Browsing these threads late at night is bad for me bros.
As for surreal/urban horror goes, I'm pretty fucking excited for the upcoming adaptation of uzumaki.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDEQyK5ZH-E

That fucking music is perfect for something by junji ito.

unlike every other adaptation of something by ito, this looks to actually have some people of talent behind it too. The director has done some fucking great shit (like mushishi) and I've never heard of this musician before now (apparently he did music for some recent film called hereditary?) but this guy captures the tone of ito's works perfectly.
And it isn't fucking animated by DEEN, thank christ.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good game system to play this flavor of uncanny horror? The two horror systems that come to mind, Vampire the Masquerade and Call of Cthulhu, both feel a little too direct and on-the-nose.

There is probably a powered by the apocalypse system you could use. But that is mostly just my default answer for anything these days.

I'm cautiously optimistic about it, the do show off a bit of actual animation there, and it looks normal, and fluid enough.
Not sure how much of it will actually be animated in the standard fashion vs the weird kind of distorting existing stills of his manga though.

The music is god tier.
The animation, you know, THE ACTUAL FUCKING POINT looks barebones at best, and the pretentious decission to make it black and white proves it's going to be garbage, but popular as fuck.
>>
>>68127831
The last Junji Ito adaptation was complete and utter dogshit because not only did it stray from the original style too heavily, it was the kind of shit that made Berserk 2016 look passable.

The Uzumaki thing, just from the preview, is light years ahead of that shit. And keeping the black and white style of the original story probably helps.
>>
>>68127744
That does not calm me, anon.
>>
>>68127636
I mean, that's basically what that story is anyhow.
>>
>>68127831
I think it's best to keep it black and white. Doing it in color would kind of..cheapen it almost? I dunno how to put it. It's not as impactful in full color. I can put together what it looks like in my head which just makes the horror all the more effective: It's making me imagine the creature and situation while I see it.

>There exist some substances that are not native to our reality and physics, but rather have some smear or taint that marks them of a sort of 'alternative' substance, that integrated into our reality when forced in by mistake in formative times and ultragravity bleed equations.

>We know many examples of these substances and elements, such as gold and neon, or coffee and alcohol (thus the fond term 'spirits'). Often things we covet to have or ingest even if it means violence.

>LSD is a recent non-native synthetic that allows one to organically experience and *become* the dysphoria these substances cause for existence at the base level. Although their existence in our reality was never intended or meant to be possible, they're stable by now and subject to entropy. We are still finding more and more of these conceptual 'alien' substance combinations, and discover often that they are addictive, not because of just some intrinsic chemical nature, but because that very nature is not native and thus triggers a deep need and desire to experience the edge of the otherworldly provided that many organics are so needing of.

>This often leads to self-destruction however. Or the lust to use non-native substances from realities black, where powers like Uranium crept in down from a nuclear throne to bring the gift of final fire to the prisoners of a violent existence.

i think it's poor form to actually make an image surreal. Just find an image that should be completely normal and tell your players that there is something wrong with it. They'll point out the odd shadows or the misproportioned doorways or whatever their mind comes up with and you can play off of that.

Telling your players that something is wrong when nothing is might be one of my favorite things to do with modern horror

Spirits of places, objects, elements, abstract concepts and ets. Some have their own astral kingdoms.

Sapient rats in the subway.

Hobos

People living or working in places of dimensional, temporal and other anomalies, such as squatters, who find ways to settle into recently demolished or unbilded (like a Gaudi skyscraper in New York) houses. This lifestyle leaves its mark.

Refugees, migrants and just random people from other worlds

Never have I enjoyed a series so much, only for it to get so far up it's own ass it became unenjoyable. I'm not even mad about how gay it is, I just want them to stop talking about it. Also going back to weird stories instead of being character driven would be nice.

120 episodes into The Magnus Archives and its still essentially the same format. How did Nightvale manage to fuck up so bad?

Anthrophages would probably be organised similarly to paedophiles. When you're preying on human beings it's not good to bunch up in one area, so they'd affiliate loosely on line but put a lot of emphasis on not talking in ways that might get them caught. There would be various codewords and dogwhistles for distinguishing each other from the herd.

The parasitic extradimensional insects that colonise humans at the base of the brainstem, on the other hand, would probably disguise their organisation as a straight-laced fundamentalist Christian or Mormon group.

I've made an occult rumour for Unknown Armies that might give you an idea for one such society.

So, there's that rich businessman, his surname is King. Very influential in this city, also is rumoured to be the boss of the local mafia. He has a young daughter, sweet sixteen. Lately she was kidnapped. The kidnappers are a gang from somewhere in China that recently appeared in the city, Red Dragon is their name. The boss of that gang, Mr. Long, is weird. They say he's well over 80 years old, but he looks not older than 40.

The Magnus Archives focuses Almsot entirely on how the characters are actually dealing with relaity-ending cosmic horrors that are capable of casual corruption, and the consequences of fighting such things. Knightdale didn't bother going full cosmic horror until the Smiling God, and by that point, it was already starting to fizzle out. Up until then, it was just random and disjointed stuff, with the main focus being the narrator to begin with, before it transitioned to his "relationships" when they clearly started running out of actual plot hooks to use.
>>
>>68174897
It's the ultimate mindfuck. Is it real? did whatever compromised them alter the other symbols? Have they been changed to better suit its needs? Nothing erases any hope of being informed like "symbols have been compromised"

Simply ridiculously large spikes. I had nightmares of those. Honeylocust I think they're called. That image reminds me of that.

DRYH is one of my favourite one shot systems. It has a lot of failings, namely being you cannot play it outside of its built in setting and the freeform nature of Madness powers makes some powers or creative players unreasonably powerful and others near useless, plus its unplayable in large groups (it can handle a maximum of three players and that's if you're good at juggling spotlights).

That all being said it's a lot of fun. The surreal City is a great backdrop and it's basically impossible to build a character without a good hook. Plus the Madness powers, when they're strong but don't trivialize things are great.

Excellent, the Man in the Fancy Suit was mine, but the thread took a turn and he seemed to lack teeth if everyone could safely reject his offers. That's definitely a Russian elevator (or, may be, other post-Soviet remnant of 1970-80-s era). And Russian buildings of those times do look spooky now. I used to rent a flat in a house where every storey in the stairwell looked like a level from Silent Hill, and each looked distinct. Now I live in a somewhat less spooky house, but there are still enough places where I could take spooky photos. Buttons in the elevator are not that messed-up, but it still looks eerie.
