of my favorite episodes.
>>
>>68278489
The End also lacks a ritual. Because it's Death. Everything comes to it when the time comes.

The Magnus Archives is a world where evil has already won. Some of the dark forces just want to cement that victory even more by making the universe a part of them.
>>
>>68277844
Is there any system specially suited for playing a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game in? Come to think of it there isn't really much special that the game would need, just basic conflict resolution and maybe some detailed survival rules, but I'm betting someone made something at some point.

"Haha dude I'm you lol I'm you do you get it haha."
>>
>>68278760
>where evil has already won.
I wouldn't go that far. "Winning" doesn't seem to be in anyone's interest but the followers. It's implied Gertrude is favored by The Lightless Flame even if she fucked two of their rituals because she's been destroying shit for years. The powers ARE our fears and so are deeply baked into our world. But so is death in a non-supernatural sense. Bad things happen, whether or not theres a spooky force behind it. Getting a ritual off might be a type of winning but I get the feeling that it would end badly for the powers as well, hence the seeming hesitation over one succeeding.

Discussing the idea "what if there was a 'human-friendly' lovecraftian horror", while maintaining the sense of 'not human':

The "pet" route: You occasionally wake up to find a dead cow or pig placed on your doorstep.

The "ant colony" route: I tried to give them sugar cubes. But I don't think they could use the sugar cubes. Next time I will try using grape jelly.

The aquarium: Starving hobos find the broken and mutilated carcasses of animals at their feet, adorned with a heap of various soft plant matter, most of which is edible. A man lost and wandering comes across a few 'modern' buildings... or what modern buildings would look like if made out of play-dough bedrock, deformed (or formed in too perfectly angular ways) with some functional bits just fine but others nothing more than facades. Staying in the 'hotel', silent and empty as it is, might be good and again there's something like food to be found, but...

The 'benevolent god' route: In essence, random miracles would occur but they would be hard to accept since they would have an ignorant, hackish, trial-and-error sort of quality where you get not exactly what you need by providence but what something, who doesn't really understand, believes you might want.

You could also have a lovecraftian entity that sort of understands humanity, but only the surface elements.

>Your car breaks down. Next day you find out that the engine has been replaced by an organic... thing that gives you a headache if you try to look at it too closely. The car runs better than before, but you start hallucinating if you stay inside too long.

>You get attacked by a wild animal and pass out. When you wake up, your wounds have been stitched and you feel pretty good(considering you were seriously injured earlier), but occasionally you can feel something squirming inside your flesh.

>You're running late on bills and getting really stressed about it. One day when you come home from work, you find a big pile of money on the kitchen table. It's in various currencies ranging from Roman denarii to ones that don't even exist yet.
>>
>>68246376
For me it wouldn't be a matter of rent (well, that'd be important too, just secondary), but of possibilities. Are any of the mentioned things a danger/threat? Do you I have to be more worried about my safety, privacy, health and general wellbeing than I am right now? Can I interact with any and ll of the above in a peaceful fashion to learn various eldritch secrets?

A lot depends on the answers to those and how far in the 'yes/no' zone each answer goes.
>>
>>68282071
Kinda this >>68282557 but in relation to basic concepts governing out peceptions, making it work in very roundabout way or with questionable morality.

Absolutely random things happening, like you try to put on a shoe and a venomous spider crawls out of it. You dispatch the spider and wonder what it is about. Turns out that the eldritch abomination manipulated reality, wanted you to be spooked by the spider so 30 years from now you'll tell your kid that such thing can happen which in turn will make it study first aid in case of venomous bite so when his kid will get bitten he'll know what to do to save their life. Thus the entity is helping you save your future grandkids.

You're worried about random hooligans stealing your vegetables, since then various buildings in the area catch fire, there are dead. Local authorities to invest in CCTVs and whatnot to prevent further acts of arson, people whod' steal your vegs move to less secure locations.

That or your vegs become mutated and are a deadly toxin/make worms eggs of are inside chew through guts of people who eat your vegs without your tacit permission or without you giving those vegs away yourself.

You hope to one day date a girl of particular looks/traits. Now seemingly any girl interested in you will have an accident or horrible nightmares turning her away or no female can ever muster any interest toward you unless she's having the traits you look for. alternatively, random victim of psychotic break, who after going through it and completely redesigining their personality in ways including the traits you look for starts to be drawn toward you in somewhat obsessive way.

I feel your pain, and so does the father of many limbs.

Alternatively:
YOU are going through a severe psychotic episode that completely redefines your preferences and tastes so you will pursue a rather suspicious, creepy girl of eldritch abomination's choosing. After all, it's 'humanity friendly', not just 'you friendly', and other people, including certain ugly girl, deserve to be happy as well.

The Powers don't want certain Powers to win because that means those Powers literally get booted out of the universe over the winning Power and its allies. It's why the Spiral, Web and Eye came together as they did to keep the Stranger from completing the Unknowing, because everything NOT closely related to the Stranger would be rendered irrelevant upon its victory (so everything not the Lightless Flame). It's also why they're opposing Extinction so heavily.

