I don't own the game at all, but I love this era of BattleTech so much I want to buy in. Seriously considering getting the 150 dollar level, but not sure what to throw in as an addon. Are these clan packs going to be widely available post kickstarter? I imagine the prices won't be the same, but I want all of them and just not sure if I can afford going all in now...

I'm not even certain I can convince my normie friends to play this, but I just want as many mechs as possible for dat variety.

Mostly for fluff reasons, since you're running a military outfit. The only difference is that officers rate better pay than other ranks, so once that grizzled veteran/elite Tech sergeant is dragged kicking and screaming into the officer's mess, his pay makes a sudden jump.
>>
>>67800446
Officers get a +mod ok, I got that now. But how do I assign someone as officer? Is it a specific rank and higher supposed to be an officer? Which one? I am not familiar with military ranks at all

Also, in case CA is reading this, perhaps it would be best if he mentioned in this part (making sup.personnel sergeants) is mostly fluff? People might get confused like I did.

Btw, thank you all for your assistance in AtB and MekHQ. Awesome software but a little daunting to new guys.
>>
>>67800286
Technically I go out of my way to actually avoid a point in time I ever have that many astechs, but that's because I've had a bloated save file with a few hundred of them.

>>67800574
>But how do I assign someone as officer?
Right click personnel: Change Rank (first in the list), then anything from Lieutenant up. Just note that there's usually only one Colonel (or whatever your highest rank is) in the unit.

>making sup.personnel sergeants) is mostly fluff?
Making Astechs have a rank is absolutely not fluff. Per Field Manual Mercenaries: Revised, your contract pay is based on your unit's payroll, IE: every member of the unit who has a rank. It's probably a little high on that score, but FMMr assigns regular Technicians as basically privates, rather than my own interpretation of having them as at least E10.
>>
>>67800574
>how do I assign someone as officer
Right-click their name in the Personnel tab, select "change rank" and set their new rank. If you're using the preset Star League ranks, Lieutenant JG to the various Generals are officers.

>I am not familiar with military ranks at all
Brief primer, using the Star League ranks as an example: you start as a Private, which is the lowest of the low. After some time of competent service, you're promoted to Corporal, which is the lowest rung on the non-commissioned officer (NCO) ladder. Some of those do even more competent service and get promoted to Sergeants, and on the top of the NCO pile sits the Master Sergeant who is usually THE senior NCO of the unit.

For officers, you come out of officer school and start at Lieutenant JG (junior grade), climbing the ranks as you put in time served and again that competent service. Lt JGs are your typical lance leaders, Lieutenants SG (senior grade) are usually Company second-in-commands OR specialist lance/platoon leaders, whilst a Captain leads a company. Majors can command a battalion or work as a second-in-command if your unit is commanded by a Colonel. The sergeant-turned-officer in my earlier post is something called a Late Entry Officer, and you can spot them around the technical trades (your techs' platoon leader, Lieutenant X, resigns for a life of beach loungers and no myomer? "Let's make an officer and gentleman out of Sergeant Rock and put him in charge!")

I wish there was a way to get in contact with CA but instead I have no other way but to spam the board.

In his guide for AtB regarding xp he writes: " For Technical and Medical the Skills XP ranges have been changed to 0/5/10/10/20/40/50/60/80. This allows for 0 rated Doctors and Technicians meaning there’s less excitement involving lost parts and exacerbated injuries"

I don't really get what he mean by 0 level and how is that a good thing? Previously, the way the costs where set, Sup personnel skipped a level I (think they went from v.green to regular)
>>
What's the Israel of the BattleTech universe?
>>
>>67803670
So by default, doctors and certain other skills could only get to 5+ rating. That is, a medical check needs to roll 5 plus whatever modifiers the injury adds. With a 0 rated doctor, that doctor starts at 0 on 2d6 and adds the modifiers

ah zero rates is like a mechwarrior has 0 in piloting and gunnery, ok got.

But why add a step in leveling in the campaign options?

If I understand correctly, as per AtB leveling non-com is
"Non-combat skills start at 9 and always skip from 9 to 7. The costs for advancing Techs, Admins and Doctors skills are 10, 20 and 40 to go from Green, to Regular,Veteran and Elite."

But in your settings guide, you change the 0 value for 10 (thus not skipping that level). Did I miss something?

>>
>>67805563

Yes, of course. Rifleman isn't even bad, it's just not a frontline heavy mech and that is the roll it keeps getting dropped into. It's a pretty damn good Anti-Air mech that gets stuck having to be a D-Tier heavy mech because the Inner Sphere doesn't do unit articulation 200+ years into the apocalypse.
>>

The Archer is the man's man of fire support boats. It's simple, and even later variants attempt to keep the majority of that simplicity. The Marauder... is less so. It's well known as a command mech, but suffers from thin armor, actually using an AC/5 and bonkers upgrades. It looks great on the table though.

Alternating your PPC fire won't help with your sub 20 point torso armor and a torso that contains only a single crit of AC/5 ammo.
>>
>>67805563

The Warhammer and P-Hawk are worldbeaters, though. Anything a light mech can do, the P-Hawk can do better. It's usually put as the command mech of a light lance (the Wasp and Stinger), or a super-scout lance of P-Hawks.

The Warhammer can shoot two PPCs at a high rate of fire, higher than the Marauder can. It can fight its way out of close range or seal the deal on the armor breaches that it makes as well, which most PPC spammers can't do.

>I was just reminded of this in a recent game, where I swear that I had won with an Awesome in good condition holding the field against a worn down Battlemaster with everything else dead or fleeing. Battletech infantry while military assets, are obsolescent as tactical assets. They are strategic assets. On a "modern" battlefield they occupy the same tactical niche as a minefield.

Since they are affordable and do have *some* tactical utility, they get used tactically. But it isn't a military machine being respectable when it happens.

In certain situations they're useful. Sometimes you don't want or can't have a gaint mech stomping around blowing everything up.

Honestly I got the idea from seeing a 40K Kill Team thread and thought it would be cool to have this type up game. I remember reading about how Clan Wolf had specialized elemental units used to kill enemy commanders behind enemy lines. Thought it would be fun to have a game replicating that kind of thing or other types of espionage or other types of combat situations where Battle Armor would be ideal and protomechs could maybe work as well.

Wolves or Falcons. I hope it's the Falcons. The Bears are gonna get Stoned according to the original notes. Which makes sense. Space Jews are pretending to be Comstar since they conquered Tukayyid in the 3140's but the Fleet of Blake is likely to drop in and ruin their fun.

Wolves are carving out their own territory and have been since the late-3130's in the 3rd most retarded decision of the DA. Falcons and Wolves are both within 1 jump of Terra since 3151.

Then there's all the sneaky clan beyond the periphery shit that's been going on in Stoner space since the Ilsa Bick novels so we always have the Homeworlder wildcard.

The complete mishandling of the Spacejews in the DA, especially the modern CGL DA and the Bears being insufferable since the first Dominion War IRL makes me happy they're not getting squat.

Not that the Wolves aren't horribly twisted into a mutant freak led by a Steiner Davion incest baby and the Falcons rended and mended by a madwoman who won the Khanship in the burning hulk of a destroyed warship, but they're both better choices. I would laugh my ass off if Kisho and his band of Nova Cat misfits wound up on Terra first though just like that moment in Rat Race.

No, just Kickstarter experience and industry familiarity. Whenever it’s someone’s first time making a thing, they don’t realize how many steps are involved and how much money or time it’s going to take. This KS campaign is just a company doing more of something they’ve done recently. Same designers, same suppliers - the process already exists. The costs are understood.

The Robotech guys weren’t familiar with the limitations of plastic injection molding when they promised to make super-detailed minis. That bit them in the ass.