The Powers are always infighting and sabotaging each other, because once a ritual is completed, everything else but that Power and those that align closely with it get the shaft.

On the subject of more urban-horror media, specifically youtube channels, I would also recommend "Aspicio Omniam". https://youtu.be/SbwTMSV_8f8 is a great example of what they do.

"Jack Torrance" is another channel that has an urban-horror feel, but has a more focused plotline on ghosts, curses, etc. But the plotline is very loose as far as I'm aware. I stopped following the plot a while ago, so I have no idea what direction it's going.

"Local 58" is a similar vein, but I'm unsure if it fits the urban-horror feel.

So for my campaign I'm having a big skyscraper construction lot that is sort of acting as a lightning rod for surrounding ambient energies, causing unnatural phenomenon to happen around it (People experiencing missing time while in the rising buildings shadows, poltergeist activity, people able to pick up intelligent but indecipherable speech from their fillings culminating in Exploding Head Syndrome, and rarely on the extreme end things like spontaneous combustion, or even manifestation of creatures or local myths that dont otherwise exist).
There is a reason for this behavior and it is by design, and I want to sort of have it begin to show up more and more in the background to see if the players will be able to finger it, but what is a good way to make it pay off without having it seem too corny or ridiculous?

Yes. It is.
Essentially the building, when completed, is going to act as the tool for a ritual that is the end game for a persons life long mission. However the specific plans, as well as some rites done over the materials before they are sent to the site, are causing the half finished building to accumulate and randomly discharge magic as its not finished or refined. The schemer either doesn't know or doesn't particularly care at this point.

Most of these are poorly done. > Memory losses in the area are not reported, although PCs may stumble upon a person standing in front of the building staring at it, trying to figure out when or why she came here

> At daytime the building is OK, at night though people feel air going viscous and time going in slow-motion when they are particularly close to the building
> Mythical creatures appear about once a month, and only a couple of them were reported by local yellow press, the rest only seen by hobbos and drunks

What's the life long mission? Summoning? Empowerment? Evolution? Connection? Effecting just him or more?

>the shadow cast by the building is more present than it should be, affecting a wider area, darker, at odd times. Otherwise just a normal shadow
>the things summoned by the building aren't fully real and can't actually effect reality (yet), they certainly give people a start when they see them though. Traffic accidents and tickets for drunkenness or drugs are high in the area
>as with a lot of big projects there is a small group of protesters that turn up from time to time. They seem oddly desperate and don't have any specific complaints l, just that "it" is wrong.
>VERY high worker turnaround. They are all dodgy about why they quit. When pressed stories range from bad dreams to getting lost for hours somehow, accidents to catching managers doing some shady stuff
>crows, cats or some other thematic animal haunt the site in large numbers. They're normal besides their numbers. Dogs or other birds or something else appropriate won't go near the place
>a small shrine sits at the front gate. Similar to the pop up ones from tragedies. Candles and pictures and notes are there. If anyone follows up all the people from them are still fine. No one sees who leaves things at the shrine

>What's the life long mission? Summoning? Empowerment? Evolution? Connection? Effecting just him or more?
Evolution and or escape. Essentially in the core setting the world is on a timer, if 332 people ascend to a godly status the cosmic odometer tips over and the universe is made in the vision of the for like beings that ascended. No one knows how many make up the invisible clergy, and people can ascend randomly in very rare cases. This system has happened before and will happen again in the new world.
The idea is that this wealthy mage is looking to game the system, and essentially use a major magic ritual to launch himself into the realm of the gods as a way to exist permanently outside the eternal cycle.
But thanks for the suggestions. Those are all real good.

>some things in the area become immutable and unchanging. A coin on the ground is stuck, and while it can be picked up, it'll find its way back to that spot somehow, occasionally to the ill fortune of those who picked it up (pick up the coin and a few seconds later get hit by a truck, the coin rolling out of your hand back to the exact spot it was or something else just as contrived)
>a street preacher talking about the end times in the area is somehow gaining an actual following. He seems oddly compelling, like he's actually seen this happen before

Instead of being physically unique, Modern Holden (Molden) is very average. Average intellect, average strength, average eloquence and charisma. The only thing that makes him unique is that every so often he works into his schedule a murder. He has reasons for why he does what he does, why he kills who he kills in what manner and when. But he always gives at two, and leaves his listener to discern which is truth and which is a lie.

He is spontaneity. Coincidence. Events outside of your control. Hell! Outside of your awareness.

There was a short film or show I saw once that did something like that. It was pitched as kind of light and teen friendly (like an Are You Afraid Of The Dark or other Twilight Zone ripoff) but it had implications. Can't remember what it was called.
Basic premise was this girl on a farm discovers a bottomless hole out back somewhere, and starts communicating with something down below. Like she'll send down a sandwich in a basket on a rope, and then when she pulls it up there's a note like "thank you for this food" with a present, like jewelry or something. This goes on for a while. And then her crazy father finds out about it, assumes The Things are aliens / communists / etc and vows to destroy them, grabs a rope, his shotgun and a headlamp and spelunks down in to the abyss. And then when the girl pulls the rope back up there's his empty clothes with a note that says "Thank You for this food" and another present.