Troublemaker Games tried to get into the Epic 40,000 proxy mini business with plastics and metals. The metals worked out because they had done it before. The plastic sprues were a disaster and it sank the company. They couldn’t find anyone in the UK who could make them for what anyone was willing to pay, so they went to China looking for small-time casters, found one that sat on the project for a couple of years, and the resulting minis were too fragile to use. They sold to Vanguard Minis, who incidentally is a good source for 6mm infantry (albeit 40k-styled).

CGL went through all that crap when they took an extra year to bring out the current plastic boxes.

If you want me to say something negative, I think PVC plastic takes too much effort to clean up and I’d rather buy IWM’s minis based on these designs, whenever they come out.

All of which have been overambitious, slow to deliver, and ill-planned. This one has every possible red flag - previous failures, hilarious overconfidence, lots of last-second stretch goals, delayed updates after goals get passed, and a known embezzler at the helm. Fucking pass. If it doesn't take down CGL, cool, I'll take the 20-30% hit on retail pricing. But no way in HELL am I putting money into a quantum Urbie.

my friends and i are thinking of getting back into battletech. i'm trying to set up a simple game so we can refresh ourselves on the system, but a lot of the scenarios seem to involve way too many minis for this - i'd be looking at no more than a lance or star per side.

any ideas? or is there any premades i could use?
>>
>>67822871
The scenarios in the rule booklet in the new box set are designed to teach the game.
>>
Where has Catalyst gotten its rabid fanboys from? Im curious because they have a goddamn defense force of trolls on the KS page to rush to their defense no matter how legit questions people ask are. They then derail the topic by attacking the person with questions. Are they actually really good at customer support or something Im not aware of, what causes this fanboy level?

Their customer support is alright… slow as hell, but they eventually come through. It’s not enough to explain the fanboyism.

it's more just trying to get balanced teams for this, is what i'm struggling with. i tried balancing stuff with BV, but i'd rather not have too many complicated items for the first few games.
>>

>>
>>67822944
I don't think it's CGL fanboys as much as it is people who don't want to think negatively / really want this to work out because if it does then they get stuff they want and if it doesn't then they're out a lot of money. It's more a general phenomenon you see on any big project.
>>
>>67823428
Dick around with pilot scores on the bugs to bring them more in line. Top has a better shot at winning since they don't run quite as hot and have slightly better range and armor. Otherwise should be a fun match mostly decided by dice and tactics.

That's just asking who people chose, not their favorite. I mean, Comstar is my favorite, but I already have all the old Reaper pins/keychains from the 90's and loaded up on faction dice during the 2017 CGL store christmas sale where they were like $1.50 apiece.

Think I'm gonna go Drac for this one.

But Falcons as the clannest clan in a clan kickstarter getting the most picks makes sense to me.

Arent Jags or Steel Vipers clannier? Well, Falcons have more screen time.
I went for Blood Spirits for my faction shenanigans, but planned to get Hells Horses and Steel Viper dice as well. Poor Spirits sadly are mostly good for being sad about. I plan on building my Stars as Hells Horses.
>>
>>67824575
Well, wolves are to spheroid. Ward and his bros changed it back to late, so the clannier eternal second fiddle antagonist fits the Bill.
>>
>>67824816
They're both extremes on the sliding scale of straight Clanliness; Jags on the stupidly Clanlike end; Vipers on the opportunistically Clanlike* end

But the definitive Clan has always been Thurston's Falcons

>*Although in the end the Vipers devolved into being stupidly Clanlike anyway, to their eventual doom
>>
>>67824844
Even Vlad's Wolves are pretty dezgra by Clan standard, but more importantly they're boring
>>
>>67801710
>FFS there's that much more? Can we have a rough kraut take over the company with WWII german efficiency or something?
You really don't want that, unless you want your games and books coming with shit ton of variant covers with each having different set of rules inside of them. And the game editors that can pay the most bribes get the biggest push no matter what is actually selling.
>>
>>67824961
I assume that is an author? I havent read any BT books beyond rules, being a new player. Could you recommend some of his work to me you think illustrates this definitive clanliness? Would be thankfull.
>>
>>67824816
>Arent Jags or Steel Vipers clannier?
No. They're more lawful stupid. Falcons are THE stereotype. They are every main thing you imagine about the clans and the latitude to lean into any of them in any era. Thoughtless aggression and hard traditionalism? Canny politics and soft honor? They do both instead of one. They hate Freebirths but use them anyway and acknowledge their prowess. They apply their strict caste system on every world. They still go full furry dress uniform when most everyone else has abandoned them. They hoard loads of dueling relics yet build munchtech monsters in response to shifting wars. Even in the DA, they lean into combined arms hard enough to win tank battles with the Hell's Horses.

They are everything clan. Each of the others holds merely pieces of the Falcon.
>>
>>67824961
>>67825056
Ps: To me Jags were all about Clan agressiveness and the Vipers seemed to me to be really fanatic about Clan honour traditions. Are Falcons then the best admixture?
>>
>>67824987
How so? Are they to Standard clan? And I assume them Camping in the IS and some genetic tampering would be disgracefull?

>>
>>67825126
Not him but they're boring because they don't do jack shit after the Refusal War until the Jihad. One of the main problems with the OZ's in general IRL is there's really nothing but shit-tier Kerensky Cluster tier raiding going on and not real wars for most of their existence except at the IS borders. And the Wolves are sandwiched right in the middle with no IS borders. The authors of course realized this almost twenty years ago, but their DA solution to the problem was absolutely retarded.

As other anon said, they didn't do anything to stand out from not-Phelan Wolves from the end of the Refusal War

Their single most noteworthy exploit is depicted on the cover of Wars of Reaving; snatching the Kerensky giftake from Strana Mechty and blowing up the chapel. But besides that, they're like, reduced to pre-WOR Coyote tier

>>67825056
Yeah, Robert Thurston's Jade Phoenix trilogy. It's Clan 101, in all its glory and stupidity, and it cements the Falcons as the definition of Clan.

>>67825088
What other anon said is right. If one measures the Clans by smarts/stupidity and adherence to doctrine, then Jags are stupid lawful while Vipers are smart chaotic

Jags took the Clan way to its ultimate tyrannical conclusion in treatment of both their own people and the conquered OZ. Vipers pretended to follow the letter but only insofar as to further their own ends. For both of them, it came back to bite them in the ass.
>>
>>67825821

>Are they actually really good at customer support
Hahaha, fuck no. Their customer support is atrocious. Back in the day I got the Blake Documents, along with the ISP and previous Jihad SB, in hardcopy.

They "delivered," electronically, TR 3025 R, Sword and Dragon, and the CBT RPG. It took six god damn weeks of badgering their customer service e-mail address, followed by Randall directly, to unfuck the situation.

Or so I thought. Turns out, they then didn't actually send me the books, which I realised about six months later. Cue eight weeks of badgering to get them to send the books, which arrived twelve weeks after that because they use the shittiest fulfillment possible and/or have lazy bastards manning distribution.

My story's not even unique. For a long time there the OF had an active thread of "my order is late/fucked, what do I do?" where the official answer was "dude, the warehouse is staffed by part-time volunteers, we're legit working as hard as possible here, what did you expect, actual professionalism? If you're having issues, e-mail Randall direct because nobody else can help."

>>67825876
>That is a dick move.
It was the first thing of note they'd done in almost 20 IRL years and almost the same IC other than get their ass beat by Falcons, Bears, Horses, or the IS.

Kerensky's body is interred on the McKenna's Pride, and the Wolves took all the genetic information with them. All they did was blow up a building that only they were allowed into any way.