I've never seen it done, but I'd like to see one where the help is objectively helpful with no weird strings or fuck ups, but completely indiscriminate in its scale or morality. Some psychopath wishes to be able to kill his neighbour without being caught, and now he can kill anybody and the police for no reason can't stop him. Just completely ignore him. Or a girl wishes to be the smartest in her class and is suddenly flooded with all human knowledge.
The people getting their wishes granted might be happy about it, but the people around them would have been better off without the intervention. Like a sideways cape comic

This gives me Deathnote vibes...but maybe without the convoluted mental chess match it becomes at the end.

Let's play a game. Use the first generator to get the physical manifestation of the entity, and the second for the name. Then tell us if you survive the encounter.

I live in a southern european working class neighborhood, full of gyppos, moors and niggers. And it was even built over an old moorish cemetery, so the ghosts are not a big deal
I would sign in a heartbeat, at least I could sleep without gyppos playing ''music'' at 2 in the morning
Fuck my gyppo neighbor btw, I hope the next time his associates come to shot him they have luck or, at least, accuracy

I feel like it should also be pointed out that just by sheer statistical probability, the Powers are *going* to win. It's not a matter of if, more than it is a matter of when. There's no way to prevent all of the active Rituals, or stop all of their servants from building up the strength towards said Rituals. All it takes is one fuckup and one good day for any one of the Powers for all reality to suffer a fate worse than death. That's it.

The Magnus Archives is an immensely fucked up setting becuase it's all slated towards a completely final, and inevitable bad end.

At least in Real Life, we don't have to worry about completely invincible cosmic horrors making the universe into their onahole suddnely and without any warning.

Ever heard of the Fengdu ghost city? It's a huge city complex in china that's mostly abandoned. This is called the bridge of helplessness. All over the city there's gravestones and statues, rumours hold that the statues follow you with their eyes, and that if you overstay your welcome you'll never return.

And yet they haven't. We know from the Archives that, at minimum, The Eye, Death and The Dark have been active since ancient times, and they've never gotten a ritual off. The Web doesn't even want to.
I would go as far as to suggest that the rituals might not actually do what the followers think. They'd help the Powers, certainly, but I have some doubts they are as powerful as they seem. Especially since we know that part of the ritual is affected by the presence of fear in the regular population as well.
Hell, TWO world wars and the best The Slaughter managed was a failed killing of a bunch of POWs? Seems like it wasn't really trying desu

Fairly sure.

>>68336902
The Dark very nearly completed its ritual, which from what we saw resulted in a reality where everything and everyone was incapable of ever dying and all things became pitch black. It was stopped at pretty much the last second, but we have a vague idea as to what would happen if the ritual had actually succeeded.

The Web and End don't really NEED rituals either, since the world is already firmly in their grip. If the Eye emerges victorious with the Watcher's Crown, then the Mother of Puppets would probably gain more dominion over the world, but it already likes it just as it is and has no incentive to complete a ritual of its own. And Terminus is Death. Everything comes to it eventually, giving it a nice fat slice of the pie right from the word go.

>Hell, TWO world wars and the best The Slaughter managed was a failed killing of a bunch of POWs? Seems like it wasn't really trying desu
The Risen War seemingly requires active self-destruction to become complete. And in a time like the periods in which the World Wars went down, I wouldn't be surprised if every Power was moving pieces to try and gain an upper hand against any of the other 14.

Jesus... that exit just got fucking dabbed on.

> It was stopped at pretty much the last second
But we don't know what stopped it. The Dark thinks it was Gertrude but it sounds like she was dead. It might have just self destructed, the fear of The Dark or darkmatter not being strong enough. And a devotee is the last person you should ask if you want to get the realistic projections on what it could actually achieve.
There is nothing to suggest any of the followers have any idea how best to put a ritual on. Hence why a bunch of them keep trying to summon Avatars, who seem just as clueless. Micheal/Helen certainly don't seem to know what they should be doing and they seem like the closest one to their patron.

I'm inclined to believe that all the Powers and their rituals are just more of the status quo. They might cause some jockeying in the cosmic hierarchy, The Dark suddenly becoming more prevalent than The Falling Titan in a cultural sense, but there is nothing to suggest they have the power to plunge the world into hell like their followers think.

No, we just have to worry about ordinary existential horrors like our planet being blasted to shit by an impact suddenly and without warning, or having our entire atmosphere cooked off in an instant by a gamma ray burst without warning, or dropping out of a false vacuum state causing all matter to come apart on a subatomic level, or being bumped in to by a strange quark and having the whole planet convert to goo without warning. It's probably fine.
